Speaker 1: to have great folks like you find us and support us.
00:01:00

00:01:06
Speaker 1: sleep so sweet dreams wherever you are in the world.
00:01:10
Speaker 1: Now cast your minds back to episode eighteen, where we
00:01:14
Speaker 1: first met magician Maggie and her faithful assistant Marshmallow the
00:01:18
Speaker 1: White Rabbit, because we are reuniting with them for tonight's story.
00:01:23
Speaker 1: Maggie is about to show her good friend Thomas her
00:01:26
Speaker 1: newest piece of magic, her imaginarium. Though it might look
00:01:31
Speaker 1: like a bog standard tent from the outside inside it
00:01:35
Speaker 1: contains the whole universe and more. We're going to need
00:01:41
Speaker 1: to be super relaxed for this one, so jump into
00:01:44
Speaker 1: bed quickly and I'll get started on guiding you into
00:01:48
Speaker 1: the perfect state for listening and maybe sleeping. You can
00:01:54
Speaker 1: always listen to the end another time. Get comfy as
00:01:59
Speaker 1: I begin Maggie's Magical Imaginarium by Luke Prendergast. Settle down
00:02:13
Speaker 1: into your beds. Make sure you're extra cozy. Stretch your
00:02:20
Speaker 1: arms and your legs, and roll your shoulders until you
00:02:24
Speaker 1: feel all of the tension from the day floating away
00:02:28
Speaker 1: from your body. As you let this tension leave your body,
00:02:33
Speaker 1: let any thoughts you might be having float away too,
00:02:38
Speaker 1: until your mind is peaceful and empty. Good. Now, let's
00:02:45
Speaker 1: try our deep breaths together. Take a big, deep breath
00:02:50
Speaker 1: in and then slowly let it out again, a big
00:02:57
Speaker 1: breath in, slowly let it out, Breathe in, and once more,
00:03:09
Speaker 1: breathing and very good. Now, close your eyes and picture
00:03:18
Speaker 1: in your imagination your heart's greatest desire. It could be
00:03:24
Speaker 1: anything in the world, big or small. Hold it in
00:03:27
Speaker 1: your mind and let the feeling of happiness it brings
00:03:31
Speaker 1: wash over you and make you calm good. Today, we're
00:03:37
Speaker 1: visiting our old friend Maggie the Magician and her rabbit, Marshmallow.
00:03:42
Speaker 1: Maggie and Marshmallow have a wonderfully soothing journey that they
00:03:46
Speaker 1: want to take us on, so settling. Maggie might have
00:03:51
Speaker 1: been young, but with every passing week she was becoming
00:03:55
Speaker 1: one of the most popular magicians around. Everybody loved the
00:03:59
Speaker 1: show she put on with her best friend and assistant,
00:04:02
Speaker 1: Marshmallow of the Bright White Rabbit. Together, Maggie and Marshmallow
00:04:08
Speaker 1: went around town putting on magic shows at children's parties
00:04:11
Speaker 1: and summer fates, and their audiences always left feeling delightfully baffled.
00:04:17
Speaker 1: There was nothing Maggie enjoyed more than discovering different kinds
00:04:22
Speaker 1: of magic and learning brand new tricks so she could
00:04:25
Speaker 1: perform them at her shows. She could do card tricks,
00:04:29
Speaker 1: where she'd make the Queen of Hearts disappear and then
00:04:33
Speaker 1: reappear again inside someone's shirt pocket. She could make spoons
00:04:38
Speaker 1: bend and cups flip, and she could levitate two feet
00:04:43
Speaker 1: into the air, making her audience gasp. And she could
00:04:47
Speaker 1: have Marshmallow jump inside her magician's hat. And then, with
00:04:51
Speaker 1: a click of her fingers vanish. One day, Maggie's friend
00:04:56
Speaker 1: Thomas came over to visit her. Thomas and Maggie went
00:05:00
Speaker 1: to school together, and while Maggie had always wanted to
00:05:04
Speaker 1: be a magician, Thomas often dreamt about being an astronaut.
00:05:08
Speaker 1: There was nothing he'd like so much as to go
00:05:13
Speaker 1: into outer space and feel what it was like to
00:05:15
Speaker 1: be in zero gravity. Maggie's dad answered the door with
00:05:20
Speaker 1: a big smile on his face and told Thomas that
00:05:23
Speaker 1: Maggie was out in the garden. He said she had
00:05:26
Speaker 1: a big surprise waiting for him. Maggie met Thomas at
00:05:31
Speaker 1: the back door. Close your eyes, she said, I've got
00:05:36
Speaker 1: a surprise for you. It's an entirely new kind of magic,
00:05:43
Speaker 1: and I can't wait for you to see it. So
00:05:48
Speaker 1: Thomas closed his eyes and Maggie put her hands over
00:05:52
Speaker 1: them just to make sure he didn't peek. They stepped
00:05:56
Speaker 1: out of the door and carefully Maggie led him down
00:06:01
Speaker 1: the stone steps until finally he felt soft grass beneath
00:06:06
Speaker 1: his feet. Are you ready, Maggie whispered somewhere near to
00:06:12
Speaker 1: his ear. Thomas nodded, okay. Maggie said three two one.
00:06:23
Speaker 1: Maggie removed her hands and Thomas opened his eyes. He
00:06:28
Speaker 1: blinked twice in the bright sunlight. Then he had to
00:06:32
Speaker 1: admit he felt a little confused. He had been expecting
00:06:37
Speaker 1: something unimaginable, a magical creature like a dragon or a
00:06:42
Speaker 1: flying horse, but instead, all there was in Maggie's back
00:06:47
Speaker 1: garden was a little red tent. In front of the
00:06:51
Speaker 1: tent sat Marshmallow, wearing his black magician's jacket and twitching
00:06:56
Speaker 1: his nose mysteriously. Watch that, Thomas asked Maggie. The tent
00:07:04
Speaker 1: looked just like the one his dad took camping, except
00:07:09
Speaker 1: it had green bunting around the top of it and
00:07:12
Speaker 1: a flag on top with a white bunny rabbit looking
00:07:16
Speaker 1: just like Marshmallow. Maggie told him that this was the
00:07:22
Speaker 1: big surprise. He looked at it a little doubtfully. There
00:07:28
Speaker 1: didn't seem to be anything surprising about it to him.
00:07:33
Speaker 1: This tent, he asked, Oh, said Maggie, this is no tent,
00:07:41
Speaker 1: and she skipped across the garden to stand beside Marshmallow.
00:07:45
Speaker 1: Drum roll, please, my stroke, she asked her rabbit assistant.
00:07:51
Speaker 1: Marshmallow with a nod of his head, began to thump
00:07:54
Speaker 1: his hind feet on the floor, just like a drumstick
00:07:57
Speaker 1: being rattled against the skin of a drum. This, said
00:08:02
Speaker 1: Maggie with a flourish of her hands. This is my
00:08:07
Speaker 1: new magical imaginarium. Imaginarium, Thomas repeated under his breath, looking
00:08:16
Speaker 1: at the tent with a new sense of wonder. Suddenly,
00:08:20
Speaker 1: since that odd word had been spoken, the tent did
00:08:24
Speaker 1: seem to sparkle with a strange kind of magic, but
00:08:29
Speaker 1: he still didn't know what the word meant. What's an imaginarium,
00:08:35
Speaker 1: he asked Maggie. She said, an imaginarium is the most
00:08:43
Speaker 1: wonderful kind of magic I've discovered yet. This might look
00:08:48
Speaker 1: to you like a normal tent, but in fact, when
00:08:52
Speaker 1: you step inside, you are stepping into your own imagination,
00:08:58
Speaker 1: and the truth is you're a imagination is where the
00:09:02
Speaker 1: greatest kind of magic can happen. She smiled at Thomas,
00:09:07
Speaker 1: who was still looking a little bit lost. It's best
00:09:11
Speaker 1: to just try it out, Maggie said, do you want
00:09:14
Speaker 1: to have a goat? He certainly did, Yes, Please, he said.
00:09:21
Speaker 1: Maggie held open the door of the imaginarium and Marshmallow
00:09:25
Speaker 1: led the way, hopping inside Thomas followed, and Maggie came
00:09:30
Speaker 1: in behind him. Inside the imaginarium was pitch black. There
00:09:36
Speaker 1: was not a single glimmer of light breaking in from
00:09:39
Speaker 1: the outside. But the ground beneath his feet was soft
00:09:43
Speaker 1: and warm, and he immediately felt a peace settled into
00:09:47
Speaker 1: his body. When he went in, Maggie told him to
00:09:51
Speaker 1: lie down on the floor. Although he couldn't see them
00:09:54
Speaker 1: in the darkness at all, Thomas felt Maggie and Marshmallow
00:09:58
Speaker 1: lying down beside him too. Maggie said that in order
00:10:03
Speaker 1: to experience the full wonders of the imaginarium first they
00:10:08
Speaker 1: had to make sure they were utterly relaxed. Going into
00:10:13
Speaker 1: your imagination is a bit like going to sleep, she said.
00:10:19
Speaker 1: That's why we have such amazing dreams when we're sleeping.
00:10:25
Speaker 1: She told Thomas first to shake his arms and limbs
00:10:28
Speaker 1: to make his body soft and relaxed. Then she told
00:10:33
Speaker 1: him to close his eyes and take some deep breaths.
00:10:36
Speaker 1: Her deep breath in and out, her deep breath in
00:10:45
Speaker 1: and out, and one more in and out. After his
00:10:54
Speaker 1: deep breathing, Thomas felt very relaxed. Indeed, his whole body
00:10:59
Speaker 1: felt as light as a feather. Good, Maggie said, now
00:11:05
Speaker 1: very slowly, open your eyes. When Thomas opened his eyes,
00:11:12
Speaker 1: the imaginarium was no longer pitch black. Instead, the canopy
00:11:18
Speaker 1: of the tent had transformed into a dark night sky,
00:11:22
Speaker 1: with a flurry of bright stars twinkling all across it.
00:11:27
Speaker 1: In the distance, he could even see a thin crescent
00:11:30
Speaker 1: moon smiling like the cheshire cat's smile. The stars looked
00:11:37
Speaker 1: very far away. Thomas thought the imaginarium must be much
00:11:42
Speaker 1: larger on the inside than it had looked on the outside.
00:11:46
Speaker 1: As though she had been able to listen in on
00:11:48
Speaker 1: his thoughts, Maggie said, the imaginarium is as big as
00:11:54
Speaker 1: our imaginations. It's as big as the whole universe. Maggie
00:12:01
Speaker 1: explained that when you let your mind relax completely, your
00:12:06
Speaker 1: imagination opened up and filled up the entire imaginarium. Don't worry,
00:12:13
Speaker 1: she told Thomas, Marshmallow can show us how it's done. First,
00:12:19
Speaker 1: beside him, Thomas heard Marshmallow the rabbit take a deep breath.
00:12:24
Speaker 1: Then the night sky came towards them, and it seemed
00:12:29
Speaker 1: as if they were floating through outer space, with the
00:12:32
Speaker 1: bright stars floating past them and glittering as they went. Then,
00:12:38
Speaker 1: even though he was still lying down. It felt as
00:12:42
Speaker 1: though Thomas had drifted through the air and landed on
00:12:45
Speaker 1: his feet. The three of them found themselves in a
00:12:50
Speaker 1: large meadow of long grass dotted with many colored wildflowers.
00:12:57
Speaker 1: Thomas could even feel the grass rushing against his ankles,
00:13:02
Speaker 1: and he could smell the pollen in the air. The imaginarium,
00:13:08
Speaker 1: he thought, was a marvelous place. Marshmallow gave a few
00:13:13
Speaker 1: flicks of his ears, a twitch of his nose, and
00:13:17
Speaker 1: a single thump of a foot. He was speaking in
00:13:21
Speaker 1: the language of rabbits, but somehow in the imaginarium Thomas
00:13:26
Speaker 1: could understand him. Marshmallow was telling Thomas that this was
00:13:32
Speaker 1: where he had grown up. Together, the three of them
00:13:36
Speaker 1: wandered through the meadow of Marshmallow's imagination. They passed fat
00:13:41
Speaker 1: bumblebees drifting lazily from buttercup to buttercup. They passed an
00:13:47
Speaker 1: old oak tree with wrinkled bark and a kind smile,
00:13:51
Speaker 1: who whispered a creaky hello to them as they went by.
00:13:55
Speaker 1: They passed a dormouse in a purple petticoat, who told
00:13:59
Speaker 1: them she was off to meet her friends for tea.
00:14:03
Speaker 1: At last, they came to a series of three holes
00:14:07
Speaker 1: that had been burrowed into the soil. Peering into them,
00:14:12
Speaker 1: it looked to Thomas like they were tunnels leading somewhere
00:14:16
Speaker 1: far underground. Marshmallow thumped his foot three times on the ground. This,
00:14:25
Speaker 1: he said, in his rabbit language, is where I grew up.
00:14:30
Speaker 1: The Marthmallow family Warren. Come on in. Thomas and Maggie
00:14:36
Speaker 1: followed Marshmallow down into the underground tunnels, where it smelled
00:14:41
Speaker 1: cool and damp and sweet. Down, Down, down they went.
00:14:47
Speaker 1: The warren was an underground labyrinth, with many channels shooting
00:14:52
Speaker 1: off from the main one and meeting again further down.
00:14:56
Speaker 1: But Thomas wasn't worried. Marshmallow seemed to know exactly where
00:15:01
Speaker 1: he was going. They emerged from a dark tunnel into
00:15:06
Speaker 1: a large round room that had been dug out of
00:15:09
Speaker 1: the ground. Maggie let out a whistle of wonder through
00:15:14
Speaker 1: her teeth. She had never known that Marshmallow had grown
00:15:18
Speaker 1: up somewhere so wonderful and cozy. In the middle of
00:15:23
Speaker 1: the room stood a small table and chairs with embroidered
00:15:27
Speaker 1: cushions and a soft rug on the floor. Across the
00:15:31
Speaker 1: walls were framed pictures of lots of rabbits who must
00:15:35
Speaker 1: have been Marshmallow's family and friends, and in the corner
00:15:40
Speaker 1: a white rabbit stood at a stove stirring a big
00:15:44
Speaker 1: copper pot. The delicious scent of hot stew was wafting
00:15:50
Speaker 1: over to them, and above the stove hung many bunches
00:15:54
Speaker 1: of herbs. This is my mum, Marshmallow told his friends,
00:16:01
Speaker 1: and introduced them to her. She said hello to Maggie
00:16:04
Speaker 1: and Thomas and told them they were very welcome in
00:16:07
Speaker 1: her home. What are you cooking, Thomas asked her, It
00:16:13
Speaker 1: smells very tasty. She told them that she was cooking
00:16:18
Speaker 1: a stew with all of the vegetables that she had
00:16:21
Speaker 1: grown in her own vegetable garden above the ground, cabbage
00:16:26
Speaker 1: and turnips, and of course carrots, which were all rabbits
00:16:31
Speaker 1: absolutely favorite food. Missus Marshmallow wrinkled her nose. The only
00:16:37
Speaker 1: problem is, she said, I've forgotten one ingredient. Thomas put
00:16:44
Speaker 1: his face over the pot to inhale the rich smell
00:16:47
Speaker 1: that was coming off the stew in spirals of steam. Then,
00:16:52
Speaker 1: quite out of nowhere, he knew what it was missing.
00:16:56
Speaker 1: Thomas reached out above the stove and plucked down some
00:17:01
Speaker 1: sage from where it was hanging and dropped it into
00:17:04
Speaker 1: the cooking pot. The stew gurgled as though happy for
00:17:08
Speaker 1: the added herb. Missus Marshmallow dipped her big wooden spoon
00:17:13
Speaker 1: into the stew and took a sip, then licking her
00:17:18
Speaker 1: lips with a tiny pink tongue. She smiled gladly at Thomas.
00:17:24
Speaker 1: That's just the trick, she said, thank you. Thomas told
00:17:30
Speaker 1: her that he didn't quite understand how he'd known what
00:17:33
Speaker 1: the missing ingredient was. It just came to him like magic. Well,
00:17:40
Speaker 1: Maggie told him with a little wink, that's the power
00:17:44
Speaker 1: of the imagination. They said their goodbye is to missus Marshmallow,
00:17:49
Speaker 1: and Marshmallow gave his mum a big bunny hug. Then
00:17:53
Speaker 1: they left the way they'd come, walking up through the
00:17:56
Speaker 1: network of Warren's. When they stepped out into the sunny meadow,
00:18:01
Speaker 1: Maggie turned to Thomas, So you've seen how the imaginarium
00:18:07
Speaker 1: works for Marshmallow. Now here's your turn. Are you ready?
00:18:14
Speaker 1: Thomas told her he was ready, but he still didn't
00:18:17
Speaker 1: really understand how it worked. Don't worry about that, Maggie
00:18:22
Speaker 1: told him, you'll get the hang of it as you go.
00:18:26
Speaker 1: So they all lay down on the soft grass, looking
00:18:29
Speaker 1: up into the beautiful blue sky, very slowly, so slowly
00:18:35
Speaker 1: that he couldn't quite tell when the light stopped and
00:18:38
Speaker 1: the darkness started again. The blue sky faded into the
00:18:43
Speaker 1: black night of the imaginarium, with all its little stars
00:18:48
Speaker 1: twinkling away again. Okay, Thomas said, Maggie, Off you go.
00:18:57
Speaker 1: The most important thing is to let your imagination expand.
00:19:03
Speaker 1: Close your eyes and feel your mind float up and
00:19:08
Speaker 1: out and extend over the entire world. Let's help Thomas
00:19:17
Speaker 1: with this. With our eyes closed, let's make our own
00:19:21
Speaker 1: minds expand. Let your mind travel down the length of
00:19:26
Speaker 1: your arms until it reaches the tips of your fingers. Now,
00:19:33
Speaker 1: let your mind slip out of your body and travel
00:19:36
Speaker 1: out of the room. Let your mind, as free as
00:19:41
Speaker 1: a bird, flow out of the window and out into
00:19:46
Speaker 1: the world beyond. Feel your mind expanding, and feel the
00:19:52
Speaker 1: peaceful sensations that come with that. Very good You can
00:20:01
Speaker 1: open your eyes now, Thomas, Maggie whispered. Thomas opened his
00:20:06
Speaker 1: eyes and was quite amazed by what he found. He,
00:20:11
Speaker 1: Maggie and Marshmallow were inside a spaceship. There was a
00:20:16
Speaker 1: cockpit with two seats and lots of colorful buttons and levers,
00:20:22
Speaker 1: and a map of the Solar system on the wall.
00:20:26
Speaker 1: Maggie and Marshmallow were both wearing shiny silver spacesuits and
00:20:31
Speaker 1: space helmets with glass rises. When he looked down, Thomas
00:20:38
Speaker 1: found that he was wearing one too. Where are we,
00:20:43
Speaker 1: he asked, full of wonder. Maggie told him that they
00:20:48
Speaker 1: had traveled into his imagination. Then she pointed at the
00:20:52
Speaker 1: little circular window and told him to look outside. Thomas
00:20:58
Speaker 1: took a step towards towards the window and found instead
00:21:02
Speaker 1: that his whole body lifted up and floated through the air.
00:21:06
Speaker 1: There was no gravity here. The feeling of weightlessness in
00:21:11
Speaker 1: his body made him feel happy and free. As he
00:21:16
Speaker 1: soared across the cabin and landed by the window, he
00:21:22
Speaker 1: looked outside and he saw below him, like a big
00:21:26
Speaker 1: bubble of green land and blue sea, the whole earth.
00:21:33
Speaker 1: Up above, he saw the silver Moon with its craters
00:21:37
Speaker 1: and oceans. Wow, Thomas whispered, He had always dreamed of
00:21:44
Speaker 1: going to space, and now he was actually here. Maggie
00:21:50
Speaker 1: put a hand on his shoulder as if she could
00:21:53
Speaker 1: hear his thought. Once again, she said, isn't it magical?
00:21:58
Speaker 1: Hugh brought us here. This is all the power of
00:22:03
Speaker 1: your imagination. She turned towards the cockpit and pointed at
00:22:09
Speaker 1: the buttons and levers. Now you're our astronaut. You're going
00:22:16
Speaker 1: to have to drive this thing. Thomas had never driven
00:22:21
Speaker 1: a spaceship in his life, but by now he understood
00:22:26
Speaker 1: that when you weren't sure about something, you should trust
00:22:29
Speaker 1: the power of your imagination. Thomas sat down at the
00:22:34
Speaker 1: controls and let his mind soften and relax. As he
00:22:40
Speaker 1: did this, he suddenly knew what he was doing. Off
00:22:45
Speaker 1: we go, he said, and press some buttons in a
00:22:49
Speaker 1: perfect order, as gently as a ship moving through a
00:22:54
Speaker 1: calm sea. The spaceship began to sail through space. Out
00:23:01
Speaker 1: of the window, they watched as all the planets went
00:23:04
Speaker 1: past Mars and Saturn and Jupiter. Then they left our
00:23:11
Speaker 1: Solar system and passed all kinds of planets that no
00:23:14
Speaker 1: one had ever imagined before. Comets with trails of glitter
00:23:19
Speaker 1: sword past the window. Meteorites and asteroids tumbled through space.
00:23:27
Speaker 1: They saw another spaceship with a large green antenna. In
00:23:32
Speaker 1: the window of the spaceship, they saw a figure waving.
00:23:37
Speaker 1: They all waved back at their new alien friend. Soon enough,
00:23:42
Speaker 1: Thomas gave a big yawn. Then Maggie yawned and Marshmallow too.
00:23:49
Speaker 1: Yawns can be infectious like that. It's been a long
00:23:54
Speaker 1: day traveling around the imaginarium. Maggie said, no, one, we're tired.
00:24:02
Speaker 1: Using your mind like that can be hard work. Let's
00:24:07
Speaker 1: settle down and have a nap in outer space. Thomas
00:24:12
Speaker 1: and Marshmallow couldn't agree with Maggie Moore. They settled down
00:24:17
Speaker 1: in their spacesuits on the cabin floor, huddling close together
00:24:22
Speaker 1: like the best of friends. As he felt his eyes
00:24:27
Speaker 1: begin to get heavy and his body going soft, Thomas
00:24:33
Speaker 1: felt very grateful to Maggie that she had shown him
00:24:37
Speaker 1: her new magical imaginarium. It really was much more than
00:24:43
Speaker 1: a tent. He remembered how the stars had been picked
00:24:48
Speaker 1: out across the imaginarium sky. He remembered the walk through
00:24:55
Speaker 1: the meadow of Marshmallow's imagination, and he remembered how they'd
00:25:02
Speaker 1: seen Marshmallow's childhood home and met his mom. He remembered
00:25:09
Speaker 1: the smell of the cooking and how the sage had
00:25:13
Speaker 1: sizzled as he dropped it in the pot. But most
00:25:17
Speaker 1: of all, he remembered the feeling of lightness as he
00:25:22
Speaker 1: had floated through the air in zero gravity. That was
00:25:28
Speaker 1: a feeling he would never forget, and so Thomas, Maggie,
00:25:35
Speaker 1: and Marshmallow slowly fell asleep on the spaceship floor, which
00:25:41
Speaker 1: was also the floor of the imaginarium. The mind really
00:25:46
Speaker 1: is the most magical thing, Thomas thought, as his eyes closed.
00:25:52
Speaker 1: There is nothing he cannot do, and they all fell
00:25:57
Speaker 1: asleep beneath the spaceship window as the stars floated gently
