00:00:10

Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Kuala Moon, a podcast of

00:00:14

Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime

00:00:19

Speaker 1: a tree. Tonight, we're headed to cook a bar of

00:00:23

Speaker 1: kindie with a sweet little puggle who I think you'll

00:00:27

Speaker 1: enjoy getting to know very very much. Oh, what's a puggle?

00:00:32

Speaker 1: A puggle is a baby platypus. And what's a platypus.

00:00:36

Speaker 1: A platypus is a unique and wonderful animal with the

00:00:40

Speaker 1: feet of an otter. You have to picture this the

00:00:44

Speaker 1: beak of a duck and the tale of a beaver.

00:00:48

Speaker 1: That's the feet of an otter, the beak of a

00:00:51

Speaker 1: duck and the tail of a beaver. And Cuddle is

00:00:55

Speaker 1: our new little friend. She's a real sweetie and it's

00:00:58

Speaker 1: her first day at kindergarten. Before we join her and

00:01:02

Speaker 1: meet her school bus Apollo the Alligator, and her new

00:01:06

Speaker 1: friend and her new teacher, a bumblebee by the name

00:01:11

Speaker 1: of Missus Bloomington. Let's get into bed and give a

00:01:14

Speaker 1: really big sigh m hm, and maybe another one mm

00:01:27

Speaker 1: and then wriggle around until you find your comfious spot

00:01:30

Speaker 1: in bed. Try closing your eyes and taking some steady

00:01:35

Speaker 1: breaths in and out. If your eyes don't want to close,

00:01:39

Speaker 1: that's fine too, Just rest them as you focus on

00:01:42

Speaker 1: breathing in and out, in and out, in and out,

00:01:55

Speaker 1: and conjure up in your mind a little picture of

00:01:59

Speaker 1: a very little duck beaked, otter footed, beaver tailed miracle.

00:02:05

Speaker 1: This is Cuddle the Puggle by Jane Thomas. In the

00:02:17

Speaker 1: heart of Sleepy Forest, there's a school. It's surrounded by

00:02:22

Speaker 1: huge green playing fields where the kids play everything from

00:02:25

Speaker 1: hockey to football to catch a Star. The last game is,

00:02:29

Speaker 1: of course, only played on the warmest summer nights. And

00:02:32

Speaker 1: then there's a giant outdoor chest set in a swimming pool.

00:02:35

Speaker 1: And wait, you don't know how to play catch a Star.

00:02:40

Speaker 1: It's when you head outside on a balmy night with

00:02:42

Speaker 1: your friends and family and weave a net from the

00:02:45

Speaker 1: thread of silkworms. Then you add a handle made from

00:02:49

Speaker 1: the branch of a bungo mungo tree and take it

00:02:52

Speaker 1: in turns to try and catch falling stars. The trick

00:02:56

Speaker 1: is to balance out the time spent making the net

00:03:00

Speaker 1: and chasing the stars, for although a larger net makes

00:03:04

Speaker 1: it easier to catch the stars, you'll miss out on

00:03:07

Speaker 1: many chances because you're busy weaving the delicate threads for longer.

00:03:12

Speaker 1: Experts that catch a star can use a net as

00:03:15

Speaker 1: small as the palm of their hand, but it takes

00:03:18

Speaker 1: many decades of playing the game to even come close

00:03:22

Speaker 1: to being an expert. Anyway, how were we? Ah? Yes,

00:03:28

Speaker 1: I was telling you all about Sleepy Forest School. There

00:03:31

Speaker 1: are three separate schools in one really one for the

00:03:34

Speaker 1: oldest children, Sleepy Forest High, one for the slightly younger children,

00:03:40

Speaker 1: Sleepy Forest Elementary, and finally, there's a kindergarten for the

00:03:44

Speaker 1: very youngest children of all. The Kooko Barrakindie is run

00:03:48

Speaker 1: by a big, fuzzy, black and yellow fluffball of a

00:03:51

Speaker 1: bee named Missus Bloomington. She has the tiniest pair of

00:03:57

Speaker 1: glasses balanced on her nose and rushes about so fast

00:04:02

Speaker 1: it seems she can be in all corners of the

00:04:04

Speaker 1: kindergarten at once. Between classes, when the children are playing outside,

00:04:10

Speaker 1: Missus Bloomington takes a rest in her favorite bright red

00:04:14

Speaker 1: hibiscus flower. She can climb deep inside the petals and

00:04:19

Speaker 1: bury herself away to not be disturbed by all the questions.

00:04:24

Speaker 1: Inside the hibiscus flower, she never hears, please miss or

00:04:29

Speaker 1: I miss or, where's Billy's being silly? Make him stop.

00:04:36

Speaker 1: One of the newest members of the Kookobarra Kindie is

00:04:39

Speaker 1: a shy little puggle called Cuddle the Puggle, which means

00:04:44

Speaker 1: baby platypus, as of course you knew, is finally old

00:04:48

Speaker 1: enough to head off to kindergarten for the very first time.

00:04:53

Speaker 1: Her older brother and sister, Huggle and Snuggle, have only

00:04:57

Speaker 1: told her good things about the skool. Cuddle has seen

00:05:02

Speaker 1: the school maybe a thousand times by now, not that

00:05:07

Speaker 1: she can remember all of those thousand times, because on

00:05:10

Speaker 1: some occasions she was very tiny. Indeed, she went with

00:05:14

Speaker 1: her mother on all the days that Hugger and Snuggle

00:05:17

Speaker 1: were being dropped off, and she's looked through the gates

00:05:21

Speaker 1: and seen all the bigger children heading in with their

00:05:23

Speaker 1: backpacks and colorful lunch boxes, and Cuddle has thought how

00:05:28

Speaker 1: exciting it all. Looks a little bit scary too, but

00:05:33

Speaker 1: definitely exciting. And here it is, her very first day

00:05:39

Speaker 1: at their Cooker Bark Indie. Cuddle has a brand new

00:05:43

Speaker 1: lunch box to take with her. It's bright red and

00:05:46

Speaker 1: has a picture of an elephant on the front, and

00:05:49

Speaker 1: inside she has a little set of sandwiches, a shiny

00:05:52

Speaker 1: green apple that she has made extra shiny by rubbing

00:05:56

Speaker 1: it on her jumper, and a piece of cake wrapped

00:06:00

Speaker 1: up in paper. She doesn't know it yet, but Cuddle's

00:06:05

Speaker 1: mother has slipped a special have a good day note

00:06:08

Speaker 1: into the lunch box too. That'll be a lovely surprise

00:06:12

Speaker 1: when it comes to lunchtime. Her mother helps her with

00:06:16

Speaker 1: her backpack filled with brand new pencils that she's carefully

00:06:20

Speaker 1: sharpened to the pointiest of points, and an exercise book

00:06:25

Speaker 1: with her name written in big bold letters across the front.

00:06:30

Speaker 1: Cuddle has seen the books that her brother and sister

00:06:32

Speaker 1: have brought back from school, and she can't wait to

00:06:35

Speaker 1: see what she will be given to bring home too.

00:06:39

Speaker 1: The four of them walk to school together, heading along

00:06:43

Speaker 1: the little lane through the trees that takes them past

00:06:46

Speaker 1: a dozen other cottages. The neighbors smile and wave, looking

00:06:51

Speaker 1: up from washing cars and watering plants and picking up newspapers,

00:06:57

Speaker 1: and wish Cuddle a wonderful first day at the Cukobara Kindy.

00:07:03

Speaker 1: Some of them wander over to their garden fences and

00:07:05

Speaker 1: start talking with each other, remembering their first days many

00:07:10

Speaker 1: many moons ago at the very same kindergarten. You'd be

00:07:15

Speaker 1: surprised how few residents ever leave the neighborhood, Or maybe

00:07:20

Speaker 1: you wouldn't if you realized what a perfect little corner

00:07:23

Speaker 1: of Sleepy Forest it is. All around the world, children

00:07:29

Speaker 1: walk and cycle and ride in cars or take buses

00:07:33

Speaker 1: and trains to get to school, and here in Sleepy Forest,

00:07:38

Speaker 1: you take the alligator. The alligator has been doing this

00:07:42

Speaker 1: job for over forty years now and knows how to

00:07:46

Speaker 1: ease his way gently along the waters, his back piled

00:07:51

Speaker 1: high with animals of all sorts who are on their

00:07:54

Speaker 1: way to the school. Cud Or weights at the alligator

00:07:59

Speaker 1: stop with the others. Finally, seeing him come into view

00:08:02

Speaker 1: with his smart black cap in place, she knows he

00:08:06

Speaker 1: will stop anyway, but just to be sure, she holds

00:08:10

Speaker 1: up her little platypus paw to make sure he knows

00:08:13

Speaker 1: she absolutely must get on board too. The alligator weaves

00:08:19

Speaker 1: his tail through the water to bring himself to a stop,

00:08:23

Speaker 1: and everyone waiting clambers on board, looking for spare scales

00:08:28

Speaker 1: to lean against. The biggest, oldest, and bravest kids sit

00:08:34

Speaker 1: right at the back, almost halfway along his tail. Cuddle

00:08:39

Speaker 1: watches as snuggle and huggle head further back along the

00:08:43

Speaker 1: alligator than she dares to go, and instead she sits

00:08:47

Speaker 1: up near the front with her mother, carefully putting her

00:08:50

Speaker 1: red elephant lunch box on her knee so she is

00:08:53

Speaker 1: sure not to forget it. The alligator looks over at

00:08:58

Speaker 1: the stop with his huege eyes to check nobody has

00:09:02

Speaker 1: been left behind, and then sets off slowly along the river,

00:09:07

Speaker 1: pausing here and there to pick up more passengers. There's

00:09:11

Speaker 1: a market today, so the stop by the weeping Willow

00:09:15

Speaker 1: takes longer than usual, with many creatures climbing off and

00:09:19

Speaker 1: heading over to the stools filled with pineapples and mangoes

00:09:23

Speaker 1: and bright green watermelons holding promises of pinkness inside. Cuddle

00:09:31

Speaker 1: nudges her mother and points to a pyramid of coconuts

00:09:35

Speaker 1: and proudly counts all the way to ten, four on

00:09:39

Speaker 1: the bottom row, then three, then two, then one perched

00:09:45

Speaker 1: right on top. Her mother gives her a quick hug

00:09:50

Speaker 1: and a well dune deer, smiling to herself as she

00:09:55

Speaker 1: settles back against the alligator's scale, thinking of her clever

00:09:59

Speaker 1: little Huddle. Finally they are there at the school stop.

00:10:07

Speaker 1: Snuggle gives Cuddler high five and heads one way, and

00:10:11

Speaker 1: then Huggle gives Cuddle a quick kiss and heads another way.

00:10:15

Speaker 1: And then its cuddles turn to walk through the gates

00:10:18

Speaker 1: of the Kuoko bar a kindy for their very first time.

00:10:22

Speaker 1: Missus Bloomington is waiting there to meet her, buzzing gentle reassurances.

00:10:28

Speaker 1: As she guides the shy little Puggle up the path

00:10:32

Speaker 1: towards the classroom, Cuddle steps into the most colorful, busy,

00:10:39

Speaker 1: and lively room she has ever seen. There are balloons

00:10:44

Speaker 1: of all colors hanging from the ceiling, and somebody has

00:10:48

Speaker 1: made giant clouds from cotton wool and hung those up

00:10:52

Speaker 1: there too. Across one wall is a painting showing the

00:10:57

Speaker 1: whole of Sleepy for a school, and above it, of course,

00:11:02

Speaker 1: swoops a giant rainbow. Cuddoor sees cooker burrs and koalas

00:11:08

Speaker 1: and kangaroos and all sorts of animals painted on the

00:11:12

Speaker 1: picture too, and she searches around until she finds a

00:11:17

Speaker 1: family of platypus taking a dip in the village pond.

00:11:23

Speaker 1: On the other wall is a huge map of Sleepy Forest,

00:11:26

Speaker 1: with Cuddle's neighborhood right there on the edge of it.

00:11:29

Speaker 1: In the most southernmost point. She looks closely and sees

00:11:34

Speaker 1: that somebody has scrawled a star there and written my home,

00:11:40

Speaker 1: and somebody else has added onto that mine too. There's

00:11:46

Speaker 1: a huge window on one of the other walls that

00:11:49

Speaker 1: looks out onto the playing fields, and for the briefest moment,

00:11:55

Speaker 1: Cuddle sees Snuggle go rushing past with a hockey stick,

00:11:59

Speaker 1: the fastest flash on the grass. Cuddle has been longing

00:12:04

Speaker 1: to try hockey for years and has spent a lot

00:12:07

Speaker 1: of time practicing with snuggles stick, bouncing the ball up

00:12:11

Speaker 1: and down on the little curved end, and running up

00:12:14

Speaker 1: and down the garden while pushing the ball along in

00:12:17

Speaker 1: front of the stick. She has also secretly been practicing

00:12:22

Speaker 1: weaving nets for catch the Star, gathering up the long

00:12:27

Speaker 1: silkworm threads and hiding them at the back of her

00:12:30

Speaker 1: jumper drawer. Her nets are full of holes and keep

00:12:35

Speaker 1: falling apart, but slowly she's getting the hang of the

00:12:38

Speaker 1: delicate knots. She can't wait until she's old enough to

00:12:43

Speaker 1: go and play the game for the very first time,

00:12:46

Speaker 1: but she knows it probably won't be for years yet.

00:12:51

Speaker 1: The morning disappears in a mass of coloring and counting,

00:12:56

Speaker 1: and then playing catch with a bean bag, where the

00:12:59

Speaker 1: one who catches it to say something about themselves. When

00:13:03

Speaker 1: it comes to Cuddle's turn, she feels more shy than ever,

00:13:07

Speaker 1: but she manages to squeeze out or quick hello, then

00:13:11

Speaker 1: an I'm cuddle, and finally, with a huge effort, she

00:13:15

Speaker 1: adds I love to dance, before throwing the bean bag

00:13:20

Speaker 1: at a kangaroo who's waving his arms around and winking

00:13:23

Speaker 1: at her. Kevin announces the kangaroo, giddy with excitement, good day, gooday,

00:13:30

Speaker 1: good ey. I love dancing too. Cuddle flashes him a quick,

00:13:35

Speaker 1: shy smile, and at lunch time she finds Kevin sitting

00:13:39

Speaker 1: himself down beside her with a smile and a bounce.

00:13:43

Speaker 1: Love the lunch box, he says, cheerily, tapping the elephant's trunk.

00:13:48

Speaker 1: I think we're meant to be best friends. He holds

00:13:52

Speaker 1: up his lunch box, which is grass green and also

00:13:56

Speaker 1: has an elephant on it. Cuddle giggles and share makes

00:14:00

Speaker 1: Kevin's hand her first friend, she thinks to herself, her

00:14:05

Speaker 1: very own, not her brothers, not her sister's friend. The

00:14:11

Speaker 1: afternoon goes by almost as quickly as the morning, with

00:14:15

Speaker 1: Missus Bloomington telling them all about the planets in the sky.

00:14:20

Speaker 1: Cud Or listened to the names and thought they sounded

00:14:23

Speaker 1: like magic, dreaming of what it would be like to

00:14:27

Speaker 1: visit Jupiter, or Mars or Mercury. Missus Bloomington promised they

00:14:33

Speaker 1: would be able to look at some of the planets

00:14:35

Speaker 1: through a telescope sometime, and they would see all the

00:14:38

Speaker 1: details of the moon. She told them about a place

00:14:43

Speaker 1: called the Sea of Tranquility, and Cuddle imagined riding on

00:14:48

Speaker 1: the back of the alligator across the sea with such

00:14:51

Speaker 1: a name as that. She secretly decided to rename the

00:14:56

Speaker 1: river the River of Tranquility, and she whispered that to Kevin,

00:15:02

Speaker 1: who grinned at her and said, if they were going

00:15:04

Speaker 1: to do that, then they should secretly call the alligator Apollo,

00:15:09

Speaker 1: after the rocket that flew to the Moon. Cuddor left

00:15:14

Speaker 1: school that day with an empty lunch box and a

00:15:17

Speaker 1: very full backpack. She had all these new and important things,

00:15:23

Speaker 1: like a ruler and a calculator, and a calendar and

00:15:27

Speaker 1: a diary. And she had a book that she was

00:15:30

Speaker 1: to read and questions she was to answer. The book

00:15:35

Speaker 1: was all about the stars in the sky, and how

00:15:38

Speaker 1: they twinkled and sparkled and shone, and how little creatures

00:15:44

Speaker 1: called shine makers traveled between each and every star and

00:15:49

Speaker 1: polished them up every single night. Missus Bloomington headed to

00:15:54

Speaker 1: the school gates with her class and greeted all the parents,

00:15:58

Speaker 1: telling them little to from the day and letting them

00:16:01

Speaker 1: know there would be a spelling bee at the end

00:16:04

Speaker 1: of the week, and all their children had the lists

00:16:07

Speaker 1: to learn tucked safely into their backpacks. Cuddle made sure

00:16:13

Speaker 1: that her mother met Kevin, and then she introduced him

00:16:17

Speaker 1: to huggle and snuggle when they appeared too. And when

00:16:21

Speaker 1: she climbed onto the back of the alligator, she carefully

00:16:25

Speaker 1: chose a spine that had a space next to it

00:16:28

Speaker 1: where Kevin could sit, but that was still just a

00:16:32

Speaker 1: couple of spines away from where her mother would be.

00:16:36

Speaker 1: Kevin hopped off the alligator well off Apollo a few

00:16:40

Speaker 1: stops before Cuddle, and as he hopped away, he turned

00:16:46

Speaker 1: and called out b trank Wheel Cuddle, and she smiled

00:16:51

Speaker 1: to herself at their private joke about the naming of

00:16:54

Speaker 1: the river. Back at home, Cuddle and her brother and

00:16:59

Speaker 1: sister disappeared to their rooms to do their homework. It

00:17:04

Speaker 1: was Cuddle's very first homework, so she was determined to

00:17:08

Speaker 1: take it very seriously. Indeed, she took out the list

00:17:14

Speaker 1: of words that Missus Bloomington wanted them to spell and

00:17:17

Speaker 1: read them again and again. Then she carefully copied them

00:17:23

Speaker 1: out into her exercise book, a letter at a time,

00:17:27

Speaker 1: and checking back that each one was absolutely correct. D

00:17:33

Speaker 1: she wrote, then her very careful R, followed by an E,

00:17:42

Speaker 1: then an A, and finally an M dream dream d

00:17:53

Speaker 1: R E A M. The next word sent her straight

00:18:00

Speaker 1: back to the classroom and looking up at the ceiling

00:18:02

Speaker 1: with all of the balloons and giant puffs of cotton

00:18:05

Speaker 1: wool as she carefully wrote out the letters of clouds

00:18:10

Speaker 1: clouds c l o U d S. By the time

00:18:22

Speaker 1: she reached the tenth word on the list, Cuddle was

00:18:26

Speaker 1: beginning to feel very tired. Indeed, it was hard to concentrate,

00:18:32

Speaker 1: and it was a terribly long word she needed to spell.

00:18:36

Speaker 1: For a while, she wasn't even sure what it was,

00:18:39

Speaker 1: so she tried saying all the bits of the word

00:18:42

Speaker 1: in as many ways as she could. You She read

00:18:48

Speaker 1: u a ooh, call cal light like poot TuS to.

00:19:08

Speaker 1: Eventually she managed to put it all together correctly, and

00:19:11

Speaker 1: realized the word was eucalyptus. If she could learn to

00:19:16

Speaker 1: spell that, she decided she could learn to spell anything.

00:19:22

Speaker 1: And before she had quite learned how to spell it,

00:19:25

Speaker 1: it was time for dinner. When they were all there

00:19:28

Speaker 1: sitting around the table talking about school and hockey and maps,

00:19:33

Speaker 1: and how she had a friend called Kevin who also

00:19:36

Speaker 1: loved dancing and had a grass green lunch box with

00:19:40

Speaker 1: an elephant on it, and her brother talked about terribly

00:19:44

Speaker 1: big numbers, and her sister talked about terribly complicated physics,

00:19:50

Speaker 1: and Cuddle almost almost told them about the River of

00:19:55

Speaker 1: Tranquility and the alligator called Apollo, but she kept the

00:20:01

Speaker 1: secrets for herself and Kevin. She did write them in

00:20:05

Speaker 1: her diary, though, which came with a special little key

00:20:09

Speaker 1: and padlock, so she could keep her thoughts just for herself,

00:20:14

Speaker 1: And she carefully wrote about them in there, and replaced

00:20:17

Speaker 1: the padlock and turned the key and pushed the diary

00:20:21

Speaker 1: to the very bottom of her backpack. And then it

00:20:25

Speaker 1: was her turn to have a bath, which is one

00:20:28

Speaker 1: of the things puggles will never have a problem with doing.

00:20:32

Speaker 1: And she looked at the endless rainbows in the bubbles

00:20:36

Speaker 1: and thought of the huge rainbow painted on the wall

00:20:39

Speaker 1: in the classroom. The shampoo bottle was yellow, and she

00:20:44

Speaker 1: lined it up next to the black bottle that held

00:20:47

Speaker 1: her mother's conditioner, and for a moment she pretended that

00:20:51

Speaker 1: Missus Bloomington was there and asking her to spell her

00:20:55

Speaker 1: words dream, she said aloud, d r e A M

00:21:04

Speaker 1: A wonderful place where you can disappear and make magic.

00:21:08

Speaker 1: Every single night, Snuggle had told her that it was

00:21:13

Speaker 1: important to give a definition of the words to show

00:21:16

Speaker 1: you understood what you were saying. And spelling clouds, she said,

00:21:23

Speaker 1: c l o u d s white balls of fluff

00:21:29

Speaker 1: that float around in the sky. She thought of the

00:21:33

Speaker 1: clouds of cockatoos that flew through the sky, turning from

00:21:38

Speaker 1: pink to white as their wings moved up and down,

00:21:43

Speaker 1: up and down. And then Cuddle was tucked up in

00:21:48

Speaker 1: bed and her mother was reading her a story all

00:21:52

Speaker 1: about the stars in the sky and the shine makers

00:21:56

Speaker 1: who traveled between each and every star and pollen them

00:22:00

Speaker 1: until they shone like little pieces of silver and gold,

00:22:04

Speaker 1: sparkling throughout the night. She snuggled deep under her blankets

00:22:11

Speaker 1: and listened to the story, wondering if it was possible

00:22:16

Speaker 1: to catch a shine maker when you played Catch a Star,

00:22:20

Speaker 1: and deciding that she would ask Kevin to practice making

00:22:24

Speaker 1: the silkworm threadnets with her for when they were allowed

00:22:28

Speaker 1: to go and play the game. How do you spell dreams,

00:22:34

Speaker 1: her mother asked, softly, with a D and an R

00:22:42

Speaker 1: and an E, an A, an M and an S.

00:22:50

Speaker 1: Whispered cuddle. And how do you spell moonbeam? Her mother

00:22:58

Speaker 1: said gently an M, then an oak and another oak

00:23:05

Speaker 1: and an N, a B an E, an A and

00:23:14

Speaker 1: an M said cuddle, yawning, long and wide, and finally,

00:23:23

Speaker 1: little cuddle. How do you spell eucalyptus, her mother said,

00:23:29

Speaker 1: kissing cuddle on the forehead. It starts with uh, you mumbled,

00:23:39

Speaker 1: cuddle or maybe an e. And with that the little

00:23:48

Speaker 1: puggle drifted off to sleep, heading into dreams of rainbows

00:23:55

Speaker 1: and clouds and sparkling lighting stops
