Speaker 1: Hey Abby, here you can listen to this episode in full.

00:00:21
Speaker 1: the supercast link in the show notes. Anyway, here's a
00:00:25
Speaker 1: preview of this very special episode. Brickles, the Headshog, is
00:00:36
Speaker 1: in his bedroom packing things into his backpack. He's already
00:00:40
Speaker 1: added three sets of very warm socks, and thinking about
00:00:43
Speaker 1: it now he adds a fourth, plus an extra hat
00:00:48
Speaker 1: and two more scarves. Prickles isn't sure, but he suspects
00:00:53
Speaker 1: that caves can get very cold indeed, and he isn't
00:00:58
Speaker 1: taking any chances. It may be the height of summer
00:01:02
Speaker 1: here in sleepy forests, with warm sunny days spent curling
00:01:07
Speaker 1: up into a ball and rolling down the grassy slopes
00:01:11
Speaker 1: racing his friends to the bottom. But where he's going
00:01:14
Speaker 1: it is winter. Everything in life is balanced out, you see,
00:01:19
Speaker 1: and that means when it's warm and sunny in the
00:01:22
Speaker 1: top half of the world, the bottom half is much
00:01:26
Speaker 1: much colder, and when summer arrives in the bottom half
00:01:30
Speaker 1: the world, and the sunshine shifts down there for a while.
00:01:33
Speaker 1: The top half gets a lot colder instead, and Prickles
00:01:38
Speaker 1: is going to the other side of the world, all
00:01:40
Speaker 1: the way around and all the way down, and it'll
00:01:44
Speaker 1: be no more shorts and t shirts for him. It'll
00:01:48
Speaker 1: be thick jumpers and Wellington boots and warming his paws
00:01:53
Speaker 1: by the fireside. Prickles Is dad is a firm believer
00:01:58
Speaker 1: in the motto there's no such thing as bad weather,
00:02:03
Speaker 1: only bad clothing. And Prickles was brought up hearing this
00:02:07
Speaker 1: line on every single rainy day, and every single time
00:02:11
Speaker 1: he complained that, oh, it was too hot, much much
00:02:16
Speaker 1: too hot. Over time, he's learnt that his dad is
00:02:21
Speaker 1: probably right. On this last evening before he disappears, he
00:02:26
Speaker 1: sits in the garden, leaning back into his red and
00:02:30
Speaker 1: white striped deck chair and toasting a marshmallow on a fire.
00:02:34
Speaker 1: The gooey white blob stark on to the end of
00:02:37
Speaker 1: a very long stick. It's a wonderfully warm evening, though,
00:02:42
Speaker 1: and the fire is more because it looks pretty than
00:02:45
Speaker 1: because it's needed. So every now and then he trundles
00:02:49
Speaker 1: inside and reaches into the freezer for an ice cube.
00:02:53
Speaker 1: His mum has made some special ice cubes, each with
00:02:57
Speaker 1: a whole cherry frozen inside, and when the ice is
00:03:01
Speaker 1: quite melted away in his mouth, he gets this extra
00:03:04
Speaker 1: special frozen sweetness rolling around his tongue. Melted marshmallows and
00:03:11
Speaker 1: frozen cherries. Prickles is in heaven. What do they eat
00:03:18
Speaker 1: in New Zealand? He suddenly asks his dad, worried that
00:03:23
Speaker 1: it'll be something terribly different and he won't like it
00:03:26
Speaker 1: at all. You'll be just fine, his dad reassures him.
00:03:32
Speaker 1: They take a quick look on the internet and Prickles
00:03:35
Speaker 1: sees it all seems quite familiar to him. Prickles likes
00:03:40
Speaker 1: excitement in his life, but not on his plate. His
00:03:44
Speaker 1: plate is a place of safety in the beginning, middle
00:03:48
Speaker 1: and end of each day, something that he can look
00:03:51
Speaker 1: forward to because it's familiar. He hears friends talking about
00:03:56
Speaker 1: spices and exotic dishes, and he's the delicious smells that
00:04:01
Speaker 1: come from their lunch boxes in school. But Prickles is
00:04:05
Speaker 1: perfectly happy with his cheese sandwiches with a tomato. If
00:04:10
Speaker 1: he's feeling adventurous. He finds it hard to sleep that night,
00:04:15
Speaker 1: knowing there are so many firsts. The next day, the
00:04:19
Speaker 1: first time he goes on a school trip, the first
00:04:23
Speaker 1: time he'll fly with Albatross Airways, the first time he'll
00:04:28
Speaker 1: leave the Northern Hemisphere and go all the way to
00:04:31
Speaker 1: the Southern one instead. The first time he'll spend a
00:04:36
Speaker 1: day many days without either his mum or his dad
00:04:40
Speaker 1: by his side, but he knows he'll also have many bests,
00:04:46
Speaker 1: many laughs, and wows and woes. His mom has given
00:04:52
Speaker 1: him a sealed envelope for each day of the trip
00:04:55
Speaker 1: while he's away, numbered from one to six, and he's
00:04:59
Speaker 1: going to open them in order. She's also given him
00:05:04
Speaker 1: six of his favorite chocolate bars, one for each day,
00:05:08
Speaker 1: so he can have a little bit of home with him.
