In tonight's premium bedtime story, we're going to be busting the myth that polar bears and penguins never meet, with the story of Cubby and Perry, a polar bear and a penguin that travelled from their respective homes in the north and south pole, across the planet, to meet one another. The only problem was, their paths didn't cross and they missed eachother entirely! Whoopsy. Luckily, they hatch new plans to put that to rights. Relax, get sleepy, and letโs begin!

[00:03:45] Anyway, here's a preview of this very special episode.
[00:03:50] Have you ever heard that polar bears and penguins have never met?
[00:04:02] It's one of those things that everyone believes, like leopards can't change their spots, and tigers can't change their stripes, and that zebras are black with white stripes.
[00:04:15] But that just isn't true.
[00:04:18] Imagine wearing the same thing every single day.
[00:04:23] It would quickly get more than a little bit boring, wouldn't it?
[00:04:27] That's what leopards think too.
[00:04:29] So, of course they change their spots.
[00:04:33] Sometimes, they wake up in the morning and feel a bit more like the six on a dice, and sometimes more like the one or the two.
[00:04:43] They swivel their spots around to suit their mood.
[00:04:47] Tigers do the same thing.
[00:04:48] If they have important meetings to go to, they add extra stripes.
[00:04:53] Where do you think the idea of pinstripe suits came from?
[00:04:58] And, as for the zebras, they sometimes feel like adding white stripes to a black background.
[00:05:04] And on other days, for no reason they can put their hoof on, they feel like putting black stripes on a white background.
[00:05:12] These are all very subtle differences, of course.
[00:05:16] And unless you know them very well, on first name terms, that sort of thing, you probably wouldn't notice.
[00:05:24] So, leopards and tigers and zebras used to have a jolly good time changing up their spots and stripes on a whim.
[00:05:34] Until they realised that scientists were watching them very closely indeed.
[00:05:41] They came to an agreement that whenever a scientist was around, they'd switch back to the same display of spots or stripes.
[00:05:51] It was their way of getting won over the scientists, you see.
[00:05:56] Those people who came around in ridiculous safari hats and long shorts with long socks,
[00:06:04] and who hummed and whored with pens and paper,
[00:06:07] and who thought they knew everything about everything.
[00:06:12] Well, turns out they don't.
[00:06:15] And leopards and tigers and zebras have a lot of laughs about that.
[00:06:22] So, now that you know this, perhaps you won't be surprised to hear that, of course, polar bears and penguins have met.
[00:06:31] Quite regularly, in fact.
[00:06:33] You understand why this is strange.
[00:06:37] Polar bears live at the North Pole, and penguins live at the South.
[00:06:41] That's quite literally an entire world between them.
[00:06:47] And so it's fair to assume they've never laid eyes on each other.
[00:06:53] But that belief has to be based on the idea that polar bears and penguins aren't smart enough
[00:06:59] to figure out that they live on the top and bottom of a very big ball,
[00:07:04] and that perhaps they could find a way of travelling to the other side of it.
[00:07:12] Let's just say that when humans first arrived at the two poles over a hundred years ago,
[00:07:19] the first thing polar bears and penguins thought wasn't,
[00:07:24] what on earth is that strange new creature?
[00:07:28] No.
[00:07:30] The first thing that went through their minds was,
[00:07:33] well, about time.
[00:07:36] They'd been placing bets for centuries by this point.
[00:07:40] Polar bears believing that humans would make it to the North before they did the South,
[00:07:46] and penguins believing the opposite.
