Speaker 1: evening at the beginning of September, Coco was being tucked

Speaker 1: into bed by his mother. His pillow was soft under

Speaker 1: his ears, the gentle rustling of leaves came from the

Speaker 1: trees around the cabin, and he had enjoyed a warm

Speaker 1: cup of cocoa. But for some reason, that night Coco

Speaker 1: was extra fidgety. He simply couldn't settle down. What's the

Speaker 1: matter with you, his mother asked him kindly. It's like

Speaker 1: you've got ants in your pants. Coco let out a giggle.

Speaker 1: His mother was always saying funny things like having ants

Speaker 1: in your pants or bees in your bonnets, which didn't

Speaker 1: make any sense when you really thought about them. I

Speaker 1: don't think I can sleep, he told her. I'm too

Speaker 1: busy thinking about tomorrow. Hoko's mother smiled with sympathy. Tomorrow

Speaker 1: was Coco's first day back at Sleepy Forest Elementary School,

Speaker 1: after he had spent a long summer off hanging out

Speaker 1: with his friends and relaxing. Are you excited, she asked him. Oh, yes,

Speaker 1: Hoko said, nodding his head up and down. I'm very excited.

Speaker 1: But then he paused, and a little frown appeared on

Speaker 1: his furry face. His mother, who had known Coco all

Speaker 1: his life and often had a sixth sense about how

Speaker 1: he was feeling, reached out a paw and touched his face.

Speaker 1: But you're a bit nervous. Who are you, she asked him.

Speaker 1: Coco nodded more slowly this time, but he didn't say anything.

Speaker 1: Sometimes he found it hard to admit he was nervous.

Speaker 1: significant than they had before. Now he stopped fidgeting so much,

Speaker 1: lay his head down on the soft pillow. His mother said,

Speaker 1: those are all very normal worries to have. In fact,

Speaker 1: I bet that every little animal in the sleepy forest

Speaker 1: is excited and nervous going to bed tonight. Nerves aren't

Speaker 1: entirely a bad thing, she told him. Sometimes having a

Speaker 1: few nerves can be good. How so, asked Coco. Well,
00:04:33
Speaker 1: his mother said, nerves can be put to good use.

Speaker 1: If you don't have a few of them, you'd never
00:04:41
Speaker 1: have the opportunity to be brave. Coco was always impressed

Speaker 1: by just how wise his mother was. She was absolutely

Speaker 1: right at her words. The last of Coco's remaining nerves

Speaker 1: had disappeared, and he told her that now he was

Speaker 1: only looking forward to tomorrow. Very good, she said, pulling

Speaker 1: the covers over him and giving him a kiss on

Speaker 1: the head. Now, the sooner you sleep, the sooner morning

Speaker 1: will come. She really was very wise. Cocho slept very

Speaker 1: peacefully that night, indeed, and dreamed of all the adventures

Speaker 1: he might get up to in the new school year.

Speaker 1: He woke up feeling fresh and rejuvenated. He hopped right

Speaker 1: out of bed and did a big morning stretch. Ah

Speaker 1: for the first time in weeks. He put on his

Speaker 1: school uniform, a white shirt, a pair of gray shorts,

Speaker 1: a bright green tie with the Sleepy Forest elementary logo

Speaker 1: on it, some socks, and his black leather shoes. He

Speaker 1: looked in the mirror. He was ready to go. His

Speaker 1: mother had already made him some porridge, and before he

Speaker 1: left the tree house, she handed him his school bag.

Speaker 1: I've put your pet lunch in there for you, she

Speaker 1: told him. Now go and have a wonderful first day

Speaker 1: back at school. Koko thanked his mother, gave her a

Speaker 1: big hug and set off through the forest for school.

Speaker 1: Outside the school gates, which swung open on two especially

Speaker 1: strong tree trunks, all of the other students were gathering.

Speaker 1: There were lots of faces there. He didn't recognize students

Speaker 1: from the old years and others newly arriving at Sleepy
00:06:43
Speaker 1: Forest Elementary. But then he saw two of his best friends,
00:06:48
Speaker 1: Camo the comeleon and Prickles the hedgehog, standing the other
00:06:52
Speaker 1: side of the gates. He went over to them and
00:06:55
Speaker 1: said hello. They both looked really pleased to see him. Hello,

Speaker 1: Coo Ko, they said. Ko Ko asked them both how
00:07:04
Speaker 1: they were doing this morning. How excited, said Prickles, I
00:07:08
Speaker 1: can't wait to learn new things and make new friends,
00:07:12
Speaker 1: And he gave a bristle of his needles to show
00:07:15
Speaker 1: just how excited he was. Kamo was a little more quiet.

Speaker 1: He had the extraordinary ability to change the color of
00:07:24
Speaker 1: his skin, sometimes to camouflage himself with his surroundings, or
00:07:29
Speaker 1: other times to put on a wonderful show. Today he
00:07:34
Speaker 1: was the color of leaves and tree bark. I'm feeling
00:07:39
Speaker 1: a bit shy, he whispered to Ko Ko. Ko. Ko

Speaker 1: put his arm around his friend and told him the
00:07:47
Speaker 1: advice his mother had given him the night before. It's
00:07:51
Speaker 1: good to have a few nerves. That's how you get

Speaker 1: to be brave. Ko Ko's advice made Kamo feel much

Speaker 1: much better. Indeed, his skin ripples and turns lots of

Speaker 1: bright colors like a rainbow. Thanks, Cocoa, he said. Just then,

Speaker 1: a big tawny owl with dark feathers and a thick

Speaker 1: pair of spectacles flew down in front of them. All

Speaker 1: the students fell silent. Hello everybody, and welcome to Sleepy Forest. Elementary,

Speaker 1: said the owl. My name is Missus Merry Feathers, and

Speaker 1: I'm your teacher this year. Cocoa, Camo, and Prickles looked
00:08:52
Speaker 1: at each other with relief. Missus Merry Feathers seemed like
00:08:56
Speaker 1: a very kind and very clever teacher all ready. Now,

Speaker 1: if you'd like to follow me, Missus Merryfeathers went on,

Speaker 1: let's start the first day of school. And with those words,

Speaker 1: she spread her broad wings and fluttered through the doors
00:09:20
Speaker 1: of the school. The students all followed after her. They

Speaker 1: found themselves in a room with benches running against the walls,

Speaker 1: with a row of pegs above them. This said, the

Speaker 1: owl is where we can leave our belongings. It's much

Speaker 1: warmer in the school than it is out in the forest.

Speaker 1: So everyone, hang up your coats on the pegs, leave

Speaker 1: your bags on the benches, and tuck your shoes neatly underneath.

Speaker 1: You'll find your name tag under your peg. The students

Speaker 1: all began to walk around the room searching for their pegs.

Speaker 1: Coco soon found his. It was in the corner, not

Speaker 1: very far from Camo's peg. He hung up his coat,

Speaker 1: slipped off his shoes and laid them next to each

Speaker 1: other beneath the bench, and left his bag on top

Speaker 1: of it. When they were all ready, the students followed

Speaker 1: Missus Merry Feathers into the classroom. Wow, whispered Camo. The

Speaker 1: classroom was amazing. The teacher's desk was at the front,

Speaker 1: with a tree branch that had been trained across it,

Speaker 1: perfect for Missus Merry Feathers to perch on, and all

Speaker 1: the other tables were arranged in the middle. Across the

Speaker 1: walls were all kinds of colorful displays and alpha cut

Speaker 1: out in stencils snaked overhead all of the times tables,

Speaker 1: and a perfect map of the sleepy forest. That's where

Speaker 1: I live, cried Coco, pointing to a spot on the map. Cocoa,

Speaker 1: Camo and Prickles all sat down at a table together.

Speaker 1: In the middle of the table were some large sheets
00:11:25
Speaker 1: of paper and a few packs of crayons with many
00:11:29
Speaker 1: different colors. Missus Meryfeathers had flown to her perch and
00:11:35
Speaker 1: now gave a loud hoot to quiet and everyone down.

Speaker 1: Now class, She said, the first lesson of the year
00:11:46
Speaker 1: will be art. You will all find some drawing materials
00:11:50
Speaker 1: in the middle of your desks. Your task for the

Speaker 1: morning is to draw a picture of your homes. She

Speaker 1: gave a click of her beak. Off you go. Cocoa, Camo,

Speaker 1: and Prickles all agreed that this was a very fun

Speaker 1: way to start the school year and got to work

Speaker 1: with great enthusiasm. Coco drew a picture of the cabin

Speaker 1: he shared with his family, nestled amongst the trees. He

Speaker 1: chose three different colors of green to show the variety
00:12:26
Speaker 1: and beauty of all their leaves. Prickles drew a picture
00:12:31
Speaker 1: of the burrow house he shared with his father and
00:12:33
Speaker 1: his baby siblings. It was underground and ever so cozy,

Speaker 1: perfect for hibernating in over the winter. On the walls,
00:12:43
Speaker 1: he made sure to add the brushes that his family
00:12:47
Speaker 1: used to clean their spines and make them shine. Camo

Speaker 1: drew a picture of his family's home, which was down
00:12:55
Speaker 1: by Sleepy River. He made the river water sparkle, and

Speaker 1: drew a wardrobe full of all his favorite fancy dress clothes.

Speaker 1: He worked very hard, using many crayons to make his
00:13:09
Speaker 1: bedroom walls shimmer as though they were covered in velvet.

Speaker 1: That's amazing, said Prickles, looking over at Camo's drawing. Yes, Camo,

Speaker 1: Koko agreed, you're a truly talented artist. Camo blushed a little.

Speaker 1: Oh thanks, guys, he said. It must be your natural

Speaker 1: flare for color, Coco said, making Camo turn completely red.

Speaker 1: When everyone in the class had finished their drawings, they

Speaker 1: took turns standing at the front, showing each other their
00:13:53
Speaker 1: hard work. Coco had never imagined that all the people

Speaker 1: in Sleepy Forest lived in such wondrous places. The beavers

Speaker 1: in the dam they built themselves, the dolphins in their

Speaker 1: underwater palaces, the flamingoes in their beach huts. Soon enough,

Speaker 1: missus Merry Feathers rang a bell it was time for lunch.

Speaker 1: They all formed an orderly line and filed neatly out

Speaker 1: of the classroom. But in the cloakroom they discovered that

Speaker 1: during the excitement of the art lesson, they hadn't noticed

Speaker 1: a huge blast of wind had blown through the door,

Speaker 1: pulling all the coats off their hooks and leaving them

Speaker 1: in a jumbled heap on the floor. Prickles was worried,

Speaker 1: how will we ever find out whose coat is who's.

Speaker 1: Don't worry missus, Merry Feathers responded calmly, this is why

Speaker 1: all of your parents has sowed your name tags into
00:15:00
Speaker 1: your coats, so that way you won't lose them. So

Speaker 1: all the students began to rifle through the big pile

Speaker 1: of coats, checking the name tags in the collars and

Speaker 1: handing them to their rightful owners. It turned out that

Speaker 1: it was a good thing that the wind had blown

Speaker 1: through in the end, because it gave Cocoa, Camo, and
00:15:26
Speaker 1: Prickles the chance to meet many of their new classmates
00:15:30
Speaker 1: and give them back their coats. Out in the playground,

Speaker 1: they all sat down in a circle. Coco searched through
00:15:40
Speaker 1: his bag and pulled out the packed lunch his mother

Speaker 1: had made him cheese sandwiches with extra eucalyptus leaves delicious.

Speaker 1: In his lunch box, Camo had a couple of oranges

Speaker 1: cut up into slices. Prickles had three pots of yogurt,

Speaker 1: one chocolate flavor, one raspberry flavor, and the last one

Speaker 1: cookies and cream. His dad had slipped a slice of

Speaker 1: brownie into his box too. Prickles's dad was one of

Speaker 1: the best bakers in all of Sleepy Forest. The three

Speaker 1: friends shared all their lunches. Coco cut his sandwich into

Speaker 1: slices and passed them around. Camo handed out segments of orange,

Speaker 1: and Prickles gave Cocoa and Camo a yogurt each and

Speaker 1: a bite of brownie too. They agreed that they would

Speaker 1: always share their lunches because it meant that they could

Speaker 1: each enjoy a bit of everything after they'd eaten. The

Speaker 1: whole class played in the playground. Champ the Chimpanzee taught

Speaker 1: everyone how to hop from monkey bar to monkey bar

Speaker 1: as though they were flying through the air, which every

Speaker 1: thought was a whole lot of fun. When missus Merry

Speaker 1: the classroom and took their seats. Next to the teacher's

Speaker 1: perch was a big wooden box covered with a blue

Speaker 1: sheet of fabric. It was all rather mysterious. This afternoon,

Speaker 1: the wise owl announced, we will be learning to play

Speaker 1: musical instruments. And with these words, she pulled the blue

Speaker 1: sheet off the box with a flourish to reveal a

Speaker 1: chest full of musical instruments. All of the students cheered.

Speaker 1: They were very excited to learn to play musical instruments.

Speaker 1: Each student took it in turn to go up to

Speaker 1: the big wooden chest and take from it an inch

Speaker 1: instrument of their choice. Prickles took a xylophone with two

Speaker 1: wooden sticks. Camo took out a clarinet. Finally, it was

Speaker 1: Coco's turn. He went up to the chest, looked through it,

Speaker 1: and finally saw the musical instrument he wanted, a groovy

Speaker 1: looking blue guitar with bright yellow stars and lightning bolts

Speaker 1: decorated all over it. This one's for me, he cried,

Speaker 1: and carried the guitar back to his friends. For the

Speaker 1: rest of the afternoon, they practiced their musical instruments. At first,

Speaker 1: none of them were very good. Prickles couldn't hit his

Speaker 1: xylophone to the right beat. Camo blew into his clarinet

Speaker 1: and it came out as a loud squeak, and Coco
00:18:56
Speaker 1: kept seeming to pluck the wrong string of his guitar.

Speaker 1: But as time went by and they continued to practice,

Speaker 1: they found they were getting better and better. Prickles discovered

Speaker 1: he actually had a natural sense of rhythm. Camo's clarinet

Speaker 1: playing sounded like the most beautiful bird song, and Coo

Speaker 1: Ko learned cord after chord on his snazzy blue guitar.

Speaker 1: It wasn't so different from the ukulele in the end.

Speaker 1: At the end of the class, the teacher asked them

Speaker 1: to perform a song together. At first, Cooko felt a

Speaker 1: bit nervous to put on a show in front of

Speaker 1: the whole class, but Camo the comedian remembered the advice

Speaker 1: Coko had given him that morning and said, sometimes nerves

Speaker 1: had shared their lunch. Finally, he told her about learning

Speaker 1: Camo and Prickles had put on a musical performance for

Speaker 1: the rest of the class. Coco's mother seemed very pressed. Wow,

Speaker 1: she chuckled, that does sound like a pretty fun day, Coco.

Speaker 1: And how were your nerves In the end, It was

Speaker 1: just like you said, Coco told his mother. Everyone was

Speaker 1: a little bit nervous because it was the first day,
