00:01:25
Speaker 1: in tonight's story, we're meeting our little friend, Hamper the Hare,
00:01:28
Speaker 1: who loves throwing huge picnics for all of his friends
00:01:31
Speaker 1: in Sleepy Forest. That's just one problem. He often runs
00:01:35
Speaker 1: out of food. Luckily, he meets a harvest fairy who
00:01:39
Speaker 1: offers a solution to his conundrum. So get comfy and
00:01:44
Speaker 1: relaxed in bed as I begin Hamper the Hare's Basket
00:01:48
Speaker 1: of Plenty by Luke Prendergast. There was nothing in the
00:01:58
Speaker 1: world that Hamper the Hair loved more than a picnic.
00:02:02
Speaker 1: He lived in a burrow on the edge of Sleepy Forest,
00:02:05
Speaker 1: and three of the four rooms in his house were
00:02:08
Speaker 1: dedicated to picnicking. The walls of his kitchen were lined
00:02:12
Speaker 1: with shelves bearing all kinds of ingredients flour, dried fruits,
00:02:17
Speaker 1: jars of pickles, little pots of spices. From the kitchen
00:02:22
Speaker 1: hung bunches of herbs that he had grown and picked
00:02:25
Speaker 1: himself from his herb garden. And on the floor could
00:02:28
Speaker 1: always be found some chocolate sprinkles he'd spilled and forgotten
00:02:32
Speaker 1: to pick up. There was always something cooking in the kitchen,
00:02:36
Speaker 1: keisches and pork pies, finger sandwiches and blueberry muffins. Sponge
00:02:43
Speaker 1: cakes and caramel brownies, and of course Hamper's personal favorite
00:02:50
Speaker 1: leak and carrot pies. Two other rooms were dedicated to
00:02:55
Speaker 1: storing even more ingredients for the food he made, along
00:02:59
Speaker 1: with the child Anywhere plates, knives and forks, blankets and napkins,
00:03:04
Speaker 1: which were absolutely essential for throwing a really good picnic.
00:03:09
Speaker 1: The final room was his bedroom, with a small bed
00:03:12
Speaker 1: and an oak wardrobe, which was the one place in
00:03:15
Speaker 1: his home that was a refuge from his picnicking antics,
00:03:19
Speaker 1: though he had to admit that from time to time
00:03:21
Speaker 1: a jar of homemade jam might find itself being stored
00:03:25
Speaker 1: on the bookshelf in his bedroom. Hamper loved throwing picnics
00:03:30
Speaker 1: so much because it meant he got to hang out
00:03:32
Speaker 1: with all of his friends. He was an incredibly generous
00:03:36
Speaker 1: young hair Everyone in Sleepy Forest said so. He would
00:03:42
Speaker 1: make special treats for each of his friends, chocolate mudpie
00:03:46
Speaker 1: for Buck the Beaver, bamboo cupcakes for Coco the Koala,
00:03:52
Speaker 1: and tiny lettuce and seed buns for Wimbley the Hamster,
00:03:56
Speaker 1: and invite them to climb the little hill that rose
00:03:59
Speaker 1: beside the forest, where they would lay out blankets watch
00:04:03
Speaker 1: the sun slowly dipping down through the sky and feast
00:04:08
Speaker 1: on all the delightful picnic foods Hamper had made. But
00:04:13
Speaker 1: there was one little problem, and it was up to
00:04:16
Speaker 1: Coco to point it out. One afternoon, Hamper had thrown
00:04:21
Speaker 1: a wonderful picnic. More animals than ever had come because
00:04:26
Speaker 1: people always wanted to bring their friends. Hamper's picnics were
00:04:30
Speaker 1: getting just that famous. Afterwards, everyone had played a game
00:04:35
Speaker 1: of rolling Poli down the hill, being at the Armadillo
00:04:39
Speaker 1: had been crowned champion because he was so good at
00:04:42
Speaker 1: rolling himself into a ball. When everyone had gone home,
00:04:47
Speaker 1: Coco stayed behind to help Hamper clear up the empty
00:04:50
Speaker 1: plates and cups. Wow, said Hamper, with a great deal
00:04:55
Speaker 1: of pride. People must have really enjoyed this picnic. Everything
00:05:02
Speaker 1: has gone, there's nothing left. Coco agreed that everyone really
00:05:09
Speaker 1: had loved the picnic. Then he stroked his chin thoughtfully
00:05:13
Speaker 1: for a moment, wondering if he should say what was
00:05:17
Speaker 1: on his mind, and he decided it was best that
00:05:20
Speaker 1: he did. Hamper, Coco said to him, You're always making
00:05:27
Speaker 1: all these wonderful picnics for everyone in Sleepy Forest, But
00:05:31
Speaker 1: the one problem is everyone seems to eat their fill
00:05:36
Speaker 1: of your delicious food except for you. I never see
00:05:42
Speaker 1: you take a single mouthful for yourself, and then there's
00:05:47
Speaker 1: never any left over at the end. Coco was right.
00:05:52
Speaker 1: While he was always very pleased that everyone had fun
00:05:55
Speaker 1: at his picnics, Hamper often went home hungry himself, where
00:06:00
Speaker 1: he whipped himself up a simple meal from whatever few
00:06:03
Speaker 1: ingredients he had left. But he said to Ko Ko
00:06:07
Speaker 1: that he didn't mind that it was more important that
00:06:10
Speaker 1: other people ate and drank and had fun. But Hamper,
00:06:16
Speaker 1: Ko Ko said gently, if you don't look after yourself,
00:06:21
Speaker 1: you can't look after every one else. Hampa thumped his
00:06:26
Speaker 1: foot against the floor. There wasn't much good arguing with
00:06:31
Speaker 1: what Ko Ko had just said. Ko Ko was clearly
00:06:35
Speaker 1: very wise. Are you saying that I should be less
00:06:41
Speaker 1: generous with other people? Hampa asked, I'm not quite saying that,
00:06:48
Speaker 1: said Ko Ko, Your generosity is absolutely wonderful. Is what
00:06:55
Speaker 1: makes you one of the best and most beloved of
00:06:58
Speaker 1: all of us living in sleepy forests. But still I
00:07:01
Speaker 1: do worry you need to be generous to yourself from
00:07:05
Speaker 1: time to time. Hamper thought about this for a few
00:07:10
Speaker 1: moments while he was thinking one of his ears, which
00:07:15
Speaker 1: usually stuck straight upwards, bent and flocked down, which is
00:07:19
Speaker 1: what the ears of hairs often do when they're trying
00:07:22
Speaker 1: to solve a problem. After a while, Hamper's pointed back
00:07:27
Speaker 1: upwards to the sky. Thank you for thinking of me, Cocoa,
00:07:33
Speaker 1: you are a true friend. I'll have us think about
00:07:38
Speaker 1: what you've said and see if there's anything to be
00:07:41
Speaker 1: done about it. And with that, once all the plates
00:07:46
Speaker 1: and cups had been cleared up and put in Hamper's
00:07:49
Speaker 1: with a basket, the two friends wave goodbye to each
00:07:52
Speaker 1: other and set off in opposite directions through sleepy forests
00:07:56
Speaker 1: to their homes. As he hopped in between the trunks
00:08:01
Speaker 1: of trees, with the dappled light of the sun filtering
00:08:04
Speaker 1: in through the leaves above, Hamper considered what Coco had
00:08:09
Speaker 1: said to him. Coco was right. Hamper often forgot to
00:08:14
Speaker 1: look after himself. But Hamper didn't want to start being
00:08:18
Speaker 1: less generous to his friends. He didn't want to cook
00:08:22
Speaker 1: less food, bake fewer cakes, or put a limit on
00:08:26
Speaker 1: how many people could come to his picnics. He didn't
00:08:29
Speaker 1: want to eat when his guests were still hungry. It
00:08:33
Speaker 1: wasn't in his nature. But then again, like Coco, said,
00:08:39
Speaker 1: he had to be generous to himself as well. Oh,
00:08:45
Speaker 1: this is a real conundrum, he said out loud, as
00:08:49
Speaker 1: he hopped past a particularly old and gnarly yew tree.
00:08:54
Speaker 1: I wish there was a way I could be generous
00:08:57
Speaker 1: to my friends and generous to myself at the same time.
00:09:03
Speaker 1: Hamper said these words out loud to himself, thinking that
00:09:07
Speaker 1: nobody was around. But as soon as he spoke them,
00:09:11
Speaker 1: he heard a strange sound coming from the old yew tree.
00:09:16
Speaker 1: It sounded like a shimmering, That's the only way he
00:09:20
Speaker 1: could describe it, like the gentlest wind passing through the
00:09:26
Speaker 1: most delicate of wind chimes. He stopped still and hopped about.
00:09:34
Speaker 1: To his surprise, out of one of the deep cracks
00:09:38
Speaker 1: in the trees dark trunk floated a fairy. She had long,
00:09:43
Speaker 1: dark hair and a dress made out of fallen leaves,
00:09:48
Speaker 1: golden and orange and brown. Around her neck was a
00:09:54
Speaker 1: necklace of thistle flowers, and on her head she wore
00:09:59
Speaker 1: a crown of old and wheat. The fairy hovered in
00:10:03
Speaker 1: the air above him and said hello, Hamper. Now, Hamper
00:10:09
Speaker 1: had often heard that there were all kinds of magical creatures,
00:10:13
Speaker 1: like fairies and warlocks, and cheeky little imps living all
00:10:18
Speaker 1: over Sleepy Forest, but he'd never actually seen one, so
00:10:24
Speaker 1: he was a little wonderstruck as he looked up at
00:10:26
Speaker 1: the fairy hanging in the air above him. Eventually, when
00:10:32
Speaker 1: he'd got over his surprise, he said, Hello, who are you?
00:10:39
Speaker 1: I'm the full Fairy, She said, I look after all
00:10:45
Speaker 1: things are terminal, like harvests and leaf falls and the
00:10:51
Speaker 1: darker colors of the sun. I heard that something was
00:10:56
Speaker 1: troubling you as you passed by my old utube, so
00:11:01
Speaker 1: I thought i'd come out and see for myself. Oh,
00:11:06
Speaker 1: said Hamper, I didn't know you were in there. I
00:11:12
Speaker 1: was only talking to myself. What was it that was
00:11:16
Speaker 1: troubling you, asked the fairy. Hamper, who was shy and
00:11:22
Speaker 1: didn't like to ask too much of others, looked away
00:11:26
Speaker 1: and held his tongue. Come on, the full Fairy said,
00:11:32
Speaker 1: tell me what's the matter, and maybe I can help you.
00:11:38
Speaker 1: It was something I think to do with your famous picnics.
00:11:44
Speaker 1: Hamper's heart swelled with pride to hear that his picnics
00:11:49
Speaker 1: were famous even among the fairies, and this gave him
00:11:53
Speaker 1: the boldness to tell the fairy the problem that Coco
00:11:57
Speaker 1: had pointed out that he was fine. It difficult to
00:12:01
Speaker 1: manage looking after his friends and looking after himself at
00:12:05
Speaker 1: the same time, you see, Hamper told her, I don't
00:12:11
Speaker 1: want to stop more people coming to the picnics, because
00:12:15
Speaker 1: I like to see everyone so happy. But the truth
00:12:19
Speaker 1: is I can't keep up. I'm always giving away my
00:12:24
Speaker 1: food and not keeping anything back for myself, Ah, said
00:12:30
Speaker 1: the fairy, nodding her head so that tiny little leaves
00:12:34
Speaker 1: fell from her hair, floating down to the ground. That
00:12:39
Speaker 1: is a conundrum. Indeed, she paused for a moment, as
00:12:44
Speaker 1: though contemplating his predicament. But she said, I think I
00:12:51
Speaker 1: have just the thing for you. You do, Hamper asked, his
00:12:57
Speaker 1: ears pricking up with hope. I do, She said, the
00:13:03
Speaker 1: cornyw copia, Hamper. The hare frowned, the corny copier. What's that?
00:13:12
Speaker 1: The fall fairy let out a tinkling laugh, covering her
00:13:16
Speaker 1: mouth with her hand. Not the corny copier, she said,
00:13:22
Speaker 1: the corn w copier. It's a magical basket of plenty.
00:13:29
Speaker 1: A magical basket of plenty, Hamper repeated curiously. Yes, the
00:13:36
Speaker 1: fairy told him, it's like the one you're carrying there,
00:13:41
Speaker 1: except it's old, as old as the forest itself, and
00:13:46
Speaker 1: when it was made, a magical spell was cast over it.
00:13:51
Speaker 1: The basket is overflowing with all kinds of delicious goodies,
00:13:57
Speaker 1: apples and oranges, chocolate, mus cucumber, sandwiches, anything your heart
00:14:04
Speaker 1: could desire. And the magic is, no matter how much
00:14:09
Speaker 1: you take from it, it will always be full. It's
00:14:14
Speaker 1: the picnic basket that never runs out. Hamper pictured the
00:14:21
Speaker 1: existence of such a basket in his mind's eye and
00:14:25
Speaker 1: was struck once again with wonder. The corn ucopia. He whispered, Wow, Wow, indeed,
00:14:37
Speaker 1: said the fool fairy. And what's more, it sounds like
00:14:42
Speaker 1: just the thing you need. Want me to show it
00:14:46
Speaker 1: to you. The fairy was right, It did sound like
00:14:51
Speaker 1: just the kind of thing Hamper needed. Her basket he
00:14:56
Speaker 1: could fill with whatever he fancied cooking, which would never
00:15:01
Speaker 1: run out, no matter how many of his friends came
00:15:05
Speaker 1: to his picnics. He told the fairy he would love
00:15:10
Speaker 1: for her to show him where it was. Okay, she said,
00:15:16
Speaker 1: we're going under ground, But then she paused and looked
00:15:21
Speaker 1: at him. There is one thing, she said, The cornucopia
00:15:28
Speaker 1: can only be held by someone who truly deserves it,
00:15:35
Speaker 1: someone who truly deserves it, said Hamper. But how would
00:15:40
Speaker 1: I know if I truly deserve it? I don't know,
00:15:45
Speaker 1: The fall Fairy said, I guess we'll have to wait
00:15:49
Speaker 1: and see. Okay, then follow me, And with those words,
00:15:55
Speaker 1: the fairy did a loop the loop in the air,
00:15:58
Speaker 1: and then flew down into there a gap between two
00:16:01
Speaker 1: of the ancient yew trees, massive knotted roots. Hamper bounced
00:16:08
Speaker 1: in after her and found himself in a tunnel that
00:16:12
Speaker 1: led deep underground. The walls of the tunnel were covered
00:16:16
Speaker 1: in a soft green moss, and the whole place smelled
00:16:21
Speaker 1: warm and earthy, rich with life and growing things. Down here,
00:16:29
Speaker 1: the fall Fairy's body let off a warm golden light,
00:16:34
Speaker 1: as though she were herself made out of a little
00:16:37
Speaker 1: piece of the sun. She flew out ahead of Hamper
00:16:41
Speaker 1: like a torch in the darkness, so he had no
00:16:44
Speaker 1: problem knowing where to go. Down, down, down they went.
00:16:52
Speaker 1: Each time, Hamper imagined they couldn't possibly go any further
00:16:57
Speaker 1: further down did they go? He must be very deep
00:17:02
Speaker 1: below the sleepy forest, now, thought Hamper. I wonder where
00:17:08
Speaker 1: the fall Fairy is taking me. Soon enough, Hamper's thoughts
00:17:14
Speaker 1: were answered, with the fall Fairy ahead of him. They
00:17:18
Speaker 1: both emerged from the tunnel into a clearing that looked
00:17:22
Speaker 1: like one of the Sleepy Forest's many glades, but Hamper
00:17:26
Speaker 1: could tell that this glade was a very magical place.
00:17:32
Speaker 1: The leaves twinkled in a silvery light that seemed to
00:17:36
Speaker 1: come from the moon, but there was no sky above them,
00:17:40
Speaker 1: just a roof of soil. The grass glistened with dew,
00:17:45
Speaker 1: and a tiny crystal stream snaked its way between the trees.
00:17:51
Speaker 1: Follow me, the fall Fairy murmured, and she floated out
00:17:56
Speaker 1: into the glade. As they went, Hamper looked up into
00:18:01
Speaker 1: the sparkling trees and saw that the branches were covered
00:18:06
Speaker 1: in dark red and purple berries. Here we are, said
00:18:12
Speaker 1: the fairy. They had stopped beside a yew tree that
00:18:15
Speaker 1: was identical to the one above ground, the one the
00:18:19
Speaker 1: fairy had flown out from, except that where the above
00:18:23
Speaker 1: ground tree was old and knotted, this one was young,
00:18:27
Speaker 1: and its bark was a golden brown color. The fairy
00:18:32
Speaker 1: pointed to the base of the tree and whispered, look
00:18:38
Speaker 1: the corn ucopia. Hamper could have gasped. His foot started
00:18:45
Speaker 1: thumping with excitement without him even asking it to do it.
00:18:51
Speaker 1: In front of them, nestled at the base of the
00:18:54
Speaker 1: young yew tree was their most beautiful picnic basket he
00:18:59
Speaker 1: could ever have imagined. Just like the yew tree, it
00:19:04
Speaker 1: was made from golden wood, and it was decorated with
00:19:08
Speaker 1: engravings of ivy and rose buds. But the beauty of
00:19:12
Speaker 1: the basket was nothing compared to what it held. It
00:19:18
Speaker 1: was overflowing with the most brilliant, most delicious looking foods
00:19:23
Speaker 1: Hamper had ever seen. Fruit and vegetables, cakes and sweet bakes, pastries,
00:19:31
Speaker 1: and everything else you could imagine, all glimmering like treasure.
00:19:37
Speaker 1: Hamper hadn't had a single bite to eat all afternoon
00:19:42
Speaker 1: because he was too busy making sure everyone else was
00:19:45
Speaker 1: well fed at his picnic, and at the sight of
00:19:49
Speaker 1: all this food, his stomach began to gurgle. You're hungry,
00:19:55
Speaker 1: said the four fairy, and Hamper couldn't deny it. He
00:20:00
Speaker 1: certainly was well. The fairy carried on, there's plenty here,
00:20:08
Speaker 1: Let me get you something, and the fall fairy swooped
00:20:13
Speaker 1: down towards the cornucopia and plucked from its many riches
00:20:18
Speaker 1: a single green pear. She flew back to Hamper and
00:20:23
Speaker 1: handed the pair to him. Hamper looked at the pair,
00:20:28
Speaker 1: which was bright and plump and juicy, and he thought
00:20:32
Speaker 1: that it was the tastiest looking pear he had ever
00:20:36
Speaker 1: set eyes upon. This was exactly what he wanted. He
00:20:42
Speaker 1: couldn't wait to sink his teeth into the perfect pear.
00:20:47
Speaker 1: He opened his mouth so his sharp little teeth showed.
00:20:52
Speaker 1: He raised his hand, holding the pear slowly to his lips,
00:20:58
Speaker 1: and it was then that he had the sound. It
00:21:02
Speaker 1: was the sound of a stomach gurgling, but very curiously,
00:21:08
Speaker 1: it wasn't his own. He paused what he was doing.
00:21:12
Speaker 1: He didn't take the bite of the pear. He looked
00:21:15
Speaker 1: up at the fall Fairy, who was hovering in the air,
00:21:19
Speaker 1: and realized it was her stomach that had gurgled. The
00:21:24
Speaker 1: Fall Fairy must be hungry, and her hunger must have
00:21:29
Speaker 1: been made worse by the prospect of seeing him sink
00:21:32
Speaker 1: his teeth into this delicious pear, and in that moment,
00:21:39
Speaker 1: Hamper decided not to eat the pear. Instead, he held
00:21:44
Speaker 1: it out to the fall Fairy. There we go, he
00:21:49
Speaker 1: said to her, you go first, please, smiling curiously, She
00:21:56
Speaker 1: flew back down and took the pear back from him.
00:22:00
Speaker 1: Then she hovered in the air holding it, looking down
00:22:05
Speaker 1: at him mysteriously. Then she broke into a big, pearly smile,
00:22:12
Speaker 1: Hamper the hair. She said, you truly are the most
00:22:19
Speaker 1: generous creature in all of Sleepy Forest. And because you
00:22:26
Speaker 1: are so generous, and because you offered me to eat
00:22:31
Speaker 1: this pear before you took it yourself, you've proven yourself
00:22:37
Speaker 1: deserving of the basket of plenty. And with these words,
00:22:43
Speaker 1: she threw the pear high into the air, and by
00:22:47
Speaker 1: the time it fell and hit the ground, it had
00:22:51
Speaker 1: multiplied into dozens of pears. The cornucopia, the fall Fairy said,
00:23:00
Speaker 1: joyfully as it rained down fruit around them, is yours,
00:23:07
Speaker 1: almost bursting with happiness, Hamper the hare hopped forward and
00:23:13
Speaker 1: plucked up the basket of Plenty from where it lay.
00:23:18
Speaker 1: It was surprisingly light, even with all that food in it.
00:23:24
Speaker 1: The Fall Fairy led him back through the tunnel they'd
00:23:28
Speaker 1: come down in, glowing up ahead of him as he
00:23:32
Speaker 1: carried the golden basket up to the forest floor. When
00:23:37
Speaker 1: they reached the surface, Hamper thanked the fairy for helping
00:23:42
Speaker 1: solve his problem. You don't need to thank me, the
00:23:47
Speaker 1: fall Fairy said to him. The basket of plenty is
00:23:52
Speaker 1: now yours. That is the world's way of thanking you.
00:23:58
Speaker 1: You see, Hamper, she said, the world will always reward
00:24:04
Speaker 1: generous spirits. If you look after others, the world will
00:24:10
Speaker 1: make sure it looks after you. She smiled down at
00:24:15
Speaker 1: him proudly. Now she said, off you go, it's almost
00:24:23
Speaker 1: my bedtime, and with one final shake of tiny leaves
00:24:29
Speaker 1: from her hair, she turned and flew into the trunk
00:24:34
Speaker 1: of the yew tree. Thank you, Hamper whispered once more.
00:24:40
Speaker 1: After the fairy had gone, he ate a plump pear,
00:24:45
Speaker 1: a jam sandwich, and a potato pie on the way home,
00:24:50
Speaker 1: and the treats were just as delicious as the ones
00:24:52
Speaker 1: he made himself. A few days later, Hamper the hare
00:24:59
Speaker 1: through a nut the picnic on the hill beside Sleepy Forest.
00:25:04
Speaker 1: He invited everyone he could, and when his guests asked
00:25:08
Speaker 1: if they could bring their friends, he replied, yes, of course.
00:25:13
Speaker 1: The more the merrier. When he revealed the basket of plenty,
00:25:20
Speaker 1: everyone clapped and cheered. They said it was the most
00:25:25
Speaker 1: beautiful basket they'd ever seen, and everyone was very impressed
00:25:30
Speaker 1: by its magical abilities. They ate and ate and ate,
00:25:37
Speaker 1: and the basket never seemed to get any emptier. They
00:25:43
Speaker 1: ate until they were all completely full, and all the
00:25:47
Speaker 1: guests went home happier and more satisfied than they'd ever
00:25:52
Speaker 1: been before. As usual, Coco the Koala stayed behind with
00:25:59
Speaker 1: Humper to help clear up Hamper. Coco said, it was
00:26:06
Speaker 1: so good to see you enjoying the food as well
00:26:10
Speaker 1: as everyone else today. Hamper agreed with him. He'd enjoyed
00:26:15
Speaker 1: being able to eat without fear of it running out,
00:26:19
Speaker 1: and now he was so stuffed he couldn't imagine eating
00:26:24
Speaker 1: another mouthful. We've got the corner Copia to thank for that,
00:26:31
Speaker 1: Hamper said, Oh no, Coco told his friend, we have
00:26:38
Speaker 1: you to thank for that. You really do throw the
00:26:42
Speaker 1: best parties in the whole wide world. Hamper brimmed with pride.
00:26:48
Speaker 1: Soon they had finished clearing up, the sun was setting
00:26:53
Speaker 1: over the crest of the hill, and after that bit
00:26:56
Speaker 1: of work, Hamper felt that maybe he could managed just
00:27:01
Speaker 1: one more mouthful. Hey, Coco, he said, how about one
00:27:09
Speaker 1: final jam donut before we go home. Coco didn't have
00:27:15
Speaker 1: to think about it for too long. Yes, please, he said,
00:27:21
Speaker 1: And so the two friends, Hamper and Cocoa, sat on
00:27:26
Speaker 1: the side of the hill. The golden basket of plenty
00:27:31
Speaker 1: overflowing beside them, and enjoyed a jam donut together as
00:27:37
Speaker 1: the sun set slowly over sleepy forest
