Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Kuala Moon, a podcast of
00:00:14
Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime
00:00:20
Speaker 1: a dream.
00:00:21
Speaker 2: As you may already know, we called our show Coco
00:00:25
Speaker 2: Sleep in honor of a little sleepy koala called Cocoa.
00:00:29
Speaker 2: We've already met many of his friends in sleepy Forest
00:00:33
Speaker 2: where he lives with his family, and we've heard how
00:00:36
Speaker 2: he celebrated a very special Christmas. In tonight's story, we
00:00:42
Speaker 2: again follow in his footsteps as he travels through a
00:00:46
Speaker 2: sleepy forest with his pink ukulele on a mission to
00:00:51
Speaker 2: find the song in his heart. Soon we'll wander through
00:00:56
Speaker 2: the woodland together and discover how nature's symph helps Cocoa
00:01:01
Speaker 2: on his quest. But before we get started, take a
00:01:07
Speaker 2: little time to snuggle down into your bed and make
00:01:12
Speaker 2: yourself as comfortable as you can, rig all your fingers
00:01:17
Speaker 2: and toes, and then snuggle down a little bit more,
00:01:23
Speaker 2: close your eyes and take some deep, relaxing breaths. And
00:01:30
Speaker 2: now this is Coco's Ukulele, written by Jillian Rogerson. Deep
00:01:45
Speaker 2: in the heart of sleepy forests stood a cozy wooden cabin.
00:01:50
Speaker 2: Inside the cabin lived a family of koalas the youngest
00:01:54
Speaker 2: Koala was called Cocoa. One sunny morning in June, Grandpa
00:01:59
Speaker 2: Koala and Coco was sitting in the living room doing
00:02:02
Speaker 2: a jigsaw puzzle together when Grandpa said, Cocoa, would you
00:02:08
Speaker 2: like to play the ukulele, the family ukulele. Coco asked,
00:02:15
Speaker 2: I would love to, Grandpa, but I don't know how
00:02:18
Speaker 2: to play it. Grandpa said it wasn't difficult to learn,
00:02:23
Speaker 2: and he was sure Coco would get the hang of
00:02:26
Speaker 2: it in no time at all. Grandpa got out of
00:02:30
Speaker 2: his comfy rocking chair and walked over to an antique
00:02:33
Speaker 2: cupboard at the back of the living room. He reached
00:02:37
Speaker 2: inside the cupboard and took out a pink ukulele that
00:02:40
Speaker 2: had been in the Koala family for generations. He lovingly
00:02:45
Speaker 2: ran his poor over the instrument before returning to Coco's
00:02:49
Speaker 2: side with a smile on his face. Grandpa said, it's
00:02:54
Speaker 2: your turn to look after this now. I know you'll
00:02:59
Speaker 2: take good care of it. He gave the ukulele to
00:03:03
Speaker 2: ko Ko. Ko Ko asked his grandpa what he should
00:03:07
Speaker 2: do first with the instrument, How did the strings work
00:03:11
Speaker 2: and which pau should he hold it in. He'll work
00:03:15
Speaker 2: it all out his Grandpa replied, go into the forest,
00:03:21
Speaker 2: be still and listen to the song in your heart,
00:03:25
Speaker 2: and then you'll know what to do. I don't think
00:03:29
Speaker 2: I have a song in my heart, ko Ko said.
00:03:34
Speaker 2: Grandpa smiled, you do, We all do. Off you go,
00:03:40
Speaker 2: it's time for my nap. He gave his grandson a
00:03:45
Speaker 2: little wave before settling back into the rocking chair. He
00:03:49
Speaker 2: pulled a wooden blanket over his knees and closed his eyes.
00:03:55
Speaker 2: Ko Ko felt a little bewildered but eager at the
00:03:58
Speaker 2: same time. He loved listening to his grandpa playing the ukulele,
00:04:03
Speaker 2: and so did the rest of the family. Could he
00:04:06
Speaker 2: possibly learn to play the beautiful instrument too, He wasn't sure,
00:04:13
Speaker 2: but he would try his best. Coco left the cabin
00:04:17
Speaker 2: and headed into the forest, holding the pink ukulele in
00:04:21
Speaker 2: one paw. The June sun was shining brightly over sleepy forest,
00:04:28
Speaker 2: and the fragrant aroma of wild flowers floated towards Cocoa
00:04:33
Speaker 2: on a gentle breeze. Coco wasn't sure how he would
00:04:38
Speaker 2: find the song in his heart, but decided to go
00:04:41
Speaker 2: for a walk Whilst he thought about it. His paw
00:04:46
Speaker 2: curled more firmly around the ukulele. Even though he didn't
00:04:51
Speaker 2: know how to play it yet, just having the instrument
00:04:55
Speaker 2: in his paw felt comforting, almost as though the ukule
00:05:00
Speaker 2: had been waiting for him to hold it. Feeling the
00:05:05
Speaker 2: welcome warmth of the sun on his back, ko Ko
00:05:09
Speaker 2: walked on through the forest. Rays of sunlight shone through
00:05:14
Speaker 2: the branches of trees and created flickering shadows that danced
00:05:20
Speaker 2: across the path. Birds tweeted merrily to each other as
00:05:25
Speaker 2: they swooped and soared through the air. A gentle breeze
00:05:31
Speaker 2: blew through the tops of the trees, making a soft
00:05:35
Speaker 2: whispering sound. It was a beautiful day. Ko Ko hung
00:05:41
Speaker 2: joyfully to himself, happy to be outside in the sunshine.
00:05:48
Speaker 2: He decided to head into a nearby meadow and find
00:05:52
Speaker 2: somewhere quiet to play the ukulele. He soon reached a
00:05:57
Speaker 2: flower strewn meadow. The long grass swayed gently in the breeze,
00:06:04
Speaker 2: creating a soft rustling sound. Co Ko walked through the
00:06:10
Speaker 2: meadow and trailed his free paw through the grass, feeling
00:06:15
Speaker 2: the softness of it against his fur. Butter yellow daisies
00:06:22
Speaker 2: and strawberry red poppies were strewn around the meadow like
00:06:26
Speaker 2: precious gems. A fragrant aroma of lavender and camomile scented
00:06:33
Speaker 2: the air. As he wandered through the meadow. The tips
00:06:38
Speaker 2: of co Ko's paws began to tingle a little, and
00:06:42
Speaker 2: he wondered what it would feel like to touch the
00:06:46
Speaker 2: strings of the pink ukulele. The little Koala moved over
00:06:52
Speaker 2: to a rock and perched on top of it. He
00:06:57
Speaker 2: gave the ukulele a long look before instinctively pulling it
00:07:03
Speaker 2: closer to his chest and curling his left paw around
00:07:08
Speaker 2: the neck of the instrument. His right paw came around
00:07:12
Speaker 2: the other side of the ukulele and rested lightly on
00:07:17
Speaker 2: the strings. All around him came the sounds of the
00:07:22
Speaker 2: meadow and the insects and birds who lived there. Fluffy
00:07:28
Speaker 2: bees buzzed as they flitted from flower to flower, Crickets
00:07:35
Speaker 2: chirped cheerfully, birds sang joyful melodies from the tree tops,
00:07:42
Speaker 2: and the wind whispered and sighed gently as it traveled
00:07:47
Speaker 2: through the tall swaying grass. Slowly and carefully, Coco ran
00:07:56
Speaker 2: his paw down the strings of the ukulele. An interesting
00:08:01
Speaker 2: sound came out. It sounded very similar to the sound
00:08:07
Speaker 2: of the gentle wind. Ko Ko tilted his head and
00:08:13
Speaker 2: listened more carefully to the melody of nature that surrounded him.
00:08:19
Speaker 2: It was a soothing sound and made him feel calm
00:08:24
Speaker 2: and relaxed. He moved his paw over the strings again,
00:08:32
Speaker 2: and then again and again. Before he knew it, Koko's
00:08:39
Speaker 2: paw was moving back and forth over the strings in
00:08:44
Speaker 2: perfect rhythm. The sound was enchanting and made ko Ko
00:08:50
Speaker 2: break into a smile. Feeling surer of himself, he proceeded
00:08:57
Speaker 2: to strum the ukulele with growing confidence, until he was
00:09:02
Speaker 2: playing a lighthearted tune that perfectly matched the harmony of
00:09:08
Speaker 2: the meadow. So engrossed was he and playing his ukulele,
00:09:16
Speaker 2: the Coco didn't notice an audience of rabbits, hedgehogs, and
00:09:21
Speaker 2: badgers had gathered in front of him. He only became
00:09:26
Speaker 2: aware of them when they broke into an appreciative applause
00:09:30
Speaker 2: at the end of his song. More more, they cried out.
00:09:37
Speaker 2: Coco blushed a little and said he wasn't very good
00:09:40
Speaker 2: at playing the ukulele. A rabbit clutched his paws to
00:09:45
Speaker 2: his chest and declared, oh, my little Koala friend, you
00:09:51
Speaker 2: are wrong about that. You play that ukulele as if
00:09:56
Speaker 2: you've been playing it all your life. I've never heard
00:10:01
Speaker 2: such a beautiful tune. It's utterly captivating. Please play some
00:10:07
Speaker 2: more for us, I'll try, Coco replied, shyly. Coco pushed
00:10:15
Speaker 2: himself off the rock and settled the ukulele more comfortably
00:10:20
Speaker 2: in his arms. He listened once more to the sounds
00:10:24
Speaker 2: around him, and then began to match the melody on
00:10:29
Speaker 2: his ukulele. As he got caught up in the utter
00:10:34
Speaker 2: joy of playing the instrument, his little tummy wiggled from
00:10:39
Speaker 2: side to side, he bounced lightly on his feet, and
00:10:45
Speaker 2: his ears bobbed in time to the music. He felt
00:10:49
Speaker 2: like the ukulele was part of him, as though its
00:10:53
Speaker 2: music was matching the beat of his heart. When Coco
00:10:59
Speaker 2: finished his son, he received another enthusiastic round of applause
00:11:05
Speaker 2: from the forest animals. He took a small bow and
00:11:09
Speaker 2: said thank you to them. At their request, he played
00:11:15
Speaker 2: two more songs. Some of the animals began to yawn
00:11:21
Speaker 2: and said the music was like a lullaby and it
00:11:25
Speaker 2: had made them very sleepy. The yawns were contagious, and
00:11:31
Speaker 2: soon all the animals were yawning. When Coco came to
00:11:38
Speaker 2: the end of his song, the woodland animals gave him
00:11:42
Speaker 2: sleepy goodbyes before heading to their homes for a nap.
00:11:48
Speaker 2: Coco wondered if there were other sounds in the forest
00:11:53
Speaker 2: that he could capture on his ukulele. There was only
00:11:57
Speaker 2: one way to find out. Leaving the meadow behind, Koko
00:12:03
Speaker 2: ventured on through sleepy forest. Before too long, he came
00:12:10
Speaker 2: to an old wooden bridge that span a gently flowing stream.
00:12:18
Speaker 2: Coco walked onto the bridge, feeding the warmth of the
00:12:21
Speaker 2: wooden boards beneath his feet. He stopped in the middle
00:12:26
Speaker 2: of the bridge and peered over the side. He carefully
00:12:32
Speaker 2: listened to the babbling sound of the sparkling water as
00:12:37
Speaker 2: it bubbled and tumbled over stones and around rocks. A
00:12:44
Speaker 2: couple of frogs croaked out happy helloes to each other
00:12:48
Speaker 2: from opposite sides of the river bank. A school of
00:12:54
Speaker 2: frolicking golden fish made small splashes as they swam through
00:12:59
Speaker 2: the water. Co Ko took a few moments to absorb
00:13:05
Speaker 2: the beautiful music. Then he placed his paw on the
00:13:10
Speaker 2: strings of his ukulele and gently plucked them. The sound
00:13:17
Speaker 2: that came from it matched the rhythm of the river
00:13:21
Speaker 2: and its wildlife. Smiling to himself, Coco added the song
00:13:27
Speaker 2: of the river to the melody of the meadow, and
00:13:31
Speaker 2: soon he had a new tune to play. His relaxing
00:13:37
Speaker 2: refrain caused another small crowd together, this time comprised of otters, toads,
00:13:47
Speaker 2: and a couple of ducks. Once more, the newly gathered
00:13:52
Speaker 2: audience gave the little koala a round of applause. When
00:13:57
Speaker 2: he'd finished playing his instrument, one of the ducks said,
00:14:04
Speaker 2: thank you so much for that enchanting tune. It has
00:14:09
Speaker 2: made my heart feel light with happiness and I can't
00:14:12
Speaker 2: stop smiling. Coco bashfully bowed his head and said thank you.
00:14:23
Speaker 2: The river animals asked for another song, which Coco was
00:14:27
Speaker 2: more than happy to play. He was getting used to
00:14:31
Speaker 2: holding the ukulele and how to pluck the strings in
00:14:36
Speaker 2: a way that made the best sound. As he played
00:14:41
Speaker 2: another song, he noticed some of the animals yawning and
00:14:46
Speaker 2: tiredly blinking their eyes. One by one, the river animals
00:14:53
Speaker 2: began to say goodbye to Coco before turning around and
00:14:59
Speaker 2: heading back home for a sleep. Cocoa lingered a little
00:15:05
Speaker 2: longer on the bridge and listened to the soft sounds
00:15:10
Speaker 2: that enveloped him. His heart felt light and carefree, and
00:15:17
Speaker 2: he wondered what other sounds awaited him in sleepy forest.
00:15:23
Speaker 2: He continued on his way. A cloud of lilac butterflies
00:15:32
Speaker 2: flitted towards him, their wings tipped with glimmering gold. They
00:15:39
Speaker 2: danced joyfully around the little Koala, and he couldn't resist
00:15:45
Speaker 2: taking up his ukulele and playing a melody that was
00:15:49
Speaker 2: in tune with their delicate dancing movements. The butterflies fluttered
00:15:56
Speaker 2: some more around Coco before flying away and into the trees.
00:16:03
Speaker 2: Coco lowered his ukulele and carried on walking. The memory
00:16:10
Speaker 2: of the beautiful butterflies made him feel warm and fuzzy inside.
00:16:18
Speaker 2: Soon he arrived at a small waterfall that flowed over
00:16:24
Speaker 2: silver flecked rocks. Coco stopped near it, lifted his head
00:16:33
Speaker 2: and felt a light mist settling on the tip of
00:16:38
Speaker 2: his nose. Taking a step back, he tilted his head
00:16:45
Speaker 2: and listened to the sound of the cascading water as
00:16:50
Speaker 2: it flowed into the stream below. Droplets of water landed
00:16:57
Speaker 2: on the shiny stones at the sides of the stream
00:17:01
Speaker 2: and created a calming, melodic beat. Coko took to playing
00:17:08
Speaker 2: his ukulele again, and it didn't take him long to
00:17:13
Speaker 2: harmonize his instrument with the song of the Waterfall. He
00:17:19
Speaker 2: added the dance of the butterflies to the song and
00:17:23
Speaker 2: made another new melody. Joy filled Coco's heart as he
00:17:30
Speaker 2: closed his eyes and swayed from side to side to
00:17:36
Speaker 2: the music coming from the pink ukulele. Once he'd finished
00:17:43
Speaker 2: playing his latest song, Coco continued exploring the forest and
00:17:50
Speaker 2: listening out for the soothing sounds that came from every
00:17:56
Speaker 2: part of it. Whenever he heard new melody, he would
00:18:02
Speaker 2: play a matching tune on his ukulele. He listened carefully
00:18:08
Speaker 2: to the snuffling and shuffling of animals as they explored
00:18:14
Speaker 2: the undergrowth. Squirrels running up and down trees, Deer nuzzling
00:18:22
Speaker 2: through fruit bushes looking for something to eat. A whispering
00:18:28
Speaker 2: wind drifted through the trees and hedges of sleepy forest.
00:18:35
Speaker 2: To Coco's delight, he easily remembered every new song he created.
00:18:44
Speaker 2: All of Nature's enchanting orchestra was replicated perfectly by Coco
00:18:51
Speaker 2: and his ukulele. Each new note caused more peace and
00:18:58
Speaker 2: love to flow through the little Koala. His face was
00:19:04
Speaker 2: a picture of pure happiness as he strolled along, strumming
00:19:10
Speaker 2: his ukulele. Wherever he went, a small group of animals
00:19:17
Speaker 2: would gather and listen to his happy tune, and it
00:19:24
Speaker 2: wasn't long before the new audience would start to yawn
00:19:29
Speaker 2: and feel delightfully drowsy. Koko was having such a wonderful
00:19:37
Speaker 2: time that he didn't even notice the passing of the day.
00:19:44
Speaker 2: He only became aware of night approaching when the daytime
00:19:49
Speaker 2: sounds around him grew quieter and no new animals came
00:19:56
Speaker 2: forth to listen to his songs. The stillness caused ko
00:20:02
Speaker 2: Ko to stop playing his ukulele. Looking upwards, he noticed
00:20:09
Speaker 2: the sky had turned a darker shade of blue and
00:20:14
Speaker 2: a handful of twinkling stars had appeared. He was about
00:20:20
Speaker 2: to head home, but something stopped him. Different sounds were
00:20:27
Speaker 2: transported towards him on the balmy evening breeze. Daytime sounds
00:20:36
Speaker 2: were replaced with the sleepy tunes of twilight. Ko Ko
00:20:42
Speaker 2: heard deep hoots coming from an owl hidden within the
00:20:47
Speaker 2: boughs of a tree. The sweet serenade of a nightingale
00:20:54
Speaker 2: was borne on a breeze, and it wrapped around him.
00:20:59
Speaker 2: A gentle buzzing came from a company of cicaders who
00:21:05
Speaker 2: were nestled together in the night scented grass. The soft
00:21:11
Speaker 2: shuffling of a fox on a nighttime stroll could be
00:21:16
Speaker 2: heard faintly in the distance. Coco listened silently to the
00:21:23
Speaker 2: assortment of soft, soothing sounds that encircled him. Playing more softly,
00:21:33
Speaker 2: he began to pluck the strings of his ukulele until
00:21:38
Speaker 2: he coordinated it with the soft symphony of the evening.
00:21:45
Speaker 2: The soothing lullaby coming from Coco's ukulele ebbed and flowed
00:21:53
Speaker 2: through the forest like an undulating wave of magical music.
00:22:03
Speaker 2: As Coco played on, the sky turned darker and the
00:22:09
Speaker 2: moon peered out from behind the cloud. Moonbeams danced across
00:22:15
Speaker 2: the grass in time to the koala's song. Coco played
00:22:23
Speaker 2: for a little while longer before deciding it was time
00:22:28
Speaker 2: to head home. He walked back through the forest, gently
00:22:35
Speaker 2: playing the ukulele. Now that he learned how to play it,
00:22:42
Speaker 2: he found himself unable to stop. Playing. The pink ukulele
00:22:49
Speaker 2: was as natural to him as breathing onwards through sleepy forest.
00:22:58
Speaker 2: The koala went creating new tunes along the way, he
00:23:05
Speaker 2: passed by the home of a mother rabbit who was
00:23:09
Speaker 2: settling her babies down to sleep. Coco's RESTful lullaby floated
00:23:17
Speaker 2: on the air and down into the rabbit's home. The
00:23:22
Speaker 2: tune alighted on the bunny's ears as lightly as a
00:23:27
Speaker 2: feather and caused their eyes to gently close. Very soon
00:23:35
Speaker 2: they were fast asleep. The mother rabbit sighed happily and
00:23:42
Speaker 2: lay down next to her snoozing offspring. Thanks to Coco's song,
00:23:50
Speaker 2: she fell easily into a deep slumber. Coco walked past
00:23:59
Speaker 2: the hedgerow, where a farther hedgehog was tucking his little
00:24:03
Speaker 2: ones in for the night. Coco's melody drifted over the
00:24:09
Speaker 2: family and wrapped around the young ones like a comforting blanket.
00:24:17
Speaker 2: Tiny eyes slowly closed, and the hedgehogs snuggled further down
00:24:24
Speaker 2: into their leafy warm beds. The father hedgehog let out
00:24:31
Speaker 2: a blissful sigh and settled down to sleep too. Still
00:24:39
Speaker 2: playing his ukulele, Coco walked back over the old wooden bridge.
00:24:47
Speaker 2: His melting lullaby headed towards a couple of frogs who
00:24:53
Speaker 2: were sitting on a lily pad. They rested their heads
00:24:58
Speaker 2: together and smiled happily. Their look turned dreamy as they
00:25:05
Speaker 2: gazed at the full moon with love in their hearts.
00:25:11
Speaker 2: More and more animals of the forest heard Cocoa's dreamlike
00:25:16
Speaker 2: tune as it glided through trees, overfields, and across the
00:25:24
Speaker 2: grassy glades. Squirrels fell asleep tucked snugly in the branches
00:25:32
Speaker 2: of trees. Drowsy deer lay down in moonlit clearings and
00:25:40
Speaker 2: were transported into a peaceful sleep. Baby bears cuddled up
00:25:48
Speaker 2: to each other at the back of cozy caves and
00:25:53
Speaker 2: drifted into RESTful dreams. Tired moles returned to their underground
00:26:02
Speaker 2: homes and bade each other good night before falling asleep.
00:26:11
Speaker 2: Coco continued his journey home. The strumming of the ukulele
00:26:18
Speaker 2: matched the steady beat of his footsteps. Moonbeams shone brightly
00:26:26
Speaker 2: on the ground and helped the little koala on his
00:26:31
Speaker 2: homeward bound journey. After a while, Coco began to yawn
00:26:40
Speaker 2: and stopped playing the ukulele. He held it in one
00:26:46
Speaker 2: paw and swung it gently As he carried on walking.
00:26:52
Speaker 2: He softly hummed the songs he had collected that day.
00:26:59
Speaker 2: Soon Coco's home came into view. It was a welcome
00:27:06
Speaker 2: sight for the little Koala, who had grown steadily more
00:27:11
Speaker 2: tired on his walk. Grandpa was sitting on a wooden
00:27:18
Speaker 2: bench on the porch waiting for Coco. As his grandson
00:27:26
Speaker 2: climbed the steps. The elderly Koala gave Coco a knowing
00:27:31
Speaker 2: look and said, you found the song in your heart.
00:27:40
Speaker 2: Coco nodded happily and said he'd found lots of songs.
00:27:47
Speaker 2: Unable to help himself, he let out a big yawn
00:27:55
Speaker 2: and another one.
00:27:59
Speaker 1: And.
00:28:02
Speaker 2: Grandpa stood up and walked over to Cocoa. He gently
00:28:10
Speaker 2: took the pink ukulele from him. Then Grandpa Koala scooped
00:28:18
Speaker 2: his grandson up and carried him inside. Coco yawned again
00:28:26
Speaker 2: before resting his sleepy head against Grandpa's chest, his tired
00:28:34
Speaker 2: little eyes closed. Grandpa put Coco into his bed and
00:28:43
Speaker 2: tucked a woolen blanket snugly around him. He softly placed
00:28:51
Speaker 2: a kiss on his grandson's head. He settled himself in
00:28:56
Speaker 2: the chair her the side of cocoa bed and smiled
00:29:02
Speaker 2: lovingly at the little Koala. Even though Coco was already
00:29:10
Speaker 2: falling asleep. Grandpa Koala began to play a soothing lullaby
00:29:18
Speaker 2: on the pink ukulele. It was the first song he
00:29:23
Speaker 2: had learned to play when he was Cocoa's age. It
00:29:28
Speaker 2: was the song in his heart. As he softly strummed
00:29:35
Speaker 2: the pink ukulele, Grandpa Koala thought about the soft, soothing
00:29:43
Speaker 2: lullabies that drifted through sleepy forests every day. The melody
00:29:51
Speaker 2: of the meadow with buzzing bees flitting from flower to
00:29:57
Speaker 2: flower and birds chapping cheerfully from the tree tops, The
00:30:05
Speaker 2: rhythm of the flowing river as it babbled under the
00:30:10
Speaker 2: old wooden bridge before meandering through the flower scented meadow,
00:30:19
Speaker 2: and the twilight sounds of the night time animals. Grandpa smiled.
00:30:28
Speaker 2: He had never forgotten his first song. It would be
00:30:34
Speaker 2: in his heart forever. His lullaby came to an end,
00:30:42
Speaker 2: Grandpa put the pink ukulele next to Coco's bed and
00:30:48
Speaker 2: quietly stood up. He gently kissed the top of Coco's
00:30:54
Speaker 2: sleeping head one more time before leaving the room. As
00:31:03
Speaker 2: the rest of the Koala family settled down to sleep
00:31:07
Speaker 2: that night, the whispering wind continued to drift gently through
00:31:16
Speaker 2: the trees a sleepy forest
