Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Kuala Moon, a podcast of

00:00:14

Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime

00:00:19

Speaker 1: a dream. I love the word extravaganza. It sounds very

00:00:27

Speaker 1: celebratory and happy and reminds me of our brilliant Hector

00:00:31

Speaker 1: and Sunny Reader long book. If you haven't tried it

00:00:35

Speaker 1: out yet, perhaps ask an adult over the Christmas period.

00:00:38

Speaker 1: If they can show you you'll be able to follow

00:00:41

Speaker 1: the words with your finger. As you listen. You can

00:00:43

Speaker 1: look at the pictures of Hector and Sonny on their adventure,

00:00:47

Speaker 1: and you can turn the pages and push the special

00:00:50

Speaker 1: sound effects buttons on each page. It's a lot of fun.

00:00:54

Speaker 1: We've made the link free for everyone until Christmas, so

00:00:57

Speaker 1: it's in the show notes to this episode. Back to

00:01:01

Speaker 1: tonight's extravaganza now, though soon we're joining Littlefoot the Yeti

00:01:07

Speaker 1: and Snowbell the snow Bear at Christmas time. Although Littlefoot

00:01:12

Speaker 1: doesn't know it's Christmas time, he and his family have

00:01:16

Speaker 1: clean forgotten. Luckily, Snowbell comes over to give him a reminder,

00:01:22

Speaker 1: and the two of them head to the market to

00:01:24

Speaker 1: meet the elves and get Littlefoot's home ready for Christmas.

00:01:28

Speaker 1: So get cozy snuggle up, and I'll begin Littlefoot's Christmas

00:01:34

Speaker 1: Extravaganza by Luke Prendergast. One cold and wintry morning, Littlefoot

00:01:46

Speaker 1: the YETI sat at the mouth of the cave he

00:01:48

Speaker 1: and his family lived in, high up in the mountains.

00:01:53

Speaker 1: It was particularly chilly this morning. Overnight, heavy snow had fallen,

00:01:58

Speaker 1: and now it lay thick and pristine over the mountainside,

00:02:03

Speaker 1: like a sparkling blanket of the deepest white laid over

00:02:07

Speaker 1: the whole landscape, cold and beautiful. But even though it

00:02:13

Speaker 1: was chilly, Littlefoot didn't mind. He was made for this

00:02:17

Speaker 1: kind of weather. He had dense fur that kept him

00:02:21

Speaker 1: super warm no matter what, and he had built himself

00:02:25

Speaker 1: a little fire with glowing embers and a little wisp

00:02:29

Speaker 1: of smoke, which he stoked with a stick. Every now

00:02:33

Speaker 1: and then he'd hold his hands to the fire and

00:02:35

Speaker 1: feel its warmth on his palms. Littlefoot was thinking about

00:02:42

Speaker 1: all of his favorite foods in the world. He was

00:02:46

Speaker 1: thinking about delicious pies filled with spinach and cheese, and

00:02:52

Speaker 1: croissants and pastries. He was thinking of fizzing sherbets and

00:02:58

Speaker 1: flying saucers and andy floss. But most of all, he

00:03:04

Speaker 1: was thinking about spaghetti. Spaghetti, How indescribably delicious. It had

00:03:14

Speaker 1: been so long since Littlefoot had last had some spaghetti.

00:03:18

Speaker 1: He hoped that he'd get to have some soon. In fact,

00:03:23

Speaker 1: Littlefoot was so absorbed thinking about all the foods he'd

00:03:27

Speaker 1: like to eat that he didn't even hear his best friend,

00:03:31

Speaker 1: a kind hearted snow bear called Snowbell, arriving at the

00:03:36

Speaker 1: entrance of his cave, until she cleared her throat and said, hello,

00:03:45

Speaker 1: littlefurt Earth to littlefot Wow, she said with a giggle

00:03:52

Speaker 1: once she'd got his attention, Where were you off to?

00:03:56

Speaker 1: It looked like you were having a super time off

00:04:00

Speaker 1: in some far away imaginary land. Oh I was, said

00:04:05

Speaker 1: Littlefoot with a grin. I was thinking about spaghetti. Snowbell

00:04:12

Speaker 1: laughed and shook her head. Her friend, Littlefoot was always

00:04:18

Speaker 1: thinking about spaghetti, Littlefoot, she said, peering around his home,

00:04:26

Speaker 1: where are all your decorations? Littlefoot simply stared at her

00:04:33

Speaker 1: with a little frown of confusion on his face. Oh, Littlefoot,

00:04:40

Speaker 1: Snowbell said, don't tell me you don't have any decorations.

00:04:47

Speaker 1: Don't you know what time of year it is? Littlefoot

00:04:52

Speaker 1: simply shook his head. It's Christmas time. Littlefoot tapped his

00:05:00

Speaker 1: head with his hand. How silly of him, How could

00:05:05

Speaker 1: he have forgotten? How could his whole family have forgotten

00:05:10

Speaker 1: that it was Christmas time? But thankfully snow Bell was

00:05:15

Speaker 1: here to help him out. She told him that just

00:05:19

Speaker 1: down the mountainside, the elves were throwing a Christmas fate.

00:05:24

Speaker 1: There's all kinds of things to do there, she said.

00:05:28

Speaker 1: Christmas activities and other kinds are festive fun. And I'm

00:05:35

Speaker 1: sure we'll be able to find you some decorations at

00:05:38

Speaker 1: the market. And she said, with a little wink, I'm

00:05:43

Speaker 1: sure they'll be spaghetti too. Littlefoot's eyes lit up. So

00:05:50

Speaker 1: what do you say, snow Bell asked him, want to

00:05:54

Speaker 1: go with me? Littlefoot jumped to his feet so quickly

00:05:58

Speaker 1: he disturbed a snowdrip that had been balancing on the roof,

00:06:02

Speaker 1: which promptly slipped off and landed on his head. Oh yes,

00:06:07

Speaker 1: he said, brushing the flakes of snow off his head

00:06:11

Speaker 1: and shoulders. I most definitely would. Littlefoot nipped inside to

00:06:18

Speaker 1: fetch a bright blue scarf, which he wrapped around his neck,

00:06:22

Speaker 1: and a handful of pocket money to spend on decorations

00:06:26

Speaker 1: at the market. He called goodbye to his family, and

00:06:30

Speaker 1: then he and Snowbell made their way down the snowy

00:06:35

Speaker 1: track which led down to the market. As they went

00:06:39

Speaker 1: they chatted merrily about all sorts of things, as best

00:06:43

Speaker 1: friends often do. Down the mountain, they trod with the

00:06:49

Speaker 1: whole of the valleys spread out and sparkling before them,

00:06:53

Speaker 1: until at last, around a bend in the path they

00:06:58

Speaker 1: spotted the Christmas Fate. It was a higgordy piggledy bunch

00:07:04

Speaker 1: of wooden huts, with fairy lights twinkling over the roofs,

00:07:08

Speaker 1: and all sorts of delicious sweet smells wafting through the air.

00:07:15

Speaker 1: In the middle of the cluster of huts rose a

00:07:18

Speaker 1: perfect Christmas tree, its branches dusted with snow, and a big,

00:07:25

Speaker 1: bright silver star perched on the top. As Littlefoot and

00:07:31

Speaker 1: Snowbell entered the market, they saw that at each stall

00:07:35

Speaker 1: stood a Christmas Elf dressed in red and green. Other

00:07:40

Speaker 1: elves walked to and fro, giving directions or helping out visitors,

00:07:46

Speaker 1: or carrying boxes of gifts from one hut to another.

00:07:52

Speaker 1: One elf came up to Littlefoot and Snowbell. He was

00:07:55

Speaker 1: wearing a pointy red hat with a bell on the

00:07:58

Speaker 1: end which jingles whenever he moved his head. Hello, said

00:08:04

Speaker 1: the elf. My name is Ralph, and I'm here to

00:08:08

Speaker 1: help you with whatever you need from our Christmas six

00:08:11

Speaker 1: stravaganza this year. Littlefoot and Snowbell gave Ralph a wave

00:08:18

Speaker 1: and introduced themselves. We're here to look for some decorations,

00:08:23

Speaker 1: Snowbell explained, among lots of other things, with a big

00:08:28

Speaker 1: smile and a jingle of his pointy hat. Ralph assured

00:08:32

Speaker 1: them that there were plenty of decorations available at the

00:08:35

Speaker 1: Ornament Store. But first he told them it was almost

00:08:39

Speaker 1: time for the sledging event. Or would you like to

00:08:43

Speaker 1: take part, he asked. Littlefoot and Snowbell exchanged a curious look.

00:08:51

Speaker 1: Could you tell us a little bit more about the event,

00:08:55

Speaker 1: Littleford asked. Ralph said he'd be delighted. He pointed up

00:09:02

Speaker 1: the white hillside to a point where they could see

00:09:05

Speaker 1: two large yellow flags and lots of people gathering beneath them.

00:09:11

Speaker 1: It's kind of like a race, Ralph explained, except there

00:09:17

Speaker 1: are no winners and no losers. It's really just for fun. Well,

00:09:24

Speaker 1: there was nothing that Littlefoot and Snowbell liked more than fun,

00:09:29

Speaker 1: so they told Ralph they'd love to take part, the

00:09:33

Speaker 1: bear on his hat, ringing with every step, and snow

00:09:37

Speaker 1: crunching beneath his feet. Ralph led them behind the market

00:09:42

Speaker 1: stools into a track that went up the hillside. As

00:09:46

Speaker 1: they approached where the sledge race would begin, they saw

00:09:50

Speaker 1: the other participants more clearly. A hair with pointy ears

00:09:55

Speaker 1: in a bright pink ski suit, a moose with tinsel

00:09:59

Speaker 1: wrap all around her antlers, and a flamingo wearing black

00:10:04

Speaker 1: snow boots to keep his feet nice and toasty. Littlefoot

00:10:09

Speaker 1: and Snowbell said hello to them all, and they sent

00:10:12

Speaker 1: back friendly waves. First, Ralph led them to a long

00:10:17

Speaker 1: row of sledges to select which ones they will use.

00:10:22

Speaker 1: To Littlefoot he gave a large wooden sledge, and for Snowbell,

00:10:27

Speaker 1: who was much smaller than her friend, he chose a

00:10:30

Speaker 1: purple one, sprinkled with lots of glitter. Oh perfect, said Snowbell,

00:10:37

Speaker 1: looking happily upon her chosen sledge. Her whistle blew across

00:10:42

Speaker 1: the hillside, and they turned to see another elf holding

00:10:46

Speaker 1: a black and white checkered flag and clenching a whistle

00:10:50

Speaker 1: between her teeth. She was obviously the organizer of the

00:10:54

Speaker 1: sledge race. The elf dropped the whistle from her teeth

00:10:58

Speaker 1: so it dangled from a string around her neck, and

00:11:02

Speaker 1: told everyone that the race was about to commence. Find

00:11:08

Speaker 1: your starting positions, please, she said. The participants lined up

00:11:15

Speaker 1: in a long line between the two starting flags. Both

00:11:19

Speaker 1: Littlefoot and Snowbell were beginning to feel little bubbles of

00:11:23

Speaker 1: excitement to flutter through their chests. From up here, the

00:11:28

Speaker 1: slope looked steep, but not too steep. This was going

00:11:33

Speaker 1: to be a lot of fun. The hair zipped up

00:11:38

Speaker 1: his ski suit. The moose tossed her head in preparation.

00:11:43

Speaker 1: All of them took a deep breath and sat themselves

00:11:48

Speaker 1: on their sledges, making sure to keep their feet dug

00:11:52

Speaker 1: into the snow so they didn't shoot off too early.

00:11:56

Speaker 1: Have fun, Littlefoot whispered to Snowbell. The elf rose her

00:12:03

Speaker 1: checkered flag into the air. Are you ready? She called out,

00:12:10

Speaker 1: three two one. With a blow of a whistle, the

00:12:17

Speaker 1: flag fell. The race had begun. Whee Littlefoot kicked off,

00:12:25

Speaker 1: but already the others had shot off in clouds of snow.

00:12:30

Speaker 1: Snowbell was just in front of him, bumping along down

00:12:34

Speaker 1: the hill, and the hare was out in front. How exhilarating,

00:12:40

Speaker 1: thought Littlefoot, how thrilling to feel the wind in his

00:12:45

Speaker 1: fur and the sledge beneath him slipping and hopping over

00:12:51

Speaker 1: the drifts of snow. Faster and faster he went, picking

00:12:56

Speaker 1: up speed as he woo washed down hill. Snow Bell

00:13:01

Speaker 1: was in line with the ski suited hair now shooting

00:13:05

Speaker 1: over the snow, but Littlefoot himself was gaining on them,

00:13:10

Speaker 1: and all together they flew over the finish line. Whoosh,

00:13:17

Speaker 1: that was so much fun. When they'd all finished dusting

00:13:23

Speaker 1: the snow off them and lining their sledges back up

00:13:26

Speaker 1: in line, there was the sound of a bell ringing,

00:13:30

Speaker 1: and Ralph the Elf strolled up to them. He asked

00:13:35

Speaker 1: Littlefoot and snow Bell if they had enjoyed their sledging,

00:13:38

Speaker 1: and they told him that they did very much. Indeed,

00:13:44

Speaker 1: now it's time for us to head to the market,

00:13:48

Speaker 1: said Snowbell, to look for those decorations. Oh yes, of course.

00:13:56

Speaker 1: Ralph agreed. But first, and he put finger in the air,

00:14:01

Speaker 1: I wondered if you'd like to come to our snow

00:14:06

Speaker 1: painting event. Snow painting, snow Bell repeated, she'd never heard

00:14:14

Speaker 1: of such a thing before. Luckily, Ralph was there, ready

00:14:18

Speaker 1: to explain snow painting is just what it sounds like

00:14:24

Speaker 1: on the tin, he said. Big buckets of snow paint

00:14:29

Speaker 1: and oodles of snow, he added, gesturing all around them.

00:14:35

Speaker 1: Why don't you come and have a look. Littlefoot, for one,

00:14:40

Speaker 1: was very intrigued about this snow painting. Let's go and

00:14:45

Speaker 1: have a look, he said to snow Bell, and after

00:14:49

Speaker 1: that we can go and look for decorations. Snowbell agreed,

00:14:54

Speaker 1: and the two friends followed Ralph down the hill. Crunch, crunch, crunch.

00:15:01

Speaker 1: Ralph led them around the market to a broad flat

00:15:05

Speaker 1: meadow covered with a perfect layer of fresh snow, just

00:15:10

Speaker 1: like he told them. Along the side of the meadow

00:15:14

Speaker 1: were a series of big pots of paint, red and yellow,

00:15:19

Speaker 1: and green and blue and every other color you could

00:15:23

Speaker 1: ever imagine. Another elf appeared, this one in white overalls

00:15:30

Speaker 1: stained all over with splodges of paint. Hello, she said,

00:15:36

Speaker 1: my name is Patch, and I oversee this snow painting

00:15:40

Speaker 1: field here. Have you come to have a go at

00:15:43

Speaker 1: snow painting? Littlefoot and Snowbell nodded enthusiastically. Yes, They told

00:15:50

Speaker 1: her that was exactly what they were there for. Patch

00:15:55

Speaker 1: the elf explained to them that snow painting was simple

00:16:01

Speaker 1: all they had to do was dip their paws or hands,

00:16:05

Speaker 1: their flippers or feet, depending on whatever they found at

00:16:09

Speaker 1: the end of their arms, into the pots of paint,

00:16:13

Speaker 1: and then set to work on the snow. The snow

00:16:17

Speaker 1: is like a blank canvas, she said, with a big grin,

00:16:22

Speaker 1: And you are the artists, Okay, then off you go.

00:16:28

Speaker 1: The two friends approached the pots of paint, both of

00:16:32

Speaker 1: them contemplating deeply what it is they might paint. They

00:16:37

Speaker 1: stroked their chins and scratched their heads, and then Snowbell said, Aha.

00:16:46

Speaker 1: She dipped her paw into a paint pot, red first.

00:16:51

Speaker 1: Then she ran out onto the snow and drew her

00:16:54

Speaker 1: paint covered paw in a wide arc over it. Then

00:16:59

Speaker 1: she ran back to the pots and dipped her pour

00:17:02

Speaker 1: into another one, orange this time, and drew a broad

00:17:08

Speaker 1: arch of that on the snow. Back and forth she

00:17:12

Speaker 1: went yellow, green, blue, and finally purple. At last, when

00:17:21

Speaker 1: her painting was complete, she stood back and admired her handiwork.

00:17:27

Speaker 1: Oh cool, snow Bell said, Littlefoot, patting her on the back.

00:17:33

Speaker 1: A snow rainbow. That's awesome, Thank you, Littlefoot, she said.

00:17:42

Speaker 1: She had to agree. It did look awesome. Now, she said,

00:17:49

Speaker 1: what are you going to paint? While watching Snowbell paint

00:17:54

Speaker 1: her snow rainbow, Littlefoot had come up with an idea

00:17:59

Speaker 1: of what he was going to paint, so off he

00:18:02

Speaker 1: went to the pots of paints and dipped his big,

00:18:05

Speaker 1: fury yetty hands in one by one, smearing the colors

00:18:11

Speaker 1: all over a fresh patch of snow. It didn't take

00:18:15

Speaker 1: him very long at all, and once he'd applied the

00:18:18

Speaker 1: finishing touches, Littlefoot stood back with his hands on his hips.

00:18:24

Speaker 1: Nice work, Littlefoot, Snowbell said, that's a pretty delicious looking

00:18:32

Speaker 1: plate of snow paint spaghetti, all covered in a tomato

00:18:38

Speaker 1: sauce and lots of cheese. Littlefoot thanked her. He was

00:18:45

Speaker 1: pretty proud of it. Those are two excellent snow paintings,

00:18:52

Speaker 1: Patch the alf said, nodding at them admiringly. You should

00:18:57

Speaker 1: do a few more. You're both naturals. So Littlefoot and

00:19:04

Speaker 1: Snowbell tucked their hands and paws back into the snow

00:19:08

Speaker 1: paints and swiped them across the snow until the meadow

00:19:14

Speaker 1: was covered with all kinds of pictures Christmas trees and angels,

00:19:21

Speaker 1: fairies and birthday cakes. Finally, they did a portrait of

00:19:26

Speaker 1: each other, holding hands across the snow. When they were done,

00:19:32

Speaker 1: they thanked Patch profusely. That was great fun, they said. Now,

00:19:41

Speaker 1: said Snowbell, when they had crunched their way back over

00:19:44

Speaker 1: to Ralph, I think it's time we get to that market.

00:19:49

Speaker 1: We've got decorations to buy. We sure do, Littlefoot agreed perfect.

00:19:58

Speaker 1: Ralph said with a smile. Now's just the right time

00:20:02

Speaker 1: for the market. Ralph led them away from the meadow

00:20:07

Speaker 1: of snow and back into the market. When they reached

00:20:12

Speaker 1: the center of it, with the smell of cinnamon and

00:20:15

Speaker 1: spices and hot fruit cake drifting all around them, he

00:20:20

Speaker 1: pointed them in the direction of a certain stall, which

00:20:24

Speaker 1: bore a sign saying ornament store. That's the one, he said,

00:20:31

Speaker 1: good luck. The two friends went up to the ornament's

00:20:36

Speaker 1: store and said hello to the elf who stood behind

00:20:39

Speaker 1: the counter. We're here for some decorations, they told him. Well,

00:20:45

Speaker 1: you've come to the right place, he said, Just have

00:20:49

Speaker 1: a browse and let me know what you'd like. Little

00:20:55

Speaker 1: Foot and Snowbell wandered around the little wooden store, which,

00:20:59

Speaker 1: much to their surprise, was packed full of every conceivable

00:21:04

Speaker 1: kind of decorations. They sifted their way through everything there was,

00:21:10

Speaker 1: and finally came back to the counter bearing armfuls of decorations.

00:21:18

Speaker 1: Oh yeah, said the store elf, you've done well well.

00:21:24

Speaker 1: They certainly had to agree with him. They were very

00:21:28

Speaker 1: pleased with their haul. They'd found dreams of tinsel, some

00:21:34

Speaker 1: ball balls to hang on a tree, and daisy chains

00:21:37

Speaker 1: of little elves holding hands to string up over the entrance.

00:21:42

Speaker 1: They'd also found a perfect wreath woven with holly and ivy,

00:21:49

Speaker 1: and a blow up reindeer with a bright red nose

00:21:53

Speaker 1: to put up outside. The store elf rang it all

00:22:00

Speaker 1: up on the till. Then Littlefoot handed over a few coins.

00:22:06

Speaker 1: He thanked the elf, picked up the bags full of

00:22:10

Speaker 1: everything they purchased, and together he and Snowball left the

00:22:14

Speaker 1: ornament store. Well, Littlefoot said, that's us. I guess it's

00:22:23

Speaker 1: time for us to head back home and put these up.

00:22:29

Speaker 1: Hold up, Littlefoot, Snowbell said, with a smile. Aren't you

00:22:35

Speaker 1: forgetting something? Littlefoot frowned, am I? He said, what on

00:22:44

Speaker 1: earth could I be forgetting? Snowbell put her paw to

00:22:50

Speaker 1: her mouth and chuckled. My my, She said, you are

00:22:56

Speaker 1: a forgetful yetty look, and she pointed with her pour

00:23:02

Speaker 1: across the way to a store that Littlefoot hadn't spotted yet.

00:23:08

Speaker 1: Littlefoot's eyes opened wide. Oh, of course, he said, how

00:23:17

Speaker 1: could I forget there? Directly opposite them was a wooden

00:23:23

Speaker 1: stall with steam rising out of the front of it.

00:23:28

Speaker 1: But it was the sign that had made Littlefoot so excited,

00:23:33

Speaker 1: festive spaghetti. It said, in big red letters, Want to go,

00:23:40

Speaker 1: Snowbell asked him, with a twinkle in her eye. Of

00:23:44

Speaker 1: course she already knew the answer. So the two pals,

00:23:49

Speaker 1: after their long day of sledging and snow painting and

00:23:54

Speaker 1: buying Christmas decorations, took their seats in the festive spaghetti

00:24:00

Speaker 1: store and were delighted when an elf in a tall

00:24:05

Speaker 1: white chef's hat brought them two huge portions of festive spaghetti. Wow,

00:24:14

Speaker 1: they both sighed. The festive spaghetti certainly was a sight

00:24:20

Speaker 1: to behold. The rigginy strands of pasta were in every

00:24:26

Speaker 1: color of the rainbow, just like the snow painting that

00:24:29

Speaker 1: Snowbell had produced earlier, And all the way through the

00:24:35

Speaker 1: pasta were delicious little sweets in all sorts of Christmasy shapes,

00:24:42

Speaker 1: chocolate reindeers and iced holly berries, candy canes and miniature toffee.

00:24:49

Speaker 1: Santa hats Well, said the head chef, alf. Don't just

00:24:57

Speaker 1: look at it, go on one, have a taste. So

00:25:03

Speaker 1: they tucked their forks in and had a big mouthful

00:25:08

Speaker 1: of festive spaghetti. Ah. They both sighed, nodding at the elf.

00:25:18

Speaker 1: It's absolutely delicious. And so the two friends, Littlefoot the

00:25:26

Speaker 1: Yetti and Snowbell the snow Bear, enjoyed a well deserved

00:25:32

Speaker 1: meal of festive spaghetti, and while they ate, they reminisced

00:25:38

Speaker 1: about the fabulous day they'd shared at the Christmas extravaganza.

00:25:44

Speaker 1: Let's go every year, Littlefoot said, and Snowbell agreed. Eat up, though, Littlefoot,

00:25:53

Speaker 1: she added, we need to get back to your cave.

00:25:57

Speaker 1: We've got lots of decorations to get up before your

00:26:01

Speaker 1: family comes home. What a lovely idea, thought Littlefoot as

00:26:08

Speaker 1: he finished up his spaghetti. What a surprise that would

00:26:15

Speaker 1: be for his family when they got home.
