Speaker 1: they'd last been at the Leura Academy of Magic hidden

Speaker 1: beneath the city. Instead, they'd been at home with their parents,

Speaker 1: using the magic they'd learned the previous year at school

Speaker 1: to help out in all kinds of ways. With a

Speaker 1: simple spell, they had gathered up the clumps of grass

Speaker 1: that got left on the lawn behind the lawnmark with

Speaker 1: a wave of their arms. They'd folded clothes and washed dishes,

Speaker 1: and scrubbed the knives and forks until they shone brand new.

Speaker 1: Their parents were both delighted with their magical abilities. There

Speaker 1: was a real blessing having a couple of young magicians

Speaker 1: hanging around the house, they said. When they weren't helping

Speaker 1: wonderful time on holiday, but sometimes when they were tucked

Speaker 1: they were missing school too. They couldn't wait to get

Speaker 1: back there and start learning more magic. One morning, towards

Speaker 1: the end of the holidays, the twins were sat on

Speaker 1: their bedroom floor building a huge castle out of tiny

Speaker 1: building blocks. They were very pleased with how it had

Speaker 1: turned out. It boasted several towers and a large courtyard,

Speaker 1: and a bright blue moat circling its stone walls. Jake

Speaker 1: was just fixing the final battlement to a turret when

Speaker 1: their bedroom door opened and their mum walked in. She

Speaker 1: stood in the middle of the room, as she often did,

Speaker 1: with one hand on her hip. In the other hand,

Speaker 1: she held a piece of paper. What an impressive castle,

Speaker 1: she said, looking down at their handiwork and smiling. Then

Speaker 1: a small frown appeared on her forehead. But I think

Speaker 1: it's missing something, she added, What, asked Lily? Inspecting the

Speaker 1: castle all over, she couldn't see that they'd missed anything.

Speaker 1: Their mum pointed a finger at the front of the castle.

Speaker 1: It's missing a gate, she said, How are all the

Speaker 1: little people supposed to get in? Oh you're right, cried Jake, laughing.

Speaker 1: Their mum was always so good at spotting things that

Speaker 1: they could see. He gave the front of the castle

Speaker 1: a quick tap, and a wooden gate appeared, complete with

Speaker 1: metal hinges and a perfect iron pork colors that could

Speaker 1: be lifted up and down. There we go, Jake said,

Speaker 1: that's better. What's that, asked Lily, pointing at the piece

Speaker 1: of paper in their mum's hand. This, she replied, brandishing

Speaker 1: the paper in the air, is a letter from your school.

Speaker 1: A letter from their school. Now their mum had their

Speaker 1: undivided attention. What does it say, the twins asked, bubbling

Speaker 1: with excitement. Their mum cleared her throat and, taking a

Speaker 1: deep breath, began to read the letter out loud. Dear

Speaker 1: Lily and Jake, Jupiter, in a few days time, he

Speaker 1: would be returning to the Leora Academy to embark upon

Speaker 1: another year of magical learning. At the end of this letter,

Speaker 1: need to ensure you have prepared for the coming year,

Speaker 1: with swing sets and dogs running around in circles. They

Speaker 1: of your clothes don't fit you any more. She led

Speaker 1: them down to the doorway of a small dark shop

Speaker 1: inside The walls were lined with so many clothes, soft

Speaker 1: woolen robes, crisp cotton shirts, pointed felt hats that the

Speaker 1: air in the room felt muffled from the mass of clothes.

Speaker 1: threw his measuring tape up into the air. For a

Speaker 1: few moments, it hung there before snaking through the air

Speaker 1: towards the twins. First, it measured around Jake's shoulders before

Speaker 1: the moment, including invisible ink that only reveals itself if

Speaker 1: you whisper the right password, and a pencil case that

Speaker 1: can store over a hundred pencils but weighs no more

Speaker 1: than a feather. The twins mum explained to the woman

Speaker 1: that they needed to look at the notepads since they

Speaker 1: were heading back to school and would need somewhere to

Speaker 1: write everything down that they'd learned. Ah. Yes, the woman said,

Speaker 1: blinking down at them kindly, we have just the thing.

Speaker 1: They followed the woman across the shop to a wall

Speaker 1: lined with notepads of many different shapes, sizes, and colors.

Speaker 1: Lily pointed at one that was in the shape of

Speaker 1: a crescent moon. Ah, sighed the woman. Our lunar pad.

Speaker 1: It waxes and wanes with the moon. A marvelous bit

Speaker 1: of magic, but a little inconvenient if you need to

Speaker 1: drop something down on a new moon and discover it's

Speaker 1: disappeared altogether. The shopkeeper told them that the absolute best

Speaker 1: seller for kids returning to Magic School that September was

Speaker 1: a notepad that automatically filed the notes you made according

Speaker 1: to school subject. It can even tell which notes haven't

Speaker 1: quite gone into your memory well enough, she told them,

Speaker 1: and places them at the front of the notepad to

Speaker 1: help you when the time comes for revision. They all

Speaker 1: agreed that this was the perfect notepad to buy. Jake

Speaker 1: chose a dark green one to go with his cloak,

Speaker 1: and Lily chose one of an icy blue, which would

Speaker 1: go just perfectly with her new hat. They stored their

Speaker 1: station shopkeeper, and went back out to the square. Last up,

Speaker 1: Jake and Lily. Well hop in you two, she said,

Speaker 1: let's go and find them. They didn't need telling twice.

Speaker 1: The Jupiter twins jumped into the contraption beside the bookseller,

Speaker 1: and once she'd made sure they were securely in, she

Speaker 1: In spite of all the rattling, it was a surprisingly

Speaker 1: as riding his broom. Book spines flew past them in

Speaker 1: a blur of color, and soon they came to a

Speaker 1: there it is. She pointed at a book by Jake's shoulder, which,

Speaker 1: upon hearing its name, had opened three bright blue eyes

Speaker 1: and started staring at them. Go on, then, the bookseller said, encouragingly,

Speaker 1: seeing that Jake was a little nervous take it, Jake

Speaker 1: the floor where the Jupiter twins mum was waiting for them.

Speaker 1: and also I picked up one more. She showed her mum,

Speaker 1: one too? Her mum laughed and said that was quite

Speaker 1: all right, and with great delight Lily tucked the book

Speaker 1: of fairy Tales into her bag alongside the other books.

Speaker 1: They thanked the bookseller and stepped back out into the square.

Speaker 1: Their mum sighed and slapped her hands together as though

Speaker 1: she were brushing dust from them, which was what she

Speaker 1: Oh kay, then she said, that's us all done. Come on,

Speaker 1: you two, let's head home before she'd even finished speaking,

Speaker 1: She turned away and begun to head towards the narrow

Speaker 1: stone staircase that would lead them back out into the

Speaker 1: non magical part of the city of York. But she'd

Speaker 1: only made it a few steps when suddenly both her

Speaker 1: children were on her, Jake hanging off the sleeve of

Speaker 1: her right arm and Lily hanging off the sleeve of

Speaker 1: her left arm. No, ma'am, they cried, We're not done yet.

Speaker 1: a companion each. The twins wandered around the emporium, looking

Speaker 1: around at all of the creatures, cats and frogs, and

Speaker 1: enchanted flowers, magicians rabbits and crafty cats, and trees that

Speaker 1: grew magical ingredients. It took them quite a while to choose,

Speaker 1: but eventually they returned to where their mum was waiting

Speaker 1: for them at the front of the emporium, leafing through

Speaker 1: a magazine about how to care for your new pet unicorn. Well,

Speaker 1: she said, seeing them return. Have you both chosen your

Speaker 1: new companions? Go on and show me. Then. First of all,

Speaker 1: Lily showed her mum what she had chosen. It was

Speaker 1: a bright green slug that fitted perfectly in the palm

Speaker 1: seemed to twinkle with starlight. This cabbage has magical healing properties,

Speaker 1: he told her. Just eat a leaf and it will
