00:00:10

Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Kuala Moon, a podcast of

00:00:14

Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime

00:00:19

Speaker 1: a tree. You are right in time to hear the

00:00:23

Speaker 1: latest in the brilliant Jupiter Twins series. Last time we

00:00:27

Speaker 1: joined them, they were helping out a friendly griffin called Gwendolyn.

00:00:31

Speaker 1: Tonight's story is a little bit more relatable. We are

00:00:35

Speaker 1: meeting up with Lily and Jake on a shopping trip.

00:00:38

Speaker 1: It's the last week of the summer holidays and they're

00:00:41

Speaker 1: soon heading back to school. They can't wait, and they

00:00:46

Speaker 1: need to prepare. They need their stationery, their spell books,

00:00:51

Speaker 1: and a magical companion to accompany them back to the

00:00:54

Speaker 1: Leora Academy, so they decide to go to the cobbled

00:00:59

Speaker 1: twist streets of York. Snuggle down now and relax as

00:01:05

Speaker 1: I begin Jupiter Twins Back to the Leora Academy by

00:01:11

Speaker 1: Luke Prendergast, Lily and Jake. The Jupiter Twins had been

00:01:21

Speaker 1: enjoying their summer holidays tremendously. Six weeks had passed since

00:01:26

Speaker 1: they'd last been at the Leura Academy of Magic hidden

00:01:29

Speaker 1: beneath the city. Instead, they'd been at home with their parents,

00:01:34

Speaker 1: using the magic they'd learned the previous year at school

00:01:37

Speaker 1: to help out in all kinds of ways. With a

00:01:40

Speaker 1: simple spell, they had gathered up the clumps of grass

00:01:43

Speaker 1: that got left on the lawn behind the lawnmark with

00:01:47

Speaker 1: a wave of their arms. They'd folded clothes and washed dishes,

00:01:51

Speaker 1: and scrubbed the knives and forks until they shone brand new.

00:01:55

Speaker 1: Their parents were both delighted with their magical abilities. There

00:02:00

Speaker 1: was a real blessing having a couple of young magicians

00:02:02

Speaker 1: hanging around the house, they said. When they weren't helping

00:02:07

Speaker 1: their parents, the Jupiter twins spent their time relaxing and

00:02:11

Speaker 1: playing games. Lily was glad to be back in her

00:02:14

Speaker 1: room with her jampacked bookshelf, rereading some of her favorite stories,

00:02:19

Speaker 1: and in the afternoons she and Jake would go out

00:02:22

Speaker 1: to climb trees with their friends. They were having a

00:02:26

Speaker 1: wonderful time on holiday, but sometimes when they were tucked

00:02:31

Speaker 1: up in bed, they would admit to each other that

00:02:33

Speaker 1: they were missing school too. They couldn't wait to get

00:02:37

Speaker 1: back there and start learning more magic. One morning, towards

00:02:42

Speaker 1: the end of the holidays, the twins were sat on

00:02:44

Speaker 1: their bedroom floor building a huge castle out of tiny

00:02:48

Speaker 1: building blocks. They were very pleased with how it had

00:02:51

Speaker 1: turned out. It boasted several towers and a large courtyard,

00:02:57

Speaker 1: and a bright blue moat circling its stone walls. Jake

00:03:02

Speaker 1: was just fixing the final battlement to a turret when

00:03:05

Speaker 1: their bedroom door opened and their mum walked in. She

00:03:09

Speaker 1: stood in the middle of the room, as she often did,

00:03:12

Speaker 1: with one hand on her hip. In the other hand,

00:03:15

Speaker 1: she held a piece of paper. What an impressive castle,

00:03:21

Speaker 1: she said, looking down at their handiwork and smiling. Then

00:03:25

Speaker 1: a small frown appeared on her forehead. But I think

00:03:30

Speaker 1: it's missing something, she added, What, asked Lily? Inspecting the

00:03:36

Speaker 1: castle all over, she couldn't see that they'd missed anything.

00:03:41

Speaker 1: Their mum pointed a finger at the front of the castle.

00:03:45

Speaker 1: It's missing a gate, she said, How are all the

00:03:49

Speaker 1: little people supposed to get in? Oh you're right, cried Jake, laughing.

00:03:56

Speaker 1: Their mum was always so good at spotting things that

00:03:59

Speaker 1: they could see. He gave the front of the castle

00:04:03

Speaker 1: a quick tap, and a wooden gate appeared, complete with

00:04:07

Speaker 1: metal hinges and a perfect iron pork colors that could

00:04:11

Speaker 1: be lifted up and down. There we go, Jake said,

00:04:15

Speaker 1: that's better. What's that, asked Lily, pointing at the piece

00:04:21

Speaker 1: of paper in their mum's hand. This, she replied, brandishing

00:04:26

Speaker 1: the paper in the air, is a letter from your school.

00:04:31

Speaker 1: A letter from their school. Now their mum had their

00:04:35

Speaker 1: undivided attention. What does it say, the twins asked, bubbling

00:04:40

Speaker 1: with excitement. Their mum cleared her throat and, taking a

00:04:44

Speaker 1: deep breath, began to read the letter out loud. Dear

00:04:50

Speaker 1: Lily and Jake, Jupiter, in a few days time, he

00:04:54

Speaker 1: would be returning to the Leora Academy to embark upon

00:04:58

Speaker 1: another year of magical learning. At the end of this letter,

00:05:03

Speaker 1: you will find a list of items that you will

00:05:05

Speaker 1: need to ensure you have prepared for the coming year,

00:05:09

Speaker 1: including new books and stationery. As you will know, you

00:05:14

Speaker 1: have now reached the age at which you are entitled

00:05:17

Speaker 1: to bring with you a magical companion, whether that be

00:05:21

Speaker 1: animal or vegetable, that can live with you in your dormitories.

00:05:26

Speaker 1: I advise you choose wisely. We look forward to welcoming

00:05:31

Speaker 1: you back soon. The letter was signed by their head teacher,

00:05:35

Speaker 1: Dr Howard, and when she was finished speaking, the twins'

00:05:39

Speaker 1: mother waved the list in the air well. She said,

00:05:44

Speaker 1: you heard what Dr Howard wrote in her letter. We've

00:05:48

Speaker 1: got to make sure we've got all the supplies you

00:05:51

Speaker 1: too will need for going back to school. We'll go

00:05:54

Speaker 1: to York this afternoon. That's the best place to buy it.

00:05:58

Speaker 1: All time to get ready. We'll leave in twenty minutes,

00:06:04

Speaker 1: and with that she walked out of the door. Lily

00:06:07

Speaker 1: and Jake could barely contain their excitement. Not only was

00:06:12

Speaker 1: it almost time to head back to school, but they

00:06:15

Speaker 1: also got to take a trip to York, a city

00:06:18

Speaker 1: they traveled to on the train, wasting not a single moment.

00:06:23

Speaker 1: They brushed their teeth, packed their bags, tied their shoelaces

00:06:28

Speaker 1: up nice and tight, and were stood waiting by the

00:06:31

Speaker 1: front door before twenty minutes was even up. My my

00:06:36

Speaker 1: said their mum. I'm very impressed. Okay, then off we go.

00:06:43

Speaker 1: They walked to the train station and waited, busy with

00:06:47

Speaker 1: anticipation for the train to arrive. When it did, they

00:06:51

Speaker 1: jumped on and got a table seat and watched out

00:06:54

Speaker 1: the window as the houses flew past and the gardens

00:06:58

Speaker 1: with swing sets and dogs running around in circles. They

00:07:02

Speaker 1: passed over a bridge and from up above they saw

00:07:06

Speaker 1: the streets flowing with a stream of cars so small

00:07:10

Speaker 1: they looked like toys. When they reached York, Lily and

00:07:15

Speaker 1: Jake's mum led them through the cobbled streets, past all

00:07:18

Speaker 1: the shops and cafes and restaurants, and then down a narrow,

00:07:23

Speaker 1: paved staircase that the twins didn't notice until they were

00:07:27

Speaker 1: already on it. Those steps have had a special charm

00:07:33

Speaker 1: cast upon them, their mum told them as they walked down.

00:07:37

Speaker 1: You can't find them unless you already know they're there.

00:07:43

Speaker 1: They emerged into a wide, cobbled square that might have

00:07:46

Speaker 1: been the same as any other square in York, except

00:07:51

Speaker 1: that the shops around the edges were all magical shops

00:07:55

Speaker 1: selling all kinds of wonderful things like caudron and wands

00:08:01

Speaker 1: and broomsticks and all sorts of unimaginable ingredients for making

00:08:07

Speaker 1: potions and casting mysterious spells. First of all, said there, m'am,

00:08:15

Speaker 1: we need to get you some new bits of uniform.

00:08:19

Speaker 1: You've both grown so much over the summer that some

00:08:22

Speaker 1: of your clothes don't fit you any more. She led

00:08:26

Speaker 1: them down to the doorway of a small dark shop

00:08:30

Speaker 1: inside The walls were lined with so many clothes, soft

00:08:35

Speaker 1: woolen robes, crisp cotton shirts, pointed felt hats that the

00:08:41

Speaker 1: air in the room felt muffled from the mass of clothes.

00:08:46

Speaker 1: At the back of the shop appeared a little man

00:08:49

Speaker 1: with a mass of curly gray hair, holding a length

00:08:53

Speaker 1: of measuring tape and gripping a handful of clothes pins

00:08:57

Speaker 1: in his teeth. Hello, he said, how can I help you?

00:09:03

Speaker 1: The twins ma'am explained that they were here for some

00:09:07

Speaker 1: new school clothes. Jake needed a new cloak, and Lily's

00:09:12

Speaker 1: witches hat, which she'd had since her first year of school,

00:09:16

Speaker 1: was finally looking a bit too worn and threadbare, so

00:09:20

Speaker 1: needed replacing certainly. The man said, to begin, we will

00:09:27

Speaker 1: need to take your sizes, and with a flourish he

00:09:31

Speaker 1: threw his measuring tape up into the air. For a

00:09:35

Speaker 1: few moments, it hung there before snaking through the air

00:09:40

Speaker 1: towards the twins. First, it measured around Jake's shoulders before

00:09:46

Speaker 1: flying over to Lily and wrapping snugly around her forehead.

00:09:52

Speaker 1: Watching the magiced measuring tape flying around the shop filled

00:09:57

Speaker 1: both of the twins up with a sense of wonder

00:10:01

Speaker 1: they really couldn't wait to get back to school. Once

00:10:06

Speaker 1: the measuring was complete, the man showed Jake and Lily

00:10:10

Speaker 1: all of the options in their size. Jake tried on

00:10:15

Speaker 1: a dark blue cloak, then a dark red one, before

00:10:20

Speaker 1: deciding after all that he preferred a bottled green cloak,

00:10:24

Speaker 1: which tied at the throat with a silver string. Lily

00:10:29

Speaker 1: chose a very elegant felt hat with a long blue

00:10:33

Speaker 1: feather sticking out of the top. The shopkeeper assured them

00:10:38

Speaker 1: he had personally plucked the feather from the plumage of

00:10:42

Speaker 1: a rare Arctic bird, which had the power to freeze

00:10:46

Speaker 1: water with just a flap of its wings. If you

00:10:52

Speaker 1: wave the feather over a glass of apple juice, he

00:10:55

Speaker 1: told her, it's as good as putting it in the fridge.

00:11:00

Speaker 1: Very happy with their purchases, the Jupiter twins went back

00:11:04

Speaker 1: out to the square with their mum. Where to next,

00:11:07

Speaker 1: they asked her, next up, she said, putting on her

00:11:12

Speaker 1: glasses and inspecting the shopping list. We need to get

00:11:17

Speaker 1: you some stationery, and she led them to a shop

00:11:21

Speaker 1: across the square with a bright purple sign that read

00:11:24

Speaker 1: Parchment and Quills. They opened the door and a bell chimed,

00:11:32

Speaker 1: causing a tall woman with purple lipstick and a great

00:11:36

Speaker 1: big smile to materialize as if from nowhere. Welcome to

00:11:42

Speaker 1: the stationery shop, she said, How can I help you?

00:11:47

Speaker 1: We've got all sorts of magical, marvelous offers on at

00:11:51

Speaker 1: the moment, including invisible ink that only reveals itself if

00:11:57

Speaker 1: you whisper the right password, and a pencil case that

00:12:01

Speaker 1: can store over a hundred pencils but weighs no more

00:12:06

Speaker 1: than a feather. The twins mum explained to the woman

00:12:11

Speaker 1: that they needed to look at the notepads since they

00:12:14

Speaker 1: were heading back to school and would need somewhere to

00:12:17

Speaker 1: write everything down that they'd learned. Ah. Yes, the woman said,

00:12:23

Speaker 1: blinking down at them kindly, we have just the thing.

00:12:29

Speaker 1: They followed the woman across the shop to a wall

00:12:33

Speaker 1: lined with notepads of many different shapes, sizes, and colors.

00:12:39

Speaker 1: Lily pointed at one that was in the shape of

00:12:42

Speaker 1: a crescent moon. Ah, sighed the woman. Our lunar pad.

00:12:50

Speaker 1: It waxes and wanes with the moon. A marvelous bit

00:12:55

Speaker 1: of magic, but a little inconvenient if you need to

00:12:59

Speaker 1: drop something down on a new moon and discover it's

00:13:03

Speaker 1: disappeared altogether. The shopkeeper told them that the absolute best

00:13:09

Speaker 1: seller for kids returning to Magic School that September was

00:13:14

Speaker 1: a notepad that automatically filed the notes you made according

00:13:19

Speaker 1: to school subject. It can even tell which notes haven't

00:13:25

Speaker 1: quite gone into your memory well enough, she told them,

00:13:29

Speaker 1: and places them at the front of the notepad to

00:13:33

Speaker 1: help you when the time comes for revision. They all

00:13:38

Speaker 1: agreed that this was the perfect notepad to buy. Jake

00:13:43

Speaker 1: chose a dark green one to go with his cloak,

00:13:47

Speaker 1: and Lily chose one of an icy blue, which would

00:13:51

Speaker 1: go just perfectly with her new hat. They stored their

00:13:55

Speaker 1: new notebooks in their bags, said thank you to the

00:13:59

Speaker 1: station shopkeeper, and went back out to the square. Last up,

00:14:06

Speaker 1: said the twins Mum, inspecting her list once more, we

00:14:10

Speaker 1: need to go to the bookstore. You've got a couple

00:14:14

Speaker 1: of books to get. She led them across the square

00:14:19

Speaker 1: and they stepped into a little shop. The air inside

00:14:23

Speaker 1: smiled of old parchment, rich and woody, and golden. Moats

00:14:29

Speaker 1: of dust were suspended in the air above them. The

00:14:34

Speaker 1: walls stretched up higher than they could see, and every

00:14:38

Speaker 1: inch of every wall was covered with rows and rows

00:14:43

Speaker 1: of books. Their leather spines gleaming softly in the dim light.

00:14:49

Speaker 1: Neither Lily nor Jake could quite believe that such a

00:14:53

Speaker 1: room could fit inside the tiny building. They'd stepped into

00:14:56

Speaker 1: magic or no magic. But as they stared upwards in awe,

00:15:02

Speaker 1: a sound distracted them, a rattling and a rumbling. Then

00:15:09

Speaker 1: they saw where the sound was coming from. Above them,

00:15:14

Speaker 1: a box like contraption descended steadily, and in it stood

00:15:19

Speaker 1: an old lady with thin, gold rimmed glasses and a

00:15:24

Speaker 1: puff of hair like a cloud. Hello, she said, Welcome

00:15:31

Speaker 1: to my bewitched bookstore. She patted the metal rail of

00:15:35

Speaker 1: the contraption she stood in. This is my machine that

00:15:40

Speaker 1: lets me get all the way to the top of

00:15:42

Speaker 1: the book tower. Very important for a little woman like me.

00:15:48

Speaker 1: She smiled at them very kindly. Now, how can I

00:15:53

Speaker 1: help you? We have every book you could possibly imagine,

00:15:58

Speaker 1: and if we don't have it for you, well we'll

00:16:02

Speaker 1: magic it up. Lily's eyes grew wide with excitement. There

00:16:07

Speaker 1: was nothing she loved more than a good book, and

00:16:12

Speaker 1: this was the most wonderful place she'd ever laid eyes on.

00:16:17

Speaker 1: The twins Mum explained that they had come to purchase

00:16:21

Speaker 1: the books the students required for their next year at school,

00:16:25

Speaker 1: and handed the bookseller the list. The woman squinted at

00:16:29

Speaker 1: it through her glasses and then gave a happy nod. Oh, yes,

00:16:36

Speaker 1: she said, we've got all of these. She looked at

00:16:41

Speaker 1: Jake and Lily. Well hop in you two, she said,

00:16:46

Speaker 1: let's go and find them. They didn't need telling twice.

00:16:52

Speaker 1: The Jupiter twins jumped into the contraption beside the bookseller,

00:16:56

Speaker 1: and once she'd made sure they were securely in, she

00:17:00

Speaker 1: gave the rail two taps with her finger and said,

00:17:04

Speaker 1: off we go, and with that they began to travel upwards.

00:17:11

Speaker 1: In spite of all the rattling, it was a surprisingly

00:17:15

Speaker 1: smooth ride. Jake thought it was almost as good fun

00:17:19

Speaker 1: as riding his broom. Book spines flew past them in

00:17:24

Speaker 1: a blur of color, and soon they came to a

00:17:28

Speaker 1: stop at a shelf way up high. Here we are,

00:17:33

Speaker 1: said the woman first on the list, Seeing in the dark,

00:17:39

Speaker 1: there it is. She pointed at a book by Jake's shoulder, which,

00:17:44

Speaker 1: upon hearing its name, had opened three bright blue eyes

00:17:48

Speaker 1: and started staring at them. Go on, then, the bookseller said, encouragingly,

00:17:55

Speaker 1: seeing that Jake was a little nervous take it, Jake

00:18:00

Speaker 1: reached out and plucked the book off the shelf. He

00:18:04

Speaker 1: put it in a basket on the side of the

00:18:06

Speaker 1: moving contraption. When the book was laid down, all its

00:18:11

Speaker 1: eyes closed, it seemed to be sleeping quite heavily. After that,

00:18:19

Speaker 1: they flew around the Bewitched bookstore, finding all the other

00:18:23

Speaker 1: books on the list, and at last arrived back at

00:18:27

Speaker 1: the floor where the Jupiter twins mum was waiting for them.

00:18:32

Speaker 1: Did you find them all? She asked them. Oh yes,

00:18:37

Speaker 1: said Lily, we got all of the books on the list,

00:18:41

Speaker 1: and also I picked up one more. She showed her mum,

00:18:45

Speaker 1: a book of fairy tales. Please can I have this

00:18:48

Speaker 1: one too? Her mum laughed and said that was quite

00:18:53

Speaker 1: all right, and with great delight Lily tucked the book

00:18:57

Speaker 1: of fairy Tales into her bag alongside the other books.

00:19:02

Speaker 1: They thanked the bookseller and stepped back out into the square.

00:19:07

Speaker 1: Their mum sighed and slapped her hands together as though

00:19:11

Speaker 1: she were brushing dust from them, which was what she

00:19:15

Speaker 1: always did when she came to the end of a task.

00:19:19

Speaker 1: Oh kay, then she said, that's us all done. Come on,

00:19:25

Speaker 1: you two, let's head home before she'd even finished speaking,

00:19:31

Speaker 1: She turned away and begun to head towards the narrow

00:19:34

Speaker 1: stone staircase that would lead them back out into the

00:19:38

Speaker 1: non magical part of the city of York. But she'd

00:19:42

Speaker 1: only made it a few steps when suddenly both her

00:19:46

Speaker 1: children were on her, Jake hanging off the sleeve of

00:19:50

Speaker 1: her right arm and Lily hanging off the sleeve of

00:19:53

Speaker 1: her left arm. No, ma'am, they cried, We're not done yet.

00:20:00

Speaker 1: She slowed her steps and looked at them, Frowning a little.

00:20:05

Speaker 1: She passed her eyes over the list again and said, yes,

00:20:10

Speaker 1: we are. There's nothing left on the list. What is

00:20:14

Speaker 1: there left to do? She looked at the twins quizzically.

00:20:19

Speaker 1: The Jupiter twins explained to their mum that doctor Howard's

00:20:24

Speaker 1: letter had added that they were allowed this year to

00:20:28

Speaker 1: bring a magical companion to school if they wanted, which

00:20:32

Speaker 1: they certainly did. Oh, of course, their mum said, tapping

00:20:38

Speaker 1: her forehead, I'd completely forgotten. We absolutely must find you

00:20:45

Speaker 1: each a companion to take with you. So, for the

00:20:50

Speaker 1: final time, the Jupiter twins mum led them across the

00:20:54

Speaker 1: cobbled square and into the pet emporium, which was filled

00:20:59

Speaker 1: with all all kinds of magical life, both animal and vegetable.

00:21:06

Speaker 1: She told Jake and Lily to head off and choose

00:21:09

Speaker 1: a companion each. The twins wandered around the emporium, looking

00:21:15

Speaker 1: around at all of the creatures, cats and frogs, and

00:21:20

Speaker 1: enchanted flowers, magicians rabbits and crafty cats, and trees that

00:21:27

Speaker 1: grew magical ingredients. It took them quite a while to choose,

00:21:33

Speaker 1: but eventually they returned to where their mum was waiting

00:21:37

Speaker 1: for them at the front of the emporium, leafing through

00:21:40

Speaker 1: a magazine about how to care for your new pet unicorn. Well,

00:21:46

Speaker 1: she said, seeing them return. Have you both chosen your

00:21:50

Speaker 1: new companions? Go on and show me. Then. First of all,

00:21:57

Speaker 1: Lily showed her mum what she had chosen. It was

00:22:00

Speaker 1: a bright green slug that fitted perfectly in the palm

00:22:05

Speaker 1: of her hand. And best of all, she told her mum,

00:22:09

Speaker 1: he knows how to talk. Look, and she asked the

00:22:13

Speaker 1: slug to say hello to her mum. Hullo, said the slug. Hello, slug,

00:22:21

Speaker 1: said the Jupiter twins mum, before she turned to Jake

00:22:25

Speaker 1: and you, Jake, what have you found? From behind his back,

00:22:31

Speaker 1: Jake withdrew a magical cabbage plant growing in a yellow

00:22:36

Speaker 1: ceramic pot. Its leaves were extra bushy and their edges

00:22:42

Speaker 1: seemed to twinkle with starlight. This cabbage has magical healing properties,

00:22:49

Speaker 1: he told her. Just eat a leaf and it will

00:22:53

Speaker 1: make you feel better if you ever get a bit poorly. Well,

00:22:58

Speaker 1: said his mum, that will be just perfect for when

00:23:02

Speaker 1: you're back at school. She looked at her two children,

00:23:07

Speaker 1: Lily with her magic slug and Jake with his magic cabbage,

00:23:13

Speaker 1: and clapped her hand to her mouth to stop herself

00:23:16

Speaker 1: laughing out loud, but she couldn't help it. A few

00:23:20

Speaker 1: giggles escaped. What asked the Jupiter twins, Why are you

00:23:26

Speaker 1: laughing so much? Ma'am well, she said, you too are

00:23:34

Speaker 1: going to have to be careful that the slug doesn't

00:23:38

Speaker 1: eat all of the magical cabbage. Jake and Lily looked

00:23:43

Speaker 1: at their companions, looked at each other, and then burst

00:23:48

Speaker 1: out laughing too. If the slug does eat the cabbage,

00:23:54

Speaker 1: said Jake, at least we know he won't get sick.

00:23:58

Speaker 1: When the three of them had managed to stop laughing,

00:24:02

Speaker 1: they looked up to the sky and saw that the

00:24:05

Speaker 1: sun was beginning to set. Come on, said the twins, Mom, off,

00:24:11

Speaker 1: we go back to the train station. I bet your

00:24:15

Speaker 1: dad will have cooked something delicious for dinner. So the

00:24:20

Speaker 1: Jupiter twins picked up all of the day's purchases, Jake's

00:24:26

Speaker 1: new green cloak and Lily's new blue feathered hat, their

00:24:31

Speaker 1: special self sorting notebooks, the stack of books they'd bought

00:24:37

Speaker 1: from the Bewitched bookstore, and the new companions the Slug

00:24:43

Speaker 1: and the Magic Cabbage, and followed their mom up the

00:24:48

Speaker 1: narrow stone stairs. At the top step, Jake leant over

00:24:54

Speaker 1: towards Lily and whispered in her ear, I can't wait

00:25:00

Speaker 1: to get back to school. Lillie looked at her brother,

00:25:05

Speaker 1: smiled brightly, and whispered, I know me neither
