00:00:10

Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Kuala Moon, a podcast of

00:00:14

Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime

00:00:20

Speaker 1: a tree. Ooh, tonight, it's a big night for Coco

00:00:25

Speaker 1: as he's heading back to school tomorrow. And I'm sure

00:00:29

Speaker 1: many of you know that feeling, but I wonder if

00:00:33

Speaker 1: you also know the superpower that feeling nervous can bring

00:00:37

Speaker 1: to you. So tuck yourself up in bed, snuggle down

00:00:41

Speaker 1: under the covers and relax your shoulders. Maybe gently shake

00:00:46

Speaker 1: your head and close your eyes to relax your eyes

00:00:52

Speaker 1: and forehead. That's right now, we're ready to begin. Coco

00:00:58

Speaker 1: goes to sleep Before itst Elementary by Luke Prendergast. Deep

00:01:10

Speaker 1: in the heart of a faraway forest stood a cozy,

00:01:14

Speaker 1: wooden cabin. Inside the cabin lived a family of koalas.

00:01:19

Speaker 1: The youngest member of the family was called Cocoa. One

00:01:23

Speaker 1: evening at the beginning of September, Coco was being tucked

00:01:27

Speaker 1: into bed by his mother. His pillow was soft under

00:01:30

Speaker 1: his ears, the gentle rustling of leaves came from the

00:01:34

Speaker 1: trees around the cabin, and he had enjoyed a warm

00:01:37

Speaker 1: cup of cocoa. But for some reason, that night Coco

00:01:42

Speaker 1: was extra fidgety. He simply couldn't settle down. What's the

00:01:49

Speaker 1: matter with you, his mother asked him kindly. It's like

00:01:53

Speaker 1: you've got ants in your pants. Coco let out a giggle.

00:01:58

Speaker 1: His mother was always saying funny things like having ants

00:02:01

Speaker 1: in your pants or bees in your bonnets, which didn't

00:02:05

Speaker 1: make any sense when you really thought about them. I

00:02:09

Speaker 1: don't think I can sleep, he told her. I'm too

00:02:14

Speaker 1: busy thinking about tomorrow. Hoko's mother smiled with sympathy. Tomorrow

00:02:21

Speaker 1: was Coco's first day back at Sleepy Forest Elementary School,

00:02:26

Speaker 1: after he had spent a long summer off hanging out

00:02:28

Speaker 1: with his friends and relaxing. Are you excited, she asked him. Oh, yes,

00:02:36

Speaker 1: Hoko said, nodding his head up and down. I'm very excited.

00:02:41

Speaker 1: But then he paused, and a little frown appeared on

00:02:44

Speaker 1: his furry face. His mother, who had known Coco all

00:02:49

Speaker 1: his life and often had a sixth sense about how

00:02:52

Speaker 1: he was feeling, reached out a paw and touched his face.

00:02:57

Speaker 1: But you're a bit nervous. Who are you, she asked him.

00:03:03

Speaker 1: Coco nodded more slowly this time, but he didn't say anything.

00:03:09

Speaker 1: Sometimes he found it hard to admit he was nervous.

00:03:13

Speaker 1: And what are you worried about? His mother asked him softly. Well,

00:03:21

Speaker 1: he replied, I'm going into a new year and lots

00:03:25

Speaker 1: of things will be different. I hope that my teacher

00:03:28

Speaker 1: is nice and I learn lots of things, and I

00:03:31

Speaker 1: also hope I have fun. When he'd finished speaking, Coco

00:03:37

Speaker 1: immediately felt calmer. When he was worried about something, he

00:03:42

Speaker 1: often found that it made things much better to say

00:03:45

Speaker 1: those things out loud. Sharing his worries with someone else

00:03:50

Speaker 1: always seemed to lighten them and make them appear less

00:03:54

Speaker 1: significant than they had before. Now he stopped fidgeting so much,

00:04:00

Speaker 1: lay his head down on the soft pillow. His mother said,

00:04:05

Speaker 1: those are all very normal worries to have. In fact,

00:04:11

Speaker 1: I bet that every little animal in the sleepy forest

00:04:14

Speaker 1: is excited and nervous going to bed tonight. Nerves aren't

00:04:19

Speaker 1: entirely a bad thing, she told him. Sometimes having a

00:04:25

Speaker 1: few nerves can be good. How so, asked Coco. Well,

00:04:33

Speaker 1: his mother said, nerves can be put to good use.

00:04:38

Speaker 1: If you don't have a few of them, you'd never

00:04:41

Speaker 1: have the opportunity to be brave. Coco was always impressed

00:04:46

Speaker 1: by just how wise his mother was. She was absolutely

00:04:51

Speaker 1: right at her words. The last of Coco's remaining nerves

00:04:56

Speaker 1: had disappeared, and he told her that now he was

00:05:00

Speaker 1: only looking forward to tomorrow. Very good, she said, pulling

00:05:06

Speaker 1: the covers over him and giving him a kiss on

00:05:08

Speaker 1: the head. Now, the sooner you sleep, the sooner morning

00:05:14

Speaker 1: will come. She really was very wise. Cocho slept very

00:05:21

Speaker 1: peacefully that night, indeed, and dreamed of all the adventures

00:05:26

Speaker 1: he might get up to in the new school year.

00:05:29

Speaker 1: He woke up feeling fresh and rejuvenated. He hopped right

00:05:34

Speaker 1: out of bed and did a big morning stretch. Ah

00:05:40

Speaker 1: for the first time in weeks. He put on his

00:05:42

Speaker 1: school uniform, a white shirt, a pair of gray shorts,

00:05:47

Speaker 1: a bright green tie with the Sleepy Forest elementary logo

00:05:51

Speaker 1: on it, some socks, and his black leather shoes. He

00:05:56

Speaker 1: looked in the mirror. He was ready to go. His

00:06:01

Speaker 1: mother had already made him some porridge, and before he

00:06:04

Speaker 1: left the tree house, she handed him his school bag.

00:06:08

Speaker 1: I've put your pet lunch in there for you, she

00:06:11

Speaker 1: told him. Now go and have a wonderful first day

00:06:16

Speaker 1: back at school. Koko thanked his mother, gave her a

00:06:20

Speaker 1: big hug and set off through the forest for school.

00:06:25

Speaker 1: Outside the school gates, which swung open on two especially

00:06:29

Speaker 1: strong tree trunks, all of the other students were gathering.

00:06:34

Speaker 1: There were lots of faces there. He didn't recognize students

00:06:39

Speaker 1: from the old years and others newly arriving at Sleepy

00:06:43

Speaker 1: Forest Elementary. But then he saw two of his best friends,

00:06:48

Speaker 1: Camo the comeleon and Prickles the hedgehog, standing the other

00:06:52

Speaker 1: side of the gates. He went over to them and

00:06:55

Speaker 1: said hello. They both looked really pleased to see him. Hello,

00:07:00

Speaker 1: Coo Ko, they said. Ko Ko asked them both how

00:07:04

Speaker 1: they were doing this morning. How excited, said Prickles, I

00:07:08

Speaker 1: can't wait to learn new things and make new friends,

00:07:12

Speaker 1: And he gave a bristle of his needles to show

00:07:15

Speaker 1: just how excited he was. Kamo was a little more quiet.

00:07:20

Speaker 1: He had the extraordinary ability to change the color of

00:07:24

Speaker 1: his skin, sometimes to camouflage himself with his surroundings, or

00:07:29

Speaker 1: other times to put on a wonderful show. Today he

00:07:34

Speaker 1: was the color of leaves and tree bark. I'm feeling

00:07:39

Speaker 1: a bit shy, he whispered to Ko Ko. Ko. Ko

00:07:44

Speaker 1: put his arm around his friend and told him the

00:07:47

Speaker 1: advice his mother had given him the night before. It's

00:07:51

Speaker 1: good to have a few nerves. That's how you get

00:07:54

Speaker 1: to be brave. Ko Ko's advice made Kamo feel much

00:08:00

Speaker 1: much better. Indeed, his skin ripples and turns lots of

00:08:05

Speaker 1: bright colors like a rainbow. Thanks, Cocoa, he said. Just then,

00:08:13

Speaker 1: there was a noise from above. Twit to oo, and

00:08:18

Speaker 1: a big tawny owl with dark feathers and a thick

00:08:23

Speaker 1: pair of spectacles flew down in front of them. All

00:08:27

Speaker 1: the students fell silent. Hello everybody, and welcome to Sleepy Forest. Elementary,

00:08:39

Speaker 1: said the owl. My name is Missus Merry Feathers, and

00:08:46

Speaker 1: I'm your teacher this year. Cocoa, Camo, and Prickles looked

00:08:52

Speaker 1: at each other with relief. Missus Merry Feathers seemed like

00:08:56

Speaker 1: a very kind and very clever teacher all ready. Now,

00:09:03

Speaker 1: if you'd like to follow me, Missus Merryfeathers went on,

00:09:08

Speaker 1: let's start the first day of school. And with those words,

00:09:15

Speaker 1: she spread her broad wings and fluttered through the doors

00:09:20

Speaker 1: of the school. The students all followed after her. They

00:09:26

Speaker 1: found themselves in a room with benches running against the walls,

00:09:31

Speaker 1: with a row of pegs above them. This said, the

00:09:36

Speaker 1: owl is where we can leave our belongings. It's much

00:09:42

Speaker 1: warmer in the school than it is out in the forest.

00:09:45

Speaker 1: So everyone, hang up your coats on the pegs, leave

00:09:50

Speaker 1: your bags on the benches, and tuck your shoes neatly underneath.

00:09:57

Speaker 1: You'll find your name tag under your peg. The students

00:10:04

Speaker 1: all began to walk around the room searching for their pegs.

00:10:09

Speaker 1: Coco soon found his. It was in the corner, not

00:10:13

Speaker 1: very far from Camo's peg. He hung up his coat,

00:10:18

Speaker 1: slipped off his shoes and laid them next to each

00:10:21

Speaker 1: other beneath the bench, and left his bag on top

00:10:25

Speaker 1: of it. When they were all ready, the students followed

00:10:30

Speaker 1: Missus Merry Feathers into the classroom. Wow, whispered Camo. The

00:10:38

Speaker 1: classroom was amazing. The teacher's desk was at the front,

00:10:43

Speaker 1: with a tree branch that had been trained across it,

00:10:47

Speaker 1: perfect for Missus Merry Feathers to perch on, and all

00:10:51

Speaker 1: the other tables were arranged in the middle. Across the

00:10:55

Speaker 1: walls were all kinds of colorful displays and alpha cut

00:11:00

Speaker 1: out in stencils snaked overhead all of the times tables,

00:11:06

Speaker 1: and a perfect map of the sleepy forest. That's where

00:11:11

Speaker 1: I live, cried Coco, pointing to a spot on the map. Cocoa,

00:11:17

Speaker 1: Camo and Prickles all sat down at a table together.

00:11:22

Speaker 1: In the middle of the table were some large sheets

00:11:25

Speaker 1: of paper and a few packs of crayons with many

00:11:29

Speaker 1: different colors. Missus Meryfeathers had flown to her perch and

00:11:35

Speaker 1: now gave a loud hoot to quiet and everyone down.

00:11:40

Speaker 1: Now class, She said, the first lesson of the year

00:11:46

Speaker 1: will be art. You will all find some drawing materials

00:11:50

Speaker 1: in the middle of your desks. Your task for the

00:11:54

Speaker 1: morning is to draw a picture of your homes. She

00:11:59

Speaker 1: gave a click of her beak. Off you go. Cocoa, Camo,

00:12:05

Speaker 1: and Prickles all agreed that this was a very fun

00:12:09

Speaker 1: way to start the school year and got to work

00:12:12

Speaker 1: with great enthusiasm. Coco drew a picture of the cabin

00:12:17

Speaker 1: he shared with his family, nestled amongst the trees. He

00:12:22

Speaker 1: chose three different colors of green to show the variety

00:12:26

Speaker 1: and beauty of all their leaves. Prickles drew a picture

00:12:31

Speaker 1: of the burrow house he shared with his father and

00:12:33

Speaker 1: his baby siblings. It was underground and ever so cozy,

00:12:39

Speaker 1: perfect for hibernating in over the winter. On the walls,

00:12:43

Speaker 1: he made sure to add the brushes that his family

00:12:47

Speaker 1: used to clean their spines and make them shine. Camo

00:12:52

Speaker 1: drew a picture of his family's home, which was down

00:12:55

Speaker 1: by Sleepy River. He made the river water sparkle, and

00:13:00

Speaker 1: drew a wardrobe full of all his favorite fancy dress clothes.

00:13:05

Speaker 1: He worked very hard, using many crayons to make his

00:13:09

Speaker 1: bedroom walls shimmer as though they were covered in velvet.

00:13:15

Speaker 1: That's amazing, said Prickles, looking over at Camo's drawing. Yes, Camo,

00:13:24

Speaker 1: Koko agreed, you're a truly talented artist. Camo blushed a little.

00:13:32

Speaker 1: Oh thanks, guys, he said. It must be your natural

00:13:38

Speaker 1: flare for color, Coco said, making Camo turn completely red.

00:13:45

Speaker 1: When everyone in the class had finished their drawings, they

00:13:49

Speaker 1: took turns standing at the front, showing each other their

00:13:53

Speaker 1: hard work. Coco had never imagined that all the people

00:13:58

Speaker 1: in Sleepy Forest lived in such wondrous places. The beavers

00:14:03

Speaker 1: in the dam they built themselves, the dolphins in their

00:14:07

Speaker 1: underwater palaces, the flamingoes in their beach huts. Soon enough,

00:14:15

Speaker 1: missus Merry Feathers rang a bell it was time for lunch.

00:14:20

Speaker 1: They all formed an orderly line and filed neatly out

00:14:24

Speaker 1: of the classroom. But in the cloakroom they discovered that

00:14:28

Speaker 1: during the excitement of the art lesson, they hadn't noticed

00:14:32

Speaker 1: a huge blast of wind had blown through the door,

00:14:36

Speaker 1: pulling all the coats off their hooks and leaving them

00:14:39

Speaker 1: in a jumbled heap on the floor. Prickles was worried,

00:14:44

Speaker 1: how will we ever find out whose coat is who's.

00:14:49

Speaker 1: Don't worry missus, Merry Feathers responded calmly, this is why

00:14:56

Speaker 1: all of your parents has sowed your name tags into

00:15:00

Speaker 1: your coats, so that way you won't lose them. So

00:15:07

Speaker 1: all the students began to rifle through the big pile

00:15:10

Speaker 1: of coats, checking the name tags in the collars and

00:15:14

Speaker 1: handing them to their rightful owners. It turned out that

00:15:19

Speaker 1: it was a good thing that the wind had blown

00:15:22

Speaker 1: through in the end, because it gave Cocoa, Camo, and

00:15:26

Speaker 1: Prickles the chance to meet many of their new classmates

00:15:30

Speaker 1: and give them back their coats. Out in the playground,

00:15:35

Speaker 1: they all sat down in a circle. Coco searched through

00:15:40

Speaker 1: his bag and pulled out the packed lunch his mother

00:15:43

Speaker 1: had made him cheese sandwiches with extra eucalyptus leaves delicious.

00:15:52

Speaker 1: In his lunch box, Camo had a couple of oranges

00:15:55

Speaker 1: cut up into slices. Prickles had three pots of yogurt,

00:16:00

Speaker 1: one chocolate flavor, one raspberry flavor, and the last one

00:16:04

Speaker 1: cookies and cream. His dad had slipped a slice of

00:16:08

Speaker 1: brownie into his box too. Prickles's dad was one of

00:16:13

Speaker 1: the best bakers in all of Sleepy Forest. The three

00:16:19

Speaker 1: friends shared all their lunches. Coco cut his sandwich into

00:16:24

Speaker 1: slices and passed them around. Camo handed out segments of orange,

00:16:30

Speaker 1: and Prickles gave Cocoa and Camo a yogurt each and

00:16:33

Speaker 1: a bite of brownie too. They agreed that they would

00:16:37

Speaker 1: always share their lunches because it meant that they could

00:16:41

Speaker 1: each enjoy a bit of everything after they'd eaten. The

00:16:47

Speaker 1: whole class played in the playground. Champ the Chimpanzee taught

00:16:52

Speaker 1: everyone how to hop from monkey bar to monkey bar

00:16:56

Speaker 1: as though they were flying through the air, which every

00:17:00

Speaker 1: thought was a whole lot of fun. When missus Merry

00:17:04

Speaker 1: Feathers rang her bell again, they all filed back into

00:17:08

Speaker 1: the classroom and took their seats. Next to the teacher's

00:17:13

Speaker 1: perch was a big wooden box covered with a blue

00:17:17

Speaker 1: sheet of fabric. It was all rather mysterious. This afternoon,

00:17:25

Speaker 1: the wise owl announced, we will be learning to play

00:17:30

Speaker 1: musical instruments. And with these words, she pulled the blue

00:17:37

Speaker 1: sheet off the box with a flourish to reveal a

00:17:40

Speaker 1: chest full of musical instruments. All of the students cheered.

00:17:48

Speaker 1: They were very excited to learn to play musical instruments.

00:17:53

Speaker 1: Each student took it in turn to go up to

00:17:56

Speaker 1: the big wooden chest and take from it an inch

00:18:00

Speaker 1: instrument of their choice. Prickles took a xylophone with two

00:18:05

Speaker 1: wooden sticks. Camo took out a clarinet. Finally, it was

00:18:11

Speaker 1: Coco's turn. He went up to the chest, looked through it,

00:18:16

Speaker 1: and finally saw the musical instrument he wanted, a groovy

00:18:21

Speaker 1: looking blue guitar with bright yellow stars and lightning bolts

00:18:27

Speaker 1: decorated all over it. This one's for me, he cried,

00:18:32

Speaker 1: and carried the guitar back to his friends. For the

00:18:37

Speaker 1: rest of the afternoon, they practiced their musical instruments. At first,

00:18:43

Speaker 1: none of them were very good. Prickles couldn't hit his

00:18:47

Speaker 1: xylophone to the right beat. Camo blew into his clarinet

00:18:52

Speaker 1: and it came out as a loud squeak, and Coco

00:18:56

Speaker 1: kept seeming to pluck the wrong string of his guitar.

00:19:01

Speaker 1: But as time went by and they continued to practice,

00:19:06

Speaker 1: they found they were getting better and better. Prickles discovered

00:19:11

Speaker 1: he actually had a natural sense of rhythm. Camo's clarinet

00:19:16

Speaker 1: playing sounded like the most beautiful bird song, and Coo

00:19:21

Speaker 1: Ko learned cord after chord on his snazzy blue guitar.

00:19:26

Speaker 1: It wasn't so different from the ukulele in the end.

00:19:31

Speaker 1: At the end of the class, the teacher asked them

00:19:34

Speaker 1: to perform a song together. At first, Cooko felt a

00:19:39

Speaker 1: bit nervous to put on a show in front of

00:19:42

Speaker 1: the whole class, but Camo the comedian remembered the advice

00:19:47

Speaker 1: Coko had given him that morning and said, sometimes nerves

00:19:53

Speaker 1: can be good, Coco, they give you the chance to

00:19:58

Speaker 1: be brave. Hocho thanked his friend for reminding him of

00:20:04

Speaker 1: his own advice, and, taking a deep breath, mustered up

00:20:09

Speaker 1: all his bravery. When the three of them performed their

00:20:14

Speaker 1: song together, all the other students danced around the classroom,

00:20:19

Speaker 1: jumping up and down with enthusiasm. When they finished, everyone

00:20:25

Speaker 1: gave a big round of applause. Wonderful, wonderful, hooted Missus Merryfeathers.

00:20:34

Speaker 1: That's just the thing practice does make perfect. Finally, it

00:20:43

Speaker 1: was the end of the school day. It had come

00:20:46

Speaker 1: around much more quickly than any of them could have imagined.

00:20:51

Speaker 1: See you all tomorrow, said Missus Merryfeathers. Kindly, don't forget

00:20:58

Speaker 1: your shoes on the way out. In the cloakroom, Coco

00:21:04

Speaker 1: tied his shoes, put on his coat, and shouldered his bag.

00:21:09

Speaker 1: He was just about to leave when he saw Prickles

00:21:13

Speaker 1: sitting on the floor, looking rather confused. Prickles wriggled his

00:21:18

Speaker 1: four feet in the air. His shoes were on the

00:21:21

Speaker 1: floor beside him. I could never remember which shoe goes

00:21:27

Speaker 1: on which foot, he said. Hoko slipped off his bag

00:21:33

Speaker 1: and knelt down to help his friend work out which

00:21:36

Speaker 1: shoe went on which foot. Out by the school gate, Coco, Camo,

00:21:43

Speaker 1: and Prickles all waved goodbye to each other. See you tomorrow,

00:21:48

Speaker 1: they said, and then went their separate ways home. When

00:21:53

Speaker 1: Coco reached his family's cabin, He climbed the ladder and

00:21:57

Speaker 1: went indoors. His mother was already busy making their dinner,

00:22:02

Speaker 1: and Coco went in and put his arms around her

00:22:05

Speaker 1: to give her a big hug. Welcome home, Coco, she said,

00:22:12

Speaker 1: how are you? And how was your first day of school?

00:22:17

Speaker 1: It was very fun, he said, And he told his

00:22:20

Speaker 1: mother about how kind and wise missus Merrifeathers was, and

00:22:25

Speaker 1: about the interesting art lesson where they learnt, all about

00:22:29

Speaker 1: where the other students lived in the sleepy forest. He

00:22:33

Speaker 1: told her about how the wind had mixed all the

00:22:36

Speaker 1: coats up together, and about how he and his friends

00:22:40

Speaker 1: had shared their lunch. Finally, he told her about learning

00:22:46

Speaker 1: to play the coolest blue guitar ever, and how he,

00:22:51

Speaker 1: Camo and Prickles had put on a musical performance for

00:22:55

Speaker 1: the rest of the class. Coco's mother seemed very pressed. Wow,

00:23:02

Speaker 1: she chuckled, that does sound like a pretty fun day, Coco.

00:23:08

Speaker 1: And how were your nerves In the end, It was

00:23:12

Speaker 1: just like you said, Coco told his mother. Everyone was

00:23:17

Speaker 1: a little bit nervous because it was the first day,

00:23:21

Speaker 1: But I told them your advice, A little bit of

00:23:25

Speaker 1: nerves can be good because it gives you a chance

00:23:29

Speaker 1: to be brave. Koko's mother gave him a big smile,

00:23:35

Speaker 1: as warm as the sun in a bright blue sky,

00:23:39

Speaker 1: and wrapped her arms around her son. You are a

00:23:44

Speaker 1: very brave boy, indeed, she said that evening. After a

00:23:52

Speaker 1: scrumptious dinner of rice and peas, Coco brushed his teeth,

00:23:57

Speaker 1: washed his face, and climbed into his pillow. Was as

00:24:03

Speaker 1: soft as ever, and he was very tired after his

00:24:07

Speaker 1: first day at school. Not so jittery tonight, are you, Coco,

00:24:14

Speaker 1: his mother said, stroking his little gray ears. Coco yawned.

00:24:22

Speaker 1: His eyes were creeping closed. Oh no, he said, I'm

00:24:30

Speaker 1: not nervous anymore. I'm just looking forward to going back

00:24:36

Speaker 1: to school tomorrow. I want to make sure I'm really

00:24:42

Speaker 1: well rested so I can learn as much as I can.

00:24:50

Speaker 1: Coco's mother laughed softly and reached over to turn out

00:24:56

Speaker 1: Coco's bedside light. She turned and at the door to

00:25:01

Speaker 1: look at her son. The Cocoa was already asleep, breathing

00:25:08

Speaker 1: gently and dreaming about the very next day.
