[00:04:10] One day, Snowbell's grandmother tells her a story about a friendly yeti who she met years ago but has never seen since.

[00:04:20] Snowbell hopes she will be lucky enough to meet a yeti one day.

[00:04:25] And to her surprise and delight, it's not long before that happens.

[00:04:30] This is The Yeti and the Snow Bear by Gillian Rogerson.

[00:04:34] In a land far, far away, there lived a family of snow bears.

[00:04:49] They looked very much like polar bears, but there was something magical about them.

[00:04:57] The snow bears had black noses, just like polar bears.

[00:05:01] But with a blink of their dark eyes, they could make their noses turn white.

[00:05:09] And once that happened, the snow bears became invisible.

[00:05:15] The magical bears loved making themselves invisible, which probably explains why hardly anyone has ever seen them.

[00:05:23] They weren't the only animals who were hard to find, as the youngest snow bear of the family, Snowbell, was about to find out.

[00:05:34] The snow bear family had been out swimming all afternoon.

[00:05:38] And when they returned home, they decided to snuggle up together inside their beautiful snow house and tell each other's stories.

[00:05:47] Snowbell loved listening to stories, especially ones told by her grandmother, because she knew all the best ones.

[00:05:54] Inside the snow house, Snowbell's father made everyone a hot mug of cocoa and then asked who wanted to tell the first story.

[00:06:04] To Snowbell's delight, her grandmother said she would start the storytelling session.

[00:06:11] Snowbell wrapped her paws around her hot drink and waited for her grandmother to begin.

[00:06:18] Snowbell's grandmother gazed dreamily out of the window.

[00:06:23] She said,

[00:06:25] It was on a day like this when I met a yeti.

[00:06:32] I was about your age, Snowbell.

[00:06:35] The snow was falling in the same fluttering kind of way as it is now.

[00:06:42] And the wind was brisk and it blew some of the snow into small hills.

[00:06:49] As you all know, I love going for a long walk through the snow.

[00:06:54] I can walk for miles and miles some days.

[00:06:59] On that day long ago, my family and I were out for a walk.

[00:07:06] I saw a snow hill ahead of us and I just had to run up to it.

[00:07:11] So up I went.

[00:07:13] When I got to the top, I sat down and slid down the other side.

[00:07:19] When I reached the bottom, I saw the yeti.

[00:07:24] Snowbell had never heard of a yeti before.

[00:07:28] And asked her grandmother what it was.

[00:07:31] Her grandmother explained that the yeti looked a bit like a human being,

[00:07:37] but also like an animal who lived in the snow.

[00:07:40] He had grey fur and was about her size.

[00:07:45] He looked so friendly that they started to chat.

[00:07:49] They played in the snow together for a while,

[00:07:53] but then her family called out for her from the other side of the snow hill.

[00:07:57] She ran halfway up the hill and called back to them to let them know where she was.

[00:08:04] When she looked back, the yeti had gone.

[00:08:08] He'd left his footprints behind in the snow,

[00:08:12] but the snow started to fall and quickly covered them up.

[00:08:19] Snowbell's grandmother smiled softly at the memory.

[00:08:24] She said,

[00:08:25] I'll never forget the yeti and how friendly he was.

[00:08:31] And I'll never forget what his footprints looked like either.

[00:08:37] They were like ours, but his toes were longer.

[00:08:41] I look out for them every time I go for a walk.

[00:08:45] But I've never found them again.

[00:08:49] Maybe one day I will.

[00:08:52] Or maybe you will, Snowbell.

[00:08:55] The thought of seeing the mysterious yeti made the little snow bear smile.

[00:09:02] She very much hoped she would see one.

[00:09:05] She asked the rest of her family if they'd ever seen a yeti.

[00:09:11] No one had, but little Snowbell had a feeling she would see a yeti one day.

[00:09:19] That day came sooner than she thought.

[00:09:24] Two days later, Snowbell was out walking with her family.

[00:09:28] The snow had fallen thickly earlier,

[00:09:32] and the brisk wind had blown some of the snow into little hills.

[00:09:37] Her family decided to take a rest from their stroll

[00:09:41] and to enjoy the picnic they had brought with them.

[00:09:45] Whilst the food was being unpacked,

[00:09:48] Snowbell started to explore the nearby area,

[00:09:52] and she saw a snow hill.

[00:09:54] She ran up it,

[00:09:56] and when she got to the top,

[00:09:58] she sat on her bottom

[00:09:59] and slid down the other side.

[00:10:02] It was great fun.

[00:10:05] Snowbell was about to slide down the hill again,

[00:10:09] but then she spotted something peculiar in the snow.

[00:10:14] Footprints.

[00:10:16] They were about her size,

[00:10:18] but the toe prints were longer.

[00:10:22] Snowbell looked closer

[00:10:24] and wondered if they'd been made by a yeti.

[00:10:28] The little bear looked along the snow-covered ground

[00:10:32] and saw more footprints.

[00:10:34] She followed them

[00:10:36] and walked towards an oak tree

[00:10:38] that had branches heavy with snow.

[00:10:41] When Snowbell reached the tree,

[00:10:44] the footprint suddenly stopped.

[00:10:47] Her little furry face

[00:10:49] wrinkled up in confusion.

[00:10:52] A small giggle came from above her.

[00:10:56] Snowbell looked up at the tree.

[00:10:59] There was so much snow on it

[00:11:01] that she couldn't see past the first few branches.

[00:11:06] Snowbell called out a hello.

[00:11:09] She waited.

[00:11:11] No one replied.

[00:11:14] Perhaps she'd imagined hearing a giggle.

[00:11:18] She looked behind her at the unusual footprints.

[00:11:23] They had disappeared.

[00:11:25] Snowbell shook her head.

[00:11:28] She said to herself,

[00:11:30] What is going on here?

[00:11:33] Footprints don't disappear like that.

[00:11:36] There was another giggle above her.

[00:11:43] Snowbell heard it clearly.

[00:11:45] Someone was playing a fun game with her.

[00:11:50] She smiled.

[00:11:52] She knew a fun game too.

[00:11:56] Very loudly,

[00:11:58] she said,

[00:12:01] If there's nothing else to see here,

[00:12:04] I may as well make myself vanish.

[00:12:07] She turned her black nose white

[00:12:10] and immediately became invisible.

[00:12:15] There was a movement in the tree above

[00:12:18] and bits of snow fluttered down from the branches

[00:12:21] as if someone was moving along them.

[00:12:26] Snowbell stayed as still as she could.

[00:12:30] She heard a soft thud

[00:12:32] as someone landed next to her.

[00:12:36] A voice muttered,

[00:12:38] Where did that polar bear go?

[00:12:40] She was just here.

[00:12:42] Polar bears,

[00:12:44] don't disappear like that.

[00:12:47] Snowbell tried hard not to giggle,

[00:12:50] but she couldn't help herself,

[00:12:52] and a little chuckle came from her.

[00:12:55] She made her nose turn back to black

[00:12:58] and became visible again.

[00:13:01] She said softly,

[00:13:03] Boo!

[00:13:04] I'm right here.

[00:13:07] In front of her stood a young creature

[00:13:10] who looked like a human being,

[00:13:12] but also like an animal.

[00:13:15] He had pale grey fur

[00:13:17] and light brown eyes.

[00:13:20] He had such a kind face

[00:13:22] that Snowbell knew immediately

[00:13:24] that she liked him.

[00:13:27] She asked,

[00:13:28] Are you a yeti?

[00:13:31] He nodded and said,

[00:13:34] How did you make yourself disappear like that?

[00:13:38] I didn't know polar bears could do that.

[00:13:42] Snowbell told him

[00:13:43] she wasn't a polar bear.

[00:13:46] She was a snow bear.

[00:13:49] The little yeti shook his head

[00:13:52] and said there were no such thing as snow bears.

[00:13:56] His grandad had told him once

[00:13:58] that he'd met a snow bear when he was young,

[00:14:01] but no one else had seen the bear

[00:14:03] and some yetis thought

[00:14:05] his grandad had made up the story.

[00:14:09] The yeti said,

[00:14:11] My grandad loves making up stories.

[00:14:15] Sometimes they're real

[00:14:17] and sometimes they're not.

[00:14:19] I wanted to believe his story

[00:14:21] about the snow bear,

[00:14:23] but because no one else

[00:14:25] had ever seen one,

[00:14:26] I didn't think they were real.

[00:14:29] He smiled at Snowbell

[00:14:31] and said,

[00:14:33] I'm glad you are real.

[00:14:35] My name is Littlefoot.

[00:14:39] What's yours?

[00:14:41] Snowbell told him.

[00:14:44] She said her grandmother

[00:14:45] had met a yeti when she was young

[00:14:47] and perhaps

[00:14:49] she had met Littlefoot's grandad.

[00:14:53] Maybe they did meet each other,

[00:14:57] Littlefoot said with a smile.

[00:15:00] Snowbell pointed to the snow

[00:15:03] and asked why his footprints

[00:15:05] had disappeared.

[00:15:08] Littlefoot shrugged

[00:15:10] and said it was just something

[00:15:11] his footprints did.

[00:15:13] It happened with all yetis.

[00:15:16] He asked how she'd made herself invisible

[00:15:19] and Snowbell shrugged

[00:15:22] and said it was just something

[00:15:24] snow bears did.

[00:15:27] Littlefoot asked her

[00:15:29] to do it again

[00:15:30] so Snowbell did so.

[00:15:32] Then she asked him

[00:15:34] to make his footprints disappear again.

[00:15:37] Littlefoot raced around the oak tree

[00:15:40] ten times as fast as he could.

[00:15:43] He left behind dozens of footprints.

[00:15:47] Snowbell watched in amazement

[00:15:49] as each yeti footprint

[00:15:52] completely vanished

[00:15:54] and the snow was smooth again.

[00:15:58] Littlefoot grinned

[00:16:00] and said they should play a game together

[00:16:03] and he knew

[00:16:04] the perfect one.

[00:16:07] Snowbell said she did too.

[00:16:10] At the same time

[00:16:12] they both said

[00:16:14] hide and seek.

[00:16:16] They agreed Snowbell

[00:16:18] should hide first.

[00:16:20] Littlefoot turned

[00:16:21] his face to the tree

[00:16:23] closed his eyes

[00:16:25] and began to count.

[00:16:28] Snowbell moved

[00:16:29] over to the snow hill

[00:16:31] changed the colour

[00:16:33] of her nose

[00:16:34] and made herself invisible.

[00:16:37] When Littlefoot

[00:16:39] had counted to ten

[00:16:40] she saw him

[00:16:42] walking through the snow

[00:16:44] and muttering to himself

[00:16:46] wondering where she'd gone.

[00:16:50] She tried

[00:16:51] very, very hard

[00:16:53] not to giggle

[00:16:54] but she couldn't

[00:16:56] help herself.

[00:16:58] Littlefoot heard

[00:17:00] her giggle

[00:17:00] and ran over to her.

[00:17:02] She became visible again

[00:17:04] and smiled at him.

[00:17:07] He said

[00:17:08] found you

[00:17:09] you're very good

[00:17:11] at hiding

[00:17:12] my turn now.

[00:17:15] Snowbell

[00:17:16] turned around

[00:17:17] closed her eyes

[00:17:19] and counted

[00:17:20] to ten.

[00:17:21] When she turned

[00:17:23] back around

[00:17:24] she saw

[00:17:25] Littlefoot's

[00:17:26] prince in the snow.

[00:17:28] He would be

[00:17:29] easy to find

[00:17:30] she thought

[00:17:31] but before

[00:17:33] she could follow

[00:17:34] his prince

[00:17:34] they started

[00:17:36] to vanish.

[00:17:37] In seconds

[00:17:38] they were

[00:17:40] all gone.

[00:17:42] Snowbell

[00:17:43] began to

[00:17:44] search for him.

[00:17:46] She hadn't

[00:17:47] been looking

[00:17:48] for long

[00:17:48] before she

[00:17:50] heard

[00:17:50] Littlefoot's

[00:17:51] giggle.

[00:17:52] It was a

[00:17:53] funny giggle

[00:17:54] and it made

[00:17:55] her laugh

[00:17:56] too.

[00:17:58] She followed

[00:17:59] the noise

[00:17:59] and found

[00:18:00] the little

[00:18:01] yeti

[00:18:02] hiding

[00:18:02] behind

[00:18:03] a fallen

[00:18:04] log.

[00:18:05] Snowbell

[00:18:06] said

[00:18:07] found

[00:18:08] you.

[00:18:09] I don't

[00:18:10] think we

[00:18:10] should play

[00:18:11] this again

[00:18:12] because we

[00:18:12] keep laughing.

[00:18:14] You've

[00:18:14] got a

[00:18:15] funny

[00:18:15] laugh.

[00:18:18] Littlefoot

[00:18:19] chuckled

[00:18:19] and said

[00:18:20] Snowbell

[00:18:21] had a

[00:18:21] funny

[00:18:22] laugh

[00:18:22] too.

[00:18:23] They

[00:18:24] began

[00:18:25] to laugh

[00:18:26] more

[00:18:26] and more

[00:18:27] and hearing

[00:18:29] the other

[00:18:29] one laugh

[00:18:30] made them

[00:18:31] giggle

[00:18:32] and chuckle

[00:18:33] over

[00:18:34] and over

[00:18:35] again.

[00:18:37] They held

[00:18:38] onto their

[00:18:39] tummies

[00:18:39] as they

[00:18:40] laughed.

[00:18:42] Littlefoot

[00:18:43] laughed so

[00:18:44] much

[00:18:44] that he

[00:18:45] fell over

[00:18:46] and landed

[00:18:48] softly on his

[00:18:49] back in the

[00:18:50] thick snow.

[00:18:51] He kicked

[00:18:52] his little

[00:18:53] legs happily

[00:18:54] in the air.

[00:18:57] Seeing him

[00:18:57] like that

[00:18:58] made Snowbell

[00:19:00] giggle more

[00:19:01] until she

[00:19:02] fell over

[00:19:03] too.

[00:19:05] The

[00:19:05] snowbear

[00:19:06] and the

[00:19:06] yeti

[00:19:07] kicked

[00:19:08] their

[00:19:08] legs

[00:19:09] joyfully

[00:19:09] in the

[00:19:10] air

[00:19:10] and laughed

[00:19:12] and laughed.

[00:19:14] When all

[00:19:15] their laughter

[00:19:16] had come

[00:19:17] out,

[00:19:18] for the

[00:19:18] time being

[00:19:19] at least,

[00:19:21] Snowbell

[00:19:21] asked

[00:19:22] Littlefoot

[00:19:23] if he

[00:19:24] knew

[00:19:24] any other

[00:19:24] games.

[00:19:27] Littlefoot

[00:19:28] asked

[00:19:29] if she'd

[00:19:30] ever made

[00:19:30] rainbow

[00:19:31] snowballs

[00:19:32] before.

[00:19:32] she hadn't

[00:19:34] and asked

[00:19:35] her new

[00:19:35] friend how

[00:19:36] to make

[00:19:37] them.

[00:19:38] The young

[00:19:39] yeti got

[00:19:39] up.

[00:19:41] He held

[00:19:41] his hand

[00:19:42] out to

[00:19:42] Snowbell

[00:19:43] and helped

[00:19:45] her to

[00:19:45] her feet.

[00:19:46] He said,

[00:19:47] We have

[00:19:49] to find

[00:19:49] the rainbow

[00:19:50] snow first.

[00:19:52] When snow

[00:19:52] falls during

[00:19:53] a full moon,

[00:19:54] the moon

[00:19:56] beams

[00:19:56] magically turn

[00:19:57] it into

[00:19:58] different colours.

[00:19:59] But when

[00:20:01] the sun

[00:20:01] shines on

[00:20:02] the snow

[00:20:02] in the

[00:20:03] morning,

[00:20:03] the snow

[00:20:04] turns back

[00:20:05] into its

[00:20:06] normal colour.

[00:20:08] Snowbell

[00:20:09] said,

[00:20:10] Oh,

[00:20:11] I didn't

[00:20:12] know that.

[00:20:13] Can you

[00:20:14] only find

[00:20:15] the magic

[00:20:15] snow at

[00:20:16] night time

[00:20:16] then?

[00:20:18] The

[00:20:19] yeti

[00:20:19] whispered,

[00:20:21] Sometimes

[00:20:22] the rainbow

[00:20:23] snow

[00:20:23] gets covered

[00:20:25] up with the

[00:20:25] other snow

[00:20:26] snow before

[00:20:27] the sun

[00:20:28] reaches it.

[00:20:31] quick enough

[00:20:32] and know

[00:20:33] look,

[00:20:34] you'll find

[00:20:42] Snowbell

[00:20:42] didn't know

[00:20:44] why Littlefoot

[00:20:44] was whispering,

[00:20:45] but she felt

[00:20:46] like she

[00:20:47] should too.

[00:20:48] In a low

[00:20:49] whisper,

[00:20:51] she said,

[00:20:53] I would

[00:20:54] love to see

[00:20:55] the rainbow

[00:20:56] snow,

[00:20:58] Littlefoot

[00:20:59] told Snowbell

[00:21:00] to follow

[00:21:01] him.

[00:21:02] As they

[00:21:03] walked along,

[00:21:05] Snowbell

[00:21:06] stepped in

[00:21:07] the yeti's

[00:21:08] footprints.

[00:21:09] Their feet

[00:21:10] were the

[00:21:10] same size,

[00:21:11] but their

[00:21:12] toes were

[00:21:13] different.

[00:21:15] Snowbell

[00:21:15] pointed the

[00:21:17] double prince

[00:21:18] out to her

[00:21:19] new friend,

[00:21:20] and they

[00:21:20] stopped for a

[00:21:21] moment to

[00:21:22] look at

[00:21:22] them.

[00:21:23] The yeti's

[00:21:24] prince

[00:21:25] disappeared,

[00:21:26] leaving only

[00:21:27] snowbells

[00:21:28] behind.

[00:21:30] Littlefoot

[00:21:31] smiled at

[00:21:32] the snow

[00:21:33] bear and

[00:21:33] said,

[00:21:35] My prince

[00:21:36] will always

[00:21:37] be there

[00:21:37] with yours,

[00:21:38] even if

[00:21:40] we can't

[00:21:41] see them.

[00:21:43] Snowbell

[00:21:44] smiled and

[00:21:45] said that

[00:21:46] was a

[00:21:46] lovely thought.

[00:21:48] They

[00:21:49] reached a

[00:21:50] large rock,

[00:21:52] Littlefoot

[00:21:53] snow

[00:21:54] bear and

[00:21:55] began to

[00:21:56] scoop some

[00:21:57] of the

[00:21:58] top snow

[00:21:58] away.

[00:22:00] Snowbell

[00:22:01] knelt next

[00:22:01] to him

[00:22:02] and did

[00:22:02] the same.

[00:22:04] As they

[00:22:05] scooped the

[00:22:06] snow away,

[00:22:07] the little

[00:22:08] bear started

[00:22:09] to sing a

[00:22:09] song her

[00:22:11] grandmother

[00:22:11] had taught

[00:22:12] her.

[00:22:13] The yeti

[00:22:14] looked at

[00:22:15] her in

[00:22:15] surprise and

[00:22:17] said he

[00:22:17] knew that

[00:22:18] song too.

[00:22:19] His

[00:22:20] granddad

[00:22:21] had taught

[00:22:21] him it.

[00:22:24] They

[00:22:24] decided

[00:22:25] their

[00:22:26] grandparents

[00:22:26] must have

[00:22:28] met all

[00:22:28] those years

[00:22:29] ago and

[00:22:31] imagined them

[00:22:31] singing

[00:22:32] together as

[00:22:34] they played

[00:22:34] in the snow.

[00:22:36] Littlefoot

[00:22:37] and Snowbell

[00:22:39] sang together

[00:22:40] happily and

[00:22:42] continued clearing

[00:22:43] the snow

[00:22:44] away.

[00:22:45] Snowbell was

[00:22:46] having such

[00:22:47] a good time

[00:22:48] that she

[00:22:49] quite forgot

[00:22:50] what they

[00:22:50] were looking

[00:22:51] for.

[00:22:51] until

[00:22:53] Littlefoot

[00:22:54] started to

[00:22:56] whisper

[00:22:56] again.

[00:22:58] Snowbell,

[00:23:00] look,

[00:23:02] there it

[00:23:03] is.

[00:23:05] Snowbell

[00:23:06] gazed

[00:23:07] down in

[00:23:07] wonder at

[00:23:08] the rainbow

[00:23:09] snow beneath

[00:23:11] her paws.

[00:23:13] A wide

[00:23:14] line of

[00:23:15] snow was

[00:23:16] coloured in

[00:23:17] bright shades

[00:23:18] red,

[00:23:19] red,

[00:23:21] yellow,

[00:23:22] green,

[00:23:24] blue,

[00:23:25] indigo,

[00:23:27] and violet.

[00:23:30] Snowbell

[00:23:31] said it

[00:23:32] looked like

[00:23:33] a rainbow

[00:23:33] had drifted

[00:23:34] from the

[00:23:35] sky and

[00:23:36] was having

[00:23:37] a peaceful

[00:23:38] sleep in

[00:23:39] the snow.

[00:23:41] Littlefoot

[00:23:42] said he'd

[00:23:43] never thought

[00:23:44] about the

[00:23:45] rainbow snow

[00:23:46] that way
