[00:03:19] Sweet dreams.
[00:03:22] Now then, tonight we're joining Coco and his friends on a most special night, All Hallows' Eve.
[00:03:30] Or, as it's better known, Halloween.
[00:03:33] Do you celebrate it?
[00:03:35] Do you prefer to go out and celebrate or stay in?
[00:03:38] I know which one I prefer, but then I'm old.
[00:03:42] Coco has very clear ideas of how he's celebrating this year, and it's by dressing up and going out trick-or-treating with his friends around Sleepy Forest.
[00:03:51] Or rather, Spooky Forest.
[00:03:54] Don't worry though, there are no frights to be had in this story, absolutely none.
[00:03:59] It's a super cosy one.
[00:04:01] So, get comfy, lie back in bed, and find your comfiest place.
[00:04:08] Perhaps poof up your pillow and flap your duvet around a bit so it's all really snug.
[00:04:13] And then close your eyes.
[00:04:16] Hmm.
[00:04:17] And then maybe breathe in and out a little bit.
[00:04:21] Just to steady yourself, and get used to the idea of being in bed at the end of the day and just relaxing.
[00:04:32] Okay.
[00:04:33] You are going to need your imagination a little bit for this one, as the costumes are incredible.
[00:04:40] Okay, it's time to begin.
[00:04:43] Coco goes trick-or-treating by Luke Prendergast.
[00:04:47] Deep in the heart of a far away forest stood a cosy wooden cabin.
[00:04:59] Inside the cabin lived a family of koalas and a little panda.
[00:05:04] And outside the cabin, on this very evening, sat a pumpkin with a jagged mouth, big bright eyes, and a candle flickering away inside.
[00:05:14] That's because this evening was no ordinary evening.
[00:05:20] This evening was the 31st of October.
[00:05:24] This evening was Halloween.
[00:05:27] Coco had been excited about Halloween for quite some time.
[00:05:32] It was always one of his favourite nights of the year,
[00:05:36] when sleepy forest was transformed, for one night only, into spooky forest.
[00:05:42] Pumpkins were hung out all over the forest, and spiders draped their silken cobwebs over branches and bushes and rooftops.
[00:05:51] All the forest creatures strung up bunting in the shapes of ghosts and ghouls and witches' hats across their homes.
[00:06:00] And the autumn fairies cast a spell on the sleepy river, turning its crystal clear waters purple for the day.
[00:06:09] Just a couple of days before, Coco had gone to a pumpkin carving workshop, held by Buck the Beaver at his dam on the river.
[00:06:18] There were lots of folks there, all carving faces into the dozens of pumpkins that Hamper the Hare had diligently been growing in his pumpkin patch, just for the occasion.
[00:06:31] Coco had carved his own, and that's the one that sat outside his family's cosy wooden cabin now.
[00:06:38] And while at the pumpkin carving workshop, he told his best friends Camo and Prickles that they should come over on Halloween night.
[00:06:47] We can make costumes, he told them.
[00:06:50] And then, before we go out trick-or-treating, my mum says she'll make us a pretty spooky dinner.
[00:06:57] What do you say?
[00:06:59] Oh yeah, said Camo and Prickles in unison.
[00:07:03] And so, one Halloween evening, Camo and Prickles knocked on the door of Coco's log cabin, and his mum let them in.
[00:07:12] Coco's upstairs, she said.
[00:07:15] He's keen to get started on those costumes.
[00:07:19] Coco had a big wooden chest full of dressing-up clothes, which came in very useful for all the parties and events that took place in Sleepy Forest.
[00:07:30] He also had another big box full of crafts materials, just in case they needed to make some new accessory or item of clothing that wasn't already contained in the dressing-up chest.
[00:07:43] Both boxes were open when his friends walked into the room, and he gave them both a big wave.
[00:07:51] Come on, guys, he cried.
[00:07:54] It's time to pick what we're dressing up as.
[00:07:58] Coco had already decided that he wanted to go as a wizard.
[00:08:03] He had a long black cape, a tall black hat, and an old broomstick that his mum had given him out of the cupboard.
[00:08:13] Camo decided that he wanted to go as a goblin.
[00:08:16] He closed his eyes and turned his marvellous colour-changing skin into a bright bogey green.
[00:08:25] Coco crafted him some big stick-on ears with the materials from his craft box, and gave him a patchwork coat and a pair of dungarees to wear, which looked as though they'd come right out of a storybook.
[00:08:38] And Prickles, finally, decided that he wanted to be a bat.
[00:08:44] So, using some big pieces of card, which he painted black, Coco fashioned his hedgehog pal a big set of bat wings.
[00:08:54] Together with Camo, they carefully attached them to Prickles' back, being particularly careful not to get their fingers pricked by his spines.
[00:09:04] On his head, Prickles placed a pair of black bat's ears, which he found in the dressing up box.
[00:09:11] They all looked around at each other, very impressed indeed.
[00:09:17] We look brilliant, said Coco.
[00:09:21] Super spooky, Prickles agreed.
[00:09:25] Hey, Coco, said Camo.
[00:09:29] Where's Kira?
[00:09:31] Doesn't she need to choose a costume to come trick-or-treating with us?
[00:09:35] Kira!
[00:09:37] Coco had almost forgotten about his little panda sister.
[00:09:41] She'd gone to have a lie down earlier because she was feeling a little sleepy.
[00:09:46] He'd go and check on her now.
[00:09:49] So Coco crept into the next door bedroom.
[00:09:53] The curtains were drawn, and the only light was a pale pink glow coming from the nightlight.
[00:10:00] Coco could see the bumpy shape of Kira beneath the covers, rising and falling gently in time with her breaths.
[00:10:08] He whispered.
[00:10:13] Kira, are you awake?
[00:10:16] Kira rolled over in her bed and rubbed her eyes with balled up fists.
[00:10:22] Coco, she said sleepily.
[00:10:26] Is that you?
[00:10:29] Yes, it's me.
[00:10:31] Coco went over and sat on the edge of her bed.
[00:10:34] Do you want to come and choose a costume?
[00:10:38] It's almost time to head out trick-or-treating.
[00:10:42] Kira gave a big yawn and blinked at him very slowly.
[00:10:49] Oh, Coco, she said.
[00:10:53] I'm so tired.
[00:10:57] It's been such a long and tiring week.
[00:11:02] I don't think I have the energy to come trick-or-treating.
[00:11:08] Really?
[00:11:09] Coco asked.
[00:11:11] But you won't want to miss it.
[00:11:14] It's okay, Kira said, and gave another huge yawn which she simply couldn't stifle.
[00:11:24] Halloween is your favorite night.
[00:11:27] Really, I'd much rather have a nice long sleep and feel fresh and wide awake tomorrow.
[00:11:35] You have fun trick-or-treating with prickles in camo, and make sure you say hi to them from me.
[00:11:44] Kira really did seem like a very tired little panda bear.
[00:11:49] So Coco gave her a big hug and watched as she rolled over and fell straight back asleep.
[00:11:57] Then he crept back out of the room and told Camo and prickles that Kira was too tired to come trick-or-treating with them.
[00:12:07] Oh no, said prickles.
[00:12:11] That's such a shame.
[00:12:14] But it's important that she gets plenty of rest if she's tired, said Camo.
[00:12:21] Just then, Coco's mom called upstairs that it was dinner time.
[00:12:26] So Coco, Camo and prickles all headed down to the kitchen, where all sorts of delicious smells were drifting about the warm room.
[00:12:38] They each washed their hands at the sink, then took a seat around the table.
[00:12:43] Smells delicious, mom, said Coco.
[00:12:47] What's for dinner?
[00:12:50] Coco's mom placed a big bowl in front of them.
[00:12:56] Tonight, she said in a ghoulish voice.
[00:12:59] We have witch's hair and frog's eyes.
[00:13:05] Then she gave them a little wink.
[00:13:08] Don't worry, she added in a whisper.
[00:13:10] It's not really witch's hair or frog's eyes.
[00:13:13] It's just spaghetti with a vegetable sauce.
[00:13:17] But I've dyed it black and green with a special food dye.
[00:13:21] Isn't it awful?
[00:13:25] Absolutely revolting, said Coco, smiling with delight.
[00:13:30] The scariest meal I've ever seen, Camo agreed.
[00:13:35] Jolly good, said Coco's mom.
[00:13:38] Well, tuck in before it gets cold.
[00:13:41] The meal was not only scary, it was absolutely scrummy too.
[00:13:48] The three boys wolfed it all down and then they were ready to go trick or treating.
[00:13:54] They stood by the door while Coco's mom handed them each a bucket in the shape of a cauldron, in which to collect the night's bounty.
[00:14:02] Have fun, she told them.
[00:14:06] And remember, be good.
[00:14:09] Trick or treating is a fun tradition for everyone.
[00:14:13] And it should never, ever be used as an excuse to play mean tricks on people.
[00:14:19] Be respectful of our forest neighbors so that everyone can enjoy the Halloween tradition for many years to come.
[00:14:28] Yes, mom, Coco said, and the others nodded.
[00:14:32] They understood exactly what she meant.
[00:14:36] Being kind to the other residents of sleepy forest was the number one priority for them all.
[00:14:44] Out they went into sleepy forest and made their way through the trees.
[00:14:50] Here and there they saw other forest folks going about their trick or treating.
[00:14:56] They saw kids dressed up as toads and ghosts, as ominous black dogs and enchanted teapots.
[00:15:05] A troop of little ducklings were all dressed up as matching magical cats.
[00:15:10] And there was even a young elephant who dressed up as a clown.
[00:15:17] Everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun already and waved and called out,
[00:15:23] Happy Halloween to everyone they passed.
[00:15:28] Where shall we go first?
[00:15:31] Coco asked his two friends.
[00:15:34] Camo scratched his chin thoughtfully.
[00:15:39] Well, he said.
[00:15:42] Cuthbert the camel's observatory is just down there.
[00:15:46] We could go and knock on his door first.
[00:15:49] Coco and Prickles agreed that this was a great idea.
[00:15:53] And so they set off down a forest path until they saw the cool gray stone of the stargazing observatory looming in front of them.
[00:16:05] The whole thing had been draped in black fabric for Halloween so that it currently looked more like a witch's lair than an astronomy facility.
[00:16:16] They went up to the door and Prickles gave it three sharp knocks with his knuckles.
[00:16:24] After a moment, they heard footsteps and the observatory door swung open.
[00:16:31] Trick or treat.
[00:16:33] In front of them stood Cuthbert the camel dressed in a full space suit.
[00:16:39] It looked as though he wasn't just studying space.
[00:16:43] He was planning on traveling there.
[00:16:47] Oh, hello there, you three scary creatures, he said with a laugh.
[00:16:55] It'll be a treat for me, thank you very much.
[00:17:00] You can keep whatever tricks you have got hidden up your sleeves for someone else.
[00:17:05] And from behind his door, Cuthbert pulled out a tray of delicious looking treats.
[00:17:15] Raspberry marble brownies and little cupcakes with intricately designed icing sugar spiders sitting on top of them.
[00:17:23] I made them myself, he said.
[00:17:27] Go on, take what you want.
[00:17:30] So Coco, Camo and Prickles all took a brownie and a cupcake each, took a small bite and put the remainder in their miniature cauldron buckets.
[00:17:42] Would you like to know what the spookiest constellation in the whole night sky is?
[00:17:50] Cuthbert asked them.
[00:17:53] Oh, yes, please, said Prickles through a mouthful of cupcake.
[00:17:59] Well, in my opinion, said Cuthbert, it would have to be Lupus the wolf.
[00:18:08] There he is up there, those several stars you can see twinkling there.
[00:18:15] Legend has it that Lupus was found as a little baby and raised by a pack of wolves.
[00:18:22] And when he was grown up, he seemed to be something in between.
[00:18:27] And that was how werewolves came to be.
[00:18:31] Those humans who turn into wolves whenever the full moon comes out.
[00:18:36] Pretty spooky, huh?
[00:18:38] Well, excellently spooky, Cuthbert, Camo agreed.
[00:18:43] And Coco said, almost as excellent as these cupcakes.
[00:18:49] And so they finished eating and thanked Cuthbert for their treats.
[00:18:55] Happy Halloweening, the camel replied and swung the door shut.
[00:19:01] Coco, Camo and Prickles made their way back up the path from the stargazing observatory, joking and chatting about werewolves.
[00:19:11] When Prickles suddenly stopped still and said, hey, look there.
[00:19:18] He pointed through the woods.
[00:19:20] Coco and Camo stared where he pointed, but they couldn't see anything.
[00:19:26] They looked again, and then they saw it.
[00:19:30] A giggling figure hidden under a white sheet, just like a ghost.
[00:19:36] It peeked out from behind a tree.
[00:19:39] But when the three friends blinked, it disappeared, as though it had been made of nothing but thin air.
[00:19:46] They looked after it, filled with wonder.
[00:19:50] But it seemed like the chuckling ghost, whoever it may be, had disappeared.
[00:19:57] And so they continued to make their way through sleepy forest.
[00:20:03] Soon, they were walking through some pine trees that moved their branches so that the wind whistled right through them.
[00:20:11] It was pretty awesome.
[00:20:14] Coco, Camo and Prickles got so caught up with making ghosty sounds back at the trees,
[00:20:21] that they didn't notice when they turned down a path and ended up outside a big building with a covered up swimming pool beside it.
[00:20:31] Pickle the Frogs Home Suite Home Hotel, said Camo.
[00:20:37] How did we end up here?
[00:20:40] Well, Coco replied.
[00:20:43] Since we are here, we may as well go and knock on the door.
[00:20:48] The three of them went up to the big wooden door of the hotel, and Camo wrapped his hand against the door three times.
[00:20:58] There was a shuffling sound from within, and the door swung open.
[00:21:04] Trick or treat!
[00:21:07] Pickle the Frog, dressed to the nines in a waistcoat and bow tie with a monocle over his eye, gave a cry of delight.
[00:21:16] Oh, how fantastically spooky the three of you look, he said, looking at their costumes one by one.
[00:21:28] And would you like to know a little thing about me?
[00:21:33] I've always secretly liked the trick part of Halloween.
[00:21:38] So, today, you terrifying young creatures, I shall select Trick.
[00:21:47] Show me your best shot.
[00:21:49] The trick or treaters had been prepared for this.
[00:21:54] Coco cleared his voice and said,
[00:21:58] If you refuse to give us a treat, then you'll have to smell our feet.
[00:22:05] And all at once, Coco, Camo and Prickles whipped off their socks and waved them in the air.
[00:22:12] Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, cried Pickle the Frog, clutching his belly and laughing.
[00:22:19] They are pretty pongy feet.
[00:22:23] Okay, okay.
[00:22:25] You can put them away now.
[00:22:27] That was a terrifically good trick.
[00:22:31] So good, in fact, that I think you all deserve treats anyway.
[00:22:39] Coco, Camo and Prickles put their socks back on pretty quickly.
[00:22:45] Even they didn't like the smell of their own feet.
[00:22:49] They had a little bit of a treat and then held out their cauldron bucket so that Pickle the Frog could drop a handful of chocolate frogs into each.
[00:22:58] These are straight from Papa Praline's chocolate factory, he told them.
[00:23:05] And remember, too much chocolate is bad for you and rots your teeth.
[00:23:12] So make sure you feast in moderation.
[00:23:17] Oh yes, Pickle, said Coco.
[00:23:20] We'll only have a little bit of chocolate every now and then.
[00:23:25] The three of them thanked Pickle profusely.
[00:23:29] And in response, the frog gave them a very low bow.
[00:23:33] Then he shut the door and the trick-or-treaters continued on their journey through sleepy forest.
[00:23:41] After a few minutes, Camo stopped in his tracks.
[00:23:46] What's that sound? He said.
[00:23:50] Coco and Prickles listened out.
[00:23:53] It's just the wind in the pine trees again, Coco said.
[00:23:58] No, it's not, replied Camo.
[00:24:02] I can hear something else.
[00:24:05] He looked up into the trees and then he spotted something.
[00:24:11] Look, he said, pointing up.
[00:24:14] Is that ghost again making silly sounds?
[00:24:18] And sure enough, there was the silly ghost, chuckling and making ghosty noises, waving its hands in the air.
[00:24:28] Then it disappeared out of sight.
[00:24:33] How peculiar, said Coco, giggling.
[00:24:38] I wonder whether it's a real ghost.
[00:24:42] I never knew we had any of those in sleepy forest.
[00:24:47] Me neither, said Prickles.
[00:24:51] Fairies?
[00:24:52] Sure.
[00:24:53] And little imps.
[00:24:55] And unicorns.
[00:24:57] And dragons.
[00:24:59] And magical talking trees and ancient wizards.
[00:25:03] But never ghosts.
[00:25:06] Very strange indeed, Camo concurred.
[00:25:11] And the three friends carried on walking.
[00:25:15] They were suddenly aware of all the mystery sleepy forest held.
[00:25:21] They wondered when the ghost had moved in and which of the little cottages and cabins was theirs.
[00:25:29] They took a forest path that led down through the trees until, at last, they reached the sleepy river, where the enchanted purple water trickled by.
[00:25:43] Under the fairy lights it glowed beautifully.
[00:25:46] They walked along the river bank, the sound of leaves crunching under their feet, until they saw a gentle light ahead.
[00:25:59] Oh, murmured Coco.
[00:26:02] We've made it to Buck the Beaver's Dam.
[00:26:06] Let's go give him a knock.
[00:26:09] So the three friends crossed the sturdy bridge, connecting the dam to the river bank.
[00:26:16] And this time, Coco knocked loudly on Buck's door.
[00:26:21] Once.
[00:26:22] Twice.
[00:26:24] Thrice.
[00:26:25] There was a scraping sound from inside.
[00:26:28] Then the door swung open.
[00:26:32] Trick or treat!
[00:26:35] There was Buck the Beaver.
[00:26:37] In his plaid shirt and hat was big fluffy ear flaps, and a big wide smile on his face.
[00:26:48] Three little monsters, he said.
[00:26:51] Don't do anything spooky to me.
[00:26:54] Treat, treat, you can all have treats.
[00:26:57] And with these words, Buck wandered back into his house.
[00:27:02] And after a few moments, returned bearing the most delicious looking pie any of them had ever seen.
[00:27:10] What's in it?
[00:27:11] Coco asked him.
[00:27:13] And Buck told them that it was pumpkin pie.
[00:27:16] We had a few pumpkins left over after the pumpkin carving workshop, he explained.
[00:27:23] So I thought I might as well do something with them.
[00:27:28] Buck cut three generous wedges of pumpkin pie, wrapped them up in napkins, and slipped a slice each into the three cauldron buckets.
[00:27:40] And here's an extra piece, he said, dropping a final slice into Coco's buckets.
[00:27:48] For little Kira, wherever she may be.
[00:27:53] Kira's asleep in bed, Coco said.
[00:27:56] She was too tired for trick or treating.
[00:27:59] But when she wakes up fresh and rested tomorrow morning, I bet she'll be very happy to tuck into your pumpkin pie, Buck.
[00:28:10] Coco, Camo and Prickles wished Buck the Beaver a happy Halloween and turned away from the dam.
[00:28:19] It was late now.
[00:28:21] The full moon was high in the sky, its silver light pouring down through the trees, turning the sleepy forest into a magical wonderland.
[00:28:34] The three friends discovered that their buckets were practically full, and that they were all pretty tired.
[00:28:44] Prickles gave a big yawn, and then Camo caught it, and then Coco caught it too.
[00:28:52] Until they were all three of them yawning.
[00:28:58] I guess it's time to go back home now, Coco said.
[00:29:04] I'm almost ready for my bed.
[00:29:07] The others agreed with him, and so they made their way back through the silvery forest, past the nests and hovels and caves and cabins,
[00:29:21] where all the other families were getting ready for bed themselves.
[00:29:27] Soon enough, they reached Coco's cozy wooden cabin, where the light in the kitchen still let out an orange glow.
[00:29:37] They approached the door, Coco turned the handle, and they stepped inside.
[00:29:47] Coco's mum was in the kitchen, and when they stepped in, she smiled and asked them how their trick-or-treating adventures had gone.
[00:29:58] But before they had time to answer her question, there came a knock at the door behind them.
[00:30:05] That was peculiar.
[00:30:09] Who could be knocking at this time?
[00:30:12] Was it another trick-or-treater?
[00:30:15] Out late for a final trick-or-treat?
[00:30:20] Coco reached out.
[00:30:22] He turned the doorknob.
[00:30:24] He opened the door, andโฆ
[00:30:28] Most peculiarly, right in front of them at the door was the silly ghost.
[00:30:35] White drapes billowing in the wind, shouting, boo, and laughing away.
[00:30:43] It giggled, and giggled, and giggled.
[00:30:48] And the more the ghost giggled, the more Coco began to recognize the giggling.
[00:30:56] Yes, he was certain he'd know that laugh anywhere.
[00:31:03] Hey, he said.
[00:31:06] Hey, he said.
[00:31:06] I know who you are.
[00:31:09] And he reached out, pulled back the white drapes, and revealedโฆ
[00:31:16] Kira.
[00:31:18] Kira gave out one last giggle.
[00:31:22] Boo!
[00:31:23] Boo!
[00:31:24] She said.
[00:31:25] Did I scare you?
[00:31:28] Coco crossed his arms.
[00:31:31] You didn't scare me.
[00:31:33] Me neither, said Camo.
[00:31:37] Nor me, said Prickles.
[00:31:41] Kira said, I think I scared you all.
[00:31:45] The three boys were blushing, but they were smiling too.
[00:31:52] But Kira, said Coco, I thought you were asleep.
[00:31:58] You said you were tired, that you didn't even have the energy to come trick-or-treating with us.
[00:32:06] Kira grinned at her brother.
[00:32:09] It was just a ruse, she said.
[00:32:13] I pretended.
[00:32:15] Even Mum was in on it.
[00:32:18] It was all just a plan to spook you out.
[00:32:23] But it worked.
[00:32:25] Happy Halloween.
[00:32:28] With these words, Kira started her giggling again.
[00:32:32] And then Coco joined in, and Camo, and Prickles.
[00:32:37] And soon they were all giggling.
[00:32:41] Because they had to admit, Kira had played a pretty good trick on them.
[00:32:48] But now, Kira said, I want to hear all about your trick-or-treating adventures.
[00:32:55] Because even though I saw where you went, I had to keep far back so I didn't get to see any of your tricks or treats.
[00:33:06] She peered into Coco's bucket.
[00:33:11] Oh, she said.
[00:33:13] Is that pumpkin pie?
[00:33:18] It certainly is, said Coco.
[00:33:22] And Buck gave me an extra slice for you.
[00:33:26] Come on, he said.
[00:33:29] Let's sit down.
[00:33:30] We can have a slice of pie, and we'll tell you all about it.
[00:33:37] And so, Coco and Kira, and Camo, and Prickles, and Coco's Mum and Dad, all sat down at the kitchen table.
[00:33:51] Coco's dad poured everyone a nice mug of chamomile tea, and they divided up the pumpkin pie between them.
[00:34:00] And with the flames flickering on the table, and the wind whistling softly through the trees outside, the boys began to tell them all about their trick-or-treating adventures.
[00:34:17] Until, one by one, they yawned, and their eyes went drowsy.
[00:34:24] And then, of course, it was time for them all to go to bed, and journey into the land of sleep, where sweet, sweet dreams awaited them.
