Speaker 1: milk bones and balls, squeaky rubber ducks and knotted ropes

Speaker 1: to play tug of war with, frisbees, and bits of

Speaker 1: old leather to tuck their teeth into. Whenever Sonny went

Speaker 1: to visit, she and Hector would run over to the box,

Speaker 1: give a little bark to announce that they wanted to
00:01:11
Speaker 1: have some fun, and then a member of Hector's family
00:01:14
Speaker 1: would come over and tip the box over for them.

Speaker 1: There you go, they'd say, you can play to your

Speaker 1: heart's content with whatever you can find in this box,

Speaker 1: chew away. Just make sure you never chew one of

Speaker 1: our shoes. That was Hector's family's only rule. Never ever,

Speaker 1: under no circumstances, chew on one of their shoes. And

Speaker 1: if Hector and Sonny were to be honest, sometimes that

Speaker 1: was a pretty hard rule to follow, because if there's
00:01:47
Speaker 1: anything that all dogs can agree on, it's that shoes
00:01:51
Speaker 1: are absolutely irresistibly tooworthy canvas trainers and leather boots, high

Speaker 1: heels and sandals for a dog. It was as though
00:02:05
Speaker 1: every single tantalizing shoe you saw was just calling out
00:02:10
Speaker 1: to be chewed on. And yet, in spite of the temptation,

Speaker 1: Hector and Sonny respected the rule and they never, no
00:02:21
Speaker 1: matter how much they wanted to, played with one of
00:02:24
Speaker 1: the human shoes, Which was why it was so very
00:02:28
Speaker 1: strange when one day in early spring, the family's shoes

Speaker 1: started going missing. They started with a lowly trainer, Then

Speaker 1: the next day one of Hector's mum's work shoes, a
00:02:44
Speaker 1: fancy one made out of black patent leather, suddenly disappeared.

Speaker 1: Then the day after that it was one of his
00:02:52
Speaker 1: dad's weddy boots. Something was truly afoot. Now, you two

Speaker 1: Hector's dad said to Hector and Sonny one afternoon, when
00:03:03
Speaker 1: a third shoe had gone missing, Is it you who's
00:03:06
Speaker 1: been taking our shoes? Maybe you couldn't resist and you've
00:03:10
Speaker 1: taken them and squirreled them away somewhere. Come on, now,
00:03:15
Speaker 1: fess up. But Hector and Sonny just looked at him
00:03:19
Speaker 1: with their big, honest eyes and shook their heads. They
00:03:23
Speaker 1: hadn't taken them, they absolutely promised, and just by looking
00:03:27
Speaker 1: at them, Hector's dad had to believe them they were innocent.

Speaker 1: He stroked his chin in confusion and wandered away, muttering
00:03:37
Speaker 1: to himself. It's rather odd, Hector mused to Sonny on
00:03:43
Speaker 1: the third afternoon after the welly boot's disappearance, all of
00:03:47
Speaker 1: a sudden, these single shoes are disappearing from the house,
00:03:54
Speaker 1: and worst of all, agreed Sonnie, they've even contemplated what
00:04:00
Speaker 1: possibility that we've been taking them us. She said this
00:04:07
Speaker 1: in a kind of low grumble that showed just how
00:04:11
Speaker 1: disgruntled she was. But at the same time, she was
00:04:15
Speaker 1: looking out of the corner of her eye at a
00:04:17
Speaker 1: pair of brown leather loafers, which were looking particularly tasty
00:04:22
Speaker 1: right about now. But she wouldn't have a chew of them.

Speaker 1: A promise was a promise. The two K nine pals
00:04:31
Speaker 1: agreed that something really ought to be done. It was
00:04:35
Speaker 1: true that they wanted to clear from their names any

Speaker 1: trace of suspicion, but more than anything, they just wanted

Speaker 1: to find out where all of Hector's family's shoes were
00:04:45
Speaker 1: disappearing off to, and so they concocted a very cunning plan.

Speaker 1: The missing shoes had been disappearing from a long shoe
00:04:56
Speaker 1: rack that sat in the kitchen by the back door
00:04:59
Speaker 1: of Hector's house, so that the family could slip them

Speaker 1: on and off when they went into the back garden.

Speaker 1: Whoever was pinching the shoes, they agreed, would have to

Speaker 1: be taking them from there, And so they decided the

Speaker 1: next day to lie in wait in the pantry with

Speaker 1: a door just ajar so that they could spot any
00:05:21
Speaker 1: one who was going anywhere near the rack of shoes.

Speaker 1: And this is just what they did. Late the next morning,

Speaker 1: Hector and Sonny snuck into the pantry, pulled the door
00:05:34
Speaker 1: almost entirely closed, then lay down their heads resting on
00:05:40
