Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Koala Moon, a podcast of

00:00:14

Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime

00:00:20

Speaker 1: a dream. Tonight, we are back in Sleepy Forest with

00:00:26

Speaker 1: a family of teddy Bears. It's a beautiful sunny day

00:00:31

Speaker 1: and they have come up with the grand plan to

00:00:34

Speaker 1: go on a picnic. I can't think of a better

00:00:38

Speaker 1: way to spend a warm afternoon. Can you imagine all

00:00:42

Speaker 1: the lovely things that they can pack to eat and drink?

00:00:46

Speaker 1: Think about the games they might play whilst you're imagining.

00:00:51

Speaker 1: Snuggle down in bed and have a lovely big stretch.

00:00:55

Speaker 1: Breathe nice and slowly and deeply, breathing in and out,

00:01:04

Speaker 1: breathing in and out. Will there be strawberries and cherries

00:01:12

Speaker 1: in their picnic chocolate cake sandwiches? Maybe they've included some

00:01:19

Speaker 1: special drinks too. Let's join them as they set off

00:01:24

Speaker 1: to find the perfect picnic spot, and let's see who

00:01:28

Speaker 1: they meet along the way. This is the Teddy Bear's

00:01:33

Speaker 1: Picnic by Jillian Rogerson. It was a perfect Midsummer's day

00:01:47

Speaker 1: in Sleepy Forest. The flowers were in full bloom, and

00:01:52

Speaker 1: brightly colored butterflies flitted from petal to petal resting now

00:01:57

Speaker 1: and again to bask in the soothing warmth of the sun.

00:02:02

Speaker 1: Fluffy bumblebees chased each other through meadows full of orange

00:02:06

Speaker 1: poppies and towering sunflowers. The air was scented with the

00:02:11

Speaker 1: peaceful aroma of rose and lavender, with an added hint

00:02:16

Speaker 1: of wild mint and rosemary. It was the perfect day

00:02:22

Speaker 1: for slowing down and taking it easy. In the garden

00:02:28

Speaker 1: of a cozy cottage, a family of teddy bears were

00:02:32

Speaker 1: doing just that. The younger teddy bears, Alfie and Zara,

00:02:37

Speaker 1: were lying on their tummies in the soft grass, their

00:02:41

Speaker 1: chins resting on their paws. They were watching a tiny

00:02:46

Speaker 1: ladybird expertly climb a long blade of grass. The ladybird

00:02:53

Speaker 1: reached the top of the blade, opened her ruby red wings,

00:02:58

Speaker 1: and soared elegantly to there was another stalk of grass.

00:03:03

Speaker 1: She landed on the top of it, closed her wings,

00:03:07

Speaker 1: and with a little whoop of joy, she slid down

00:03:11

Speaker 1: the grass. The ladybird reached the ground, waved at the bears,

00:03:16

Speaker 1: and ran over to the first blade of grass and

00:03:19

Speaker 1: started the fun game all over again. The ladybird was

00:03:25

Speaker 1: having a wonderful time on her climbing adventure, and the

00:03:29

Speaker 1: Teddy Bears were having a wonderful time lying in the

00:03:32

Speaker 1: warm grass and watching her, but Teddy Bear's parents were

00:03:38

Speaker 1: also having a relaxing day. Mother Bear was reclining in

00:03:44

Speaker 1: a deck chair and softly looking at the freshly washed

00:03:49

Speaker 1: laundry on the washing line. Her gentle breeze moved through

00:03:54

Speaker 1: the sheets and blankets, making them dance merrily. The soothing

00:04:02

Speaker 1: aroma of linen drifted towards Mother Bear and made her smile.

00:04:09

Speaker 1: She closed her eyes and listened to the sounds around her,

00:04:14

Speaker 1: the children giggling, a gentle breeze whispering through the trees,

00:04:21

Speaker 1: the soft buzz of the bees, and the happy sound

00:04:26

Speaker 1: of Father Bear whistling as he painted the garden fence.

00:04:31

Speaker 1: She let out a long, contented sigh. On the other

00:04:37

Speaker 1: side of the garden, Father Bear had just finished painting

00:04:41

Speaker 1: the last fence panel. He loved painting and found it

00:04:45

Speaker 1: a very RESTful activity. He stood back and looked at

00:04:51

Speaker 1: the fence to make sure he hadn't missed a spot.

00:04:56

Speaker 1: His attention went to the apple trees near the fence,

00:05:00

Speaker 1: where the sun kissed apples dangled like jewels on the branches.

00:05:05

Speaker 1: Some of them were ripe for picking, and Father Bear

00:05:08

Speaker 1: knew they would be delicious. Seeing the scrumptious apples gave

00:05:14

Speaker 1: him an idea. He smiled to himself, this was the

00:05:19

Speaker 1: perfect day for such an outing. He put the lid

00:05:24

Speaker 1: on the painting and popped his brush into a tub

00:05:27

Speaker 1: of liquid to clean it. He jogged lightly over to

00:05:31

Speaker 1: Mother Bear and knelt at her side. He laid his

00:05:35

Speaker 1: paw over hers. Mother Bhaer opened her eyes and smiled

00:05:41

Speaker 1: at her husband. Father Bear said, isn't this a beautiful day?

00:05:49

Speaker 1: Shall we go on a picnic? Mother Bear's face lit

00:05:53

Speaker 1: up in delight, and she said you must have been

00:05:57

Speaker 1: reading my mind, because I was thinking the same thing.

00:06:03

Speaker 1: You tell the children, and I'll get the picnic hamper ready.

00:06:08

Speaker 1: With a spring in her step, Mother Bear headed into

00:06:11

Speaker 1: the cottage. Father Bear went over to the children and

00:06:16

Speaker 1: lay on his tummy next to them. He watched the

00:06:19

Speaker 1: Ladybird's climbing antics for a moment and said he wished

00:06:23

Speaker 1: he could climb a blade of grass. His children chuckled.

00:06:28

Speaker 1: Father Bear said, it's such a lovely day that your

00:06:33

Speaker 1: mother and I have decided to have a family picnic.

00:06:40

Speaker 1: As soon as he said the word picnic. The little

00:06:44

Speaker 1: teddy bears leaped to their feet and jumped up and

00:06:47

Speaker 1: down in joy. Sarah asked if she could take her

00:06:51

Speaker 1: book about Dancing Ponies with her her dragon coloring in

00:06:55

Speaker 1: book and her trumpet. Father Bear wasn't sure why Zoe

00:07:01

Speaker 1: needed her trumpet, but he said yes anyway. Alfhi asked

00:07:06

Speaker 1: if he could bring his skipping rope, his toy robot,

00:07:10

Speaker 1: and his pajamas with alarmers on them. Father Bear wasn't

00:07:15

Speaker 1: sure why Alfie needed his pajamas, but he said yes anyway.

00:07:22

Speaker 1: The children raced into the cottage and began filling their

00:07:25

Speaker 1: backpacks with everything they would need for the picnic. Father

00:07:30

Speaker 1: Bear went into the kitchen and helped Mother Bear with

00:07:34

Speaker 1: the picnic hamper. Together, they made a pile of honey

00:07:39

Speaker 1: sandwiches using slices of soft bread. They chopped vegetables into

00:07:46

Speaker 1: chunks and made delicious dips to go with them. Mother

00:07:51

Speaker 1: and father Bear went into the garden and collected plump

00:07:55

Speaker 1: raspberries and blackberries from the hedgerows. Father Bear remembered the

00:08:01

Speaker 1: apple trees and picked a dozen ripe apples. Bottles were

00:08:07

Speaker 1: filled to the brim with cold water and ice cubes.

00:08:11

Speaker 1: Popped inside to keep the water extra cold. Everything went

00:08:17

Speaker 1: into the picnic hamper. When it was full, Father Bear

00:08:22

Speaker 1: closed the hamper and gave it a satisfied tap. Zara

00:08:28

Speaker 1: and Alphy rushed into the kitchen with their backpacks in

00:08:31

Speaker 1: place and hats on their heads. They asked if it

00:08:36

Speaker 1: was time to go on the picnic. Father Bear picked

00:08:40

Speaker 1: up the hamper and said, yes, it was time to go.

00:08:45

Speaker 1: Mother Bear didn't say anything. She was looking at the

00:08:49

Speaker 1: hamper with a puzzled look on her face. Father Bear

00:08:54

Speaker 1: asked if something was bothering her. I'm not sure. Mother

00:09:01

Speaker 1: Bear replied, I've got a feeling that I've forgotten something,

00:09:06

Speaker 1: but I can't think what. She shook her head and

00:09:10

Speaker 1: said it couldn't be anything important, and they had packed

00:09:13

Speaker 1: plenty of food and drink. The Teddy Bears left their

00:09:18

Speaker 1: cottage and set off on their picnic. Tzara skipped along

00:09:23

Speaker 1: the forest path with her brother. She looked over her

00:09:27

Speaker 1: shoulder and asked, where are we going to have our picnic?

00:09:32

Speaker 1: In the middle of the meadow or at the side

00:09:34

Speaker 1: of the river. I want to go to the park.

00:09:39

Speaker 1: They've got lots of picnic tables there, Alfy said, or

00:09:45

Speaker 1: maybe the big field where there's lots of room to

00:09:48

Speaker 1: run around. Mother Bear considered their suggestions and said they

00:09:54

Speaker 1: all sounded good and she couldn't decide which one to pick.

00:10:00

Speaker 1: The children couldn't either. She suggested they kept on walking

00:10:05

Speaker 1: and see how they felt further along the path. The

00:10:10

Speaker 1: children nodded and continued skipping along. Rays of sunlight slanted

00:10:16

Speaker 1: through the trees and cast flickering shadows across the path.

00:10:23

Speaker 1: Warm summer breezes flowed over the bears and gently ruffled

00:10:28

Speaker 1: their fur. Crickets chirped, and bumblebees buzzed. Birds tweeted happily

00:10:37

Speaker 1: to each other from the tree tops. The teddy bears

00:10:42

Speaker 1: carried on walking. Soon they came to the home of

00:10:48

Speaker 1: one of their friends, a fluffy white rabbit, who was

00:10:51

Speaker 1: sitting outside her burrow. Her bunnies were playing in the

00:10:56

Speaker 1: grass near by. The rabbit waved the bears and asked

00:11:01

Speaker 1: where they were going on a picnic. Father Bear replied,

00:11:08

Speaker 1: what a great idea. The rabbit said, it's the perfect

00:11:14

Speaker 1: day for such a lovely outing. I love sitting on

00:11:18

Speaker 1: a picnic blanket and eating food in the fresh air.

00:11:22

Speaker 1: There's nothing like it. Mother bear put her paw on

00:11:27

Speaker 1: her forehead. A picnic blanket. I've forgotten to bring a blanket.

00:11:36

Speaker 1: She shrugged. Well, there's nothing we can do about that now.

00:11:42

Speaker 1: Our cottage is too far away for us to go

00:11:45

Speaker 1: back for one. I suppose we can sit on the

00:11:48

Speaker 1: grass instead. The white rabbit said they must have a

00:11:54

Speaker 1: picnic blanket, and they could borrow hers. It was enormous

00:11:59

Speaker 1: and the bears would easily fit on it with room

00:12:02

Speaker 1: to spare. Mother Bear said that was a very kind offer,

00:12:09

Speaker 1: and yes, please, they would love to borrow the blanket.

00:12:14

Speaker 1: She had an idea and shared a look with father

00:12:17

Speaker 1: Bear to see if he was thinking the same thing.

00:12:21

Speaker 1: He was, because he said, why don't you and your

00:12:26

Speaker 1: children join us on our picnic. We've got plenty of food.

00:12:32

Speaker 1: The rabbit beamed in delight. She collected her children and

00:12:36

Speaker 1: took them into the burrow to collect the picnic blanket

00:12:40

Speaker 1: and some toys for her children. The rabbit family jumped

00:12:46

Speaker 1: back out a minute later. The bunnies had little backpacks

00:12:50

Speaker 1: with them, and their mother had an enormous blanket tucked

00:12:54

Speaker 1: under her arm. Father Bear took the blanket and placed

00:12:59

Speaker 1: it on top of the hamper. The little bunnies waved

00:13:04

Speaker 1: to Tzara and Alfie and hopped over to them. The

00:13:08

Speaker 1: white rabbit said, I don't know what's in their bags,

00:13:14

Speaker 1: but I did see some pajamas going in there. Father

00:13:18

Speaker 1: Bear laughed and said Alfie had packed his pajamas too.

00:13:24

Speaker 1: The teddy bears continued on walking through the sunlit forest

00:13:29

Speaker 1: with their rabbit friends at their side. Further along, they

00:13:34

Speaker 1: came across another friend. This time it was a squirrel

00:13:38

Speaker 1: who lived in a tree house. When he saw the

00:13:42

Speaker 1: Teddy Bears and the rabbits, the squirrel ran down the

00:13:46

Speaker 1: tree and said hello to them. He asked where they

00:13:50

Speaker 1: were going. Father Bear told him about their picnic plans.

00:13:57

Speaker 1: The squirrel grinned and said he loved picnic food, especially

00:14:03

Speaker 1: the desserts. He rubbed his tummy and said his favorite

00:14:08

Speaker 1: dessert was pecan pie topped with freshly whipped blueberry cream.

00:14:17

Speaker 1: Mother Bear put her paw on her forehead and said, desserts.

00:14:25

Speaker 1: I forgot to pack some desserts. The squirrel said he'd

00:14:31

Speaker 1: made some pecan pies that very morning. He had plenty

00:14:35

Speaker 1: to spare and asked if they would like some. He

00:14:39

Speaker 1: had also whipped up some blueberry cream and they could

00:14:43

Speaker 1: have some of that too. The bears and the rabbits

00:14:47

Speaker 1: said they would love that. Thank you. The squirrel scampered

00:14:54

Speaker 1: up the tree and disappeared into his house. Mother bear

00:15:00

Speaker 1: shared a look with Father Bear. He nodded and smiled

00:15:04

Speaker 1: at her. When the kind squirrel returned with a couple

00:15:10

Speaker 1: of pies and a jug of freshly whipped cream, the

00:15:15

Speaker 1: bears asked him to join their picnic. Father Bear said,

00:15:22

Speaker 1: bring your twin brother too. The squirrel broke into a

00:15:27

Speaker 1: huge smile and thanked them back up the tree. He

00:15:31

Speaker 1: went and returned, this time with his twin brother. His

00:15:35

Speaker 1: twin brother was carrying a guitar. The teddy bears, rabbits,

00:15:42

Speaker 1: and squirrels continued on their journey along the path. They

00:15:47

Speaker 1: felt very peaceful and happy. The sun shone warmly on

00:15:53

Speaker 1: the traveling animals. The fresh air was scented with pine

00:15:57

Speaker 1: trees and a wild herb. Along the way, they met

00:16:03

Speaker 1: other animals who offered them food, drink, and other items

00:16:08

Speaker 1: perfect for a picnic on a sunny day. Her fox

00:16:13

Speaker 1: gave them chocolate chip cookies, popping candy cookies, and banana

00:16:20

Speaker 1: bread still warm from the oven. A woodpecker gave them

00:16:25

Speaker 1: bowls of freshly picked fruit, including scrumptious strawberries and plump plums.

00:16:33

Speaker 1: He also offered them a jar of pickled gerkins, which

00:16:38

Speaker 1: caused father Bear's face to light up. He loved pickled gerkins.

00:16:45

Speaker 1: A couple of chipmunks offered to lend them a selection

00:16:49

Speaker 1: of bat and ball games. When the animals couldn't decide

00:16:54

Speaker 1: which ones to borrow, the chipmunk said they could have

00:16:58

Speaker 1: them all, and an owl gave the animals some board

00:17:03

Speaker 1: games and puzzle books. Mother and father invited all the

00:17:10

Speaker 1: kind animals to join their picnic, and every one they

00:17:14

Speaker 1: asked said yes. More picnic blankets were collected, and some

00:17:21

Speaker 1: folding chairs too. Onwards, the party of picnicers traveled. Some

00:17:29

Speaker 1: one started to sing some cheerful songs and everyone joined in.

00:17:35

Speaker 1: The squirrel's twin brother played his guitar and Zara blew

00:17:40

Speaker 1: on her trumpet. As the happy friends walked along, a

00:17:46

Speaker 1: family of deer stepped out of the trees and asked

00:17:49

Speaker 1: where everyone was going. When Father Bear said they were

00:17:54

Speaker 1: going on a picnic, the biggest deer asked where they

00:17:58

Speaker 1: were going to have the picnic. Father Bear looked at

00:18:02

Speaker 1: Mother Bear. She said they hadn't decided on a place yet.

00:18:08

Speaker 1: The deer said, if I may offer a suggestion, the

00:18:15

Speaker 1: beach is always a wonderful place to have a picnic.

00:18:20

Speaker 1: The young ones can play games in the sand or

00:18:24

Speaker 1: paddle in the ocean, and others can relax in chairs

00:18:28

Speaker 1: and maybe read a book or do a crossword puzzle.

00:18:35

Speaker 1: The bears liked the idea of that and asked the

00:18:38

Speaker 1: other animals what they thought. They all agreed the beach

00:18:44

Speaker 1: was the ideal location for their picnic. The deer family

00:18:49

Speaker 1: were invited to join the picnic too. The deer happily

00:18:55

Speaker 1: accepted the invitation and brought with them beach games and

00:19:00

Speaker 1: some more food, including delicious ice cream, which was eaten

00:19:05

Speaker 1: on the last part of the journey. The picnic procession

00:19:11

Speaker 1: wound through the trees and towards the beach. Soon the

00:19:17

Speaker 1: animals heard the soothing sound of the ocean lapping at

00:19:21

Speaker 1: the shore. They rounded a bend in the path and

00:19:26

Speaker 1: the beach came into view. The golden sands stretched out

00:19:32

Speaker 1: on either side. A few animals were lying on blankets

00:19:38

Speaker 1: and enjoying the gentle heat of the sun. The sun

00:19:44

Speaker 1: glinted off the vast blue ocean and seagulls dipped and

00:19:50

Speaker 1: soared over the water. The teddy bears led the way

00:19:55

Speaker 1: onto the beach and found the perfect spot to have

00:20:00

Speaker 1: their picnic. Blankets were laid out in chairs set up.

00:20:07

Speaker 1: The delicious food was put on the blankets, and cold

00:20:11

Speaker 1: drinks were poured for everyone. When all the food was ready,

00:20:18

Speaker 1: the animals sat down and tucked into the delicious feast.

00:20:24

Speaker 1: One of the bunnies said the food tasted even better

00:20:29

Speaker 1: when it was eaten outside. Everyone agreed. As the animals

00:20:36

Speaker 1: ate their food, they gazed at the gentle waves and

00:20:41

Speaker 1: watched as the water washed gently upon the shore. The

00:20:47

Speaker 1: peaceful sound of the waves mingled with the soft chatter

00:20:53

Speaker 1: coming from the animals. Everyone said it was the perfect

00:20:59

Speaker 1: day for a pink and sharing it with friends made

00:21:03

Speaker 1: it extra special. The youngest animals said they'd had enough

00:21:09

Speaker 1: to eat and asked if they could dip their toes

00:21:12

Speaker 1: in the ocean. Far The bear said he would take them.

00:21:17

Speaker 1: He led the children down to the water's edge and

00:21:21

Speaker 1: kept a watchful eye on the little ones as they

00:21:24

Speaker 1: let the warm water trickle over their feet. Some of

00:21:30

Speaker 1: them decided to play a game with the ocean and

00:21:33

Speaker 1: jumped out of the way. As the water came closer.

00:21:38

Speaker 1: They giggled in delight every time the wave missed, touching

00:21:43

Speaker 1: their toes. Back at the picnic area, some of the

00:21:50

Speaker 1: animals decided to set up games on the beach and

00:21:54

Speaker 1: use the bats and balls that the chipmunks had brought

00:21:58

Speaker 1: with them. The young animals returned from the water's edge

00:22:04

Speaker 1: and asked if they could make sand castles. Buckets and

00:22:10

Speaker 1: spades were produced, and the little animals became absorbed in

00:22:15

Speaker 1: their creations. Alfi made a sand castle and proudly placed

00:22:21

Speaker 1: his toy robot on the top of it. More games

00:22:25

Speaker 1: were played on the beach and every one joined in.

00:22:30

Speaker 1: Running around made the animals hungry, and the rest of

00:22:33

Speaker 1: the picnic food was eaten with full tummies. The animals

00:22:39

Speaker 1: rested on the various blankets and chairs and gazed once

00:22:44

Speaker 1: more at the gentle waves of the ocean washing up

00:22:48

Speaker 1: on the shore. The sun began to move towards the

00:22:53

Speaker 1: horizon and shades of pale orange appeared in the sky.

00:23:01

Speaker 1: Mother Bear noticed that a couple of the younger children

00:23:04

Speaker 1: were yawning. She spoke to Father Bear and asked if

00:23:10

Speaker 1: they should head home soon before the young ones fall asleep.

00:23:16

Speaker 1: Father Bear said it was such a lovely day and

00:23:21

Speaker 1: watching the sunset by the beach would be a wonderful

00:23:25

Speaker 1: way to end it. With a twinkle in his kind eyes,

00:23:31

Speaker 1: he added that if any little ones fell asleep, he

00:23:35

Speaker 1: would carry them home. The sky turned from orange to

00:23:43

Speaker 1: dusky pink. The sun moved closer towards the horizon and

00:23:49

Speaker 1: sent the last of its rays dancing across the undulating

00:23:55

Speaker 1: waves of the ocean. Some of the animals began to

00:24:00

Speaker 1: play RESTful songs on the instruments they had brought with them.

00:24:06

Speaker 1: Missus Bear asked her husband to sing one of his lullabies.

00:24:12

Speaker 1: He had a lovely deep voice, and whenever he sang

00:24:16

Speaker 1: to Tzara and Alfie, they would fall asleep in minutes.

00:24:22

Speaker 1: Father Bhaer chuckled and said he'd be happy to sing,

00:24:27

Speaker 1: but if all the young ones fell asleep, might need

00:24:30

Speaker 1: help carrying them home. Mother Beer smiled and said she

00:24:37

Speaker 1: would help him, and so would the others. Father Bear

00:24:44

Speaker 1: cleared his throat and began to sing. His wonderfully deep

00:24:50

Speaker 1: voice carried across the beach, and those that heard it

00:24:56

Speaker 1: stopped what they were doing and smiled. The picnic animals

00:25:02

Speaker 1: listened to the peaceful tones coming from Father Bhaer, and

00:25:07

Speaker 1: just as he suspected, some of the younger ones began

00:25:11

Speaker 1: to fall asleep. Father beher came to the end of

00:25:16

Speaker 1: his song and received a quiet round of applause. Zara

00:25:23

Speaker 1: asked if she could read her bedtime story and held

00:25:28

Speaker 1: up her book about the dancing ponies. Mother Bhaer said

00:25:33

Speaker 1: that was a great idea. The children who had brought

00:25:38

Speaker 1: pajamas quickly changed into them and sat in front of

00:25:43

Speaker 1: Zara with eager looks on their little faces. Zara began

00:25:49

Speaker 1: her story, and just like her father, she had a soothing,

00:25:55

Speaker 1: calm voice, and it wasn't long before tired little eyes

00:26:01

Speaker 1: began to close. The sun disappeared below the horizon, and

00:26:09

Speaker 1: sways of pink and purple filled the sky. One by one,

00:26:16

Speaker 1: The sparkling stars twinkled interview. Some of the children started

00:26:23

Speaker 1: to count them, but fell asleep before they reached tenth.

00:26:29

Speaker 1: The moon appeared from behind a cloud and cast moonbeams

00:26:34

Speaker 1: across the dark blue ocean. Zarah finished her story, closed

00:26:43

Speaker 1: her book, and yawned. Her little brother was fast asleep

00:26:51

Speaker 1: on the blanket in front of her. She lay next

00:26:55

Speaker 1: to him and closed her eyes. The old animals gazed

00:27:01

Speaker 1: fondly at the sleeping animals. They knew they should be

00:27:06

Speaker 1: heading home soon, but the beautiful sight of the evening

00:27:11

Speaker 1: sky was too magical to miss. Mother Bear leaned against

00:27:19

Speaker 1: Father Beer and said it had been a wonderful day.

00:27:25

Speaker 1: Father Bear agreed and suggested they stay just a little

00:27:31

Speaker 1: bit longer. When the animals of Sleepy Forests returned to

00:27:37

Speaker 1: their homes later on and settled down in their cozy beds,

00:27:44

Speaker 1: they dreamed of the lovely picnic they shared with dear

00:27:49

Speaker 1: friends on a beautiful sunny day in summer.
