00:00:27

Speaker 1: called Cocoa, and Dea from Leicestershire, UK. Dea, I heard

00:00:32

Speaker 1: that you love our crazy canine friends Hector and Sunny

00:00:35

Speaker 1: the most, so I saved your shout out for tonight's story,

00:00:47

Speaker 1: free listening. So who knows where we're headed tonight. We've

00:00:51

Speaker 1: actually been here before, but last time we were with

00:00:54

Speaker 1: a little girl called Ivy and it was Christmas. Yup,

00:00:58

Speaker 1: it's New York. We're going back to the Big Apple

00:01:01

Speaker 1: with Hector and Sonny. They are headed off on a

00:01:05

Speaker 1: very exciting holiday there with Hector's owner, and their stay

00:01:09

Speaker 1: just gets better and better as they learn that there's

00:01:12

Speaker 1: much more to New York than meets the eye. I

00:01:15

Speaker 1: don't know about you, but my heart is racing now,

00:01:18

Speaker 1: so let's take a few nice calming breaths and yawns

00:01:22

Speaker 1: before we get started, close your eyes or let them

00:01:27

Speaker 1: gently rest, and just breathe in and out softly through

00:01:31

Speaker 1: your nose, in and out in and side out in

00:01:44

Speaker 1: deep and side out in again, and this time try

00:01:53

Speaker 1: to yawn it out in and God, there you go.

00:02:03

Speaker 1: Wriggle around a little bit and shake if you need,

00:02:06

Speaker 1: or stretch until you're ready to rest and snuggle down. Okay,

00:02:11

Speaker 1: let's get started. This is Hector and Sunny in New

00:02:16

Speaker 1: York City by Luke Prendergast. Although it's true that Hector

00:02:28

Speaker 1: and Sunny, two normal seeming but incredibly special dogs, had

00:02:32

Speaker 1: been on many fantastical adventures, they had never been on

00:02:36

Speaker 1: what you might call a conventional holiday. But all that

00:02:41

Speaker 1: was about to change. One afternoon, while they were lounging

00:02:45

Speaker 1: about in the garden, relaxing in the spring sunlight and

00:02:49

Speaker 1: chewing on an old flip flop, Hector's dad came out

00:02:53

Speaker 1: of the house to tell them that he had something

00:02:55

Speaker 1: exciting to tell them. The very next day they would

00:03:00

Speaker 1: all be going on holiday. They'd be catching a plane.

00:03:03

Speaker 1: They were off, he said, to New York, the Big Apple,

00:03:08

Speaker 1: the city that never sleeps, the most exhilarating metropolis in

00:03:14

Speaker 1: the whole wide world. So he concluded, barely able to

00:03:19

Speaker 1: keep his own excitement from fizzing up and out, they'd

00:03:22

Speaker 1: better go and get ready. Hector and Sonny might have

00:03:26

Speaker 1: never been on holiday before, but they certainly knew how

00:03:30

Speaker 1: to get ready for one. They'd seen their owners pack

00:03:33

Speaker 1: their bags each year as they went off on holiday

00:03:36

Speaker 1: to beach vacations, city breaks, skiing trips, and jungle expeditions.

00:03:42

Speaker 1: So they went upstairs, pulled out a couple of suitcases,

00:03:46

Speaker 1: and threw open the wardrobe doors. I wonder what the

00:03:51

Speaker 1: weather will be like, Hector mused, looking through the wardrobe.

00:03:56

Speaker 1: Everything depends on that, really well, Sonny told him it's spring,

00:04:03

Speaker 1: so I bet it will be warm in the day

00:04:06

Speaker 1: but chilly at night, and in might rain, you know,

00:04:10

Speaker 1: So it's best to pack for all eventualities, And so

00:04:15

Speaker 1: that's what they did. They packed sunglasses and anna rags,

00:04:19

Speaker 1: two light scarves, and a couple of sun hats. Hector

00:04:24

Speaker 1: even packed his favorite tartan jacket, which clipped up under

00:04:28

Speaker 1: his belly. They packed a few bags of treats in

00:04:32

Speaker 1: case they got peckish, and a book each too in

00:04:35

Speaker 1: case of a rainy day. They packed their toilet trees,

00:04:39

Speaker 1: doggy toothbrushes, nail clippers, a brush to keep their coats

00:04:43

Speaker 1: nice and sleek. Oh Sonny cried after him as Hector

00:04:47

Speaker 1: bounded out of the room to fetch something. And don't

00:04:50

Speaker 1: forget a couple of chew toys. Will need some good

00:04:54

Speaker 1: stuff to chew on in New York City. Nice stinking,

00:04:59

Speaker 1: Hector told her with a toothy grin, and he ran

00:05:02

Speaker 1: off to get the toys. The next morning, they woke

00:05:06

Speaker 1: up when their alarm went off, grabbed their bags between

00:05:09

Speaker 1: their teeth, and jumped into the car. Hector's dad was

00:05:14

Speaker 1: very impressed. Wow, he said, dogs who can pack their

00:05:18

Speaker 1: own bags. Imagine that. Everyone was very excited. They were

00:05:24

Speaker 1: never up this early. The sun was only just rising

00:05:29

Speaker 1: and the car headlights shone on the dark roads. But

00:05:33

Speaker 1: even though it was early, they were all surprised to

00:05:36

Speaker 1: find at the airport was busy. The huge terminal, with

00:05:41

Speaker 1: its sliding glass doors and cafes and backlit signs, was

00:05:45

Speaker 1: teeming with people, all of them walking this way and that,

00:05:50

Speaker 1: pulling wheeli suitcases behind them, looks of eager anticipation on

00:05:55

Speaker 1: their faces. Everyone's looking forward to going on holiday, said Sonny. Well,

00:06:02

Speaker 1: you can't blame them, Hector replied, so am I. The

00:06:08

Speaker 1: two dogs stood beside Hector's dad as they all looked

00:06:12

Speaker 1: up at the big screen which listed all the flights

00:06:15

Speaker 1: that were taking off that morning. Soon they saw their

00:06:19

Speaker 1: flight to New York City. They followed the signs to

00:06:22

Speaker 1: the checking desk listed and waited in the queue for

00:06:25

Speaker 1: five minutes until they reached the front. The man behind

00:06:30

Speaker 1: the desk was very friendly as he checked Hector's dad's

00:06:33

Speaker 1: passport and Hector and Sonny's canine passports and waved their bags.

00:06:39

Speaker 1: Is it your first time going to New York, he

00:06:42

Speaker 1: asked them. Hector's dad told him it was, oh, he said,

00:06:48

Speaker 1: returning their passports to Hector's dad with a big, bright smile.

00:06:53

Speaker 1: What a wonderful time you're going to have, and with

00:06:57

Speaker 1: your adorable dogs too, And they watched as their suitcase

00:07:01

Speaker 1: wobbled down the conveyor belt and disappeared out of sight.

00:07:07

Speaker 1: Next up, they made their way to security. They waited

00:07:11

Speaker 1: in another queue, and then her friendly security officer told

00:07:15

Speaker 1: them to place any metal objects they might have into

00:07:18

Speaker 1: a little plastic box, even the dog's collars Hector's dad asked, Oh, yes, sir,

00:07:26

Speaker 1: She replied, that'll have to come off. So Hector's dad

00:07:31

Speaker 1: slipped off their collars, put them in the box, and

00:07:34

Speaker 1: then let the dogs trot through the security arches. Then

00:07:37

Speaker 1: he followed on through. Thank you, the security woman said, beaming,

00:07:42

Speaker 1: She handed them back their collars. Have a fantastic trip.

00:07:48

Speaker 1: Soon enough, Hector and Sonny were at their gate. They

00:07:51

Speaker 1: sat by the huge glass windows, looking out at all

00:07:55

Speaker 1: the planes that trundled down the runways and then took

00:07:58

Speaker 1: off gracefully into the sky like big metal birds. Then

00:08:03

Speaker 1: a particularly large plane rolled up to their gate. This

00:08:07

Speaker 1: must be ours, Sonny barked, and she was right. After

00:08:13

Speaker 1: a few minutes, the air stewards called them up and

00:08:16

Speaker 1: checked their boarding passes and passports one more time. One

00:08:21

Speaker 1: human seat and two K nine seats, she said, gotcha,

00:08:27

Speaker 1: and then they were on the plane. They buckled their belts,

00:08:31

Speaker 1: watched the security information carefully, and Hector's dad slipped on

00:08:36

Speaker 1: his headphones to watch an in flight movie. But Hector

00:08:41

Speaker 1: and Sonny were having too much fun to watch any

00:08:44

Speaker 1: kind of movie at all. They watched through the window

00:08:47

Speaker 1: as the plane rose ah up, broke through the misty

00:08:52

Speaker 1: bank of clouds and out into the crystal blue sky. Wow.

00:08:59

Speaker 1: They both whisper, but the clouds spread out like white,

00:09:03

Speaker 1: fluffy mountains beneath them, and for the rest of the journey,

00:09:08

Speaker 1: Hector and Sunny settled back into their seats and watched

00:09:13

Speaker 1: them roll by. New York City was more spectacular than

00:09:20

Speaker 1: either Hector or Sunny could ever have imagined. The skyscrapers

00:09:25

Speaker 1: towered up so high in the sky they got dizzy

00:09:29

Speaker 1: from looking upwards. Yellow taxis flowed in long lines down

00:09:35

Speaker 1: the roads. People on the streets smiled and waved and

00:09:39

Speaker 1: hurried about, and steam rose in clouds from big metal

00:09:44

Speaker 1: grates in the pavement, or they should say, in the sidewalk.

00:09:49

Speaker 1: That's what New Yorkers called it. Hector's dad took them

00:09:53

Speaker 1: to Central Park, they walked up Broadway, they visited the

00:09:58

Speaker 1: Empire State Building, and at the end of their first day,

00:10:03

Speaker 1: feeling tired and satisfied, they went back home and Hector's

00:10:07

Speaker 1: dad to canap. You know what I'm in the mood for,

00:10:12

Speaker 1: Sonny asked Hector, what relaxing and having a good chew

00:10:19

Speaker 1: on a chew toy. That's a great idea, Hector agreed,

00:10:26

Speaker 1: but that's when they made a very unfortunate discovery. They

00:10:31

Speaker 1: had forgotten to pack the chew toys. They searched all

00:10:35

Speaker 1: through both their bags, but they couldn't find them. Hector

00:10:39

Speaker 1: felt very guilty. It had been his job to pack

00:10:43

Speaker 1: the chew toys, after all, but Sonny, with her big

00:10:47

Speaker 1: kind heart, told him that he shouldn't feel bad, not

00:10:51

Speaker 1: even for one moment. This no worries, she told him. Besides,

00:10:57

Speaker 1: we're in New York City. I bet there's plenty of

00:11:01

Speaker 1: things out there did chew on. And so Hector and

00:11:05

Speaker 1: Sonny headed back out into the city to search for

00:11:09

Speaker 1: something to chew. They looked up the streets, They peered

00:11:14

Speaker 1: into shops, They looked under cars, They searched in front yards,

00:11:20

Speaker 1: but they couldn't find anything. Then, just as they were

00:11:24

Speaker 1: about to give up, Hector spotted something. Look, Sonny, look,

00:11:30

Speaker 1: he said, and he pointed at a chew toy, a

00:11:34

Speaker 1: bright purple rubber bone, lying next to a metal grate

00:11:37

Speaker 1: on the street. Hah, that's perfect, said Sonny. The two

00:11:43

Speaker 1: of them bounded over, and Sonny was just about to

00:11:47

Speaker 1: lower her head to grasp the toy between her teeth

00:11:51

Speaker 1: and give it a good old chew, when, much to

00:11:54

Speaker 1: their surprise, the Purple Bone stood up, shook itself oh,

00:12:00

Speaker 1: opened its wide googly eyes, and said, oh hello, they're

00:12:04

Speaker 1: you two? How you doing? Our two canine pals were

00:12:10

Speaker 1: so surprised to find a talking purple bone that they

00:12:14

Speaker 1: themselves were momentarily stuck for words. The Purple Bone blinked

00:12:19

Speaker 1: at them a few times, then a realization lit up

00:12:23

Speaker 1: in his eyes. Were you too? Were you two? Actually?

00:12:30

Speaker 1: Were yo two gonna chill me? It took a second

00:12:34

Speaker 1: for Sonny to find her tongue. Hum, no, she said.

00:12:40

Speaker 1: The Purple Bone blinked again. Choo wa, he said, I

00:12:46

Speaker 1: saw you cho were leaning down to chew on me.

00:12:53

Speaker 1: But but Hector stammered, isn't that what you're for? The

00:12:59

Speaker 1: Purple Bone blinked at them yet again, looking as though

00:13:03

Speaker 1: he were very offended. Then abruptly he burst out laughing,

00:13:10

Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I almost really had the two of you there,

00:13:13

Speaker 1: didn't I? The Purple Bone said. Now. Hector and Sonny

00:13:18

Speaker 1: were laughing too, partly out of relief that they hadn't

00:13:21

Speaker 1: actually caused any offense, but mostly because it was a

00:13:25

Speaker 1: pretty good practical joke for the Purple Bone to play.

00:13:28

Speaker 1: You really did almost have us, they said. Hector and

00:13:33

Speaker 1: Sonny introduced themselves, and the bone said, what's up. My

00:13:38

Speaker 1: name's Milky. Because I got so much calcium in me,

00:13:43

Speaker 1: I'll make your little nashes shine. Welcome to New York City.

00:13:49

Speaker 1: So you guys are looking for something to chew? Huh? Yes,

00:13:55

Speaker 1: Hector and Sonny said, and they told him about their

00:13:58

Speaker 1: predicament about leaving all their chew toys at home. Well,

00:14:04

Speaker 1: said Milkie, let me let you in on a little secret.

00:14:10

Speaker 1: Have the two of you ever heard of a magical

00:14:14

Speaker 1: little place called chew York City? Chew York City. Hector

00:14:20

Speaker 1: and Sonny looked at each other and at Milkie in

00:14:23

Speaker 1: confusion and wonder. No we haven't, said Hector. What's that, ah,

00:14:32

Speaker 1: said Milki. Well, it's the most stupendously wondrous place you

00:14:38

Speaker 1: could ever in a million years imagine. But I don't

00:14:44

Speaker 1: want to tell you about it. I want to show you.

00:14:48

Speaker 1: Follow me, And with that, Milky tottered off towards the grate,

00:14:54

Speaker 1: which he lifted up, revealing a deep, dark tunnel. Follow me,

00:14:59

Speaker 1: he said again, and he dove right in. It didn't

00:15:04

Speaker 1: take Hector and Sunny more than a quick eager glance

00:15:07

Speaker 1: to know that, of course they were going to follow him.

00:15:10

Speaker 1: They had a thirst adventure, and they wanted more than

00:15:13

Speaker 1: anything to find out about this whole new place, New

00:15:17

Speaker 1: York City. So in they dove, one after the other

00:15:22

Speaker 1: and tumbled down and down and down until they landed

00:15:28

Speaker 1: back on the street, with Milky the Purple Bone standing

00:15:32

Speaker 1: right beside them, dusting himself off. They were exactly where

00:15:37

Speaker 1: they'd started, except they weren't. As they looked around, they

00:15:43

Speaker 1: began to notice differences. They seemed to be on the

00:15:46

Speaker 1: same street of New York, with the higher ese buildings

00:15:50

Speaker 1: and the leafy trees and the car parked by the

00:15:53

Speaker 1: side of the road, but everything seemed sort of different. Wow,

00:16:02

Speaker 1: whispered Hector, finally understanding what had happened. Look, Sonny, look,

00:16:10

Speaker 1: everything is made out of chew toys. Sonny looked around.

00:16:17

Speaker 1: Hector was right, everything and she meant everything was chewable.

00:16:24

Speaker 1: The cars were made of rubber, The wheels were giant frisbees.

00:16:29

Speaker 1: The trees weren't trees at all, for delicious looking sticks

00:16:34

Speaker 1: with stuffed toyleees hanging from the twiggy branches. The walls

00:16:39

Speaker 1: weren't built out of bricks. They were built out of

00:16:42

Speaker 1: chewy cuboids and lengths of rope for tug of war.

00:16:47

Speaker 1: Even the buildings were chewable, all bits of chewy rubbery

00:16:52

Speaker 1: goodness fitted together into huge, towering puzzles of chewability. Wow,

00:17:01

Speaker 1: just looking at it all made Sonny feel a bit dizzy.

00:17:06

Speaker 1: Now that's the kind of reaction I was hoping for.

00:17:10

Speaker 1: Milkie said, welcome to choe Yolk City. What do you

00:17:16

Speaker 1: guys think? It's like a dreamland? Sighed Hector. It shore is.

00:17:25

Speaker 1: Milky agreed. It's just the kind of place you never

00:17:29

Speaker 1: thought would exist, but it does here, it is, and

00:17:36

Speaker 1: all the dogs of New York City know about it.

00:17:40

Speaker 1: They just come out of their houses, open up a portal, great,

00:17:44

Speaker 1: and jump right on down, and they find themselves here

00:17:50

Speaker 1: in chew York City. So Milki the Purple Bone looked

00:17:55

Speaker 1: at Hector and Sonny with a big grin. What are

00:17:58

Speaker 1: you guys waiting for? Go chew to your heart's content?

00:18:05

Speaker 1: Hector and Sonny didn't need telling twice. They were off

00:18:09

Speaker 1: bounding through New York City. Everything they passed they had

00:18:14

Speaker 1: anaure of, or gave a lick, or tucked their teeth

00:18:18

Speaker 1: in for a good old chew lamp posts and water pumps,

00:18:22

Speaker 1: restaurant tables and fence posts. They hopped into a bakery

00:18:27

Speaker 1: and chewed on a baguette, which wasn't a baguette at all,

00:18:31

Speaker 1: but a stuff toy. The streets were lined with endlessly

00:18:36

Speaker 1: delicious shoes, which they weren't usually in the normal world

00:18:41

Speaker 1: allowed to chew on. They met lots of friendly dogs

00:18:45

Speaker 1: on their way, who greeted them with merry barks or

00:18:49

Speaker 1: showed them great new things to chew on. A big

00:18:53

Speaker 1: great dane showed them how to jump up on walls

00:18:56

Speaker 1: to collect the little treats that were littered on top

00:18:59

Speaker 1: of them, And in Central Park, a tiny chiuhaha showed

00:19:04

Speaker 1: them that if you shook certain trees hard enough, bouncy

00:19:08

Speaker 1: toys full of peanut, butter and berries would be dislodged

00:19:13

Speaker 1: from the branches and rained down like fruit. As they

00:19:18

Speaker 1: sorted down a street, they bumped into Milkie the Purple

00:19:22

Speaker 1: Bone again, who asked them how they were doing. Hey,

00:19:27

Speaker 1: you guys, he added, have you been to the Statue

00:19:31

Speaker 1: of Nibblody yet? Hector and Sonny shook their heads the

00:19:37

Speaker 1: Statue of Niblity, They asked, what's that, oh man, I

00:19:44

Speaker 1: can't believe you guys haven't seen it yet, sighed Milkie.

00:19:49

Speaker 1: The statue of Nibblity is to chew Yok City, what

00:19:52

Speaker 1: the statue of Libberty is to New York City. It's

00:19:57

Speaker 1: the most important landmark in the whole place. And you

00:20:02

Speaker 1: won't be able to guess what our lady of Nibloody

00:20:05

Speaker 1: is holding up in her hand, say Milkie, added, can

00:20:11

Speaker 1: you to swim? Hector and Sonny both nodded. They loved

00:20:16

Speaker 1: to swim, good, said Milkie. Follow me, and in a

00:20:22

Speaker 1: few minutes all three of them were swimming through the

00:20:25

Speaker 1: cool fresh water of the New York Harbor, Doggie paddling

00:20:30

Speaker 1: over to the statue of Niblty. She stood on an

00:20:34

Speaker 1: island in the middle of the water. They reached the

00:20:38

Speaker 1: bank and clambered out. Then they began to scale the statue.

00:20:43

Speaker 1: Up and up they went, climbing up her chewy robes,

00:20:48

Speaker 1: over her head, up her arm, until they reached the

00:20:53

Speaker 1: top and discovered she was holding the most perfect golden

00:20:59

Speaker 1: bone they could ever have imagined. It twinkled in the sunlight.

00:21:05

Speaker 1: It looked irresistibly appetizing. Go one Milky urged them have

00:21:12

Speaker 1: a taste, and let me tell you, they certainly did.

00:21:18

Speaker 1: It was the most mouthwashingly delicious tube bone they'd ever tasted. There,

00:21:25

Speaker 1: the three of them sat, Hector and Sunny and their

00:21:29

Speaker 1: new friend, Milky the Purple Bone. They watched the cityscape

00:21:34

Speaker 1: of New York City darkened into a silhouette as the

00:21:37

Speaker 1: sun dipped behind it. They watched the waves in the

00:21:42

Speaker 1: harbor lap against the shore, and they watched seagulls, who

00:21:47

Speaker 1: were actually flying stuffed toys, dip down and take little

00:21:52

Speaker 1: gulps of water. Soon, Hector found himself yawning, and when

00:21:58

Speaker 1: he let one out, Sonny started yawning too. Then even

00:22:03

Speaker 1: Milky was yawning. That's how infectious yawns can be. Oh,

00:22:11

Speaker 1: said Hector. That was a very fun, but very tiring day.

00:22:19

Speaker 1: We've been all over to York City, chewing on every

00:22:24

Speaker 1: little thing we can find. But now I'm tired. I

00:22:31

Speaker 1: need my bed. Sonny couldn't agree more, and so Milky

00:22:38

Speaker 1: the Purple Bone led them back to the grate that

00:22:41

Speaker 1: they had arrived through and lifted it up. It show

00:22:46

Speaker 1: was fun meeting you guys, he said. You well, come

00:22:51

Speaker 1: back to New York City, won't you? Hector and Sonny nodded.

00:22:56

Speaker 1: Of course, we will, they said, and then together they

00:23:01

Speaker 1: jumped back through the grate and landed back in New

00:23:05

Speaker 1: York City, where the world was normal once again. They

00:23:10

Speaker 1: walked slowly through the fading evening, seeing families eating their dinner,

00:23:16

Speaker 1: kids playing, people sitting on the stoops outside their houses

00:23:21

Speaker 1: listening to music. Eventually they reached where they were staying. Luckily,

00:23:28

Speaker 1: they discovered that Hector's dad was still asleep. He must

00:23:33

Speaker 1: have been exhausted. He hadn't even noticed they'd been gone

00:23:37

Speaker 1: at all. Yawning, Hector and Sonny just about managed to

00:23:43

Speaker 1: take off their sun hats and sunglasses and climb into

00:23:47

Speaker 1: their baskets, where warm and cozy blankets were waiting for them.

00:23:54

Speaker 1: Sonny gave a big stretch and a yawn. Hector laid

00:23:59

Speaker 1: his head on his paws. His eyes were feeling sleepy

00:24:04

Speaker 1: and sticky. What a day it had been. This morning.

00:24:09

Speaker 1: They'd woken up in Leeds at the crack of dawn,

00:24:13

Speaker 1: gone through the airport, flown on a plane, and now

00:24:18

Speaker 1: not only had they arrived in New York City, but

00:24:22

Speaker 1: they'd found a whole canine paradise beneath it. How fun

00:24:28

Speaker 1: it had been. Hector was drifting off to sleep, his

00:24:33

Speaker 1: memories of the day beginning to slip seamlessly into the

00:24:37

Speaker 1: content of his dreams, when he heard Sonny's voice. Hey, Hector,

00:24:44

Speaker 1: she whispered, Yes, he said, Can I just say that? Actually,

00:24:52

Speaker 1: I'm quite glad that you forgot our bag of two toys,

00:24:56

Speaker 1: she said. In his half sleep, Hector frowned, Why that,

00:25:04

Speaker 1: he asked, Well, she said, if you'd remembered them, we

00:25:11

Speaker 1: never would have found Milky, And if we'd never found Milky,

00:25:16

Speaker 1: we never would have found Chew York City either, and

00:25:22

Speaker 1: that would have been a real shame. Oh, said Hector.

00:25:29

Speaker 1: I never thought of it like that. You're completely right,

00:25:36

Speaker 1: And now, feeling very glad, even proud, that he'd forgotten

00:25:42

Speaker 1: the bag of chew toys, Hector fell asleep, and soon

00:25:48

Speaker 1: after that Sonny fell asleep too, and all night long,

00:25:54

Speaker 1: through their peaceful sleeps, they dreamed of ch York City

00:26:00

Speaker 1: and all the fun they had shared their together.
