[00:04:31] Snoozy Suzy had been Suzy's nickname since almost the day she was born.

[00:04:36] It was her mum and dad who'd first come up with it,

[00:04:39] because they noticed, in the very first weeks of her life,

[00:04:44] that there was one activity that Suzy enjoyed more than any other.

[00:04:49] That's right, napping.

[00:04:52] It didn't really matter what time of the day, evening or night it was.

[00:04:57] When baby Suzy got laid down in her crib, or on the sofa,

[00:05:02] or even just down on her mama's lap for a moment,

[00:05:05] her dreamy smile would spread over her face.

[00:05:09] The tangle of golden curls around her head would seem to glow like a halo.

[00:05:15] Her delicate baby eyelids would close.

[00:05:19] And, just like that, she would be off,

[00:05:24] napping in the land of Nod.

[00:05:28] Our little baby could snooze anywhere,

[00:05:33] Suzy's mum would remark, shaking her head in wonder.

[00:05:38] She could fall asleep on a noisy train, her dad agreed.

[00:05:43] Or propped up at a busy dinner table, her mum suggested.

[00:05:49] Or hanging upside down from a tree, her dad ventured.

[00:05:54] Well, yes, her mum said to that,

[00:05:58] but we wouldn't want to try that one out.

[00:06:01] She's not even a year old, after all.

[00:06:05] As she got older, through being a toddler,

[00:06:08] and into her early years of being a fully grown child,

[00:06:12] Snoozy Suzy kept her favourite pastime,

[00:06:15] and her nickname.

[00:06:16] She napped on the school bus.

[00:06:20] She napped in the playground.

[00:06:22] She napped beneath the table when she went over to see friends.

[00:06:27] There was absolutely nothing quite as satisfying and rejuvenating as a swift snooze.

[00:06:35] Her 20-minute power nap.

[00:06:37] Her cosy little kip.

[00:06:40] By no means was napping an exclusive activity for Snoozy Suzy.

[00:06:46] Nope.

[00:06:47] She was such an advocate for napping,

[00:06:50] that she regularly invited her three closest friends to join her.

[00:06:55] Polly, Poppy and Pete.

[00:06:59] Ask your parents if they can bring you over to my house at the weekend,

[00:07:05] she'd tell them at school.

[00:07:06] We can play, then we can nap, and then we can play again.

[00:07:13] That's how she got into making bedtime thoughts,

[00:07:17] so that there'd be somewhere special for her and her friends to take their naps.

[00:07:22] At first, these thoughts started out very rudimentary indeed.

[00:07:29] Just a bunch of pillows or cushions laid out in the perfect arrangement on the floor,

[00:07:35] with a soft woolen blanket laid over them.

[00:07:40] But then, over time, the thoughts began to get more elaborate.

[00:07:46] Snoozy Suzy would gather the kitchen chairs together

[00:07:50] and drape bedsheets over them,

[00:07:53] so that you could crawl under and lie on your back beneath the white cotton canopy.

[00:08:01] Or she would get her dad to set up the pop-up tent in the garden

[00:08:06] and fill it with duvets and the battery-powered nightlight

[00:08:11] that shone little yellow stars onto the black canvas ceiling.

[00:08:15] Once she even filled the bath with blankets

[00:08:19] and let the water trickle out of the tap into the sink,

[00:08:23] so that if you closed your eyes,

[00:08:26] it sounded like you were napping near a waterfall.

[00:08:31] We love your bedtime thoughts, Snoozy Suzy,

[00:08:35] her friends Polly, Poppy and Pete would remark.

[00:08:40] They're the best bedtime thoughts ever.

[00:08:45] Suzy was always glad to hear such compliments,

[00:08:49] but she knew in her heart of hearts

[00:08:53] that what her friends said wasn't true.

[00:08:57] Sure, she absolutely believed that they loved her bedtime thoughts.

[00:09:02] Who wouldn't?

[00:09:03] But she didn't think they were the best bedtime thoughts ever.

[00:09:09] The problem was this.

[00:09:12] Everyone had particular needs and tastes

[00:09:16] when it came to the perfect environment for having a nap.

[00:09:20] Polly, for example, she needed utter silence to sleep properly,

[00:09:26] but Poppy preferred to have some noise in the background.

[00:09:30] Pete liked to be nestled in softness and warmth,

[00:09:36] but Polly liked something firmer to sleep on.

[00:09:41] Poppy liked to nap in total darkness,

[00:09:45] because even a little bit of light against her eyelids kept her awake.

[00:09:50] But poor little Pete was scared of the dark.

[00:09:56] He needed at least a nightlight on,

[00:09:59] so that he felt safe and comfy enough to drop off.

[00:10:05] So, you see,

[00:10:07] that was Snoozy Suzy's problem.

[00:10:10] The best bedtime thought would be able to satisfy

[00:10:14] all of her friends' different naptime needs,

[00:10:18] and hers simply didn't.

[00:10:22] What a dilemma.

[00:10:25] Then, one morning at school,

[00:10:29] Snoozy Suzy trotted up to her friends in the playground,

[00:10:33] her face bright and red with excitement.

[00:10:36] To dream, she said to them,

[00:10:42] the words coming out a hurried garble.

[00:10:45] I had a dream.

[00:10:47] I had a dream.

[00:10:49] It took a little while,

[00:10:51] before Polly, Poppy and Pete

[00:10:53] managed to calm Snoozy Suzy down enough

[00:10:56] to be able to understand what she was saying.

[00:11:01] It turned out that the night before,

[00:11:04] Suzy had had a vivid dream

[00:11:06] in which she met a very friendly koala bear.

[00:11:12] A koala bear?

[00:11:14] Asked Polly with a frown.

[00:11:17] Yes, said Suzy.

[00:11:20] A koala bear.

[00:11:21] A koala bear who could talk

[00:11:24] and play the ukulele.

[00:11:28] A ukulele?

[00:11:30] Poppy repeated,

[00:11:32] confusion in her eyes.

[00:11:34] Yes, a ukulele,

[00:11:36] Suzy said.

[00:11:37] And the koala bear showed me

[00:11:41] how to make the best bedtime thought ever.

[00:11:46] Best bedtime thought?

[00:11:48] Pete asked,

[00:11:50] a look of puzzlement on his face.

[00:11:53] From their reactions,

[00:11:54] it was clear to Snoozy Suzy

[00:11:57] that her friends couldn't make heads or tails

[00:12:00] of what she was saying.

[00:12:01] Don't worry about it,

[00:12:04] she said.

[00:12:05] Just make sure

[00:12:06] you all come over to my house

[00:12:09] after school on Friday

[00:12:11] and be prepared

[00:12:23] and marched away across the playground,

[00:12:27] leaving her friends

[00:12:28] to watch her disappear,

[00:12:31] bewildered.

[00:12:33] Here's what happened

[00:12:35] in Snoozy Suzy's dream.

[00:12:38] She was walking through a forest,

[00:12:41] rays of twilight lilac light

[00:12:44] falling through the branches overhead,

[00:12:47] the smell of pine needles

[00:12:49] drifting up from the forest floor.

[00:12:53] The only sound

[00:12:54] was the crunch of dried leaves

[00:12:57] and twigs beneath her feet,

[00:12:59] the whisper of the wind

[00:13:02] through the trees,

[00:13:04] and somewhere

[00:13:05] in the distance,

[00:13:07] the tinkling sound of water.

[00:13:11] Then there was another sound,

[00:13:15] the sound

[00:13:16] of music.

[00:13:18] Plucked strings

[00:13:20] tinkling like raindrops

[00:13:22] on a tin roof.

[00:13:25] She followed the music

[00:13:26] until she entered a clearing

[00:13:29] in the forest.

[00:13:30] And there,

[00:13:31] in the middle

[00:13:32] of the clearing,

[00:13:34] sitting on a tree stump,

[00:13:36] was a koala

[00:13:38] playing a ukulele.

[00:13:41] When Suzy arrived

[00:13:43] in the clearing,

[00:13:44] the koala

[00:13:45] stopped his playing.

[00:13:47] He looked straight at her

[00:13:49] and asked,

[00:13:52] Are you a ghost?

[00:13:54] Oh, no,

[00:13:57] said Suzy.

[00:13:58] I'm just a girl.

[00:14:01] Except,

[00:14:02] she added,

[00:14:04] looking around,

[00:14:05] I think I'm asleep

[00:14:07] and dreaming.
