In tonight's premium bedtime story for kids, we're going to the bookshop where the books come to life at night. Tonight, Sam decides to begin a miniature library, where anyone can take and leave books as they wish- as long as they bring them back. The books from the miniature library go on the most amazing adventures with their borrowers, and - one warm cosy night - they come back to share their tales. Relax, get sleepy, and letβs begin!

Speaker 1: Hey Abby, here you can listen to this episode in full.

00:00:21
Speaker 1: the supercast link in the show notes. Anyway, here's a
00:00:25
Speaker 1: preview of this very special episode. There is something to
00:00:36
Speaker 1: love about all the little shops in the village of
00:00:39
Speaker 1: Lower Starry Skies, with people always popping in and out
00:00:43
Speaker 1: of where there's a will there's a way to get
00:00:45
Speaker 1: the yarn for their next project, or sitting at the
00:00:48
Speaker 1: colorful tables outside the Dimple Dumpling Cafe, cakes and surprises
00:00:53
Speaker 1: in all shapes and sizes, their secretly hoping to hear
00:00:59
Speaker 1: one of the magic stories they come if a customer
00:01:02
Speaker 1: orders just the right combination of cake and drink. But
00:01:07
Speaker 1: even if they aren't that lucky, they're still happy to
00:01:10
Speaker 1: watch the world go by and tuck into chocolate cake
00:01:13
Speaker 1: and lemon drizzle and scones covered in strawberry jam and cream.
00:01:18
Speaker 1: But it's probably true to say that the very busiest
00:01:22
Speaker 1: of shops is not actually in the village itself. Nope,
00:01:27
Speaker 1: it's halfway up the hill from lower Starry Skies and
00:01:31
Speaker 1: halfway down the hill from Upper Starry Skies. If you
00:01:35
Speaker 1: walk beneath the shade of the trees that line the
00:01:37
Speaker 1: lane passing the church and the school, you'll be sure
00:01:41
Speaker 1: to find the smart red door and smart red front
00:01:45
Speaker 1: of neither up nor down, a magical place that's packed
00:01:50
Speaker 1: from floor to ceiling with books. Sam helps in the
00:01:55
Speaker 1: bookshop at weekends when he isn't at school, and he
00:01:59
Speaker 1: loves time unpacking the new books and finding them homes
00:02:03
Speaker 1: on the shelves. The books with knights and castles and
00:02:08
Speaker 1: princesses being rescued by dragons, of course, go in the
00:02:12
Speaker 1: history section, next to the books about dinosaurs and pirates.
00:02:17
Speaker 1: The books about fairies and mermaids and leprecorns have their
00:02:21
Speaker 1: own special place in an area dedicated to mystical creatures.
00:02:26
Speaker 1: The ones that have neat rows of cupcakes with fancy,
00:02:30
Speaker 1: frothy decorations on top, or cakes in layer after layer,
00:02:35
Speaker 1: or cookies looking so good you can almost smell them,
00:02:39
Speaker 1: or find themselves in the baking section. Sometimes the books
00:02:44
Speaker 1: arrive a little damaged, and Sam is told to put
00:02:47
Speaker 1: these into a box right at the back of the
00:02:50
Speaker 1: shop where nobody goes. This has been going on for months,
00:02:55
Speaker 1: and now there are four boxes filled to overflowing books
00:03:00
Speaker 1: that are bent covers or damaged spines or torn pages.
00:03:05
Speaker 1: They're all still books, crammed with wonderful stories and lovely ideas,
00:03:11
Speaker 1: but the bookshop owner can't sell them because for some reason,
00:03:16
Speaker 1: people want to buy things that look completely perfect. He's
00:03:21
Speaker 1: always thought this a little bit odd. The shelf behind
00:03:24
Speaker 1: the counter is covered in broken ornaments, things like a
00:03:29
Speaker 1: three legged dog, a cottage where the door has fallen off,
00:03:34
Speaker 1: and a tree where all the branches on the left
00:03:37
Speaker 1: stand tall and firm, and all those on the right
00:03:40
Speaker 1: droop to the ground. The bookshop owner sees a lot
00:03:45
Speaker 1: of beauty in these broken things, and he knows the
00:03:48
Speaker 1: books are just as wonderful as the others, even though
00:03:52
Speaker 1: they're a little bit bent or torn. So he's absolutely
00:03:57
Speaker 1: delighted when Sam comes up an idea for the books.
00:04:02
Speaker 1: The nearest library to Lower Starry Skies is a terribly
00:04:06
Speaker 1: long way way. It requires changing buses in a village
00:04:11
Speaker 1: called Sapphire Sands and then continuing all the way to
00:04:16
Speaker 1: bluebell Woods, and even then the library is only open
00:04:20
Speaker 1: a few days a week. This is no good to
00:04:24
Speaker 1: people who need a book in an emergency. You know
00:04:28
Speaker 1: those moments when it's a perfect day for curling up
00:04:32
Speaker 1: with a story and you suddenly realize you're out of books,
00:04:37
Speaker 1: but you have no money left to buy a new one.
