Speaker 1: Hi, and welcome back to Cocos Sleep. I hope you're
00:00:14
Speaker 1: enjoying this brand new podcast of original children's bedtime stories
00:00:20
Speaker 1: and sleep meditations designed to make bedtime a dream. If
00:00:26
Speaker 1: you love Coco Sleep, please ask your adult to leave
00:00:30
Speaker 1: a rating and a review, as this will help others
00:00:33
Speaker 1: be able to find it too. With that in mind,
00:00:37
Speaker 1: our story tonight is one where kindness and sharing takes
00:00:41
Speaker 1: center stage. We will follow Theodore, a brave little monkey,
00:00:47
Speaker 1: as he sets off on an adventurous quest to find treasure,
00:00:51
Speaker 1: with only an old, faded treasure map to help him.
00:00:55
Speaker 1: Before I start, let's settle down and get ready for us.
00:01:01
Speaker 1: Hop into bed, pull up your douvet, your blankets and
00:01:05
Speaker 1: close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths in and out.
00:01:13
Speaker 1: Wiggle your fingers and toes. Now, snuggle down and gently smile.
00:01:22
Speaker 1: It's time to relax your busy body and charge up
00:01:26
Speaker 1: your imagination. Imagine sailing across thousands of miles of ocean.
00:01:35
Speaker 1: Imagine landing on the island of a thousand smiles. Imagine
00:01:42
Speaker 1: searching for hidden treasure and what it could be. And
00:01:48
Speaker 1: now I'll begin. A Most Charitable Monkey by Gillian Rogerson
00:02:02
Speaker 1: under the shade of a mango tree. A regal looking
00:02:06
Speaker 1: lion addressed the animals in front of him, as he
00:02:10
Speaker 1: was the king of the jungle. The animals listened carefully
00:02:14
Speaker 1: to every word he said. The king told them about
00:02:18
Speaker 1: a quest which involved traveling many miles over land and
00:02:23
Speaker 1: sea to various islands in search of treasure. The only
00:02:29
Speaker 1: help available would be an old, faded treasure map, which
00:02:33
Speaker 1: the king had found inside a hollow tree. He wasn't
00:02:38
Speaker 1: sure the map was real, but he thought that wouldn't
00:02:41
Speaker 1: stop the adventurous animal who would be brave enough to
00:02:43
Speaker 1: take up the challenge. He waited for someone to step
00:02:48
Speaker 1: up to the challenge. No one moved. The elephants didn't
00:02:54
Speaker 1: like the idea of traveling over the sea. The rhinos
00:02:58
Speaker 1: had never been brave in their life and they weren't
00:03:01
Speaker 1: about to start now, and the jaguars thought the king
00:03:05
Speaker 1: should go himself. The king continued to wait for someone
00:03:10
Speaker 1: to volunteer. Under his stern gaze. The animals bowed their
00:03:16
Speaker 1: heads and looked away and still the king waited. Her
00:03:25
Speaker 1: voice from the back called out, I'll do it. I'll
00:03:29
Speaker 1: be the brave adventurer. The animals turned around to look
00:03:34
Speaker 1: at the one who had spoken so foolishly. It was Theodore,
00:03:40
Speaker 1: the smallest monkey in the jungle. The animals told Theodore
00:03:46
Speaker 1: he was too little for an adventure. Even Theodore's family
00:03:50
Speaker 1: shook their heads at him. The Theodore ignored them. He
00:03:57
Speaker 1: puffed his little chest out and repeated, I'll do it.
00:04:01
Speaker 1: I'll be the brave adventurer. I accept. The King announced loudly,
00:04:10
Speaker 1: thank you, Come forward, little one and collect the treasure map.
00:04:18
Speaker 1: Theodore's bravery suddenly vanished. Now you want me to look
00:04:25
Speaker 1: for the treasure now, the king nodded in answer. The
00:04:31
Speaker 1: animals in front of Theodore stepped to the side to
00:04:34
Speaker 1: allow him through. Theodore moved towards the king on legs
00:04:40
Speaker 1: that shook a little. When he was close enough, the
00:04:45
Speaker 1: King gave him a rolled up piece of parchment. Before
00:04:51
Speaker 1: you go, the King said, let me give you some advice.
00:04:57
Speaker 1: Theodore waited expectantly. The King said, don't come home without
00:05:05
Speaker 1: the treasure, and don't drink the sea water. It's full
00:05:10
Speaker 1: of salt. With these confusing words, the King swiftly turned
00:05:16
Speaker 1: around and strode away. When Theodore was alone with his family,
00:05:22
Speaker 1: they tried to talk him out of his quest, lifting
00:05:27
Speaker 1: his chin. Theodore replied, I can do this, I know
00:05:33
Speaker 1: I can. Trying to look as if he knew where
00:05:37
Speaker 1: he was going, he walked away. Theodore reasoned that if
00:05:43
Speaker 1: he was traveling over land and sea, he would need
00:05:47
Speaker 1: a boat at some point. He made his way to
00:05:51
Speaker 1: the beach and was surprised to see an old wooden
00:05:54
Speaker 1: ship bobbing in the sea not far from shore. The
00:06:00
Speaker 1: captain of the ship was a walrus. He waved a
00:06:04
Speaker 1: flipper at Theodore and told him to come aboard. Theodore
00:06:10
Speaker 1: had swum in the jungle rivers before, but never in
00:06:13
Speaker 1: the sea. He waded into the water and felt the
00:06:18
Speaker 1: current pushing him back and forth. The captain continued to
00:06:23
Speaker 1: wave and told Theodore to hurry before the tide took
00:06:28
Speaker 1: the ship away. Holding the treasure mapp aloft, Theodore quickly
00:06:34
Speaker 1: swam towards the ship as the captain helped him onto
00:06:39
Speaker 1: the vessel. He told Theodore the ship was two hundred
00:06:43
Speaker 1: years old. With a chuckle, the walrus added, I hope
00:06:50
Speaker 1: this fine ship of mine doesn't sink anytime soon. Where
00:06:55
Speaker 1: are we going, my fine young friend. Theodore open the
00:07:00
Speaker 1: map and looked at the nearest island. He informed the
00:07:05
Speaker 1: captain they should head to the island of a thousand smiles.
00:07:11
Speaker 1: The captain said he knew where that was, and it
00:07:14
Speaker 1: would take a full day and night to get there.
00:07:18
Speaker 1: The ship sailed away, leaving the familiar sight of the
00:07:24
Speaker 1: jungle behind them. Theodore wondered if he was doing the
00:07:29
Speaker 1: right thing, but it was too late now. He settled
00:07:33
Speaker 1: himself onto a wooden crate behind the captain and tried
00:07:38
Speaker 1: his very best to be brave. The captain sang sea
00:07:43
Speaker 1: shanties as he steered the ship further and further away.
00:07:49
Speaker 1: His voice was deep and melodic, and Theodore found himself relaxing.
00:07:55
Speaker 1: A little before too long day he gave way to night,
00:08:03
Speaker 1: and twinkling stars appeared in the sky. The captain suggested
00:08:08
Speaker 1: Theodore go to sleep in the hammock below deck. With
00:08:14
Speaker 1: a little bit of difficulty, Theodore climbed into the hammock.
00:08:19
Speaker 1: He didn't think he'd fall asleep, but the gentle rocking
00:08:23
Speaker 1: of the ship and the distant voice of the singing
00:08:27
Speaker 1: walrus had a soothing effect on him. He fell into
00:08:32
Speaker 1: a deep slumber. When he awoke, a sunbeam was streaming
00:08:39
Speaker 1: through a porthole and covering Theodore in its warming light.
00:08:45
Speaker 1: Theodore rolled out of the hammock and went in search
00:08:48
Speaker 1: of the captain. The captain was still steering the ship.
00:08:54
Speaker 1: He gave Theodore a cheery welcome before telling him the
00:08:58
Speaker 1: island he was looking for was straight ahead. The captain
00:09:03
Speaker 1: sailed as close to the island as he could. He
00:09:07
Speaker 1: wished Theodore good luck before telling him to jump overboard
00:09:11
Speaker 1: and swim to the island. He wished Theodore good luck
00:09:16
Speaker 1: before telling him to jump overboard and swim to the island,
00:09:22
Speaker 1: making sure the map stayed dry. Theodore set off swimming.
00:09:28
Speaker 1: As he got closer to the island, he saw a
00:09:32
Speaker 1: group of smiling lemurs waving to him. Theodore reached the
00:09:38
Speaker 1: shore and was soon surrounded by the happy creatures, who
00:09:43
Speaker 1: seemed delighted to see him, with huge smiles on their
00:09:48
Speaker 1: little faces. The lemurs waited for Theodore to speak. He
00:09:54
Speaker 1: told them about his quest. He showed them the treasure
00:09:58
Speaker 1: map and pointed to their island. He asked them if
00:10:03
Speaker 1: there was any treasure on the island that his king
00:10:06
Speaker 1: might like. The lemurs never stopped smiling as they discussed
00:10:12
Speaker 1: the matter between themselves. They concluded the treasure must be
00:10:19
Speaker 1: the everlasting pomegranate, which was located on the highest branch
00:10:25
Speaker 1: of the tallest tree. The lemurs said no one had
00:10:29
Speaker 1: ever been brave enough to climb that high, and if
00:10:33
Speaker 1: Theodore made it up the tree and picked the fruit,
00:10:37
Speaker 1: he was welcome to keep it. When Theodore asked why
00:10:43
Speaker 1: the pomegranate was so valuable, an old lemaur said, the
00:10:49
Speaker 1: legend says, the everlasting pomegranate makes the most delicious pies
00:10:57
Speaker 1: a creature could ever hope to be. And what's more,
00:11:04
Speaker 1: the fruit continually renews itself over and over again, like magic.
00:11:13
Speaker 1: You can eat as much as you like, and you
00:11:17
Speaker 1: will never run out of it. Theodore thought the everlasting
00:11:25
Speaker 1: pomegranate sounded like something the king of the jungle would like,
00:11:30
Speaker 1: so he asked the lemurs to take him to the tree.
00:11:35
Speaker 1: Once there, Theodore climbed the tree and located the orange
00:11:41
Speaker 1: skinned fruit. It was enormous, and it was with some
00:11:47
Speaker 1: difficulty that he plucked it from the branch and carried
00:11:52
Speaker 1: it back to the waiting lemas. The lemurs gazed at
00:11:57
Speaker 1: the fruit in silent wonder, their smiles growing wider by
00:12:03
Speaker 1: the second. Theodore gave the pomegranate to the nearest leama
00:12:10
Speaker 1: so that it could be passed around. The precious fruit
00:12:16
Speaker 1: was moved silently from poor to poor until it came
00:12:21
Speaker 1: back to Theodore. One of the lemurs said to him,
00:12:28
Speaker 1: he must take this back to your king. He will
00:12:32
Speaker 1: be most impressed. Tell him he should make a pie
00:12:37
Speaker 1: with it. Perhaps you could return here one day and
00:12:42
Speaker 1: let us know if the king enjoyed the pie. Theodore
00:12:47
Speaker 1: looked at their friendly faces. They hadn't stopped smiling from
00:12:53
Speaker 1: the moment he had first seen them. He made a decision, said,
00:13:02
Speaker 1: you must keep this fruit. It belongs to you and
00:13:06
Speaker 1: this island. The lemurs shook their heads, but Theodore insisted,
00:13:14
Speaker 1: and when he started to say he should leave, they
00:13:19
Speaker 1: asked him to stay for pomegranate pie. It was an
00:13:24
Speaker 1: offer Theodore couldn't refuse. Theodore chatted to the lemurs while
00:13:31
Speaker 1: the pie was being made. It took hours, but it
00:13:37
Speaker 1: was worth the weight because the pomegranate pie was utterly delicious.
00:13:45
Speaker 1: Every bite melted in Theodore's mouth. The sky turned darker,
00:13:53
Speaker 1: and Theodore said he should be leaving. He glanced towards
00:13:58
Speaker 1: the sea, and he wondered how he was going to
00:14:01
Speaker 1: travel to the next island. The Leamas noticed his dismay
00:14:07
Speaker 1: and invited him to stay for the night. They said
00:14:12
Speaker 1: a friend of theirs would take him onto the next
00:14:15
Speaker 1: part of his journey in the morning. Again, it was
00:14:21
Speaker 1: an offer Theodore couldn't refuse. The Leamas made a bed
00:14:27
Speaker 1: of palm leaves for him to rest on. He lay
00:14:31
Speaker 1: down and looked up at the moon. For a moment,
00:14:37
Speaker 1: he wondered if his family were looking at the moon too.
00:14:42
Speaker 1: He hoped his mum wasn't worrying too much about him.
00:14:48
Speaker 1: The Leamas settled down nearby and began to sing a
00:14:53
Speaker 1: soft lullaby. Even though Theodore couldn't see their face, he
00:15:01
Speaker 1: knew they were smiling. The thought made him smile too.
00:15:08
Speaker 1: The sound of the sea moving back and forth along
00:15:12
Speaker 1: the shore sent feelings of comfort over his little monkey body.
00:15:20
Speaker 1: Theodore fell asleep with a smile still on his face.
00:15:25
Speaker 1: Theodore woke up bright and early the next morning. After
00:15:31
Speaker 1: consulting the treasure map, he saw his next port of
00:15:36
Speaker 1: cool was a place named the Isle of Quiet Chestnut Trees.
00:15:43
Speaker 1: Theodore asked the Leamas if they knew where it was.
00:15:48
Speaker 1: They pointed to the sea and said their friend was
00:15:52
Speaker 1: waiting for him, and he might know where the island was.
00:15:57
Speaker 1: Theodore looked at where they were pointing. He saw a
00:16:01
Speaker 1: small island, which he hadn't noticed before. When the island
00:16:07
Speaker 1: raised its head and smiled over at Theodore, he realized
00:16:12
Speaker 1: it wasn't an island at all. It was a giant
00:16:16
Speaker 1: sea turtle, and it was moving closer to the shore.
00:16:22
Speaker 1: The turtle reached the sand and told him to climb
00:16:26
Speaker 1: aboard his shell. Before he left the island, the leamas
00:16:32
Speaker 1: gave Theodore a slice of pomegranate pie wrapped in a leaf.
00:16:38
Speaker 1: As the monkey and turtle moved away from the Island
00:16:43
Speaker 1: of a Thousand Smiles, Theodore kept waving to the limas
00:16:49
Speaker 1: until he couldn't see them any longer. The turtle headed
00:16:55
Speaker 1: towards the Isle of Quiet Chestnut Trees. When Theodore asked
00:17:01
Speaker 1: him if there was any treasure on the island, the
00:17:05
Speaker 1: turtle said he should talk to the silent sycamore. Theodore
00:17:12
Speaker 1: wasn't sure how he could talk to a tree who
00:17:15
Speaker 1: was silent, but he kept that thought to himself. Some
00:17:21
Speaker 1: time later they reached the Aisle of Quiet Chestnut Trees.
00:17:26
Speaker 1: The sea turtle took Theodore to the beach and lowered
00:17:31
Speaker 1: his back to allow Theodore to slide off with a
00:17:36
Speaker 1: wave of his enormous flipper. The turtle turned around and
00:17:42
Speaker 1: sunk beneath the waves. Theodore looked at his map. There
00:17:49
Speaker 1: was no mention of a sycamore tree, but he would
00:17:53
Speaker 1: do his best to find it. He set off through
00:17:58
Speaker 1: the chestnut tree. Their leaves rustled as if they were
00:18:03
Speaker 1: whispering to each other. He stopped when he came to
00:18:08
Speaker 1: the last of the chestnut trees. He stared out at
00:18:13
Speaker 1: a field in front of him and spotted something in
00:18:17
Speaker 1: the distance. It looked like a tree of some sort.
00:18:24
Speaker 1: Theodore set off walking. As he got closer to the tree,
00:18:31
Speaker 1: he saw it was a solitary sycamore tree. Remembering the
00:18:38
Speaker 1: sea turtle's words, when Theodore reached the tree, he began
00:18:44
Speaker 1: to talk to it. He told the tree about his
00:18:48
Speaker 1: quest and the happy lemurs. He soon fell silent, feeling
00:18:55
Speaker 1: a little foolish because he was talking to a tree.
00:19:00
Speaker 1: A deep voice came from within the tree. You are
00:19:07
Speaker 1: having quite the adventure, little monkey. It has been a
00:19:12
Speaker 1: long time since anyone has spoken to me. Would you
00:19:18
Speaker 1: mind talking some more? Please tell me all about yourself
00:19:25
Speaker 1: Theodore told the tree about his family and all the
00:19:29
Speaker 1: animals who lived in the jungle. The tree asked him
00:19:34
Speaker 1: questions now and again. When Theodore had finished talking, he
00:19:41
Speaker 1: asked the tree why he was out here on his
00:19:44
Speaker 1: own alas the farmer who planted me here moved away
00:19:52
Speaker 1: from the island before he could plant any more sycamores.
00:19:59
Speaker 1: A thought came to Theodore, and he asked, do you
00:20:05
Speaker 1: know if the farmer left any sycamore seeds behind? The
00:20:11
Speaker 1: tree didn't, so Theodore decided to explore the island. It
00:20:18
Speaker 1: took him a while, but he finally came across a
00:20:22
Speaker 1: small shed. Inside he found a bag of sycamore seeds.
00:20:30
Speaker 1: Theodore wasn't sure if the seeds would be any good,
00:20:35
Speaker 1: but he took them anyway. He went back to the
00:20:39
Speaker 1: tree and showed him the seeds. Next, the monkey planted
00:20:47
Speaker 1: them around the field. He collected some water from a stream,
00:20:53
Speaker 1: and he gave the seeds a good watering. Night fell.
00:21:00
Speaker 1: In his deep voice, the sycamore tree sang a soothing
00:21:05
Speaker 1: lullaby to the seeds. The sound of the tree's voice
00:21:11
Speaker 1: made Theodore fall asleep too. Theodore stayed on the island
00:21:17
Speaker 1: for a few days, he watered the seeds every day
00:21:23
Speaker 1: and chatted with the tree. The slice of everlasting pomegranate
00:21:29
Speaker 1: pie was more than enough food for the little monkey.
00:21:36
Speaker 1: Before too long, the green shoots of many trees began
00:21:41
Speaker 1: to show. The sycamore tree said to Theodore, thank you
00:21:48
Speaker 1: for planting these new trees. I shall soon have plenty
00:21:55
Speaker 1: of company. Now it's time for you to continue you
00:22:00
Speaker 1: on your journey. The giant sea turtle was waiting by
00:22:08
Speaker 1: the shore to take Theodore away. As they set off,
00:22:14
Speaker 1: Theodore realized he hadn't looked for any treasure on the island,
00:22:20
Speaker 1: but somehow it didn't seem important anymore. The next island
00:22:27
Speaker 1: Theodore visited was inhabited by bears who were no higher
00:22:33
Speaker 1: than Theodore's knees. When he asked them if there was
00:22:38
Speaker 1: any treasure on the island, they took him to a
00:22:42
Speaker 1: cave and told him about a rainbow crystal which was
00:22:47
Speaker 1: tucked away down a tunnel. The bears said no one
00:22:53
Speaker 1: was brave enough to go into the tunnel, but if
00:22:58
Speaker 1: Theodore had the courage to do so, he could keep
00:23:02
Speaker 1: the gem. Their looks were so hopeful that Theodore agreed
00:23:08
Speaker 1: to look for the gem. Immediately. It didn't take him
00:23:13
Speaker 1: long to find the beautiful item. When he showed the
00:23:18
Speaker 1: crystal to the bears, their faces were full of delight
00:23:24
Speaker 1: and wonder. One of them told Theodore about the legend
00:23:30
Speaker 1: of the rainbow crystal, and if it was placed in
00:23:34
Speaker 1: a certain tree just before the moon rose, the moon
00:23:39
Speaker 1: would shine on the gem, casting thousands of rainbow colored
00:23:45
Speaker 1: moonbeams across the sand. A thought came to Theodore. With
00:23:53
Speaker 1: help from the bears, he found the right tree, climbed it,
00:23:59
Speaker 1: and placed the gem in the correct place. While waiting
00:24:04
Speaker 1: for the moon to appear, he shared his never ending
00:24:09
Speaker 1: pomegranite pie with the bears, who agreed it was the
00:24:15
Speaker 1: most delicious pie they had ever eaten. Not long after
00:24:22
Speaker 1: the moon had appeared, its light hit the rainbow crystal,
00:24:28
Speaker 1: sending colored beams of many hues cascading across the sands
00:24:34
Speaker 1: and out over the sea. Theodore and the bears lay
00:24:40
Speaker 1: on the sand and let the magical sight of the
00:24:44

00:25:24
Speaker 1: and asked him to think again. Theodore did. Then he said,
00:25:33
Speaker 1: I discovered the journey is the best part of any adventure. Also,
00:25:43

00:26:27
Speaker 1: him than ever before.
