Speaker 1: Hey Abby, here you can listen to this episode in full.

00:00:21

Speaker 1: the supercast link in the show notes. Anyway, here's a

00:00:25

Speaker 1: preview of this very special episode. Some things happen every

00:00:38

Speaker 1: single day. You probably wake up and yawn and stretch

00:00:42

Speaker 1: and head downstairs for breakfast. Many of those days, you'll

00:00:46

Speaker 1: go to school, not every day, but most days, And

00:00:50

Speaker 1: then every few months you'll get to have a break

00:00:53

Speaker 1: from school. That's when you can sleep in late, spending

00:00:57

Speaker 1: extra time snuggled under the blacks, and you can go

00:01:01

Speaker 1: to the park whenever you want and pass an entire

00:01:05

Speaker 1: afternoon doing absolutely nothing at all. And once a year

00:01:12

Speaker 1: it's your birthday, just one day every year. It can

00:01:17

Speaker 1: sometimes feel like an awfully long time between birthdays, and

00:01:23

Speaker 1: then suddenly there you are blowing out one more candle

00:01:28

Speaker 1: on a cake and unwrapping presents and listening to people say, my,

00:01:34

Speaker 1: haven't you grown? And then it goes right back to

00:01:38

Speaker 1: how it always is. The very next day, So imagine

00:01:45

Speaker 1: if you had to wait four years, four whole years

00:01:51

Speaker 1: before anything different happened in your days. That is how

00:01:55

Speaker 1: long the good luck gnomes who live in mister Featherman's

00:01:59

Speaker 1: garden in village of Lower Starry Skies have to wait.

00:02:04

Speaker 1: Come to that, That is how long all nomes everywhere

00:02:08

Speaker 1: around the world have to wait too. Perhaps you've heard

00:02:13

Speaker 1: of leap years, those strange times that only happen once

00:02:18

Speaker 1: every four years, when suddenly an extra day magically appears

00:02:24

Speaker 1: at the end of February. Scientists can tell you all

00:02:28

Speaker 1: sorts of complicated reasons for this extra day, but the

00:02:32

Speaker 1: gnomes will tell you a very different story. They created it,

00:02:38

Speaker 1: you see, so they could have a special day off.

00:02:44

Speaker 1: The good luck gnomes love their jobs. They love disappearing

00:02:49

Speaker 1: into due soaked fields to hunt for four leaf clovers

00:02:54

Speaker 1: and add a little dab of good luck. They love

00:02:57

Speaker 1: finding horseshoes and putting them the right way up, pouring

00:03:02

Speaker 1: a dose of good luck into the smooth curve. Good

00:03:06

Speaker 1: Luck can be poured into anything, really, from poppies to

00:03:11

Speaker 1: pennies to pajamas. As soon as the gnomes hear that

00:03:16

Speaker 1: someone has been given a lucky pen to help them

00:03:20

Speaker 1: with exams. They dash off in the middle of the

00:03:23

Speaker 1: night to find the pen and make sure it really

00:03:27

Speaker 1: does have a little dab of good luck added to it.

00:03:31

Speaker 1: And sometimes people will find something like a particularly beautiful feather,

00:03:38

Speaker 1: and they'll feel so lucky to have found it that

00:03:42

Speaker 1: they decide it must be a good luck charm, which

00:03:46

Speaker 1: keeps those gnomes on their toes as they need to

00:03:49

Speaker 1: go and find that too. One of the gnomes favorite

00:03:54

Speaker 1: pastimes is sharing the strangest things they've had to add

00:03:59

Speaker 1: a dab of good luck too. A gnome who lives

00:04:04

Speaker 1: beneath the oak tree in mister Featherman's garden once had

00:04:08

Speaker 1: to add some good luck to a rabbit, who, upon

00:04:12

Speaker 1: seeing the gnome coming towards him, took fright and shot

00:04:15

Speaker 1: into the back of his hutch. So the gnome had

00:04:18

Speaker 1: to spend half the night coaxing him out of the

00:04:22

Speaker 1: corner with promises of carrots and cabbage before he could

00:04:27

Speaker 1: lean over, and there pop some good luck onto the

00:04:32

Speaker 1: rabbit's ears. But much as the good luck gnomes love

00:04:37

Speaker 1: their jobs, they also love their day off every four years.

00:04:43

Speaker 1: It's the only time they ever used some of their

00:04:45

Speaker 1: magic on themselves. Although it may seem on February twenty ninth,

00:04:52

Speaker 1: when you look into a garden that the gnomes are

00:04:55

Speaker 1: all there in their rightful places, they're really quite far

00:05:00

Speaker 1: away doing something else. Entirely listen to the full episode
