Speaker 1: so we're going to get started right away as tonight
00:01:51
Speaker 1: we're joining Coco and his family in their cozy cabin
00:01:54
Speaker 1: on a very very special day. You see, tomorrow, Kco's
00:02:00
Speaker 1: family is going to get a little bit bigger. Lie
00:02:03
Speaker 1: back and close your eyes. Breathe steadily, and whilst you
00:02:09
Speaker 1: do that, perhaps behind your closed eyelids, try to picture
00:02:14
Speaker 1: the little wooden cabin where Coco and his family live
00:02:17
Speaker 1: in the middle of the forest. Take some more relaxing
00:02:22
Speaker 1: breaths and see that it's evening time in the forest.
00:02:27
Speaker 1: The sun is setting through the trees, and the air
00:02:31
Speaker 1: is full of bird song and a chirping of crickets.
00:02:37
Speaker 1: And breathe out. As you get even more comfy, It's
00:02:42
Speaker 1: time for me to begin. Coco's New Sister by Luke Prendergast.
00:02:55
Speaker 1: Deep in the heart of a far away forest stood
00:02:58
Speaker 1: a cozy wooden cabin. Inside the cabin lived a family
00:03:02
Speaker 1: of Koalas. The youngest member of the family was called Coco.
00:03:08
Speaker 1: Cocoa was an only Koala, he lived alone with his
00:03:12
Speaker 1: mum and his dad, grandma and grandpa, and he loved
00:03:15
Speaker 1: them all very much. In fact, he often thought to
00:03:18
Speaker 1: himself that he loved his family more than any koala
00:03:22
Speaker 1: had ever loved their family ever. But even though he
00:03:28
Speaker 1: loved his family very much and was an extremely happy
00:03:31
Speaker 1: little Koala, he did from time to time wonder what
00:03:35
Speaker 1: it would be like to have a brother or a
00:03:37
Speaker 1: sister too. Lots of his friends in Sleepy Forest had siblings,
00:03:42
Speaker 1: and it seemed such a lot of fun. Camo the
00:03:46
Speaker 1: Chameleon had a grown up brother, and together they liked
00:03:49
Speaker 1: to play tricks on each other. They would camouflage their
00:03:53
Speaker 1: bodies to make themselves blend in invisibly with their surroundings,
00:03:58
Speaker 1: and when the other was least expecting it, they would
00:04:01
Speaker 1: jump out boom. They loved to play practical jokes on
00:04:05
Speaker 1: each other like that. And Prickles the hedgehog had a
00:04:09
Speaker 1: whole bevy of little brothers and sisters. The youngest, newly born,
00:04:14
Speaker 1: still pink skinned and spineless. Brickles said that it made
00:04:19
Speaker 1: their den extra warm having all those little bodies in there,
00:04:22
Speaker 1: and it was all the more enjoyable when their mum
00:04:25
Speaker 1: read them bedtime stories at night, because there was a
00:04:28
Speaker 1: whole group of them to say bah or ooh when
00:04:33
Speaker 1: the good bits came. Families come in all sorts of
00:04:39
Speaker 1: shapes and sizes, Coco's mom told him one afternoon, as
00:04:43
Speaker 1: they were taking a walk down the bank of Sleepy River,
00:04:47
Speaker 1: No family is the same as another family, but all
00:04:51
Speaker 1: families are equally perfect. When she said this, Coco gave
00:04:57
Speaker 1: her a big koala hug because she was such a
00:05:00
Speaker 1: wise mum. And so Coko lived very happily in his
00:05:05
Speaker 1: cabin with his mom and dad, climbing trees and chomping
00:05:09
Speaker 1: on eucalyptus and hanging out with his friends from Sleepy
00:05:13
Speaker 1: Forest Elementary School. But then when evening came, when the
00:05:19
Speaker 1: moon was high over the forest and spilling its silvery
00:05:23
Speaker 1: light through the cabin windows, when Coco's mom tucked him
00:05:27
Speaker 1: into his warm, downy bed and told him that she
00:05:30
Speaker 1: had a surprise for him, a surprise, he repeated, his
00:05:37
Speaker 1: eyes growing wide, yes, she said, a surprise. Coco's mom
00:05:45
Speaker 1: told him that the following day, a brand new member
00:05:50
Speaker 1: of the family would be arriving. A young panda named
00:05:54
Speaker 1: Kira was moving to Sleepy forest, and she was going
00:05:58
Speaker 1: to be adopted into the family, so she will be
00:06:02
Speaker 1: your little sister, Hoko's mom said. Coco sat straight up
00:06:08
Speaker 1: in bed. He was suddenly very excited. He could feel
00:06:14
Speaker 1: it bubbling all the way through his body. He had
00:06:18
Speaker 1: so many questions. What was she like? Did she enjoy
00:06:22
Speaker 1: climbing trees? Did she like eucalyptus? Was she good at
00:06:26
Speaker 1: telling jokes or playing games? Or making fortresses out of
00:06:30
Speaker 1: twigs and leaves? Sh His mother whispered kindly, you'll find
00:06:38
Speaker 1: out all about that tomorrow. She'll be here around lunchtime,
00:06:43
Speaker 1: and after that you can show her all around Sleepy Forest.
00:06:48
Speaker 1: She gave Cocoa a kiss on his soft and fluffy head.
00:06:53
Speaker 1: The most important thing is that we all make here
00:06:58
Speaker 1: a feel very welcome. Indeed, Kira, what a lovely name,
00:07:05
Speaker 1: Coco thought as he fell asleep, The perfect name for
00:07:10
Speaker 1: a sister. The next morning, Coco was up as soon
00:07:16
Speaker 1: as the first light of dawn rippled across the sky.
00:07:21
Speaker 1: He had had a long and peaceful sleep, dreaming of
00:07:25
Speaker 1: a panda in a far off forest who would soon
00:07:29
Speaker 1: be making her way down Sleepy River towards their home.
00:07:37
Speaker 1: Now he was bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready
00:07:40
Speaker 1: to welcome his new sister Kira into the family. All morning,
00:07:47
Speaker 1: Cooko helped his parents get the place ready. Grandma and
00:07:52
Speaker 1: Grandpa were away for the weekend to give Kira some
00:07:56
Speaker 1: space to settle in before the house became full again,
00:08:00
Speaker 1: and Ko Ko's mum said they should try to make
00:08:03
Speaker 1: the house as calming and cozy as possible. For Kira's
00:08:07
Speaker 1: first night, ko Ko cleared out a cupboard so that
00:08:13
Speaker 1: Kira would have somewhere to put her clothes, and he
00:08:16
Speaker 1: helped his dad carry a new bed in his bedroom
00:08:20
Speaker 1: and covered it with fresh pillows and a nice thick douvet.
00:08:26
Speaker 1: Kira was going to share a room with him. Then
00:08:30
Speaker 1: he blew up some balloons and strung them up outside
00:08:33
Speaker 1: the cabin and in the kitchen. He asked his mum
00:08:37
Speaker 1: to help him while using the scissors, and together they
00:08:41
Speaker 1: cut some letters out of brightly colored pieces of paper
00:08:45
Speaker 1: and tied them together to make a sign that read
00:08:48
Speaker 1: Welcome home Kira. The time passed by remarkably quickly, and
00:08:56
Speaker 1: at midday, Ko Ko's dad left to pick up Kira
00:09:00
Speaker 1: from where she was arriving on Sleepy River. Soon enough,
00:09:05
Speaker 1: there came a knock on the cabin door. When ko
00:09:09
Speaker 1: Ko's mom opened the door, there stood his dad carrying
00:09:14
Speaker 1: a big purple suitcase, and next to him stood his
00:09:18
Speaker 1: new sister, Kira. She was younger than Coco, with black
00:09:24
Speaker 1: and white splotches all over her fur and a purple
00:09:27
Speaker 1: bow tied in her hair. She must have been feeling
00:09:31
Speaker 1: a little bit shy because when she saw them, she
00:09:34
Speaker 1: hid behind Coco's dad's leg. Hello, Kira, said Coco's mom.
00:09:42
Speaker 1: Welcome to our family. Kira smiled, but she stayed hidden
00:09:48
Speaker 1: behind Coco's dad's leg. Coko stepped forward and smiled a
00:09:54
Speaker 1: big smile. Hello, Kira, I'm Coco. I'm going going to
00:10:00
Speaker 1: be your big brother and we're going to have lots
00:10:04
Speaker 1: of fun together, I promise. Would you like a hug? Shyly,
00:10:11
Speaker 1: Kira blinked twice and then gave a small nod of
00:10:15
Speaker 1: her head. Coco stepped forward and Kira emerged from behind
00:10:21
Speaker 1: their dad's leg. Coco wrapped his arms around her, and
00:10:26
Speaker 1: she wrapped her arms around him. Koalas are notoriously good
00:10:32
Speaker 1: at hugs. He told her so a pandas she said
00:10:37
Speaker 1: quietly into his ear. Time for a tour of the cabin,
00:10:44
Speaker 1: Coco told her, and he took her hands to show
00:10:47
Speaker 1: her around. He showed her the kitchen and the living room,
00:10:52
Speaker 1: and the wooden balcony that looked out into the forest.
00:10:56
Speaker 1: He showed her the tree trunk that grew through the
00:11:00
Speaker 1: to the cabin, which they used to get up onto
00:11:03
Speaker 1: the top floor. Are you good at climbing trees, he
00:11:08
Speaker 1: asked her. Oh, yes, she replied, pandas are very good
00:11:14
Speaker 1: at climbing trees. And she showed him just how good
00:11:18
Speaker 1: at climbing she was, shimmying speedily up the tree trunk
00:11:22
Speaker 1: after him. That's mum and Dad's room, Hoko said, pointing
00:11:28
Speaker 1: through one door. That's grandma and Grandpa's room. And this
00:11:35
Speaker 1: is our room, and that that's your bed. Oh, Kira
00:11:43
Speaker 1: cried out in happy surprise. She ran over to the
00:11:46
Speaker 1: bed and picked up a pillow. The pillows are purple,
00:11:52
Speaker 1: she said. Purple is my favorite color. How did you
00:11:57
Speaker 1: know are I don't know, Coco said, putting a paw
00:12:04
Speaker 1: thoughtfully to his chin. It certainly was a curious coincidence.
00:12:10
Speaker 1: I guess it's just meant to be, he told her
00:12:13
Speaker 1: with a smile. Coco finished off his tour of the cabin.
00:12:19
Speaker 1: He showed Kia the box of toys under the window,
00:12:22
Speaker 1: and he showed her the cupboard he'd cleared out for her.
00:12:26
Speaker 1: He helped her unpack all of her purple clothes from
00:12:30
Speaker 1: her purple suitcase. Finally, Coco took Kia back down the
00:12:36
Speaker 1: tree trunk. That's the end of the tour, he said, Then,
00:12:43
Speaker 1: remembering he'd missed something, he lifted up his paw ah
00:12:48
Speaker 1: one last thing. He pointed at his mum and dad.
00:12:52
Speaker 1: These are my parents, and now they're yours too, and me,
00:12:58
Speaker 1: I'm your big brother. Kia was so delighted by the
00:13:04
Speaker 1: tour and to meet her whole new family that she
00:13:09
Speaker 1: gave Coco another big hug. Well, well, said their dad.
00:13:16
Speaker 1: Is that really the time? We all must be getting hungry?
00:13:21
Speaker 1: Isn't it time for lunch? It was? They all agreed,
00:13:26
Speaker 1: and Coco turned to his new sister and asked her
00:13:30
Speaker 1: if she'd like a lunch of delicious eucalyptus leaf sandwiches.
00:13:36
Speaker 1: Kia the Panda blushed a little and looked at Coco apologetically. Oh,
00:13:43
Speaker 1: she said, I don't eat eucalyptus. Coko looked at her
00:13:49
Speaker 1: in surprise. You don't eat eucalyptus. The little koala scratched
00:13:56
Speaker 1: his head. Well, what do you eat? We pandas liked
00:14:03
Speaker 1: to eat bamboo shoots and leaves, Kira explained. Coco stared
00:14:10
Speaker 1: at Kira with a feeling of worry beginning to fizz
00:14:14
Speaker 1: in his tummy. He didn't think they had any. If
00:14:19
Speaker 1: they didn't have any bamboo, then what would they do?
00:14:23
Speaker 1: What would Kira eat? But just as Coca was about
00:14:28
Speaker 1: to give voice to his warriors, his mum appeared beside
00:14:32
Speaker 1: them carrying a tray, and on the tray lay, much
00:14:37
Speaker 1: to Coco's surprise and wonder, a whole assortment of bamboo
00:14:44
Speaker 1: shoots and leaves. Delicious, said Kira. As Coco said, where
00:14:53
Speaker 1: did you find those? Coco's mum laughed a tinkling laugh
00:14:58
Speaker 1: at Coco's confused and told him to look out the window.
00:15:03
Speaker 1: When he did, Coco saw a whole new patch of
00:15:08
Speaker 1: ground had been dug outside, and from it were growing
00:15:13
Speaker 1: lots of new bamboo shoots. Wow, Coco cried with delight.
00:15:20
Speaker 1: You were prepared, And so Coco and his new sister
00:15:26
Speaker 1: Kira enjoyed a scrumptuous meal with their mum and dad.
00:15:31
Speaker 1: Eucalyipped as sandwiches for the koalas and a bamboo shoot
00:15:35
Speaker 1: sandwich for the panda. While they ate, they asked each
00:15:40
Speaker 1: other plenty of questions about what it was like where
00:15:43
Speaker 1: she had come from, and what life would be like
00:15:46
Speaker 1: in Sleepy Forest. By the end, they felt like they'd
00:15:51
Speaker 1: got to know each other pretty well. What are you
00:15:56
Speaker 1: two going to get up to now on Kira's first
00:16:00
Speaker 1: day here, their mom asked them. Coko told his mom
00:16:07
Speaker 1: that he thought they would go and introduce Kira to
00:16:10
Speaker 1: his friends, Camo and Prickles, who would be Kira's new
00:16:14
Speaker 1: friends too. I think that's a lovely idea. Their mom agreed,
00:16:23
Speaker 1: and so Coko and Kira poured on their shoes and
00:16:27
Speaker 1: did up their laces, and Kira slung a little purple
00:16:31
Speaker 1: backpack over her shoulders. Together, they stepped out of the
00:16:36
Speaker 1: cabin and into sleepy forest. The afternoon sun above them
00:16:42
Speaker 1: was beginning to dip low in the sky, sending wiggily
00:16:46
Speaker 1: shadows zigzagging all over the forest floor. Coko led the
00:16:54
Speaker 1: way confidently through the trees. As they trod across the
00:16:59
Speaker 1: dryly and sprouts of grass, Coco pointed out to Kira
00:17:04
Speaker 1: all the special landmarks and places of note, the tree
00:17:10
Speaker 1: on which he'd first learnt to climb, his dad supporting
00:17:14
Speaker 1: his back and promising he wouldn't let go, the toadstool circle,
00:17:19
Speaker 1: where if you came at twilight you could see the
00:17:22
Speaker 1: fairies perform their evening dance, And the impressive wooden dam
00:17:29
Speaker 1: that Buck the Beaver had recently built on top of
00:17:32
Speaker 1: the Sleepy River. Every time Coco pointed something out, Kira
00:17:39
Speaker 1: would clap her hands in wonder. Sleepy Forest is a
00:17:46
Speaker 1: magical place, she said, it truly is. Coco agreed, But
00:17:54
Speaker 1: as they continued walking, Coco noticed that Kira had fallen
00:17:59
Speaker 1: silent and a small frown had appeared on her face.
00:18:04
Speaker 1: Deciding that it would be the right big brotherly thing
00:18:08
Speaker 1: to do, ko Ko asked her if everything was okay? Oh,
00:18:14
Speaker 1: she said, and touched her purple bow a little nervously. Yes,
00:18:20
Speaker 1: everything is okay. But ko Ko could tell that Kia
00:18:25
Speaker 1: wasn't being entirely honest. He could remember plenty of times
00:18:31
Speaker 1: when something had been the matter with him, when he'd
00:18:34
Speaker 1: been worried or upset or concerned about something, but had
00:18:39
Speaker 1: pretended nothing was wrong. Those times, what he'd really wanted
00:18:46
Speaker 1: was for someone to very gently ask him if he
00:18:50
Speaker 1: was sure everything was okay, so that he'd be comfortable
00:18:54
Speaker 1: to tell them. So he tried to do this for
00:18:58
Speaker 1: Kia now. He told her that as her big brother,
00:19:04
Speaker 1: she could tell him anything she liked, it didn't matter.
00:19:09
Speaker 1: Kira touched her purple bow nervously again and then took
00:19:15
Speaker 1: a deep breath. It's only that she began, but then
00:19:23
Speaker 1: she stopped, seemed to think for a moment, and started
00:19:27
Speaker 1: again differently. I hope your friends like me. When she
00:19:34
Speaker 1: said this, ko Ko felt a tingling warmth moving through
00:19:39
Speaker 1: his chest and heart. He felt then that he was
00:19:45
Speaker 1: already starting to love and care for his little sister. Oh, Kira,
00:19:52
Speaker 1: he said, you don't have to worry about that. They're
00:19:57
Speaker 1: going to love you, And to reassure her even more,
00:20:05
Speaker 1: Coco put his arm around her shoulders. Then Kia gave
00:20:09
Speaker 1: a little sigh of relief and wrapped her arm around
00:20:13
Speaker 1: Coco's waist, and like that, they walked through the sleepy
00:20:19
Speaker 1: forest together. At last, they came to the shady little
00:20:24
Speaker 1: grove that Coco and his friends liked to play in,
00:20:28
Speaker 1: and there, just as he'd expected, they found Camo and
00:20:32
Speaker 1: Prickles Kira. Coko said, this is my friend Camo, and
00:20:40
Speaker 1: this is my friend Prickles. As he introduced each of
00:20:46
Speaker 1: his friends, they gave Kira a welcoming hug, though Coco
00:20:51
Speaker 1: was careful to warn Kira about hugging Prickles because sometimes
00:20:55
Speaker 1: when you were a bit too over enthusiastic with your affection,
00:21:00
Speaker 1: you were liable to get a sharp brick from one
00:21:02
Speaker 1: of his spines. Camo and Prickles, Coko said, his chest
00:21:09
Speaker 1: all puffed up with pride. This is Kira. She's my
00:21:16
Speaker 1: new little sister. Wow, cried Prickles. A new sister. That's
00:21:25
Speaker 1: so cool. How do you like Sleeping forest so far?
00:21:30
Speaker 1: Camo asked her, and Kira told him that she already
00:21:34
Speaker 1: thought it was a wonderful, magical place. It's a little
00:21:40
Speaker 1: bit like the forest I come from, she said, though
00:21:45
Speaker 1: it's also quite different. There are lots more creatures here.
00:21:51
Speaker 1: Coco noticed that there was a small frown of confusion
00:21:55
Speaker 1: on Prickles's face as he looked from Kira to Coco
00:21:59
Speaker 1: and back again. It looked like he wanted to ask something.
00:22:06
Speaker 1: Do you have a question, Prickles, he said, arm joshed
00:22:12
Speaker 1: the little one said Prickles, A very small one, he added,
00:22:18
Speaker 1: holding up his thumb and finger close together to show
00:22:22
Speaker 1: just how tiny his question was. Go ahead, Coco said,
00:22:29
Speaker 1: arm How is it that you two are brother and sister,
00:22:36
Speaker 1: Prickles asked, when you look so different. You're a koala
00:22:41
Speaker 1: cocoa with a big nose and a bushy gray tail,
00:22:46
Speaker 1: and Kira here is a panda with big black and
00:22:50
Speaker 1: white splotches all over her fur and a purple ribbon
00:22:54
Speaker 1: in her hair. Oh that's easy, Prickles, Hoko explained. Kira
00:23:02
Speaker 1: is my adopted sister, but she's my sister just as
00:23:06
Speaker 1: much as anyone else's sister is their sister. Hoko paused
00:23:12
Speaker 1: and scratched his head, trying to think up a way
00:23:16
Speaker 1: to explain it, and, as if by magic, the wise
00:23:22
Speaker 1: words that his mum had once told him while walking
00:23:25
Speaker 1: down the banks of Sleepy River came back to him.
00:23:30
Speaker 1: The truth is, Coco told them, are families come in
00:23:36
Speaker 1: all sorts of shapes and sizes. No family's the same
00:23:41
Speaker 1: as another family, but all families are equally perfect. Ah,
00:23:51
Speaker 1: said Prickles, nodding and smiling. That makes perfect sense. You're
00:23:58
Speaker 1: so wise, Coco, You are wise Cocoa. Camo agreed, families
00:24:06
Speaker 1: can look all kinds of different ways. For example, sometimes
00:24:13
Speaker 1: me and my brother look very alike, but other times,
00:24:19
Speaker 1: he said, and suddenly changed color, turning from a leafy
00:24:23
Speaker 1: green to a hot, bright pink. Other times we look
00:24:30
Speaker 1: nothing alike at all. Cocoa and Prickles laughed at Camo's
00:24:37
Speaker 1: very funny joke, but Kira was looking at him with
00:24:41
Speaker 1: her mouth wide open. That's the coolest trick I've ever seen,
00:24:50
Speaker 1: she said. It's not a trick, said Coco, still laughing,
00:24:56
Speaker 1: and explained that it was in a comeleon's nature to
00:25:00
Speaker 1: change color according to his mood. It certainly is, said Camo.
00:25:09
Speaker 1: And my favorite thing to do is be all of
00:25:14
Speaker 1: the colors at the same time, And with that, Camo
00:25:21
Speaker 1: turned all the colors of the rainbow red, blue and green, orange, yellow,
00:25:29
Speaker 1: and purple all at once. When Kira and the others
00:25:35
Speaker 1: had stopped clapping, Camo asked her what her favorite thing
00:25:39
Speaker 1: in the world to do was. Well, she said, my
00:25:46
Speaker 1: favorite thing is to make people ribbon bows just like mine,
00:25:54
Speaker 1: and she pointed with the purple ribbon on top of
00:25:57
Speaker 1: her head. Mean said, Prickles, you can make one of
00:26:04
Speaker 1: them for all of us. I sure can, Kira said.
00:26:12
Speaker 1: She slipped her purple backpack off her back and unzipped
00:26:16
Speaker 1: it to reveal a whole tumble of many different colored ribbons.
00:26:23
Speaker 1: I can do them right now, she said, you just
00:26:28
Speaker 1: have to tell me what color you want. Coco and
00:26:33
Speaker 1: his friends were very excited, and so together they all
00:26:39
Speaker 1: sat on the floor of the shady glade while Kira
00:26:43
Speaker 1: made them special bows. For Prickles, she made an orange
00:26:47
Speaker 1: one with little holes for his spines to go through.
00:26:52
Speaker 1: For Camo, she made a sparkling silver one, which she
00:26:56
Speaker 1: said would go well with any color he might choose
00:26:59
Speaker 1: to be on a whim. And for her big brother Cocoa,
00:27:04
Speaker 1: she made a bright red one and tied it very
00:27:08
Speaker 1: smartly around his neck. They were all utterly delighted with
00:27:14
Speaker 1: their new bows, and each of them gave Kia big
00:27:19
Speaker 1: hugs of thanks. When he thought Kiera couldn't hear, Prickles
00:27:27
Speaker 1: leant over to Cocoa and whispered in his ear. Your
00:27:32
Speaker 1: new sister is so cool, he said, We're all going
00:27:38
Speaker 1: to be the best of friends. But Kira, who had
00:27:44
Speaker 1: very good hearing despite all of the fur growing out
00:27:48
Speaker 1: of her ears, heard every single word that Brickles said,
00:27:54
Speaker 1: and she did her best not to blush with happiness worries.
00:28:01
Speaker 1: It seemed well for nothing. Coco's friends liked her, and
00:28:07
Speaker 1: she liked them too, very much. Indeed, already she felt
00:28:15
Speaker 1: very at home in Sleepy Forest, with her new family,
00:28:19
Speaker 1: her new friends, her brilliant big brother. She was very
00:28:26
Speaker 1: excited for all of the forest adventures that were to come.
00:28:31
Speaker 1: Families came in all sorts of sizes, and her one,
00:28:37
Speaker 1: as far as Kira was concerned, was the absolute best man.
00:29:03
