Speaker 1: Mina smiled at her brother. He did so love ice cream.

Speaker 1: She laced her hands behind her head and thought about

Speaker 1: the book she'd finished reading the previous day. He had

Speaker 1: been a mystery story, and she had very much enjoyed

Speaker 1: finding out how the mystery had been solved. Mina loved

Speaker 1: mystery stories almost as much as her brother loved ice cream.

Speaker 1: Thinking about her book gave her a wonderful idea. She

Speaker 1: sat up and said to Kamal, we should solve a mystery.

Speaker 1: Kamal didn't know what a mystery was, so Mina did
00:02:48
Speaker 1: her best to explain it to him. As he listened,

Speaker 1: Kamal scrunched up his nose and Mina could tell he
00:02:56
Speaker 1: still didn't understand. Mina tried to think of an easier

Speaker 1: way to explain it, but at that very moment, she

Speaker 1: overheard an interesting conversation taking place between her mother and
00:03:10
Speaker 1: missus Fuddle. It's a mystery, her mother said, her hands

Speaker 1: resting lightly on the garden fence. A complete mystery. I

Speaker 1: just don't know where they go. When it's been happening

Speaker 1: for weeks. Missus Fuddle said, Oh, it's funny you should
00:03:32
Speaker 1: mention it because it's been happening to me also, and
00:03:37
Speaker 1: some of our neighbors have talked about it too. How
00:03:40
Speaker 1: very peculiar. You are right, it is a mystery. Mina

Speaker 1: jumped to her feet and held her hand out to Kama.

Speaker 1: She told him their mother was talking about a mystery
00:03:54
Speaker 1: and she wanted to find out what was going on.

Speaker 1: Kamal took his sister's hand and ran with her over

Speaker 1: to their mother. The children stood politely at their mother's

Speaker 1: side and waited for her to finish talking to missus Fudder.

Speaker 1: When she came to the end of her sentence, their

Speaker 1: mother looked down at her children and smiled. She asked

Speaker 1: how they were doing and if they were having a

Speaker 1: lovely time in the sunshine. Mina and Kamal nodded and

Speaker 1: smiled up at her. Mina said she'd heard her mum

Speaker 1: talking about a mystery and wondered what the mystery was.

Speaker 1: Her mother chuckled and pointed to the laundry drying on
00:04:37
Speaker 1: the washing line. She explained that socks had been going
00:04:41
Speaker 1: missing from the line over the last few weeks. There
00:04:45
Speaker 1: was only one sock that went missing each time, never
00:04:49
Speaker 1: a pair of socks. At first, she had thought the
00:04:53
Speaker 1: missing sock had been left in the washing machine or
00:04:56
Speaker 1: in the laundry basket, but after checking them places, she
00:05:01
Speaker 1: didn't find any odd socks there. She had even checked
00:05:06
Speaker 1: everyone's bedrooms in case there was a lost sock hiding
00:05:09
Speaker 1: underneath their beds, but again there wasn't and she was
00:05:14
Speaker 1: convinced that the socks had indeed disappeared from the washing
00:05:19
Speaker 1: line somehow, and it always happened when she was inside

Speaker 1: the house. Mina tapped her chin and said, hmm, interesting.

Speaker 1: Caamal tapped his chin too and said, yes, interesting, missus.

Speaker 1: Fuddle joined in the conversation. The same thing has been

Speaker 1: happening to me, and it's been going on for a
00:05:46
Speaker 1: few weeks too. I didn't say anything to your mum
00:05:50
Speaker 1: because I thought the socks would turn up somewhere, but
00:05:54
Speaker 1: they haven't. She frowned. It's always a sock that goes
00:05:59
Speaker 1: missing from my line too, never anything else, just a sock.

Speaker 1: I don't know if the socks are blowing away in

Speaker 1: the wind or if someone is taking them when I'm

Speaker 1: in the house. But why would someone take one sock?

Speaker 1: It's a mystery, Mina said, A complete mystery it is.

Speaker 1: Her mother agreed, A mystery I'd love to solve. Perhaps

Speaker 1: I should investigate it like one of those detectives in

Speaker 1: your books, Mina. Mina clapped her hands excitedly. Yes, you

Speaker 1: should do that. Can we help you? Can we solve

Speaker 1: this mystery together? Her mother smiled and said that was

Speaker 1: a wonderful idea, and together they would solve the Great

Speaker 1: sock heist. Kamal asked what a heist was, and his

Speaker 1: mother explained it was when something went missing, sometimes in

Speaker 1: a mysterious way. She asked missus Fuddle if she would

Speaker 1: like to join their team of detectives. I wish I could,

Speaker 1: their neighbor replied, but I've got a million things to
00:07:23
Speaker 1: do to day. Let me know how you get on.

Speaker 1: She waved good bye and went into her house. Mina

Speaker 1: asked her mum what they should do first. Her mom

Speaker 1: tapped her chin. As she thought about the best way

Speaker 1: to start their investigation, she said, if someone has taken
00:07:45
Speaker 1: the socks, we should start with a list of suspects.

Speaker 1: Seeing the confused look on her son's face, she explained
00:07:56
Speaker 1: a suspect was someone who might have taken the item.

Speaker 1: The family fell silent as they pondered possible suspects. They
00:08:07
Speaker 1: soon realized they didn't have any. Mina said, I know
00:08:13
Speaker 1: what we need to do. She dashed into the house
00:08:17
Speaker 1: and returned with a notepad and pencil. She opened up
00:08:21
Speaker 1: the notepad and said, we should make a list of
00:08:25
Speaker 1: our questions about the mystery and then work out how
00:08:29
Speaker 1: to answer each one. When we have all the answers,
00:08:34
Speaker 1: then we'll be able to solve the mystery simple. The

Speaker 1: family came up with a list of questions and Mina
00:08:43
Speaker 1: wrote them all down. Did the socks fly off the
00:08:48
Speaker 1: line in the wind? If so, are they somewhere in
00:08:52
Speaker 1: the garden? Did the socks go missing at the same
00:08:57
Speaker 1: time every day? If someone has taken the socks, why
00:09:03
Speaker 1: would they do that? And do they have a favorite
00:09:07
Speaker 1: color of sock? The last question was Kamal's. When Mina

Speaker 1: wrote it down, he felt very proud to be an
00:09:16
Speaker 1: important member of the detective family. Mina looked at the
00:09:21
Speaker 1: questions and said, if the socks were taken by a
00:09:26
Speaker 1: person or an animal, perhaps they have very cold feet
00:09:32
Speaker 1: and they need to keep them warm. I don't want
00:09:35
Speaker 1: any one to have cold feet. If we find out

Speaker 1: who is taking the socks, can we let them keep them? Mum,

Speaker 1: I've got plenty of socks. They can even have some

Speaker 1: more if they like. Kamal said they could have all

Speaker 1: of his socks because he didn't even like wearing them.

Speaker 1: He wriggled his bare toes and sied his sandals and grinned.

Speaker 1: Mina's mum gave her children a fond look and said

Speaker 1: if they did find out someone was taking the socks

Speaker 1: because they had cold feet, she would give them hers too,

Speaker 1: and she would also knit some special ones for them.

Speaker 1: wool just waiting to be made into rainbow colored socks.

Speaker 1: Mina suggested the family hide in the kitchen and peep

Speaker 1: the socks. Great idea. Her mum said, there are plenty

Speaker 1: of socks already on the line. Let's go inside and

Speaker 1: see what happens. The family went into the kitchen and

Speaker 1: peeped through one of the windows. They waited and waited.

Speaker 1: After a while, Kamal started to fidget. He had to

Speaker 1: use the bathroom. Mina did too, and so did their mother.

Speaker 1: The family took it in turns to use the bathroom.

Speaker 1: They returned to the kitchen and looked through the window.

Speaker 1: A sock was missing. It's one o mine, Kamal said, happily.

Speaker 1: I'm glad they've taken one of mine. I hope they

Speaker 1: come back for the other one. Mina asked her ma'am

Speaker 1: if they should try hiding again. Ma'am had a bit

Speaker 1: of a cheeky smile on her face. She said, I

Speaker 1: am interested to see who's taking our socks, but let's

Speaker 1: see if they like all of our socks. I haven't

Speaker 1: tried this before. I'm going to put a pair of

Speaker 1: your dad's unwashed socks on the line and see if

Speaker 1: they get taken. At the thought of their dad's unwashed socks,

Speaker 1: Mina and Kamale pulled a face and then laughed at

Speaker 1: each other. Their mother left the room and went in
00:12:15
Speaker 1: search of their father's socks. When she came into the kitchen.

Speaker 1: She was holding them at arm's length and trying not
00:12:22
Speaker 1: to breathe in the strong smell. She went outside and

Speaker 1: quickly put them on the line. She returned to the

Speaker 1: children whilst they waited to see what would happen. They

Speaker 1: sat on the sofa in the living room and their

Speaker 1: mother told them a story about a princess called Samaira

Speaker 1: who found a magical silver scarf inside a secret cave.

Speaker 1: The children instinctively snuggled closer to their mother, and she

Speaker 1: wrapped her arms around them. She spoke in a soft,

Speaker 1: soothing voice. Little Kamar fell asleep. Mina soon followed. Their

Speaker 1: mother stopped talking and closed her eyes. The family had

Speaker 1: a peaceful nap and woke up at the same time.

Speaker 1: They went into the kitchen and looked at the washing line.

Speaker 1: They were astonished to see that both of their father's

Speaker 1: socks had gone. The children's mother started laughing and said

Speaker 1: that was the first time two socks had been taken,

Speaker 1: and she would remember to tell their father, as she

Speaker 1: was sure he would feel very special. Indeed, Mina appeared

Speaker 1: closer through the window and said there was a piece

Speaker 1: of paper on the line where the socks had been

Speaker 1: They went outside and looked at the paper. It had

Speaker 1: words on it. Mum read it out, dear family, thank

Speaker 1: you very much for all the socks. It's very kind

Speaker 1: of you to give me such a wonderful gift. I

Speaker 1: hope you don't mind, but I took two this time

Speaker 1: because they smelled so lovely. Kind regards Snaffles. Her heart

Speaker 1: of a smiling animal that looked like a cute, fluffy dog,

Speaker 1: but who were standing on two feet. Gamal said Snaffles

Speaker 1: looked very kind. Mina's mum smiled softly and agreed. She

Speaker 1: said it was a lovely note, but she didn't know

Speaker 1: why Snaffles thought the socks were a gift. Perhaps they

Speaker 1: should try to meet Snaffles and it explain they weren't

Speaker 1: a gift. But Snaffles can keep your dad's socks. I

Speaker 1: don't want them back, she added. Mina had an idea.

Speaker 1: We need a trail to follow, something that will lead

Speaker 1: us to Snaffles, and I know what to use. She

Speaker 1: needed her mum's permission for the first part of her plan.

Speaker 1: When her mum heard what her plan was, she readily agreed.

Speaker 1: Mina went into the house and came back out with

Speaker 1: a pair of bright red socks. She gave them to

Speaker 1: her mom, who carefully unpicked the end row of wool

Speaker 1: from each sock and then tied it to the line.

Speaker 1: Mina explained to her brother that when Snaffles took a

Speaker 1: sock off the line, the end bit of wool would

Speaker 1: stay tied to the line and the rest would unravel,

Speaker 1: trail along the ground and lead them to Snaffles. Hopefully

Speaker 1: their plan would work. At that very moment, the cheerful

Speaker 1: sound of the ice cream van filled the air. The

Speaker 1: children's mother knew that the great sock heist would have

Speaker 1: to wait. The children would want an ice cream, and

Speaker 1: she was going to have one too. The family left

Speaker 1: the garden and joined the queue outside the ice cream van.

Speaker 1: They returned to the garden with huge swells of strawberry

Speaker 1: and chocolate ice cream towering on top of cornets. Each

Speaker 1: ice cream was covered in sparkling sprinkles. One of the

Speaker 1: red socks had been taken from the line, but the

Speaker 1: family were too absorbed in their delicious treats to notice.

Speaker 1: never noticed the peculiar tree before one word had been

Speaker 1: etched into the door, Snaffles. The children's mother, tapped lightly

Speaker 1: on the door. The door opened, and Snaffles stood there.

Speaker 1: He looked a bit like an adorable dog and a

Speaker 1: bit like a fluffy cushion. He wasn't much bigger than camal.

Speaker 1: gently in the wind, and huge brown eyes gazed kindly

Speaker 1: at the family. Snaffles smiled and said hello. Looking into

Speaker 1: warm and fuzzy inside. They had never seen such a

Speaker 1: know where to begin. Snaffles said, your generous neighbors have

Speaker 1: left socks out for me too. HI usually only take one,

Speaker 1: but I did take two earlier from your garden. Oh,

Speaker 1: because they smelled so fragrant. That's why I left a

Speaker 1: note to explain. But you must have one of them back, mom,

Speaker 1: I shouldn't have taken two. He reached behind his ear

Speaker 1: and took one of their father's unwashed socks from it.

Speaker 1: He gave it to Mina's mom. She quietly thanked him

Speaker 1: and put the sock in her pocket. Mina's mom didn't

Speaker 1: have the heart to tell Snaffles the socks hadn't been

Speaker 1: a gift, and she didn't really have the heart to

Speaker 1: tell him her name wasn't really mom. Kamal pointed to

Speaker 1: Snaffles's ears and said, that's a funny place to keep socks,

Speaker 1: is it. Snaffles said, I like how they feel there.

Speaker 1: They're like little cushions for my ears. Gamale put his

Speaker 1: hand over his mouth and giggled. Snaffles looked at Mina's

Speaker 1: mother and said, Mum, would it be okay if I

Speaker 1: invited you and your children into my home. I'd like

Speaker 1: to show you what I've done with all those socks

Speaker 1: you and your neighbors have given me. The children's mother

Speaker 1: said they would love to see inside his home. Snaffles

Speaker 1: opened the door wider and the family stepped inside. They

Speaker 1: were amazed at how big the inside of it was.

Speaker 1: Mina suspected there was something magical about Snaffles. Snaffles took

Speaker 1: them around his home and showed them how he used

Speaker 1: the socks. In the kitchen, they saw socks hanging on

Speaker 1: the walls, and inside them were spoons, forks, and a

Speaker 1: pair of salt and pepper pots. In the living room,

Speaker 1: some socks had been sewn together to make cushions. A

Speaker 1: couple of socks were propped up against the cushions and

Speaker 1: books poked out of them. Smaller socks were hanging from

Speaker 1: the lamp shade, which looked very jolly. Snaffles took them

Speaker 1: into the bedroom and pointed to the bed, where six

Speaker 1: teddy bears were snuggled inside some of Mina's socks. Snaffles

Speaker 1: said he was hoping to make a big blanket when
00:23:44
Speaker 1: he had enough socks. The family were taken into the bathroom,

Speaker 1: where they saw a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste
00:23:53
Speaker 1: in one of Kamal's school socks, and a brush and
00:23:57
Speaker 1: shampoo in one of their mothers. Mina and her mother

Speaker 1: didn't know what to say. They had never seen socks

Speaker 1: used in such a variety of ways before. Kamal said,

Speaker 1: don't you ever wear the socks on your feet? My feet?

Speaker 1: Snaffles said, in surprise, Why would I wear them on

Speaker 1: my feet? That's a very strange place to put them,

Speaker 1: if you don't mind me saying so. But that's where

Speaker 1: they go. Kamal explained, he took the toothbrush and tooth

Speaker 1: paste out of his school sock, kicked his sandal off,

Speaker 1: and poured the sock on. He pointed to it and said, look,
