[00:05:06] So now, stay with those thoughts of thanks and I'll introduce you to tonight's tale.

[00:05:13] The family we're about to meet is preparing for their Thanksgiving feast.

[00:05:18] But unfortunately, in their rush, they leave their pumpkin pie on the supermarket checkout.

[00:05:24] Luckily for them, they selected a plucky pie who is willing to find her own way to their table.

[00:05:31] This is The Pumpkin Pie Adventure by Luke Prendergast.

[00:05:37] Thanksgiving was approaching.

[00:05:47] Outside, the leaves on the trees had turned gold and orange and red and the days were getting shorter.

[00:05:54] Now, at night time, the moon was a big cheesy grin in the sky.

[00:06:00] Potatoes were being mashed.

[00:06:02] Cranberries were being stewed.

[00:06:04] And decorations were being put up in all the houses across town.

[00:06:09] In one aisle of the supermarket, the shelves had been lined with pumpkin pies.

[00:06:15] All of these pumpkin pies had been baked especially for the holiday season.

[00:06:20] And each and every one of them couldn't wait to be chosen by a happy customer and taken to the checkout,

[00:06:27] rung through the till, and then get carried home to take pride of place in the centre of the Thanksgiving table.

[00:06:36] One by one, the pumpkin pies were chosen.

[00:06:40] Some were lifted from the shelves by families, young and old.

[00:06:45] Others by newlywed couples.

[00:06:47] Others yet by groups of friends, spending the holiday seasons away from their parents.

[00:06:54] Some were taken by old ladies with grey in their hair.

[00:06:57] Others by young children whose fathers had lifted them up by the waist so that they could reach the top shelf.

[00:07:06] Finally, there was only one pumpkin pie left, whose name was Patty.

[00:07:12] Even though Patty was a particularly beautiful looking pie, with a crisp crust and rich orange surface with a bright sheen,

[00:07:22] all her friends had been selected first.

[00:07:26] This might have been because she was stacked at the back of the shelf.

[00:07:30] But she wasn't worried.

[00:07:32] She was a very optimistic pumpkin pie.

[00:07:35] And she was sure that sooner or later someone would arrive, chosen by destiny, to take her home for Thanksgiving.

[00:07:43] And she was right.

[00:07:45] On the morning of Thanksgiving itself, a woman lifted Patty right off the shelf.

[00:07:52] What do you think, Martin?

[00:07:55] The woman asked, showing Patty to her son, a boy of about seven years old, who was wearing a red plaid shirt and a scarf.

[00:08:04] That one looks perfect, Martin replied to his mum.

[00:08:10] I thought so too, she said and placed the pumpkin pie in her shopping trolley,

[00:08:15] alongside everything else she was taking home that day.

[00:08:19] Patty said hello to them all.

[00:08:21] The yams, the cornbread, the stuffing, the candles.

[00:08:26] Hello, Patty, they said back in a chorus.

[00:08:29] Patty was very happy indeed.

[00:08:33] All her life, she'd known that her true purpose was to adorn the centre of the Thanksgiving table

[00:08:40] and bring joy to those around her on the holiday season.

[00:08:45] And now, that moment was finally here.

[00:08:49] Shortly, she'd be taken home by Martin and his mother and her purpose would be fulfilled.

[00:08:57] She fizzed with excitement as she watched the yams get rung through the till and placed into a big paper bag.

[00:09:04] And she fizzed even more as she watched the cornbread, the stuffing, and the candles go through too,

[00:09:12] placed in the bag beside the yams.

[00:09:14] Finally, it was her turn.

[00:09:18] The boy at the till picked her up, rang her through with a beep and placed her beside the paper bag.

[00:09:28] Martin's mum got out her purse, paid the boy at checkout, lifted the paper bag into her arms and left.

[00:09:37] Patty watched as she walked towards the door, holding Martin's hand in hers.

[00:09:45] Wait, Patty called.

[00:09:48] Wait, Patty called.

[00:09:49] You've forgotten me.

[00:09:50] You're going to need your pumpkin pie.

[00:09:54] Wait up.

[00:09:56] They couldn't hear her.

[00:09:58] They were already gone.

[00:10:01] Behind her, the boy at the checkout had closed the till to go on his break.

[00:10:06] And it dawned on Patty that she might be stuck here at the checkout all day

[00:10:11] and never make it to the center of a table to spread holiday joy.

[00:10:18] Such a realization might have caused another pumpkin pie to worry, but not Patty.

[00:10:25] Patty was a brave and terribly positive pie, and she never let anything faze her.

[00:10:34] So, it seemed that Martin and his mother had accidentally left her behind.

[00:10:40] They were sure to be disappointed when they got home and found that they didn't have a pumpkin pie.

[00:10:47] It may well ruin their day.

[00:10:50] And so, she decided, there was only one thing for it.

[00:10:56] She must find her own way to Martin's house.

[00:11:00] Yes, and in time for Thanksgiving, too, Patty took a deep breath and, with a bit of effort,

[00:11:10] pushed her arms through the side of the pastry and her legs through the bottom of the pastry.

[00:11:17] She gave her fingers and her toes a wiggle.

[00:11:20] That was better, she thought.

[00:11:22] Now she could get about by herself.

[00:11:26] Careful not to fall, she clambered down the side of the checkout.

[00:11:31] When she reached the floor, she looked from left to right to check the coast was clear,

[00:11:38] before running over to the sliding doors.

[00:11:42] She didn't want to risk being seen.

[00:11:45] She didn't know what a human being would think if they saw a pumpkin pie

[00:11:49] skipping across the supermarket floor all by herself.

[00:12:25] She said, there was no way to go.

[00:12:27] Well then, she thought.

[00:12:30] The first thing she must do is find out where she was going.

[00:12:36] Patty the pumpkin pie walked up the street, past the shops and a little cafe.

[00:12:44] Outside the cafe, seats were gathered around little round tables with parasols open on them.

[00:12:50] On top of one of the tables, she saw a mouse who was collecting sugar granules that had been spilt on the table.

[00:12:59] Hello!

[00:13:00] Patty called up.

[00:13:01] And the mouse turned around, gave a little twitch of her nose and called back down.

[00:13:07] Why, hello.

[00:13:09] Can I help you?

[00:13:12] Yes, please, Patty said.

[00:13:15] And straight away she explained the situation she found herself in.

[00:13:19] You see, she said when she'd finished her tale.

[00:13:23] I need to find out where Martin lives.

[00:13:27] You wouldn't by any chance happen to know, would you?

[00:13:31] The mouse swung her tale back and forth in the air a few times in contemplation.

[00:13:37] Then she said,

[00:13:39] I'm afraid I don't know who Martin is and don't know where he lives.

[00:13:47] But, she added, her eyes brightening up,

[00:13:51] I know someone who can help you.

[00:13:54] My pal, Rufus the Hound.

[00:13:57] I bet he'll be able to lend you his nose.

[00:14:01] Shall I take you to him?

[00:14:04] Yes, please, Patty said, a warm feeling of relief spreading through her.

[00:14:11] The mouse scurried down the table leg, stood in front of her and said,

[00:14:17] Follow me then.

[00:14:19] And together, the two of them made their way down the road.

[00:14:25] Soon enough, they reached an alleyway.

[00:14:28] And the mouse said,

[00:14:30] Just down here.

[00:14:33] Patty followed her down the alley.

[00:14:36] And at the end, they came to a small garden square.

[00:14:39] With bright green grass, tall trees and lots of flower beds.

[00:14:46] He's just in here, the mouse assured her.

[00:14:50] Then she pointed across the park.

[00:14:52] There he is.

[00:14:54] She was pointing at a dog on the other side of the square,

[00:14:58] who had his nose buried in a rose bush.

[00:15:02] Hey, Rufus, over here, the mouse called.

[00:15:06] And the big dog came bounding over from the other side of the park.

[00:15:12] Rufus had large feet and white fur, with splodges of brown and black all over him.

[00:15:18] He had very long ears that almost reached down to his paws.

[00:15:23] And the skin on his face and body was loose and wrinkly.

[00:15:28] He had a big smile on his face and seemed like a very friendly dog indeed,

[00:15:35] when he said hello to Patty and the mouse.

[00:15:39] What can I do for you this holiday season?

[00:15:44] Rufus asked.

[00:15:46] The mouse explained to Rufus that she had met Patty on the street,

[00:15:51] and that Patty needed to find Martin and his mother,

[00:15:55] who had put Patty into their shopping trolley,

[00:15:58] but had forgotten to take her home at the checkout.

[00:16:03] Ah, Rufus sighed, full of understanding.

[00:16:09] Let me see what I can do, he thought for a second,

[00:16:15] gave his long ears a flap,

[00:16:18] and asked Patty whether Martin or his mother

[00:16:22] had picked her up with their bare hands when they took her off the shelf.

[00:16:27] Patty cast her memory back

[00:16:29] and told him that yes, they had.

[00:16:34] Well, that's brilliant, Rufus said.

[00:16:39] That means they'll have left their scent on you.

[00:16:45] Rufus has got the most sensitive sense of smell in the whole world,

[00:16:51] said the mouse, full of pride at her friend's remarkable nose.

[00:16:55] Oh, now, Rufus said, his modesty making him a little shy.

[00:17:02] Not in the whole world.

[00:17:06] Maybe in the town.

[00:17:09] But the mouse insisted his was their best nose in the whole world.

[00:17:22] Patty agreed that that truly was an amazing talent.

[00:17:29] So, said Rufus, pointing a paw at his nose.

[00:17:34] May I?

[00:17:35] Oh, please do, Patty replied.

[00:17:40] Rufus the hound held his nose directly above her

[00:17:45] and took a deep breath in.

[00:17:48] Oh, I smell pumpkin, he said.

[00:17:56] He took another deep breath.

[00:18:00] And cinnamon.

[00:18:03] Another breath.

[00:18:06] And that's nutmeg.

[00:18:10] Rufus took one more deep breath and then cried,

[00:18:15] with a look of happy satisfaction on his face.

[00:18:19] Got him.

[00:18:20] I can smell Martin and his mother.

[00:18:25] Rufus held up a paw, asking them to hold on a moment.

[00:18:30] He stuck his nose in the air, gave two great big sniffs,

[00:18:37] and then pointed across the park.

[00:18:40] And they live in that direction.

[00:18:45] I can smell them on the air.

[00:18:50] Patty was very impressed and told Rufus so.

[00:18:54] The mouse said, I told you he was the best.

[00:18:59] Now I know which direction Martin and his mother live in,

[00:19:03] said Patty, thinking out loud.

[00:19:06] I just have to find out how to get there.

[00:19:11] Well, said Rufus the hound, why don't I take you?

[00:19:16] You can hop on my back and I'll follow the scent across town

[00:19:22] and take you to wherever they are.

[00:19:27] Patty was deeply moved by Rufus's generous offer.

[00:19:31] Oh, really?

[00:19:33] She said.

[00:19:34] That's so kind.

[00:19:36] Would you be able to?

[00:19:38] Oh, for sure, said Rufus, nodding.

[00:19:43] I like running across town almost as much as I love smelling things.

[00:19:51] Patty thanked the mouse for all her help,

[00:19:54] and the mouse told her that she hoped she found Martin and his mother in time.

[00:20:01] Rufus lay down on the floor so that Patty could climb more easily onto his back.

[00:20:07] Once she was there, he said,

[00:20:11] Ready?

[00:20:12] She told him she was, and with that, they were gone.

[00:20:17] It was exhilarating to ride on the back of a dog,

[00:20:21] but strangely calming at the same time.

[00:20:26] Rufus had a lolloping gait,

[00:20:29] and while it took a minute to get used to it,

[00:20:32] when she did, Patty found this rocking motion peacefully hypnotic.

[00:20:40] Together they bounded through the town.

[00:20:43] They passed the tall municipal buildings,

[00:20:46] the bank, and the markets and the arcade of shops.

[00:20:50] They passed the main street,

[00:20:53] where the Thanksgiving parade was mustering,

[00:20:56] colourful floats lined up one after the other.

[00:21:00] They passed friends hand in hand,

[00:21:04] men sat on stoops,

[00:21:06] a cat curled up on a warm metal dustbin lid.

[00:21:12] This way, Rufus shouted,

[00:21:14] and then he bounded down a side street,

[00:21:18] which was lined with brownstone houses.

[00:21:22] Through the windows,

[00:21:24] Patty spotted families setting their tables for Thanksgiving dinner,

[00:21:28] and she remembered her purpose,

[00:21:31] and hoped that she'd make it to Martin's house in time.

[00:21:36] Soon, they came to a smaller street,

[00:21:39] lined with tall trees,

[00:21:41] their leaves rustling like whispering voices in the breeze.

[00:21:47] Rufus stopped in front of a small white house,

[00:21:50] with a yard out the front,

[00:21:52] with a swing set and a black and white football.

[00:21:57] Here we are, Rufus said,

[00:22:00] and Patty the Pumpkin Pie replied,

[00:22:02] Is this it?

[00:22:05] Yup, said Rufus,

[00:22:08] nodding his head so his big ears flapped about.

[00:22:12] I've followed the scent,

[00:22:14] clear as day,

[00:22:16] and this is where it's led me.

[00:22:20] Patty looked at the house,

[00:22:21] wondering whether this was where Martin and his mother lived.

[00:22:25] The swings and football could easily be his,

[00:22:29] but she needed a clearer sign.

[00:22:32] Just as she had thought this,

[00:22:35] past the open window,

[00:22:37] in front of the house,

[00:22:38] past the figure of a woman.

[00:22:41] Patty recognized her immediately.

[00:22:44] It was Martin's mum.

[00:22:47] You're right, Rufus,

[00:22:49] Patty cried happily.

[00:22:51] This is the right house.

[00:22:53] That's Martin's mum.

[00:22:57] Rufus bounced around and gave a bark of glee.

[00:23:02] Patty watched as Martin's mother carried a plate of food

[00:23:06] and placed it on a big wooden table,

[00:23:09] which was set for a whole family ready to eat on.

[00:23:14] Then she left the room.

[00:23:17] Thank you very much for bringing me here,

[00:23:20] Rufus,

[00:23:21] said Patty.

[00:23:23] Now we're here.

[00:23:24] I just need to find a way to get inside.

[00:23:29] I wonder if there's a key hidden around

[00:23:32] or a door cracked open somewhere.

[00:23:36] If that window was a little bit lower to the ground,

[00:23:41] I'd be able to climb through that.

[00:23:43] But unfortunately,

[00:23:44] it's too high up

[00:23:46] and I can't climb that far.

[00:23:51] Patty liked to voice her thoughts out loud like this.

[00:23:55] And as she did,

[00:23:57] Rufus nodded in agreement

[00:23:59] with everything she said.

[00:24:01] He stuck his nose in the air

[00:24:04] and sniffed,

[00:24:06] but said that he couldn't smell a key

[00:24:08] anywhere nearby.

[00:24:10] Then his ears pricked up

[00:24:12] and he sniffed the air again

[00:24:15] and said,

[00:24:16] Wait,

[00:24:18] what's that?

[00:24:20] Somebody's coming.

[00:24:22] And sure enough,

[00:24:24] around the corner of the house

[00:24:26] and into the yard

[00:24:27] strode a proud-looking turkey

[00:24:29] with a dark grey fan of tail feathers

[00:24:33] and bright redneck.

[00:24:35] As she walked into the yard,

[00:24:38] she went

[00:24:39] gobble, gobble, gobble.

[00:24:40] When she saw Patty

[00:24:43] and Rufus waiting there,

[00:24:44] she stopped,

[00:24:46] turned her head to one side

[00:24:48] curiously and said,

[00:24:50] Hello.

[00:24:51] I wasn't expecting

[00:24:53] to see you there.

[00:24:56] Patty introduced herself

[00:24:57] and Rufus

[00:24:58] and explained

[00:25:00] what it was they were doing there.

[00:25:03] Do you live here?

[00:25:05] She asked the turkey

[00:25:07] after she told her story.

[00:25:10] The turkey told them

[00:25:12] that yes,

[00:25:12] she lived on this road

[00:25:14] and liked to root

[00:25:15] through the grass

[00:25:16] in all of the front yards

[00:25:18] to find little scraps

[00:25:19] of food.

[00:25:20] Oh, brilliant,

[00:25:22] said Patty.

[00:25:23] Maybe you can help me then.

[00:25:26] Do you know

[00:25:27] if there's any way

[00:25:29] I can get into this house?

[00:25:31] I need to take my place

[00:25:33] on the table

[00:25:33] before Thanksgiving dinner starts.

[00:25:37] Is there a way in

[00:25:39] that you know?

[00:25:41] The turkey looked up

[00:25:43] at the sky

[00:25:43] thoughtfully

[00:25:44] for a few moments,

[00:25:46] considering Patty's question.

[00:25:48] Then she said,

[00:25:51] Unfortunately,

[00:25:53] there's no other door

[00:25:54] than the front one

[00:25:55] which I can't open.

[00:25:57] But,

[00:25:58] she added,

[00:25:59] if you've come this far

[00:26:01] riding on Rufus's back,

[00:26:04] perhaps you can climb on mine

[00:26:06] and I'll fly you

[00:26:07] up to the window.

[00:26:10] Patty the pumpkin pie

[00:26:11] agreed that this was

[00:26:13] an excellent idea.

[00:26:15] She hopped off

[00:26:16] Rufus's back

[00:26:17] and gave him

[00:26:19] a big hug of thanks

[00:26:20] and then climbed up

[00:26:22] onto the turkey's back,

[00:26:24] whose feathers

[00:26:25] were not as soft

[00:26:26] as Rufus's fur,

[00:26:28] but much silkier.

[00:26:31] From through the window

[00:26:32] they heard the sound

[00:26:34] of Martin's mother's voice.

[00:26:37] Martin,

[00:26:38] she called.

[00:26:39] Martin,

[00:26:41] could you get

[00:26:42] the pumpkin pie

[00:26:43] and place it

[00:26:43] in the middle

[00:26:44] of the table,

[00:26:45] please?

[00:26:46] A few moments later

[00:26:48] came the sound

[00:26:49] of Martin's reply

[00:26:51] from somewhere

[00:26:52] back in the house.

[00:26:53] I can't find it

[00:26:55] anywhere,

[00:26:56] he shouted.

[00:26:58] Well,

[00:27:00] I hope we haven't

[00:27:01] forgotten it,

[00:27:02] muttered Martin's mother,

[00:27:04] passing by the window.

[00:27:06] That would be

[00:27:07] a real disappointment.

[00:27:10] And she left

[00:27:11] the room

[00:27:12] to investigate.

[00:27:15] Perfect timing,

[00:27:16] whispered Patty.

[00:27:18] Now's our chance.

[00:27:20] They're waiting for me.

[00:27:22] All right then,

[00:27:24] said the turkey.

[00:27:25] Hold on tight

[00:27:26] to my neck feathers.

[00:27:27] This might be

[00:27:29] a rocky ride,

[00:27:32] Patty did

[00:27:33] as the turkey

[00:27:34] recommended.

[00:27:35] She held on tight

[00:27:37] and with a wild

[00:27:38] flap of her wings

[00:27:39] and a scrabble

[00:27:40] of her legs,

[00:27:42] the turkey

[00:27:42] took off

[00:27:43] into the air.

[00:27:44] Wobbling

[00:27:45] this way

[00:27:46] and that

[00:27:47] until finally

[00:27:48] she landed

[00:27:49] a little unsteadily

[00:27:50] on the windowsill.

[00:27:52] Off you hop,

[00:27:54] the turkey said.

[00:27:56] I can't balance

[00:27:57] here for too long.

[00:28:00] Patty said

[00:28:01] a quick thank you

[00:28:02] to the turkey

[00:28:03] and slipped

[00:28:04] off her back.

[00:28:05] She climbed

[00:28:06] down the curtain,

[00:28:08] scuttled

[00:28:09] across the room

[00:28:10] and climbed up

[00:28:11] the leg

[00:28:12] of the dining table.

[00:28:13] The table

[00:28:15] was beautifully

[00:28:16] decorated

[00:28:17] and set out

[00:28:18] with all kinds

[00:28:19] of wonderful dishes.

[00:28:21] She saw the yams

[00:28:22] and the cornbread,

[00:28:24] the stuffing

[00:28:25] and the candles

[00:28:26] ready to be lit.

[00:28:29] Patty,

[00:28:30] they cried.

[00:28:31] You made it.

[00:28:33] I did,

[00:28:35] she said.

[00:28:36] I knew I would.

[00:28:38] In the middle

[00:28:39] of the table,

[00:28:41] Patty saw

[00:28:42] the empty pie stand

[00:28:43] and she picked

[00:28:44] her way
