Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Kohala Moon, your podcast of
00:00:14
Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime
00:00:19
Speaker 1: a dream. Before we start tonight's story, a huge hello
00:00:24
Speaker 1: is going out across the world to all of our
00:00:27
Speaker 1: newest Coco Club members. Hello, Ruby and Marlowe from Lake Tahoe,
00:00:31
Speaker 1: Evelyn and Jonah in Missouri, Caziah and Nicodemus and siblings
00:00:36
Speaker 1: Freddie Iris Seren in Australia, oh and Amaya and Noah
00:00:41
Speaker 1: in Scotland, and Axel from Switzerland. What Omega list today? Now,
00:00:47
Speaker 1: I've got an important announcement to make about something extremely
00:00:51
Speaker 1: exciting coming up. Always more exciting things on this podcast.
00:00:55
Speaker 1: Over on Supercast, this week we will be hosting an
00:00:59
Speaker 1: aka or Ask Cocoa anything. We did one with Sunny.
00:01:03
Speaker 1: Do you remember you are some brilliantly inquisitive questions that time. Well,
00:01:08
Speaker 1: now it's your chance to ask our fairy little gray
00:01:11
Speaker 1: friend Cocoa any question you want, and with all of
00:01:15
Speaker 1: his answers, we'll create a special mini episode so you
00:01:20
Speaker 1: can learn even more about him. I mean, we all
00:01:22
Speaker 1: know that he loves to sing and boogie along to Swifty,
00:01:26
Speaker 1: He loves to play his ukulele and that his new
00:01:29
Speaker 1: favorite snack is bamboo pancakes. That's right, but there must
00:01:34
Speaker 1: be so many more things you'd like to know about him.
00:01:36
Speaker 1: And if you're thinking of joining the Cocoa Club, now
00:01:40
Speaker 1: is definitely the time. The link for this is in
00:01:44
Speaker 1: the show notes and I can't wait to hear your questions. Okay, well,
00:01:48
Speaker 1: let's get back to tonight's episode now. Tonight's story is
00:01:52
Speaker 1: unusual and very very sweet. In fact, it even features sweets.
00:01:58
Speaker 1: You know, candy. We're going to soon meet two very
00:02:02
Speaker 1: close friends and join them on their journey to a cozy,
00:02:05
Speaker 1: little sweet shop in their town. I can't wait to
00:02:08
Speaker 1: get started, and I'm sure it's going to relax and
00:02:11
Speaker 1: soothe you from the moment it begins, and soon you'll
00:02:15
Speaker 1: be floating away on clouds made of marshmallow and dreaming
00:02:19
Speaker 1: of sweet nothing. Take a deep breath and snuggle down.
00:02:24
Speaker 1: This is Marshmallow Clouds by Jane Thomas. Forrest lives behind
00:02:38
Speaker 1: the blue door at number forty two. He's the one
00:02:42
Speaker 1: with the mass of red hair who walks around with
00:02:44
Speaker 1: a pair of binoculars slung around his neck, and he
00:02:47
Speaker 1: is constantly naming birds that are so distant in the sky,
00:02:51
Speaker 1: they're merely a hint of a black speck a jack door,
00:02:56
Speaker 1: he'll call out, while everyone around nods their head in
00:02:59
Speaker 1: agreement and mumbles things like ooh, yes, of course, a
00:03:04
Speaker 1: jackdaw quite obvious. Really, yes, that's Forest. And Brooke lives
00:03:10
Speaker 1: behind the red door at number forty four. She's the
00:03:14
Speaker 1: girl who always has a basketball with her, who can
00:03:18
Speaker 1: dash towards the hoop and in one, two, three easy bounces,
00:03:22
Speaker 1: will always throw it through. Brooke never misses a shot.
00:03:28
Speaker 1: She's also the girl in a wheelchair, but nobody knows
00:03:31
Speaker 1: her as that. They know her as the girl with
00:03:34
Speaker 1: the basketball, and they know her as the one they
00:03:37
Speaker 1: want on their team. Brook is the sort who's always
00:03:42
Speaker 1: picked first for a team, and Forrest is the sort
00:03:45
Speaker 1: who's always picked last. He's too likely to get distracted
00:03:50
Speaker 1: in the middle of a game. And we'll pick up
00:03:52
Speaker 1: those ever present binoculars, yes, even in the middle of
00:03:55
Speaker 1: a basketball game, to zoom in on a sparrow's nest
00:03:59
Speaker 1: or a parting parakeet. So the lives lived behind the
00:04:04
Speaker 1: blue door at number forty two and the red door
00:04:07
Speaker 1: at number forty four are very different, indeed, but Brooke
00:04:12
Speaker 1: and Forest are the very best of friends, and today,
00:04:17
Speaker 1: right now, Forest is heading around to lift the great
00:04:22
Speaker 1: brass knocker that hangs on his best friend's red front
00:04:26
Speaker 1: door and invite her to head to the Sweet Shop
00:04:29
Speaker 1: with him. It's a cold sort of a day, one
00:04:33
Speaker 1: of those where it's a good idea to wear a
00:04:35
Speaker 1: hat and a scarf even if it isn't really winter yet,
00:04:40
Speaker 1: and the clouds are hanging low and heavy. Maybe they
00:04:45
Speaker 1: hold snow or maybe just more rain. This is a
00:04:50
Speaker 1: particularly special visit to the Sweet Shop, as they've invited
00:04:54
Speaker 1: you to come along with them. They want to be
00:04:58
Speaker 1: sure you'll be cozy and warm. So imagine now that
00:05:02
Speaker 1: you're pushing on the coziest bright red hat with the
00:05:06
Speaker 1: most bobbling bobble that has ever been seen, and you're
00:05:11
Speaker 1: winding a long, pale blue scarf around your neck once
00:05:17
Speaker 1: and twice and three times round. Take your coat from
00:05:23
Speaker 1: the peg in the hall, the one that has the
00:05:25
Speaker 1: deep pockets that you can bury your hands in, and
00:05:29
Speaker 1: slip your feet into those fur lined winter boots that
00:05:33
Speaker 1: keep your toes extra warm and snuggly. Walk with Forest
00:05:38
Speaker 1: up to the door and watch as he lifts that
00:05:42
Speaker 1: great brass knocker and lets it fall back with a
00:05:47
Speaker 1: dull thump that echoes throughout the house. If you listen carefully,
00:05:55
Speaker 1: you'll hear the rush of brook getting her things together.
00:05:59
Speaker 1: Here she is opening the door and rolling her way
00:06:03
Speaker 1: down the ramp onto the path that winds its way
00:06:06
Speaker 1: through the garden and out of the little lane. She
00:06:10
Speaker 1: has that blanket in place that you all made together
00:06:13
Speaker 1: last year, the one with the squares of old clothes
00:06:16
Speaker 1: that you'd all grown out of and that you'd carefully
00:06:19
Speaker 1: slowly stitched together, one by one, threading needles night after night,
00:06:25
Speaker 1: until finally the blanket was completed. The squares all tell
00:06:32
Speaker 1: stories that only you know, the moment when those clothes
00:06:37
Speaker 1: were worn and loved. What was your favorite jumper? Do
00:06:43
Speaker 1: you remember the last time you wore it? Imagine those
00:06:48
Speaker 1: moments kept forever in a blanket of woven memories wrapped
00:06:54
Speaker 1: around you, and pouring those perfect minutes and hours and
00:06:59
Speaker 1: days into your dreams. The three of you are heading
00:07:05
Speaker 1: down the road now. Forest keeps one hand loosely placed
00:07:10
Speaker 1: on the back of Brooks wheelchair, not because it needs
00:07:14
Speaker 1: to be there, but because it makes them both more
00:07:16
Speaker 1: sure of each other. As long as his hand is
00:07:20
Speaker 1: in place, he isn't looking through the binoculars and getting
00:07:24
Speaker 1: distracted by specks in the sky. As long as his
00:07:28
Speaker 1: hand is in place, forest won't get left behind. You
00:07:35
Speaker 1: walk past fields that have long been cut short, the
00:07:39
Speaker 1: harvests taken in, and the fields left for now vast
00:07:44
Speaker 1: expanses of nothingnes's dotted with small patches of brown and
00:07:49
Speaker 1: green where the weeds are creeping in. In the far
00:07:53
Speaker 1: corner of the field, there are a group of rabbits,
00:07:56
Speaker 1: their white tails dancing bright against the darkness of the earth.
00:08:01
Speaker 1: The wind whips its way across the field, rustling the
00:08:06
Speaker 1: final few leaves that hang on the branches of the
00:08:09
Speaker 1: trees and throwing up the piles that lie in gold
00:08:13
Speaker 1: and red and orange heaps on the ground below. A
00:08:18
Speaker 1: single leaf is caught by the wind and floats past you,
00:08:24
Speaker 1: swirling and twirling and dancing and diving as the gust
00:08:30
Speaker 1: ebbs and flows. There's a small bridge to walk across now,
00:08:37
Speaker 1: an old stone one that arches in the middle, as
00:08:40
Speaker 1: if stretching up, up and away from the coldness of
00:08:44
Speaker 1: the river that runs below. The water even looks cold today,
00:08:51
Speaker 1: gray and silver streaks spilling over rocks and pouring their
00:08:56
Speaker 1: way down towards the distant forest. In the summer, it's
00:09:01
Speaker 1: the perfect place to paddle, where you go and roll
00:09:04
Speaker 1: your jeans up and dabble your toes, and on the
00:09:08
Speaker 1: hottest days dare to dive into the cooling depths. Not today, though,
00:09:14
Speaker 1: where it's a day to snuggle even deeper into your
00:09:18
Speaker 1: coat and bury your hands in your pockets and push
00:09:22
Speaker 1: your head as far as it will go into your
00:09:25
Speaker 1: cozy hat. You've reached the edge of the village now,
00:09:32
Speaker 1: and the first place you pass is the post office.
00:09:37
Speaker 1: The windows are steamed up, damp from the warm breaths
00:09:42
Speaker 1: being drawn inside, but it's just possible to make out
00:09:47
Speaker 1: the line of people waiting to send parcels and letters
00:09:52
Speaker 1: and packages to all corners of the world. There's something
00:09:58
Speaker 1: a little bit magical about post offices and how they
00:10:02
Speaker 1: can take your words, your very own, specially written, carefully
00:10:08
Speaker 1: crafted words, and whisk them away to the person you've
00:10:12
Speaker 1: chosen to receive them. Forest has a penpow who lives
00:10:16
Speaker 1: in Malaysia, and they often send letters back and forth,
00:10:20
Speaker 1: each choosing the brightest and most brilliant envelopes and insisting
00:10:26
Speaker 1: that the ladies in their respective post offices sell them
00:10:29
Speaker 1: the brightest and most brilliant stamps too. Forest's friend often
00:10:36
Speaker 1: sends stamps with pictures of birds so wild and wonderful
00:10:40
Speaker 1: that it's hard to believe they're even real, with impossible
00:10:44
Speaker 1: blues and turquoises, and dashes of sunshine, yellow and fiery
00:10:50
Speaker 1: red feathers, dressing the birds in exquisite beauty. And now
00:10:57
Speaker 1: you walk past the bakery, where the windows are steamed
00:11:02
Speaker 1: up from the warmth of the bread and the cakes
00:11:04
Speaker 1: that steam gently on the glass shelves. The lady behind
00:11:09
Speaker 1: the counter dashes back and forth, spilling out smiles as
00:11:14
Speaker 1: she reaches for freshly baked loaves and delicate fairy cakes
00:11:19
Speaker 1: and muffins with tops that spill generously from the sides
00:11:22
Speaker 1: of the paper. Next it's the hardware stool, with almost
00:11:29
Speaker 1: half the shop seemingly outside on the pavement for all
00:11:32
Speaker 1: to see. The rakes and spades and gardening forks are
00:11:38
Speaker 1: leaned up against the wall, all shiny and clean and
00:11:43
Speaker 1: waiting to be taken into gardens and fields and covered
00:11:47
Speaker 1: in glorious layers of mud. And the wheelbarrows propped up
00:11:52
Speaker 1: and eager to be taken away and given a purpose
00:11:55
Speaker 1: in the world, helping haul hay to the horses, and
00:11:59
Speaker 1: pills are fallen apples to be made into apple pies
00:12:03
Speaker 1: and crumbles and biscuits and bakes, and finally, here it
00:12:13
Speaker 1: is the place you have all been waiting for. Brook
00:12:18
Speaker 1: heads first into the sweet scented candy land, and you
00:12:22
Speaker 1: and forest follow close behind. It's one of those old
00:12:27
Speaker 1: fashioned sweet shops where everything is placed in huge jars
00:12:32
Speaker 1: on shells that are so high they can only be
00:12:35
Speaker 1: reached by a ladder that rolls its way this and
00:12:39
Speaker 1: that as Miss Dewdrop guides it. She's a tiny old
00:12:44
Speaker 1: lady who looks out at the world over the top
00:12:47
Speaker 1: of her little round glasses, and whose clothes fall in
00:12:52
Speaker 1: flowing waves around her. She wears her hair in a
00:12:58
Speaker 1: gray bun atop her head and fills it with pens
00:13:01
Speaker 1: and pencils and all sorts of useful things that she
00:13:05
Speaker 1: has a tendency to lose if she doesn't keep them
00:13:07
Speaker 1: close by, so she often has the appearance of having
00:13:12
Speaker 1: an eccentric sort of nest on top of her head.
00:13:17
Speaker 1: Choosing the perfect combination of candies always takes a while,
00:13:23
Speaker 1: for there are hundreds of thousands to choose from, and
00:13:27
Speaker 1: indeed there are quite literally hundreds and thousands in there too.
00:13:32
Speaker 1: Should you wish to have a bag full of the
00:13:35
Speaker 1: tiniest colored sugar balls that stick to the end of
00:13:38
Speaker 1: a licked finger and smile softly on your tongue. There's
00:13:44
Speaker 1: a chocolate fountain on the counter, and for a moment
00:13:48
Speaker 1: you imagine gliding away on a chocolate river, floating in
00:13:53
Speaker 1: a boat forged from the finest chocolate, and the bobs
00:13:58
Speaker 1: across the little way the river swoops and swirls past
00:14:04
Speaker 1: the land made entirely of candy, with lollipops taking the
00:14:09
Speaker 1: place of flowers, and where sugar mice have come to
00:14:14
Speaker 1: life in a twinkling, twirling, whirling pale pink mats. Beneath
00:14:20
Speaker 1: the shade of a gumdrop tree. Alongside the chocolate fountain
00:14:27
Speaker 1: is a huge glass bowl overflowing with pink and white marshmallows.
00:14:34
Speaker 1: Imagine floating on a cloud of marshmallows, drifting through a
00:14:40
Speaker 1: pale blue sky on your billowing pillow of the fluffiest,
00:14:46
Speaker 1: softest bed made from sugar and air blended together in
00:14:53
Speaker 1: a magical way. Imagine feeling as if you weighed nothing
00:14:59
Speaker 1: at all and could float high above the world, with
00:15:04
Speaker 1: everything on it reduced to a size so small that
00:15:09
Speaker 1: nothing matters anymore. Imagine floating so high that you reach
00:15:16
Speaker 1: the stars, and that you can drift between them one
00:15:21
Speaker 1: by one, lying there on that softest of beds that
00:15:27
Speaker 1: bends and sways to your every whim. In the window
00:15:35
Speaker 1: of the shop is a huge white marble slab, and
00:15:38
Speaker 1: onto it, miss dewdrop paused from a tilted jug a
00:15:43
Speaker 1: river of unset fudge that rushes across the slab and
00:15:48
Speaker 1: waits for her to sweep it back and forth, smoothing
00:15:52
Speaker 1: it this way and that, expertly shaping and easing the
00:15:58
Speaker 1: waves of warm fudge so the coolness of the marble
00:16:03
Speaker 1: works its magic. This is something Brooke has watched for
00:16:09
Speaker 1: hour after hour, wondering at the way the shiny liquid
00:16:15
Speaker 1: fudge slowly cools and hardens before her eyes, before being
00:16:22
Speaker 1: whisked away as sticky squares in cardboard boxes, waiting to
00:16:28
Speaker 1: be taken to homes. Throughout the little village, you work
00:16:34
Speaker 1: your way along the top row of jars, looking at
00:16:38
Speaker 1: the fudges and toffees and jellies and candies. The chocolates
00:16:45
Speaker 1: and cakes and sherbs and fizzles. Looking down to the
00:16:51
Speaker 1: next row to see the glass jars filled with all
00:16:56
Speaker 1: the colors of the rainbow. Looking down to the robe
00:17:02
Speaker 1: below that, to imagine all the ways the sugar and
00:17:07
Speaker 1: sweetness can dance on your tongue. And there it is,
00:17:14
Speaker 1: the first second there, four fifth from the left, the
00:17:22
Speaker 1: jar filled to the brim with your favorite sweets in
00:17:28
Speaker 1: the world. That's the one, you tell, Miss Judo, pointing
00:17:35
Speaker 1: carefully so she knows exactly where to wheel her ladder
00:17:40
Speaker 1: and exactly how many rungs she must climb before she
00:17:44
Speaker 1: reaches to the jar and turns to see you smile
00:17:49
Speaker 1: and nod and show that yes, this is the jar.
00:17:54
Speaker 1: These are the ones you will have to day. And
00:17:59
Speaker 1: Miss Judo smiles in turn and carefully takes the jar down,
00:18:05
Speaker 1: balancing it against one hip as she eases her way
00:18:08
Speaker 1: down the ladder, one roung after the other, carrying it
00:18:13
Speaker 1: before her as if it is a trophy. As she
00:18:16
Speaker 1: heads to the scales at the far end of the counter,
00:18:21
Speaker 1: she picks the right weight and places it on the
00:18:24
Speaker 1: flat disk, scooping your sweets into the brass bowl until
00:18:30
Speaker 1: the scales balance perfectly, and your sweets seem to be
00:18:34
Speaker 1: floating in the air all by themselves. She takes the
00:18:40
Speaker 1: little brass bowl and pours your sweets into a paper bag,
00:18:45
Speaker 1: turning the top once and then again to make sure
00:18:50
Speaker 1: they are safely tucked inside. And because she is Miss Dewdrop,
00:18:56
Speaker 1: she takes an extra one of the sweets and hands
00:18:59
Speaker 1: it you now, because she knows how very hard it
00:19:03
Speaker 1: is to walk all the way home and not help
00:19:06
Speaker 1: yourself to any of your favorite sweets. She replaces the
00:19:13
Speaker 1: lid and once more carries the jar before her, a
00:19:18
Speaker 1: precious prize that must be returned to its rightful place
00:19:22
Speaker 1: on the shelf, and once more balances it against her
00:19:27
Speaker 1: hip and slowly climbs the wrungs of the ladder. Forrest
00:19:35
Speaker 1: has decided that today he will have the chocolate limes,
00:19:39
Speaker 1: and Miss Dewdrop repeats her performance, maneuvering the ladder to
00:19:44
Speaker 1: the middle of the shells and climbing up to reach
00:19:48
Speaker 1: the very top shelf and the first second third jar
00:19:54
Speaker 1: on the left, the chocolate limes carefully weighed and measured.
00:20:00
Speaker 1: When the jar returned, she turns to Brooke, who has
00:20:04
Speaker 1: chosen the jelly beans to day, not the ones that
00:20:08
Speaker 1: are on their own, not just the strawberry ones, or
00:20:12
Speaker 1: the blueberry ones, or the lemon ones, or the bubblegum ones,
00:20:16
Speaker 1: but the jar that contains the hundred different flavors of
00:20:20
Speaker 1: jelly bean, all bundled together, so each taste is a
00:20:26
Speaker 1: brand new surprise. You all hand over your coins and
00:20:33
Speaker 1: pay for your sweets, watching the money disappear into the
00:20:37
Speaker 1: cash register with a tinkle from the machine and a
00:20:41
Speaker 1: twinkle from Miss Dewdrop. She hands you each one of
00:20:47
Speaker 1: her favorites of the moment. For her favorite changes with
00:20:51
Speaker 1: her whims, and you open your hand to see the
00:20:55
Speaker 1: black and white stripes of a mint humbug promises of
00:20:59
Speaker 1: a sot freshness filling your mouth as you head slowly home.
00:21:07
Speaker 1: It rained a little while you were inside the sweet shop,
00:21:11
Speaker 1: and now there are puddles lining the edge of the lane,
00:21:15
Speaker 1: brooks chance to rush through and splash you and forest
00:21:19
Speaker 1: with the spray from her gleaming wheels. You walk back
00:21:25
Speaker 1: past the hardware store, where the tools are now shining
00:21:29
Speaker 1: with a dampness from the rain, and a small puddle
00:21:33
Speaker 1: in the base of a silver bucket throws back the
00:21:37
Speaker 1: watery sunlight to the world. The evening is starting to
00:21:42
Speaker 1: draw in and the light is beginning to fade. It's
00:21:47
Speaker 1: time to head home. Past the bakery with the steamed
00:21:52
Speaker 1: up windows, past the post office with its piles of
00:21:57
Speaker 1: packages waiting to be gathered up and whisked around the world,
00:22:02
Speaker 1: and towards the bridge, where the river runs even more
00:22:07
Speaker 1: merrily than it did before, now that more water is
00:22:11
Speaker 1: pouring into it from the hills and fields. Passing by
00:22:17
Speaker 1: the field, the rabbits are long gone, now safe in
00:22:21
Speaker 1: their burrows and far from the dampness and grayness of
00:22:25
Speaker 1: the world above. The last few birds are heading home,
00:22:32
Speaker 1: disappearing into holes in trees and heading into soft nests
00:22:38
Speaker 1: to hide away until the morning. A few ducks are
00:22:44
Speaker 1: nestled in the marshy area over there, quacking a good
00:22:49
Speaker 1: night to each other as the sun sinks lower and
00:22:53
Speaker 1: lower and everything becomes nothing more than a silhouette against
00:22:58
Speaker 1: the sky line. You reach Brooks home first, and both
00:23:05
Speaker 1: you and Forest head up to the red door of
00:23:09
Speaker 1: number forty four with her. Then it is Forest's home,
00:23:15
Speaker 1: and you walk up together to the blue door of
00:23:18
Speaker 1: number forty two, waving goodbye as you walk alone down
00:23:23
Speaker 1: the garden path and out onto the lane. It's just
00:23:30
Speaker 1: a few more steps. Now, only a few more steps,
00:23:35
Speaker 1: and you can be in your own home and close
00:23:38
Speaker 1: your front door behind you. Now it's your turn to
00:23:44
Speaker 1: step into the warmth and pull the hat from your head,
00:23:50
Speaker 1: and hang your coat from the peg in the hall,
00:23:53
Speaker 1: and slip your feet from your fur lined boots, unwind
00:23:59
Speaker 1: the scar once, twice, three times, and slowly, putting one
00:24:09
Speaker 1: foot carefully in front of the other, you climb the
00:24:13
Speaker 1: stairs and walk towards your bedroom, disappearing beneath the blankets
00:24:21
Speaker 1: and turning your head this way and that on the
00:24:25
Speaker 1: pillow until there he found it the perfect spot. The
00:24:36
Speaker 1: wind whistles outside, but you are safe and warm in
00:24:41
Speaker 1: your bed, and the rain that drums softly against the
00:24:46
Speaker 1: roof can do you no harm. This is where you
00:24:52
Speaker 1: are supposed to be, now, curled up with thoughts of
00:24:58
Speaker 1: marshmallow cloud drifting you slowly towards the stars and the moon.
00:25:08
Speaker 1: Imagine floating on candy flows lighter than air, your toes
00:25:17
Speaker 1: and feet and legs and body and arms and hands
00:25:25
Speaker 1: and neck and head feeling as if they weigh nothing
00:25:32
Speaker 1: at all. Close your eyes and imagine where you would drift.
00:25:40
Speaker 1: If you could drift anywhere in the world, all those
00:25:46
Speaker 1: beautiful places waiting for you, with their streams and meadows,
00:25:55
Speaker 1: misty days and whimsical ways. Imagine a soft, billowing warmth
00:26:05
Speaker 1: against your skin, drifting towards a land where pear drops
00:26:12
Speaker 1: hang heavy from the branches of trees, and paths are
00:26:19
Speaker 1: paved with sugar. Where Miss Dewdrop comes by with her
00:26:27
Speaker 1: thousand glass jars filled with all the sweets in the world,
00:26:35
Speaker 1: with her clothes billowing softly around her in waves of
00:26:42
Speaker 1: smooth as silk. Where you are everything you want to be,
00:26:49
Speaker 1: and everything you will be, floating through life on a
00:26:56
Speaker 1: candy floss cloud to the
