00:00:23
Speaker 1: the supercast link in the show notes. Anyway, here's a
00:00:27
Speaker 1: preview of this very special episode. Every year, at about
00:00:39
Speaker 1: this time, for as long as the universe has existed,
00:00:43
Speaker 1: and that is of course a terribly long time. Indeed,
00:00:46
Speaker 1: the planets get together for their annual party. They invite
00:00:50
Speaker 1: the comets and the constellations, the moons and the meteors,
00:00:55
Speaker 1: but they're really all side shows. For it's the planets
00:00:58
Speaker 1: that are on this occasion the true stars of the show.
00:01:03
Speaker 1: A few years ago, invitations were sent out to the
00:01:06
Speaker 1: newest beings floating around in the sky, the spiky satellites,
00:01:10
Speaker 1: but they were never particularly pleasant individuals, all boasting about
00:01:15
Speaker 1: how much information they could send and how quickly, and
00:01:19
Speaker 1: not at all focused on being beautiful and peaceful, drifting
00:01:24
Speaker 1: through space on a path decided millions of years ago.
00:01:29
Speaker 1: There are times when there are more shooting stars in
00:01:31
Speaker 1: the night sky than any other night, when stars fly
00:01:35
Speaker 1: across the sky and then drop and disappear forever. There
00:01:40
Speaker 1: are times when the Northern Lights dance greener and pinker
00:01:44
Speaker 1: and brighter than ever before, swirling and whirling in huge
00:01:49
Speaker 1: swoops across the snow and ice of the Arctic Circle.
00:01:53
Speaker 1: There are times when the full moon is somehow larger
00:01:57
Speaker 1: than ever, a vast disks of blue hued light floating
00:02:03
Speaker 1: through the dark sky. And when all of these come together,
00:02:09
Speaker 1: when the shooting stars and the northern lights and the
00:02:12
Speaker 1: full moon are all simultaneously at their biggest and brightest,
00:02:17
Speaker 1: their best and boldest, that is when the planets are
00:02:22
Speaker 1: getting together. The planets arrive in the same order as
00:02:27
Speaker 1: they line up from the sun, with that same sun
00:02:31
Speaker 1: now a deep red of a sunset slipping over the
00:02:35
Speaker 1: horizon at the end of the day, announcing their arrival
00:02:38
Speaker 1: at the gathering. The first is little Mercury, sliding in
00:02:44
Speaker 1: from the shadows in a silvery dress that floats around
00:02:48
Speaker 1: her in wisps and worlds. She's followed by Venus, dressed
00:02:52
Speaker 1: in white, her wedding gown that drift slowly in the
00:02:56
Speaker 1: strange winds of the universe. There's Earth, who is of
00:03:02
Speaker 1: course in the bright blue of her oceans and the
00:03:05
Speaker 1: deep green of peaceful lands. Mars is in a deep
00:03:10
Speaker 1: dusky red dress, the same color as the darkest cherries
00:03:15
Speaker 1: found hidden in the deepest forests. Neptune and Urinus follow,
00:03:21
Speaker 1: each clad in blue, one light, one dark, each shimmering
00:03:26
Speaker 1: and shining as they line up to be presented to
00:03:29
Speaker 1: the party. Jupiter and Saturn have perhaps the most glamorous
00:03:35
Speaker 1: of the dresses, with ornamental belts picked out in reds
00:03:40
Speaker 1: and oranges that seem to dance and float with a
00:03:43
Speaker 1: perpetual meandering motion. Finally, it comes Pluto, the smallest of
00:03:52
Speaker 1: them all. She's the shy, quiet planet who arrives blushing
00:03:58
Speaker 1: as deeper red as her dress, glinting with coppery scenes,
00:04:03
Speaker 1: and shining in places as if adorned with diamonds. Listen
