Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Kuala Moon, a podcast of

00:00:14

Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime

00:00:20

Speaker 1: a dream. Get comfortable and quiet in your bed. Perhaps

00:00:25

Speaker 1: take some nice deep breaths and gently close your eyes.

00:00:30

Speaker 1: I'm going to introduce you to a family who are

00:00:33

Speaker 1: on a mission to get to the bottom of an

00:00:35

Speaker 1: intriguing mystery. Socks have been disappearing from their washing line,

00:00:41

Speaker 1: and the family are determined to find out where they

00:00:43

Speaker 1: have all gone. Let's hear what happens when the family

00:00:47

Speaker 1: investigate the mysterious puzzle of the missing socks. This is

00:00:54

Speaker 1: Snaffles and the Great Sockheist by Jillian Rogerson. It was

00:01:07

Speaker 1: the start of the school summer holidays. Mina and her

00:01:11

Speaker 1: little brother Kamal were lying in the garden and gazing

00:01:14

Speaker 1: at the sky through the branches of a tree. Their

00:01:18

Speaker 1: mother was busy chatting to missus Fuddle over the garden fence.

00:01:23

Speaker 1: Mina smiled dreamily as she thought about the summer days

00:01:27

Speaker 1: that lay ahead. They can never end in quilt of adventure.

00:01:33

Speaker 1: Because she was the oldest, Mina decided to take charge

00:01:37

Speaker 1: of the holiday activities, and she shared her ideas with

00:01:40

Speaker 1: Kamal to see what he thought. He liked all of

00:01:44

Speaker 1: her ideas, especially the ones involving trips to the seaside

00:01:48

Speaker 1: and the local park. His eyes sparkled with delight, and

00:01:53

Speaker 1: he said, don't forget about the ice cream. We should

00:01:57

Speaker 1: have lots and lots and lots of ice cream. He

00:02:04

Speaker 1: began to count his favorite flavors on his little fingers.

00:02:08

Speaker 1: Mina smiled at her brother. He did so love ice cream.

00:02:14

Speaker 1: She laced her hands behind her head and thought about

00:02:18

Speaker 1: the book she'd finished reading the previous day. He had

00:02:22

Speaker 1: been a mystery story, and she had very much enjoyed

00:02:25

Speaker 1: finding out how the mystery had been solved. Mina loved

00:02:29

Speaker 1: mystery stories almost as much as her brother loved ice cream.

00:02:34

Speaker 1: Thinking about her book gave her a wonderful idea. She

00:02:39

Speaker 1: sat up and said to Kamal, we should solve a mystery.

00:02:45

Speaker 1: Kamal didn't know what a mystery was, so Mina did

00:02:48

Speaker 1: her best to explain it to him. As he listened,

00:02:52

Speaker 1: Kamal scrunched up his nose and Mina could tell he

00:02:56

Speaker 1: still didn't understand. Mina tried to think of an easier

00:03:00

Speaker 1: way to explain it, but at that very moment, she

00:03:04

Speaker 1: overheard an interesting conversation taking place between her mother and

00:03:10

Speaker 1: missus Fuddle. It's a mystery, her mother said, her hands

00:03:16

Speaker 1: resting lightly on the garden fence. A complete mystery. I

00:03:23

Speaker 1: just don't know where they go. When it's been happening

00:03:27

Speaker 1: for weeks. Missus Fuddle said, Oh, it's funny you should

00:03:32

Speaker 1: mention it because it's been happening to me also, and

00:03:37

Speaker 1: some of our neighbors have talked about it too. How

00:03:40

Speaker 1: very peculiar. You are right, it is a mystery. Mina

00:03:46

Speaker 1: jumped to her feet and held her hand out to Kama.

00:03:50

Speaker 1: She told him their mother was talking about a mystery

00:03:54

Speaker 1: and she wanted to find out what was going on.

00:03:58

Speaker 1: Kamal took his sister's hand and ran with her over

00:04:01

Speaker 1: to their mother. The children stood politely at their mother's

00:04:06

Speaker 1: side and waited for her to finish talking to missus Fudder.

00:04:11

Speaker 1: When she came to the end of her sentence, their

00:04:14

Speaker 1: mother looked down at her children and smiled. She asked

00:04:18

Speaker 1: how they were doing and if they were having a

00:04:20

Speaker 1: lovely time in the sunshine. Mina and Kamal nodded and

00:04:25

Speaker 1: smiled up at her. Mina said she'd heard her mum

00:04:29

Speaker 1: talking about a mystery and wondered what the mystery was.

00:04:33

Speaker 1: Her mother chuckled and pointed to the laundry drying on

00:04:37

Speaker 1: the washing line. She explained that socks had been going

00:04:41

Speaker 1: missing from the line over the last few weeks. There

00:04:45

Speaker 1: was only one sock that went missing each time, never

00:04:49

Speaker 1: a pair of socks. At first, she had thought the

00:04:53

Speaker 1: missing sock had been left in the washing machine or

00:04:56

Speaker 1: in the laundry basket, but after checking them places, she

00:05:01

Speaker 1: didn't find any odd socks there. She had even checked

00:05:06

Speaker 1: everyone's bedrooms in case there was a lost sock hiding

00:05:09

Speaker 1: underneath their beds, but again there wasn't and she was

00:05:14

Speaker 1: convinced that the socks had indeed disappeared from the washing

00:05:19

Speaker 1: line somehow, and it always happened when she was inside

00:05:24

Speaker 1: the house. Mina tapped her chin and said, hmm, interesting.

00:05:32

Speaker 1: Caamal tapped his chin too and said, yes, interesting, missus.

00:05:40

Speaker 1: Fuddle joined in the conversation. The same thing has been

00:05:44

Speaker 1: happening to me, and it's been going on for a

00:05:46

Speaker 1: few weeks too. I didn't say anything to your mum

00:05:50

Speaker 1: because I thought the socks would turn up somewhere, but

00:05:54

Speaker 1: they haven't. She frowned. It's always a sock that goes

00:05:59

Speaker 1: missing from my line too, never anything else, just a sock.

00:06:05

Speaker 1: I don't know if the socks are blowing away in

00:06:07

Speaker 1: the wind or if someone is taking them when I'm

00:06:10

Speaker 1: in the house. But why would someone take one sock?

00:06:16

Speaker 1: It's a mystery, Mina said, A complete mystery it is.

00:06:25

Speaker 1: Her mother agreed, A mystery I'd love to solve. Perhaps

00:06:31

Speaker 1: I should investigate it like one of those detectives in

00:06:35

Speaker 1: your books, Mina. Mina clapped her hands excitedly. Yes, you

00:06:42

Speaker 1: should do that. Can we help you? Can we solve

00:06:47

Speaker 1: this mystery together? Her mother smiled and said that was

00:06:52

Speaker 1: a wonderful idea, and together they would solve the Great

00:06:58

Speaker 1: sock heist. Kamal asked what a heist was, and his

00:07:04

Speaker 1: mother explained it was when something went missing, sometimes in

00:07:08

Speaker 1: a mysterious way. She asked missus Fuddle if she would

00:07:13

Speaker 1: like to join their team of detectives. I wish I could,

00:07:19

Speaker 1: their neighbor replied, but I've got a million things to

00:07:23

Speaker 1: do to day. Let me know how you get on.

00:07:27

Speaker 1: She waved good bye and went into her house. Mina

00:07:32

Speaker 1: asked her mum what they should do first. Her mom

00:07:36

Speaker 1: tapped her chin. As she thought about the best way

00:07:39

Speaker 1: to start their investigation, she said, if someone has taken

00:07:45

Speaker 1: the socks, we should start with a list of suspects.

00:07:51

Speaker 1: Seeing the confused look on her son's face, she explained

00:07:56

Speaker 1: a suspect was someone who might have taken the item.

00:08:01

Speaker 1: The family fell silent as they pondered possible suspects. They

00:08:07

Speaker 1: soon realized they didn't have any. Mina said, I know

00:08:13

Speaker 1: what we need to do. She dashed into the house

00:08:17

Speaker 1: and returned with a notepad and pencil. She opened up

00:08:21

Speaker 1: the notepad and said, we should make a list of

00:08:25

Speaker 1: our questions about the mystery and then work out how

00:08:29

Speaker 1: to answer each one. When we have all the answers,

00:08:34

Speaker 1: then we'll be able to solve the mystery simple. The

00:08:40

Speaker 1: family came up with a list of questions and Mina

00:08:43

Speaker 1: wrote them all down. Did the socks fly off the

00:08:48

Speaker 1: line in the wind? If so, are they somewhere in

00:08:52

Speaker 1: the garden? Did the socks go missing at the same

00:08:57

Speaker 1: time every day? If someone has taken the socks, why

00:09:03

Speaker 1: would they do that? And do they have a favorite

00:09:07

Speaker 1: color of sock? The last question was Kamal's. When Mina

00:09:13

Speaker 1: wrote it down, he felt very proud to be an

00:09:16

Speaker 1: important member of the detective family. Mina looked at the

00:09:21

Speaker 1: questions and said, if the socks were taken by a

00:09:26

Speaker 1: person or an animal, perhaps they have very cold feet

00:09:32

Speaker 1: and they need to keep them warm. I don't want

00:09:35

Speaker 1: any one to have cold feet. If we find out

00:09:40

Speaker 1: who is taking the socks, can we let them keep them? Mum,

00:09:45

Speaker 1: I've got plenty of socks. They can even have some

00:09:48

Speaker 1: more if they like. Kamal said they could have all

00:09:53

Speaker 1: of his socks because he didn't even like wearing them.

00:09:57

Speaker 1: He wriggled his bare toes and sied his sandals and grinned.

00:10:03

Speaker 1: Mina's mum gave her children a fond look and said

00:10:07

Speaker 1: if they did find out someone was taking the socks

00:10:11

Speaker 1: because they had cold feet, she would give them hers too,

00:10:16

Speaker 1: and she would also knit some special ones for them.

00:10:21

Speaker 1: She loved knitting socks and had a huge stash of

00:10:25

Speaker 1: wool just waiting to be made into rainbow colored socks.

00:10:30

Speaker 1: Mina suggested the family hide in the kitchen and peep

00:10:34

Speaker 1: through the window to see if anyone came in for

00:10:37

Speaker 1: the socks. Great idea. Her mum said, there are plenty

00:10:43

Speaker 1: of socks already on the line. Let's go inside and

00:10:48

Speaker 1: see what happens. The family went into the kitchen and

00:10:55

Speaker 1: peeped through one of the windows. They waited and waited.

00:11:02

Speaker 1: After a while, Kamal started to fidget. He had to

00:11:06

Speaker 1: use the bathroom. Mina did too, and so did their mother.

00:11:12

Speaker 1: The family took it in turns to use the bathroom.

00:11:16

Speaker 1: They returned to the kitchen and looked through the window.

00:11:20

Speaker 1: A sock was missing. It's one o mine, Kamal said, happily.

00:11:28

Speaker 1: I'm glad they've taken one of mine. I hope they

00:11:31

Speaker 1: come back for the other one. Mina asked her ma'am

00:11:35

Speaker 1: if they should try hiding again. Ma'am had a bit

00:11:39

Speaker 1: of a cheeky smile on her face. She said, I

00:11:43

Speaker 1: am interested to see who's taking our socks, but let's

00:11:48

Speaker 1: see if they like all of our socks. I haven't

00:11:53

Speaker 1: tried this before. I'm going to put a pair of

00:11:56

Speaker 1: your dad's unwashed socks on the line and see if

00:12:00

Speaker 1: they get taken. At the thought of their dad's unwashed socks,

00:12:07

Speaker 1: Mina and Kamale pulled a face and then laughed at

00:12:11

Speaker 1: each other. Their mother left the room and went in

00:12:15

Speaker 1: search of their father's socks. When she came into the kitchen.

00:12:20

Speaker 1: She was holding them at arm's length and trying not

00:12:22

Speaker 1: to breathe in the strong smell. She went outside and

00:12:27

Speaker 1: quickly put them on the line. She returned to the

00:12:31

Speaker 1: children whilst they waited to see what would happen. They

00:12:36

Speaker 1: sat on the sofa in the living room and their

00:12:39

Speaker 1: mother told them a story about a princess called Samaira

00:12:43

Speaker 1: who found a magical silver scarf inside a secret cave.

00:12:49

Speaker 1: The children instinctively snuggled closer to their mother, and she

00:12:54

Speaker 1: wrapped her arms around them. She spoke in a soft,

00:13:00

Speaker 1: soothing voice. Little Kamar fell asleep. Mina soon followed. Their

00:13:08

Speaker 1: mother stopped talking and closed her eyes. The family had

00:13:14

Speaker 1: a peaceful nap and woke up at the same time.

00:13:19

Speaker 1: They went into the kitchen and looked at the washing line.

00:13:24

Speaker 1: They were astonished to see that both of their father's

00:13:29

Speaker 1: socks had gone. The children's mother started laughing and said

00:13:35

Speaker 1: that was the first time two socks had been taken,

00:13:39

Speaker 1: and she would remember to tell their father, as she

00:13:42

Speaker 1: was sure he would feel very special. Indeed, Mina appeared

00:13:49

Speaker 1: closer through the window and said there was a piece

00:13:52

Speaker 1: of paper on the line where the socks had been

00:13:56

Speaker 1: They went outside and looked at the paper. It had

00:14:00

Speaker 1: words on it. Mum read it out, dear family, thank

00:14:08

Speaker 1: you very much for all the socks. It's very kind

00:14:12

Speaker 1: of you to give me such a wonderful gift. I

00:14:17

Speaker 1: hope you don't mind, but I took two this time

00:14:20

Speaker 1: because they smelled so lovely. Kind regards Snaffles. Her heart

00:14:28

Speaker 1: had been drawn beneath the words, along with a picture

00:14:32

Speaker 1: of a smiling animal that looked like a cute, fluffy dog,

00:14:37

Speaker 1: but who were standing on two feet. Gamal said Snaffles

00:14:41

Speaker 1: looked very kind. Mina's mum smiled softly and agreed. She

00:14:48

Speaker 1: said it was a lovely note, but she didn't know

00:14:52

Speaker 1: why Snaffles thought the socks were a gift. Perhaps they

00:14:57

Speaker 1: should try to meet Snaffles and it explain they weren't

00:15:01

Speaker 1: a gift. But Snaffles can keep your dad's socks. I

00:15:05

Speaker 1: don't want them back, she added. Mina had an idea.

00:15:12

Speaker 1: We need a trail to follow, something that will lead

00:15:17

Speaker 1: us to Snaffles, and I know what to use. She

00:15:24

Speaker 1: needed her mum's permission for the first part of her plan.

00:15:28

Speaker 1: When her mum heard what her plan was, she readily agreed.

00:15:34

Speaker 1: Mina went into the house and came back out with

00:15:37

Speaker 1: a pair of bright red socks. She gave them to

00:15:41

Speaker 1: her mom, who carefully unpicked the end row of wool

00:15:46

Speaker 1: from each sock and then tied it to the line.

00:15:52

Speaker 1: Mina explained to her brother that when Snaffles took a

00:15:56

Speaker 1: sock off the line, the end bit of wool would

00:15:59

Speaker 1: stay tied to the line and the rest would unravel,

00:16:05

Speaker 1: trail along the ground and lead them to Snaffles. Hopefully

00:16:11

Speaker 1: their plan would work. At that very moment, the cheerful

00:16:16

Speaker 1: sound of the ice cream van filled the air. The

00:16:20

Speaker 1: children's mother knew that the great sock heist would have

00:16:24

Speaker 1: to wait. The children would want an ice cream, and

00:16:28

Speaker 1: she was going to have one too. The family left

00:16:32

Speaker 1: the garden and joined the queue outside the ice cream van.

00:16:37

Speaker 1: They returned to the garden with huge swells of strawberry

00:16:41

Speaker 1: and chocolate ice cream towering on top of cornets. Each

00:16:46

Speaker 1: ice cream was covered in sparkling sprinkles. One of the

00:16:52

Speaker 1: red socks had been taken from the line, but the

00:16:55

Speaker 1: family were too absorbed in their delicious treats to notice.

00:17:01

Speaker 1: When they did finally notice the missing sock, little Kamal

00:17:06

Speaker 1: pointed excitedly at the line and said, look, Meana, your

00:17:11

Speaker 1: plan worked. There's a line of wool on the ground

00:17:16

Speaker 1: to follow, he cheered loudly. The family left the garden

00:17:23

Speaker 1: and began to follow the trail of wool. The red

00:17:27

Speaker 1: wall led them through the field behind their house and

00:17:32

Speaker 1: into a small woodland area. The wall ended in front

00:17:37

Speaker 1: of a large tree that had a door carved into it.

00:17:42

Speaker 1: The family were familiar with the woodland area and had

00:17:46

Speaker 1: never noticed the peculiar tree before one word had been

00:17:52

Speaker 1: etched into the door, Snaffles. The children's mother, tapped lightly

00:18:00

Speaker 1: on the door. The door opened, and Snaffles stood there.

00:18:06

Speaker 1: He looked a bit like an adorable dog and a

00:18:10

Speaker 1: bit like a fluffy cushion. He wasn't much bigger than camal.

00:18:16

Speaker 1: His fur, which was the color of golden straw, ruffled

00:18:20

Speaker 1: gently in the wind, and huge brown eyes gazed kindly

00:18:27

Speaker 1: at the family. Snaffles smiled and said hello. Looking into

00:18:34

Speaker 1: his kind eyes made Mina in her family feel all

00:18:38

Speaker 1: warm and fuzzy inside. They had never seen such a

00:18:44

Speaker 1: captivating creature before, and their hearts melted. Mina thought he

00:18:50

Speaker 1: looked like a smiling, fluffy cloud on legs. Mina smiled

00:18:56

Speaker 1: and held up the end of the wool. She said, hallo,

00:19:01

Speaker 1: sorry to disturb you, but did you take a sock

00:19:05

Speaker 1: from our garden? And are you Snaffles? Snaffles chuckled his

00:19:14

Speaker 1: joyful laugh, bubbling like a stream tumbling over rocks. The

00:19:19

Speaker 1: happy sound made the family laugh too. He said, he

00:19:25

Speaker 1: you are not disturbing me at all. It's a pleasure

00:19:30

Speaker 1: to finally meet you. Yes, I am Snaffles, and I

00:19:36

Speaker 1: think I know your names? Are you Mina? And it

00:19:42

Speaker 1: is your brother called Camal Mina and Caamale nodded. Snaffles

00:19:49

Speaker 1: looked at Mina's mother warmly and said, and your name

00:19:54

Speaker 1: is Mum. I've seen you hanging the washing out sometimes

00:19:58

Speaker 1: when i'm flying. You can fly, Mina asked. Snaffles nodded

00:20:06

Speaker 1: and continued talking. I only moved here recently, and I

00:20:13

Speaker 1: love how happy everyone in your street is. I wanted

00:20:17

Speaker 1: to say hello many times, but I was too shy

00:20:21

Speaker 1: to introduce myself. Thank you so much for all the

00:20:27

Speaker 1: socks you've left out for me. It's very kind of you.

00:20:32

Speaker 1: I don't know what happened to that wool you're holding, Mina.

00:20:36

Speaker 1: It started off as a sock, but then it vanished

00:20:39

Speaker 1: on the way here, and all that's left is the wall.

00:20:45

Speaker 1: Mina had so many questions for Snaffles that she didn't

00:20:49

Speaker 1: know where to begin. Snaffles said, your generous neighbors have

00:20:56

Speaker 1: left socks out for me too. HI usually only take one,

00:21:01

Speaker 1: but I did take two earlier from your garden. Oh,

00:21:06

Speaker 1: because they smelled so fragrant. That's why I left a

00:21:11

Speaker 1: note to explain. But you must have one of them back, mom,

00:21:16

Speaker 1: I shouldn't have taken two. He reached behind his ear

00:21:22

Speaker 1: and took one of their father's unwashed socks from it.

00:21:26

Speaker 1: He gave it to Mina's mom. She quietly thanked him

00:21:31

Speaker 1: and put the sock in her pocket. Mina's mom didn't

00:21:36

Speaker 1: have the heart to tell Snaffles the socks hadn't been

00:21:39

Speaker 1: a gift, and she didn't really have the heart to

00:21:43

Speaker 1: tell him her name wasn't really mom. Kamal pointed to

00:21:49

Speaker 1: Snaffles's ears and said, that's a funny place to keep socks,

00:21:58

Speaker 1: is it. Snaffles said, I like how they feel there.

00:22:04

Speaker 1: They're like little cushions for my ears. Gamale put his

00:22:10

Speaker 1: hand over his mouth and giggled. Snaffles looked at Mina's

00:22:15

Speaker 1: mother and said, Mum, would it be okay if I

00:22:21

Speaker 1: invited you and your children into my home. I'd like

00:22:25

Speaker 1: to show you what I've done with all those socks

00:22:28

Speaker 1: you and your neighbors have given me. The children's mother

00:22:33

Speaker 1: said they would love to see inside his home. Snaffles

00:22:38

Speaker 1: opened the door wider and the family stepped inside. They

00:22:44

Speaker 1: were amazed at how big the inside of it was.

00:22:49

Speaker 1: Mina suspected there was something magical about Snaffles. Snaffles took

00:22:56

Speaker 1: them around his home and showed them how he used

00:23:00

Speaker 1: the socks. In the kitchen, they saw socks hanging on

00:23:05

Speaker 1: the walls, and inside them were spoons, forks, and a

00:23:10

Speaker 1: pair of salt and pepper pots. In the living room,

00:23:14

Speaker 1: some socks had been sewn together to make cushions. A

00:23:18

Speaker 1: couple of socks were propped up against the cushions and

00:23:21

Speaker 1: books poked out of them. Smaller socks were hanging from

00:23:26

Speaker 1: the lamp shade, which looked very jolly. Snaffles took them

00:23:31

Speaker 1: into the bedroom and pointed to the bed, where six

00:23:35

Speaker 1: teddy bears were snuggled inside some of Mina's socks. Snaffles

00:23:40

Speaker 1: said he was hoping to make a big blanket when

00:23:44

Speaker 1: he had enough socks. The family were taken into the bathroom,

00:23:49

Speaker 1: where they saw a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste

00:23:53

Speaker 1: in one of Kamal's school socks, and a brush and

00:23:57

Speaker 1: shampoo in one of their mothers. Mina and her mother

00:24:02

Speaker 1: didn't know what to say. They had never seen socks

00:24:06

Speaker 1: used in such a variety of ways before. Kamal said,

00:24:13

Speaker 1: don't you ever wear the socks on your feet? My feet?

00:24:20

Speaker 1: Snaffles said, in surprise, Why would I wear them on

00:24:24

Speaker 1: my feet? That's a very strange place to put them,

00:24:29

Speaker 1: if you don't mind me saying so. But that's where

00:24:35

Speaker 1: they go. Kamal explained, he took the toothbrush and tooth

00:24:41

Speaker 1: paste out of his school sock, kicked his sandal off,

00:24:46

Speaker 1: and poured the sock on. He pointed to it and said, look,

00:24:52

Speaker 1: that's where they go. If I had the other sock,

00:24:57

Speaker 1: it would go on my other foot. I don't really

00:25:00

Speaker 1: like wearing socks all the time, except for my fluffy

00:25:05

Speaker 1: ones that I wear at bedtime. He took the sock

00:25:10

Speaker 1: off and gave it back to Snaffles. Snaffles looked extremely puzzled.

00:25:18

Speaker 1: He peered closely at the sock and said, I don't understand.

00:25:26

Speaker 1: That doesn't make any sense. Why do you put them

00:25:31

Speaker 1: on your feet to keep my feet warm and snugly,

00:25:37

Speaker 1: Kamal said, try it. Snaffles gave the sock a suspicious

00:25:44

Speaker 1: look and put it on his foot. His eyes widened

00:25:50

Speaker 1: in surprise. Goodness, me, that feels wonderful, so cozy and

00:26:01

Speaker 1: soft and snugly. Let me put another one on. He

00:26:09

Speaker 1: found another sock and put it on. Snaffles broke into

00:26:16

Speaker 1: a huge, blissful smile. My feet are so happy, so

00:26:25

Speaker 1: very very happy. He jigged from side to side and

00:26:31

Speaker 1: then twirled around. All of a sudden, he stopped smiling.

00:26:39

Speaker 1: If you need socks, then why do you keep giving

00:26:44

Speaker 1: them away? Mean as Mum kindly explained the socks hadn't

00:26:51

Speaker 1: been a gift, but now that they had met Snaffles

00:26:55

Speaker 1: and seen how cleverly he'd used the socks, they insisted

00:27:00

Speaker 1: that he keep them. Snaffles took the socks off his

00:27:05

Speaker 1: feet and said he couldn't possibly keep them. He apologized

00:27:11

Speaker 1: for thinking that they were gifts. He said, I saw

00:27:16

Speaker 1: one of your neighbors hanging some socks out a few

00:27:20

Speaker 1: weeks ago, and she said to her husband they were

00:27:24

Speaker 1: a present. She must have meant that they had been

00:27:28

Speaker 1: given to her as a present, But at the time

00:27:34

Speaker 1: I thought she meant they were a present for everyone else.

00:27:40

Speaker 1: After that, every time I saw socks on washing lines,

00:27:44

Speaker 1: I thought they were gifts and that I could help

00:27:48

Speaker 1: myself do them. I only took one sock so that

00:27:53

Speaker 1: somebody else could have the other. I've made a terrible mistake.

00:28:00

Speaker 1: I'm so very sorry. Mean, as Mum said, none of

00:28:06

Speaker 1: that matters now, I'm glad you took the socks because

00:28:12

Speaker 1: it meant we got to meet you. I might keep

00:28:16

Speaker 1: some of my belongings in socks. Now. I love how

00:28:20

Speaker 1: you've done that. Please do keep the socks this time.

00:28:26

Speaker 1: They are gifts. And when I explained to my neighbors

00:28:32

Speaker 1: what's happened, they will say the same thing. Snaffles took

00:28:40

Speaker 1: some convincing, but he finally accepted the gifts with a

00:28:46

Speaker 1: shy smile on his fluffy face. He said, Mum, I

00:28:53

Speaker 1: saw you making some socks in the garden last week.

00:28:58

Speaker 1: You were using some sticks and wool. The socks were beautiful.

00:29:06

Speaker 1: Do you think you could show me how to do that? Please?

00:29:13

Speaker 1: I would love to make my own socks. It's bestly

00:29:18

Speaker 1: now that I know they go on my feet, I

00:29:22

Speaker 1: certainly can. It's called knitting, and I have more wool

00:29:28

Speaker 1: than I know what to do with Snaffles. Would you

00:29:33

Speaker 1: like to come back to our house. We'll be having

00:29:37

Speaker 1: something to eat soon and you are welcome to join us.

00:29:41

Speaker 1: And after that I will teach you how to knit.

00:29:47

Speaker 1: Snaffles nodded, tears of happiness in his kind brown eyes.

00:29:55

Speaker 1: The family took their new friend back home. Snaffles insisted

00:30:02

Speaker 1: on introducing himself to the neighbors so he could apologize

00:30:06

Speaker 1: for his misunderstanding about the whole sock business just as

00:30:13

Speaker 1: mean as mother had said. The neighbors insisted Snaffles keep

00:30:19

Speaker 1: the socks. Some of them said he could have more

00:30:22

Speaker 1: if he wanted. Snaffles became a regular visitor to Mina

00:30:28

Speaker 1: and Camale's home. To his delight, he found he was

00:30:34

Speaker 1: extremely good at knitting, and he created socks very quickly.

00:30:42

Speaker 1: Sometimes the families on the street would wake up and

00:30:47

Speaker 1: find extra pairs of beautiful socks on their washing lines.

00:30:53

Speaker 1: They knew the socks hadn't appeared by magic. They had

00:30:58

Speaker 1: been put there by a kind hearted, fluffy animal who

00:31:04

Speaker 1: had become everyone's friend. Snaffles loved wearing socks on his feet,

00:31:12

Speaker 1: especially during the colder months, but his favorite pair of

00:31:19

Speaker 1: socks were the unwashed ones that had belonged to Mina's dad.

00:31:26

Speaker 1: Snaffles used them as little cushions for his ears. Every night,

00:31:33

Speaker 1: as he snuggled down in bed, Snaffles would think about

00:31:39

Speaker 1: his wonderful new friends and how lucky he was. He

00:31:46

Speaker 1: would wriggle his toes inside his fluffy warm socks, sigh happily,

00:31:56

Speaker 1: and drift into a deep, deep sleep.
