00:00:19
Speaker 1: a dream. Before we begin tonight, Hello and welcome to Freyer, Astrid,
00:00:26
Speaker 1: n Ivy, Leana, Enya and Rufus, Ziggie, Waterman, Theo and
00:00:31
Speaker 1: Zoe Ava Anderson, Army and Theo are newest Cocoa Clubbers.
00:00:37
Speaker 1: Thank you so much to you and your adults for
00:00:40
Speaker 1: joining us as premium supporters. We wouldn't still be here
00:00:43
Speaker 1: without you all. I hope you'll enjoy listening to your
00:00:46
Speaker 1: four extra episodes each month and all the other stories
00:00:50
Speaker 1: without any adverts. And so to everyone everywhere. Happy autumn
00:00:55
Speaker 1: from the UK. The trees and hedges are all gradually
00:00:58
Speaker 1: changing color here, from the many shades of greens of
00:01:01
Speaker 1: the summer months to the oranges, reds and golds of
00:01:05
Speaker 1: this new season. Sonny loves dashing around in the fallen
00:01:09
Speaker 1: leaves and scattering them this way and that she's pretty
00:01:13
Speaker 1: much the same color as them. Can you picture a leaf,
00:01:17
Speaker 1: maybe a maple leaf like that on the Canadian flag
00:01:20
Speaker 1: or a crispy little copper beech leaf. Hold it in
00:01:24
Speaker 1: your mind, because tonight we're going to use our imaginations
00:01:28
Speaker 1: a lot, and we're going to join your autumn leaf
00:01:31
Speaker 1: as it twists and turns and floats on the breeze
00:01:35
Speaker 1: through town, across fields, and over a babbeling brook. As
00:01:41
Speaker 1: you follow it and listen to his journey, you'll get
00:01:45
Speaker 1: more and more relaxed and sleepy. So settle down in
00:01:52
Speaker 1: your bed and close your eyes. If you need to,
00:01:57
Speaker 1: wiggle your fingers and your toes, give your arms and
00:02:01
Speaker 1: your legs a gentle shake, and feel all of the
00:02:06
Speaker 1: tension from the day loosen from your body and drift away.
00:02:11
Speaker 1: Imagine it all floating up, up and away. Get really comfy. Good. Now,
00:02:22
Speaker 1: pull the covers up under your chin and we'll get
00:02:25
Speaker 1: started right away. This is Floating on a Breeze Autumn
00:02:31
Speaker 1: Leaf by Luke Prendergast. Tonight, we're going to let ourselves
00:02:44
Speaker 1: be carried to sleep on a gentle breeze. Imagine that
00:02:49
Speaker 1: you are lying down on a grassy bank, with the
00:02:52
Speaker 1: soft ground pressing into your back and your legs and
00:02:57
Speaker 1: the back of your head up above you. The sky
00:03:02
Speaker 1: is a deep blue, and the leaves on the trees
00:03:05
Speaker 1: so whispering in the gentle wind. Feel a cool breeze
00:03:10
Speaker 1: on your skin and hear the sound of those leaves rustling.
00:03:17
Speaker 1: With your eyes closed, the wind rippling through the leaves
00:03:22
Speaker 1: sounds like waves on the seashore. Isn't that a soothing sound?
00:03:29
Speaker 1: Now it's time for us to float up into the trees.
00:03:35
Speaker 1: Let's practice our deep breaths together, and each time you
00:03:39
Speaker 1: breathe out, imagine that you are getting lighter and lighter,
00:03:44
Speaker 1: until you're drifting up into the leaves. Are you ready?
00:03:51
Speaker 1: Take a big, deep breath in and then slowly let
00:03:57
Speaker 1: it out, And a deep breath in and slowly let
00:04:05
Speaker 1: it out. Breathe in and out once more. Breathe in
00:04:18
Speaker 1: and wonderful. Keep your eyes closed, but feel how weightless
00:04:26
Speaker 1: you've become. We have exhaled all of our heaviness and
00:04:32
Speaker 1: light as feathers, we have floated up into the canopy
00:04:37
Speaker 1: of the trees. All around us are little autumn leaves,
00:04:42
Speaker 1: green and golden and orange, swaying on the branches. These
00:04:48
Speaker 1: leaves all live up here together in a close community
00:04:52
Speaker 1: of leafy friends and family. As they see us, they
00:04:57
Speaker 1: shake softly on their branch, as though welcoming us into
00:05:03
Speaker 1: their community.
00:05:05
Speaker 2: Hello.
00:05:06
Speaker 1: Let's say hello back, Hello, leaves. We are going to
00:05:12
Speaker 1: spend this evening with one particular leaf. Can you see
00:05:17
Speaker 1: which one? Yeah? That one hanging from a high branch
00:05:21
Speaker 1: of the tree. It is small and shiny, and because
00:05:25
Speaker 1: it's autumn, it has turned a deep and golden yellow.
00:05:30
Speaker 1: This leaf is about to go on a very special journey.
00:05:35
Speaker 1: It just doesn't know it yet. The leaf lifts on
00:05:40
Speaker 1: a tall oak tree on the edge of the town park.
00:05:45
Speaker 1: Below the tree there is a playground with a shiny slide,
00:05:50
Speaker 1: a bright blue see saw, and a pair of swings,
00:05:53
Speaker 1: rocking back and forth in the gentle wind. Across the
00:05:59
Speaker 1: road is the school, and each day the leaf watches
00:06:03
Speaker 1: as the children leave school with their parents and come
00:06:06
Speaker 1: to the playground, where they laugh and play with each other.
00:06:11
Speaker 1: But for now, the playground is empty because it's evening
00:06:16
Speaker 1: and all of the children are tucked up in bed.
00:06:21
Speaker 1: Just as the leaf is fondly remembering the visions of
00:06:25
Speaker 1: children playing altogether, soaring back and forth on the swings
00:06:31
Speaker 1: as though they're flying, a gentle breeze picks up and
00:06:36
Speaker 1: all the leaves ripple on their branches. Then the leaf
00:06:43
Speaker 1: hears a voice. It's the voice of a kindly old man.
00:06:49
Speaker 1: The voice says, hello, My name is Zephyr, and I
00:06:57
Speaker 1: am the warm west wind. There is nothing to be
00:07:02
Speaker 1: afraid of. I am here to take you on a journey,
00:07:09
Speaker 1: a journey that every leaf goes on once in its life.
00:07:16
Speaker 1: Are you ready? The wind's voice is a deep, calm rumble,
00:07:24
Speaker 1: which makes the leaf feel very safe. Indeed, yes, the
00:07:31
Speaker 1: leaf tells the wind, I am ready to go on
00:07:35
Speaker 1: a journey. And with that, the breeze blows a little
00:07:40
Speaker 1: stronger and plucks the little leaf off its branch. The
00:07:47
Speaker 1: leaf drifts.
00:07:48
Speaker 2: Up, up, up, up high above the tree and the
00:07:57
Speaker 2: park and the town below.
00:08:02
Speaker 1: It's never been this far away from home before. The
00:08:07
Speaker 1: west wind lifts the leaf on its breeze and blows
00:08:11
Speaker 1: it over the town. The leaf feels utterly weightless and
00:08:17
Speaker 1: free as it twirls and tumbles and pirouettes through the air,
00:08:25
Speaker 1: drifting downward, only to be lifted up again on a
00:08:30
Speaker 1: warm current of air. This must be how the children
00:08:35
Speaker 1: playing in the park feel, thinks the leaf as it
00:08:39
Speaker 1: cart wheels and somersaults through the air. From high up,
00:08:46
Speaker 1: the leaf can see the whole town unfolding below. There
00:08:51
Speaker 1: are rows and rows of houses with slate roofs, and
00:08:56
Speaker 1: tendrils of smoke coming out of their chimneys, their bedroom
00:09:00
Speaker 1: windows all aglow. Here and there a car moves lazily
00:09:09
Speaker 1: down a road, or a man can be seen walking
00:09:13
Speaker 1: his dog. There is the red post box on the corner,
00:09:19
Speaker 1: and the doctor closing up her surgery for the night.
00:09:24
Speaker 1: It seems that all the town is sleepy and ready
00:09:29
Speaker 1: for bed Riding. The wind, besides the leaf is just
00:09:38
Speaker 1: like riding an unbelievably soft and gentle horse, a horse
00:09:45
Speaker 1: made out of cloud and air. The leaf trusts the
00:09:50
Speaker 1: wind to take it anywhere, as if the old man
00:09:57
Speaker 1: in the wind has heard the leaf's thought. The breeze
00:10:02
Speaker 1: drops a little, and the leaf begins to drift down
00:10:08
Speaker 1: towards the earth. They pass between a row of houses
00:10:14
Speaker 1: and over a line of cars, before coming to rest
00:10:19
Speaker 1: hovering in the air outside a shop with big glass windows.
00:10:28
Speaker 1: The leaf looks in. The shop is a bakery. The
00:10:33
Speaker 1: leaf can see the baker in her apron and white hat.
00:10:38
Speaker 1: She has stood at a counter, kneading a big ball
00:10:42
Speaker 1: of dough with her large, careful hands. The baker's face
00:10:47
Speaker 1: is dusted with white flower, and every time she kneads
00:10:52
Speaker 1: the ball of dough. Little puffs of flower explode like
00:10:56
Speaker 1: magical clouds. She rolls the dough into a perfect sphere,
00:11:04
Speaker 1: like a little planet. When the baker is finished with
00:11:08
Speaker 1: one ball of dough, she plops it on a tray
00:11:12
Speaker 1: and begins to roll another. What is she doing, the
00:11:18
Speaker 1: little leaf wonders, and Zephyr, the old man in the wind, replies,
00:11:26
Speaker 1: the baker is preparing the bread for the morning. In
00:11:31
Speaker 1: the morning, when the sun has barely risen, all the
00:11:37
Speaker 1: people in the town will start arriving at the bakery
00:11:41
Speaker 1: to collect their daily bread so that they can make
00:11:45
Speaker 1: sandwiches for lunch. All spread a slice with butter and
00:11:50
Speaker 1: jam for breakfast. Everyone who lives nearby depends on the
00:11:56
Speaker 1: baker's hard work so that they can be fed each day.
00:12:02
Speaker 1: So the baker spends her evenings preparing the dough with
00:12:08
Speaker 1: great care so she can help spour all the other townspeople.
00:12:17
Speaker 1: The west Wind's words make the little leaf think about
00:12:22
Speaker 1: his old home, the old oak tree. While the leaf
00:12:27
Speaker 1: lived high up in the canopy, under the ground lived
00:12:32
Speaker 1: an entire network of roots, all buried in the earth.
00:12:39
Speaker 1: It was the root's job to collect up water and
00:12:42
Speaker 1: food from the soil and send it up the thick
00:12:47
Speaker 1: brown trunk to feed all the leaves hanging from the branches. Yes,
00:12:56
Speaker 1: says the leaf twisting in the air, I under stand.
00:13:01
Speaker 1: The baker is like the roots of the town, making
00:13:05
Speaker 1: sure that nobody goes hungry. Then the breeze picks up
00:13:12
Speaker 1: once more, lifting the little leaf and blowing it down
00:13:18
Speaker 1: the street and over the roofs of the houses. Together
00:13:25
Speaker 1: they float further out of the town, where the houses
00:13:30
Speaker 1: are further apart and have little gardens with tables and chairs.
00:13:39
Speaker 1: The sun has set completely now and the sky has
00:13:44
Speaker 1: turned a deep lilac. The silver moon is just beginning
00:13:51
Speaker 1: to peek her face out, smiling her lovely smile down
00:13:57
Speaker 1: upon the world. Soon they will come to a house
00:14:03
Speaker 1: with red bricks and ivy growing up the wall. The
00:14:08
Speaker 1: windows of the house are all dark, except one upstairs window,
00:14:15
Speaker 1: which glows softly. The window is open, and the little
00:14:22
Speaker 1: leaf drifts straight through it, coming to land lightly on
00:14:27
Speaker 1: a dressing table. In the room, a boy is tucked
00:14:33
Speaker 1: up in bed. The covers are pulled up under his
00:14:37
Speaker 1: chin and his head rests on a soft pillow. He
00:14:43
Speaker 1: looks very cozy. Indeed, next to him on the bed
00:14:50
Speaker 1: sits his mother. She has a book open in her lap,
00:14:55
Speaker 1: her book with many words written on it, and with
00:14:59
Speaker 1: many colorful pictures too. The mother is reading her son
00:15:05
Speaker 1: a bedtime story. Her voice is soft as silk, and
00:15:11
Speaker 1: as she speaks, a little leaf feels a deep calmness
00:15:17
Speaker 1: settling all around. The mother tells her son about a
00:15:25
Speaker 1: young blue winged hummingbird who's about to go on a
00:15:30
Speaker 1: big adventure. It is her first time going out into
00:15:35
Speaker 1: the forest to search for nectar in all the plants
00:15:40
Speaker 1: and flowers. The hummingbird's father makes sure her feathers are
00:15:47
Speaker 1: all in order, gives her a peck on the head,
00:15:51
Speaker 1: and what she's her go. The hummingbird has a wonderful
00:15:57
Speaker 1: time flying around, dipping her long beak into all the
00:16:02
Speaker 1: beautiful colored flowers and collecting nectar to take back to
00:16:08
Speaker 1: her family's nest. But as she's flying back home, she
00:16:14
Speaker 1: finds that she's collected so much nectar that she cannot
00:16:19
Speaker 1: carry it all back to the nest by herself. It
00:16:22
Speaker 1: is too heavy. She hovers for a while, wondering just
00:16:29
Speaker 1: what to do, but just then her father appears hanging
00:16:35
Speaker 1: in the air right beside her. Don't worry, he tells her,
00:16:41
Speaker 1: I am here to help you, and together the hummingbird
00:16:48
Speaker 1: and her father carry all the nectar back home and
00:16:54
Speaker 1: feast on it happily for many days. By the time
00:17:00
Speaker 1: the mother had finished her story, her son has drifted
00:17:05
Speaker 1: into a peaceful sleep. She strokes his hair, gives him
00:17:11
Speaker 1: a kiss on the forehead, and switches out the bedside light.
00:17:19
Speaker 1: The warm west wind reaches through the window and lifts
00:17:25
Speaker 1: the little leaf up again on a breeze, carrying him
00:17:30
Speaker 1: out into the night. The little leaf tells the wind
00:17:35
Speaker 1: about the mother's bedtime story. Did you enjoy it? The
00:17:42
Speaker 1: wind asks, and the little leaf says, yes, it was
00:17:49
Speaker 1: a brilliant story and very true. The leaf tells the
00:17:55
Speaker 1: wind family will always be there to lend a helping
00:18:01
Speaker 1: hand when you need it. The leaf continues its journey
00:18:08
Speaker 1: on the breeze. The houses disappear as they pass completely
00:18:15
Speaker 1: out of the town and into the countryside. They float
00:18:21
Speaker 1: over fields of corn and barley, their long stalks and
00:18:27
Speaker 1: ripe ears, all swaying in the breeze. They travel over hedgerows,
00:18:36
Speaker 1: where sparrows perch sleepily and hedgehogs build their nests in
00:18:42
Speaker 1: the soft earth. They drift over a tinkling stream where
00:18:51
Speaker 1: fish are swimming homeward, and an otter curls its glistening
00:18:56
Speaker 1: body on the bank. The sky is dark now, the
00:19:04
Speaker 1: moon is full and shining brightly, like a silver coin
00:19:09
Speaker 1: suspended in the sky. All around her, the stars, her
00:19:16
Speaker 1: closest friends, wink and twinkle. Eventually, the breeze carries our
00:19:25
Speaker 1: little leaf into a farmyard where a farmer in a
00:19:29
Speaker 1: jacket and brown boots is saying good night to all
00:19:34
Speaker 1: the animals. The leaf watches as the farmer walks around
00:19:41
Speaker 1: the yard, checking on each of the animals in turn.
00:19:47
Speaker 1: He goes to the cow shed, where the cows are
00:19:50
Speaker 1: mooing and merrily munching on hay. He scratches one big
00:19:57
Speaker 1: cow behind the ear and says, go night. He goes
00:20:03
Speaker 1: to the sheep pen, where the sheep are nestled down
00:20:07
Speaker 1: like fluffy clouds, sharing each other's walls. He goes to
00:20:14
Speaker 1: the chicken coop, where the hens ruffle their feathers and
00:20:19
Speaker 1: shift their weight from side to side. The farmer throws
00:20:25
Speaker 1: a handful of corn into the coop in case the
00:20:29
Speaker 1: chickens get peckish during the night. Good Night, chucks, he says.
00:20:37
Speaker 1: He looks over the stable doors where the horses are resting.
00:20:43
Speaker 1: He pats each of them on the neck and wishes
00:20:47
Speaker 1: them good night. Finally, the farmer crouches down to the
00:20:55
Speaker 1: sheep dog by his feet, with a lustrous black and
00:20:59
Speaker 1: white coat and kind, intelligent eyes. Come on now, he says,
00:21:08
Speaker 1: time for us to go to bed, And with that
00:21:14
Speaker 1: the farmer and his dog leave the yard and walk
00:21:19
Speaker 1: back up to their home, where a warm fire and
00:21:23
Speaker 1: their soft beds await them. Watching the farmer tending to
00:21:33
Speaker 1: all his animals. The leaf has been filled with a
00:21:38
Speaker 1: feeling of great warmth and happiness. Everywhere it has been.
00:21:45
Speaker 1: It has seen all kinds of creatures, people and animals
00:21:52
Speaker 1: and plants living together in harmony. The world the leaf things,
00:22:01
Speaker 1: is full of kindness and care. People look out for
00:22:07
Speaker 1: one another, helping those in need and asking for help
00:22:13
Speaker 1: themselves when they need it. And that the leaf seeds
00:22:20
Speaker 1: now is how happiness grows from a tiny seed into
00:22:27
Speaker 1: a big oak tree. The leaf shivers in the air
00:22:36
Speaker 1: and with a rustle, let's out a big yawn. It
00:22:42
Speaker 1: has been a long day. It has been quite a journey. Indeed,
00:22:50
Speaker 1: the leaf is tired and ready to settle. Down for
00:22:55
Speaker 1: a peaceful night's sleep. Is our journey almost over, the
00:23:03
Speaker 1: leaf asks the warm west wind. Yes, the west wind replies,
00:23:13
Speaker 1: it is almost over. Soon we will find somewhere we
00:23:20
Speaker 1: can rest. As the breeze lifts the leaf up one
00:23:28
Speaker 1: final time in its gentle hands, the leaf feels glad
00:23:35
Speaker 1: to have come on this autumnal journey with Zephyr. They
00:23:40
Speaker 1: have traveled together from the leaf's old home in the park,
00:23:46
Speaker 1: through the town, and out into the countryside. On the journey,
00:23:53
Speaker 1: they have seen so much of the world and learnt
00:23:58
Speaker 1: so many things. The leaf remembers the baker who spent
00:24:05
Speaker 1: her evening preparing the morning bread for the whole village,
00:24:11
Speaker 1: and the little clouds of flour rrupting each time she
00:24:16
Speaker 1: kneaded the dough. And the leaf remembers the mother reading
00:24:23
Speaker 1: her son a bedtime story about the blue feathered hummingbird,
00:24:29
Speaker 1: whose father helped her carry all of the nectar she'd
00:24:34
Speaker 1: spent the day busily collecting. And the leaf remembers the
00:24:41
Speaker 1: farmer who cared so deeply for all his animals, making
00:24:48
Speaker 1: sure they were all well fed and warm for a
00:24:52
Speaker 1: good night's sleep. The breeze carries the leaf out of
00:24:59
Speaker 1: the farmyard, over the roof of a barn filled with hay,
00:25:05
Speaker 1: and into a field of soft grass. In the middle
00:25:12
Speaker 1: of the field is a tall oak tree with a
00:25:16
Speaker 1: twisted trunk and great big limbs stretching out. Around the
00:25:24
Speaker 1: base of its trunk lies a soft pile of leaves,
00:25:29
Speaker 1: which have fallen from the trees branches, or else been
00:25:34
Speaker 1: carried here by the wind. Here is somewhere cozy to rest.
00:25:46
Speaker 1: The breeze drops the leaf by the oak tree, and
00:25:51
Speaker 1: with a little flutter, the leaf floats down to land
00:25:57
Speaker 1: in the soft pile of leaves. The other leaves, all
00:26:04
Speaker 1: tired and yawning themselves, rustle and welcome the little leaf.
00:26:12
Speaker 1: In the morning, they will all exchange stories about how
00:26:17
Speaker 1: they came to be there, and tell each other all
00:26:22
Speaker 1: the wonderful things they've seen on their journeys. This will
00:26:28
Speaker 1: be the leaf's new family. But for now it is
00:26:34
Speaker 1: time to sleep. The leaf thanks the old man in
00:26:41
Speaker 1: the wind for taking it on this journey. You are
00:26:47
Speaker 1: most welcome, Zephya tells the leaf in his deep and
00:26:53
Speaker 1: rumbling voice. We will meet again, And as the final
00:27:03
Speaker 1: warm breath of wind passes through the air, the leaves
00:27:10
Speaker 1: or give one final yawn. The night is dark and gentle,
00:27:18
Speaker 1: and all of them, rustling quietly at the base of
00:27:23
Speaker 1: the old Oak Tree, drift off into a deep and peaceful,
