00:02:18

Speaker 1: I'll begin our story. In tonight's story, we're going to

00:02:22

Speaker 1: meet some trolls who live in a village between the mountains,

00:02:26

Speaker 1: always lit up by a big beaming rainbow. A little

00:02:30

Speaker 1: troll is curious one day, what do you find at

00:02:33

Speaker 1: the end of the rainbow. Let's join her and her

00:02:37

Speaker 1: brother on their adventure and find out. This is Miggie

00:02:42

Speaker 1: the Rainbow Troll by Luke Prendergast. Long long ago, when

00:02:54

Speaker 1: time was young and the world was inhabited by all

00:02:57

Speaker 1: kinds of fantastical creatures, the rains built their village at

00:03:01

Speaker 1: the foot of a snow tip mountain. They were called

00:03:05

Speaker 1: the rainbow trolls because of their bright, multi colored hair

00:03:09

Speaker 1: and because of the rainbow that hung in a huge

00:03:12

Speaker 1: arc above their mountain. Every spring, the mountain snow would

00:03:17

Speaker 1: melt and made the river run fast with water, and

00:03:21

Speaker 1: all the brilliant flowers would crop up from between the rocks.

00:03:26

Speaker 1: Then the trolls would pick the flowers and weave them

00:03:30

Speaker 1: through their hair forget me nots for the trolls with

00:03:34

Speaker 1: big tufts of blue hair, buttercups for those with yellow hair,

00:03:40

Speaker 1: and daisies for those whose hair grew straight up and

00:03:43

Speaker 1: bright white. The trolls made their houses out of rocks

00:03:48

Speaker 1: and wood, or else they burrowed into the side of

00:03:51

Speaker 1: the mountain to create cozy little caves. In one such

00:03:55

Speaker 1: cave lived a young troll called Miggy. She lived with

00:04:00

Speaker 1: her mother Troll, her father Troll, and her big brother Brucey.

00:04:04

Speaker 1: As far as Miggie was concerned, their cave was one

00:04:07

Speaker 1: of the cutest caves in town. They had a toasty

00:04:10

Speaker 1: log fire for the cold winter nights, dried grass laid

00:04:14

Speaker 1: out in thick piles as beds, and the walls were

00:04:18

Speaker 1: covered with beautiful war carvings. The carvings were her dad's doing.

00:04:24

Speaker 1: All day long. He could be found with his piece

00:04:26

Speaker 1: of flint etching elaborate scenes onto the walls of their

00:04:30

Speaker 1: cave or their neighbour's caves, or adding decoration to the

00:04:34

Speaker 1: stones all around the village. That's because carving was her

00:04:39

Speaker 1: dad's special talent. Every troll had a special talent, a

00:04:46

Speaker 1: skill or gift that could be put to use to

00:04:48

Speaker 1: bring benefits to the town. Her dad's was stone carving,

00:04:53

Speaker 1: but her mom's was healing. She knew more than any

00:04:58

Speaker 1: other troll about the secret medicinal properties of all the

00:05:03

Speaker 1: herbs and plants growing nearby, about which charm could help

00:05:08

Speaker 1: with a stomach ache, or which tree sat could help

00:05:12

Speaker 1: heal a bruised knee. Her brother Brucie was super strong,

00:05:17

Speaker 1: even for a troll. He might have been short, as

00:05:21

Speaker 1: trolls often were, but he had big, strong arms and legs,

00:05:26

Speaker 1: and he would carry boulders from one side of the

00:05:29

Speaker 1: village to the other, or lift up a fallen tree

00:05:33

Speaker 1: from the forest's edge. And Miggie, well, Miggie's talent was swimming.

00:05:40

Speaker 1: Sometimes she wondered if she wasn't partfish. When she dove

00:05:45

Speaker 1: from the river bank into the cool water, she felt

00:05:48

Speaker 1: like she was jumping right into her own element. Her

00:05:52

Speaker 1: hands felt like flippers, her feet like a tail, and

00:05:57

Speaker 1: she would whip and zip through the water, catching fish

00:06:01

Speaker 1: for dinner or searching the river bed for bright gems,

00:06:04

Speaker 1: sapphires and emeralds, and dark glinting onys. Sometimes Miggie would

00:06:11

Speaker 1: gather so many sparkling gemstones that she wouldn't be able

00:06:15

Speaker 1: to carry them back to the village, and her big

00:06:18

Speaker 1: brother Brucie would have to come and help her carry them.

00:06:23

Speaker 1: But before hauling the huge sack onto his back, he'd

00:06:27

Speaker 1: join her drying on the rocks in the warm sun,

00:06:30

Speaker 1: and they would look up at the mountain and the

00:06:33

Speaker 1: rainbow that hung over its peak and ended somewhere far

00:06:36

Speaker 1: off in the distance. Then they would play a silly game.

00:06:43

Speaker 1: What on Earth could be at the end of the rainbow?

00:06:48

Speaker 1: Brucie would ask, and Miggie would reply, a giant with

00:06:53

Speaker 1: a giant teapot waiting to make you some giant tea.

00:07:00

Speaker 1: Or a friendly dinosaur, Brucie would add, who'll introduce you

00:07:06

Speaker 1: to all her friends, Or a magical princess who'll waive

00:07:13

Speaker 1: her wonder and give you wings. Maggie and Brucie played

00:07:18

Speaker 1: this game as a joke, but the truth was that

00:07:21

Speaker 1: there was no conversation more popular among the rainbow trolls

00:07:26

Speaker 1: than what might be discovered at the end of the rainbow.

00:07:29

Speaker 1: There were many ancient myths on the subject, and every

00:07:34

Speaker 1: troll had an opinion. Their dad said that at the

00:07:38

Speaker 1: end of the rainbow you'd find piles of gold and silver,

00:07:42

Speaker 1: heaps of rubies and sapphires, more riches than you could

00:07:47

Speaker 1: ever imagine. But their mum would laugh or shake her head,

00:07:52

Speaker 1: or sometimes just sigh and say that was a load

00:07:56

Speaker 1: of old nonsense. At the end of the rainbow, she said,

00:08:01

Speaker 1: a marvelous tree grew up high into the sky, whose

00:08:05

Speaker 1: fruit could cure any illness or any injury with just

00:08:09

Speaker 1: one bite. Then she'd raise her eyebrows and give a

00:08:13

Speaker 1: firm nod as if to say that was that. Some

00:08:19

Speaker 1: trolls said that you'd find a silver unicorn who would

00:08:23

Speaker 1: grant you six wishes. Others said you'd find a sacred

00:08:27

Speaker 1: stone that would let you travel through time. Others still

00:08:32

Speaker 1: said that the rainbow went straight down through a hole

00:08:35

Speaker 1: in the ground, and if you jumped down through the hole,

00:08:38

Speaker 1: you'd find yourself in a topsy turvy world where trees

00:08:42

Speaker 1: grew from the sky and rain fell upwards, and rainbows

00:08:46

Speaker 1: weren't multi colored but striped in black and white, where

00:08:51

Speaker 1: the truth was no one really knew what was at

00:08:54

Speaker 1: the end of the rainbow because no one had ever

00:08:57

Speaker 1: been there. Why do you think no one has ever

00:09:02

Speaker 1: been to find out what's at the end of the rainbow?

00:09:06

Speaker 1: Maggie asked her brother Brucie on an afternoon down by

00:09:09

Speaker 1: the river. She had laid her big plume of bright

00:09:12

Speaker 1: purple hair against the rock to dry. I don't know,

00:09:18

Speaker 1: Brucie replied. Trolls have tried, I think, long long ago,

00:09:23

Speaker 1: but no one has ever found it. Miggie stared up

00:09:28

Speaker 1: at the bright blue sky and the rainbow like strokes

00:09:32

Speaker 1: of paint brushed straight on to it. Then quite suddenly

00:09:37

Speaker 1: she had an idea. She sat bolt upright Brucie. She said,

00:09:44

Speaker 1: we should go and find out what's actually at the

00:09:47

Speaker 1: end of the rainbow. Brucie stared at her a little gormously. Uh,

00:09:54

Speaker 1: he said, what do you mean? I mean? Miggie on

00:10:00

Speaker 1: getting more and more carried away with the idea that

00:10:02

Speaker 1: had landed in her head. We're always talking about what's

00:10:07

Speaker 1: at the end of the rainbow. Everyone in the village

00:10:11

Speaker 1: has a story. There are so many myths and legends

00:10:15

Speaker 1: and tall tales, but no one actually tries to find

00:10:19

Speaker 1: out anymore. Brucie was looking at her, and as his

00:10:25

Speaker 1: eyes grew a bit wider, she knew he understood what

00:10:29

Speaker 1: she was saying. Don't you think, Brucie, She said, you

00:10:35

Speaker 1: and me we can go and find out what's at

00:10:38

Speaker 1: the end of the rainbow and settle the question once

00:10:41

Speaker 1: and for all. When they got home and told their

00:10:45

Speaker 1: dad their plan, he broke into a big, sunny smile.

00:10:51

Speaker 1: What an excellent idea, he said. How brave you both are.

00:10:59

Speaker 1: So brave, said their mum. She had come and stood

00:11:02

Speaker 1: next to their father and put a hand on his shoulder.

00:11:06

Speaker 1: They both looked down at their children, their faces lit

00:11:10

Speaker 1: up by pride and joy. You'll be safe going together,

00:11:15

Speaker 1: their mum went on, you're both smart, and Brucie, you

00:11:19

Speaker 1: are very strong. I think it's an excellent idea too,

00:11:24

Speaker 1: a real adventure. Their mum packed up a knapsack laden

00:11:30

Speaker 1: with all kinds of sustenance for the journey, fruit and nuts,

00:11:35

Speaker 1: and some morsels of tasty fish wrapped up in a cloth.

00:11:39

Speaker 1: Miggie and Brucie packed their sunglasses in case it was sunny,

00:11:43

Speaker 1: an annaax in case it rained and poured on their

00:11:47

Speaker 1: walking boots and tied them up tight, And when they

00:11:51

Speaker 1: were all prepared to go, they stood by the cave

00:11:54

Speaker 1: door and gave both of their parents a big, squeezy hug.

00:12:00

Speaker 1: Good luck, said their mum. Be safe, said their dad.

00:12:06

Speaker 1: And then Maggie and Brucie, with their knapsacks on their backs,

00:12:10

Speaker 1: set off in the direction of the Rainbow's end. They

00:12:15

Speaker 1: walked through the village, past the ceremonial statues of the founders,

00:12:21

Speaker 1: past the caves and little huts of their fellow troll neighbors,

00:12:25

Speaker 1: and out onto the grasslands that unfolded beneath the mountain.

00:12:31

Speaker 1: They strode along the grass, often looking up to the

00:12:34

Speaker 1: sky to make sure they were walking in the right direction.

00:12:39

Speaker 1: At last, the grass grew thin and they reached the

00:12:43

Speaker 1: edge of a thick and dark forest. This was the

00:12:47

Speaker 1: furthest either of them had ever been from the Rainbow Village.

00:12:53

Speaker 1: Maggie gulped, then put on a brave face and smiled

00:12:57

Speaker 1: at her brother. She said. Brucey gritted his teeth and nodded,

00:13:06

Speaker 1: and together Miggie and Brucey stepped into the forest. He

00:13:14

Speaker 1: was nowhere near as scary as they'd imagined. In fact,

00:13:18

Speaker 1: it was rather beautiful in there, cool and shady, with

00:13:23

Speaker 1: thin shafts of sunlight coming through from their gaps in

00:13:26

Speaker 1: the leaves above. Twigs crunched under foot, and birds and

00:13:31

Speaker 1: insects flitted all over the forest floor. In fact, as

00:13:37

Speaker 1: they went along, Miggie and Brucie were having such fun

00:13:41

Speaker 1: that they picked up sticks and fought with them, running

00:13:44

Speaker 1: through the trees and hiding behind trunks to jump out

00:13:48

Speaker 1: and surprise each other. So puffed up were they by

00:13:53

Speaker 1: their sense of adventure that they didn't notice the forest

00:13:57

Speaker 1: getting denser and denser, until at last, looking up at

00:14:02

Speaker 1: the canopy, Miggie realized she couldn't see the sky. Oh no,

00:14:09

Speaker 1: she said, looking all around above her. I can't see

00:14:13

Speaker 1: the sky. That's okay, said Brucey. You're not walking on

00:14:20

Speaker 1: the sky. You've only got to see the ground. No,

00:14:25

Speaker 1: Brucie said Miggie, you don't understand. If we can't see

00:14:29

Speaker 1: the sky, we can't see the rainbow. So how are

00:14:33

Speaker 1: we going to know if we're going the right way? Oh,

00:14:39

Speaker 1: said Brucey, looking upwards. You're right. If we don't know

00:14:44

Speaker 1: where the rainbow's end is, we might get lost. Now

00:14:51

Speaker 1: they walked through the forest more carefully, no longer looking ahead,

00:14:55

Speaker 1: but looking up into the canopy to see if they

00:14:58

Speaker 1: could catch a glimpse of the rain But the trees

00:15:03

Speaker 1: were so thick that no more than the narrowest chink

00:15:06

Speaker 1: of blue light could be seen in any place. They

00:15:11

Speaker 1: came to a place where there was a wider gap,

00:15:13

Speaker 1: through which they could see a square of blue sky

00:15:17

Speaker 1: with a small puff of fluffy white cloud in one corner.

00:15:21

Speaker 1: But they couldn't see the rainbow at all. Oh, dear,

00:15:26

Speaker 1: sighed Brucie. Where could it be? Asked Miggie, more to

00:15:32

Speaker 1: herself than to anyone else. But much to her surprise,

00:15:36

Speaker 1: a tiny voice replied, what are you looking for? The

00:15:41

Speaker 1: two trolls started up. They looked about them for the voice,

00:15:45

Speaker 1: and saw a little bird in the tree. It had

00:15:49

Speaker 1: black feathers with a bright gold plume on the top

00:15:52

Speaker 1: of its head, like a crown. Hello, said Miggie tentatively,

00:15:59

Speaker 1: was you? Of course it was me, said the bird.

00:16:06

Speaker 1: Why is that a surprise, oh, said Miggie, still taking aback.

00:16:11

Speaker 1: I've just never heard a bird talk, well, said the bird.

00:16:17

Speaker 1: Have you ever cared to ask? Maggie thought about this

00:16:21

Speaker 1: for a few seconds, and realized the bird was right.

00:16:25

Speaker 1: She'd never asked a bird anything before, but now she

00:16:29

Speaker 1: took her chance. We're trying to see where the rainbow ends,

00:16:35

Speaker 1: she explained, but we can't see through the trees. Could

00:16:40

Speaker 1: you fly up there and have a look for us, please?

00:16:44

Speaker 1: The bird cocked his little head and told them that

00:16:48

Speaker 1: he certainly could, but that he would need something in return.

00:16:53

Speaker 1: He was hungry, and he couldn't find any nuts or

00:16:57

Speaker 1: seeds in the whole forest. If we have nuts, Maggie cried, merrily,

00:17:04

Speaker 1: fishing the parcel with their mom had packed for them

00:17:07

Speaker 1: out of their knapsack. Maggie shared a handful of nuts

00:17:11

Speaker 1: with the bird, who gulped them down happily. When he

00:17:17

Speaker 1: was finished eating, he gave a twitter of satisfaction and said,

00:17:22

Speaker 1: thank you trolls. Now, I'll go and see where that

00:17:26

Speaker 1: rainbow is you're looking for. The bird flew up, oh ah,

00:17:33

Speaker 1: and disappeared out into the blue square of sky. Miggie

00:17:39

Speaker 1: and Bruce waited, fidgety with anticipation until the bird reappeared

00:17:45

Speaker 1: and flew down to meet them. It's that way, he said.

00:17:51

Speaker 1: He pointed in a direction through the forest and explained

00:17:54

Speaker 1: that if they went straight that way, they would eventually

00:17:58

Speaker 1: come to the edge of the forest and a path

00:18:01

Speaker 1: which would take them through some craggy rocks until the

00:18:04

Speaker 1: end of the rainbow, at least as far as I

00:18:08

Speaker 1: can see, the bird said, ruffling his feathers. Maggie and

00:18:13

Speaker 1: Brucey thanked the bird and set off in the way

00:18:16

Speaker 1: it had told them. Soon enough, to their great delight,

00:18:21

Speaker 1: the trees began to thin out, and they found themselves

00:18:25

Speaker 1: at the other edge of the forest. In front of them,

00:18:29

Speaker 1: a winding path disappeared into a tumble of boulders and

00:18:33

Speaker 1: fissured rocks. Hooray, cried Maggie. Nice one, said Brucey, and

00:18:42

Speaker 1: off they went down the path. They were both excited now.

00:18:47

Speaker 1: The rainbow that went over their heads hung low in

00:18:50

Speaker 1: the sky, so that it almost felt that if they jumped,

00:18:54

Speaker 1: they'd be able to reach it. They both knew that

00:18:58

Speaker 1: this meant that they must be reaching near the rainbow's end.

00:19:02

Speaker 1: Soon enough, they'd find out what was at the end

00:19:05

Speaker 1: of it. But as they rounded a corner, they're fizzing

00:19:11

Speaker 1: bubbles of optimism, which had been bouncing merrily around their bodies,

00:19:15

Speaker 1: froze there in front of them, blocking the path. Was

00:19:21

Speaker 1: the most gigantic boulder they'd ever seen. It was so

00:19:25

Speaker 1: big that it had wedged itself between the rock faces,

00:19:29

Speaker 1: and there was no way to go around either side.

00:19:34

Speaker 1: Oh no, said Miggy, What on earth are we going

00:19:40

Speaker 1: to do? We need to get through this path in

00:19:44

Speaker 1: order to get to the rainbow's end. But BRUCEI had

00:19:49

Speaker 1: stepped up to the boulder and was giving it a

00:19:52

Speaker 1: look over. Never fear, Miggi, he said, I'm not strong

00:19:59

Speaker 1: for nothing. I can shift this boulder in no time.

00:20:04

Speaker 1: Just you wait and see. Miggie raised her bright purple eyebrows.

00:20:10

Speaker 1: She'd never seen her brother lift anything quite as big

00:20:13

Speaker 1: as this boulder, but she had absolute faith in his

00:20:17

Speaker 1: special talent, his exceptional strength, so she folded her arms

00:20:22

Speaker 1: and watched to see what he would do next. Brucie

00:20:27

Speaker 1: was inspecting the bottom of the boulder, working out exactly

00:20:32

Speaker 1: where it was jammed. Then he gave a brisk nod,

00:20:37

Speaker 1: turned to his sister and said, ready, Miggy, watch this.

00:20:43

Speaker 1: Brucey tucked his big hands beneath the boulder, crouched low,

00:20:48

Speaker 1: and took a deep breath in. Then, with a quick heave,

00:20:53

Speaker 1: he plucked the boulder up in his hands, just as

00:20:56

Speaker 1: if it had been as light as a feather. Ayah,

00:21:01

Speaker 1: he cried and pushed the boulder off the side of

00:21:04

Speaker 1: the path, where it landed out of the way in

00:21:07

Speaker 1: a big cloud of dust. Hurrah, Mickey cried. Prucey had

00:21:15

Speaker 1: done it. And then the two trolls, brother and sister,

00:21:21

Speaker 1: stood on the path, looking with astonished eyes at the

00:21:25

Speaker 1: sight before them. Wow, they both whispered at exactly the

00:21:32

Speaker 1: same time they had found it, the end of the rainbow.

00:21:38

Speaker 1: It curved down from the sky in all its multi

00:21:42

Speaker 1: colored glory, and where it touched the earth, a huge

00:21:47

Speaker 1: pool had formed. The water not blue like normal water,

00:21:52

Speaker 1: but a perfect swirl of all the colors of the rainbow.

00:21:58

Speaker 1: And what's more, the pool was filled with all kinds

00:22:02

Speaker 1: of amazing creatures, all splashing and paddling about. There were

00:22:07

Speaker 1: unicorns and flying lions, and little fairies, and a giant

00:22:13

Speaker 1: wearing bright pink swimming trunks who made the most ginormous

00:22:17

Speaker 1: splash of red and blue and green when he dove in.

00:22:22

Speaker 1: I can't believe it, Micky murmured, when she'd finally found

00:22:27

Speaker 1: her tongue at the end of the rainbow. It's a

00:22:34

Speaker 1: swimming pool. She clapped her hands against her mouth. It

00:22:40

Speaker 1: was as though the end of the rainbow had been

00:22:43

Speaker 1: made especially for her. Let's go, said Brucey, and so

00:22:51

Speaker 1: brother and sister ran up to the multi colored pool

00:22:54

Speaker 1: and jumped right in. It was just like water, but

00:22:59

Speaker 1: warm and technicolored. It was the best swim Miggie had

00:23:04

Speaker 1: ever had. She swam down deep underwater and shot up

00:23:10

Speaker 1: through the surface so that all the creatures around her

00:23:13

Speaker 1: clapped and cheered. While she was treading water, a dolphin

00:23:19

Speaker 1: appeared in front of her, wearing a rubber ring around

00:23:22

Speaker 1: his stomach. Nice swimming moves, the dolphin said, but did

00:23:28

Speaker 1: you know you can swim up the rainbow too, Up

00:23:33

Speaker 1: the rainbow, Miggy repeated, glancing up at the sky. Oh yeah,

00:23:39

Speaker 1: the dolphin said, look, follow me, and with a swish

00:23:45

Speaker 1: of his tail, the dolphin was off swimming towards the

00:23:49

Speaker 1: point where the rainbow touched the water, and then he

00:23:52

Speaker 1: was swimming upwards, propelling himself up through the rainbow as

00:23:58

Speaker 1: though it were a river in the sky. Miggie followed.

00:24:02

Speaker 1: She swam at the rainbow, and then, as if by magic,

00:24:07

Speaker 1: she was no longer swimming through the pool. But up

00:24:10

Speaker 1: into the air. Oee, she cried. Pretty cool, isn't it,

00:24:18

Speaker 1: the dolphin called over his shoulder. They swam and swam

00:24:24

Speaker 1: ever higher into the sky until they reached the rainbow's crest,

00:24:30

Speaker 1: and from there Meggie and the dolphin looked out over

00:24:34

Speaker 1: the whole wide world, the forest and the fields, the

00:24:39

Speaker 1: mountains and the valleys. It was the most marvelous sight

00:24:44

Speaker 1: in the world. There's my village, Miggy said, pointing down,

00:24:52

Speaker 1: and that's where I live, the dolphin said, pointing over

00:24:56

Speaker 1: at the sea. Meggie and Brucie stayed playing in the

00:25:02

Speaker 1: rainbow pool all afternoon, making friends with the dolphin and

00:25:07

Speaker 1: all of the other creatures there. But as the sun

00:25:11

Speaker 1: began to set, they realized they better head home, so

00:25:15

Speaker 1: they said goodbye to their new friends and set off

00:25:19

Speaker 1: back through the forest. What an amazing day, said Miggy.

00:25:28

Speaker 1: Who would have ever thought that at the end of

00:25:32

Speaker 1: the rainbow there'd be a big pool and that you'd

00:25:37

Speaker 1: be able to swim all the way out to the top.

00:25:43

Speaker 1: I never would have. Brucie agreed. Then he gave a

00:25:47

Speaker 1: big yawn. Wow, he said, all that walking and swimming

00:25:56

Speaker 1: has made me pretty tired. And move that giant boulder.

00:26:02

Speaker 1: Miggy added, that was pretty awesome. And then maybe because

00:26:08

Speaker 1: yawns are strange, infectious things, Miggy had a big yawn too,

00:26:14

Speaker 1: and stretched her arms out above her. Oh, I'm really

00:26:23

Speaker 1: tired as well, she said. When they broke out at

00:26:28

Speaker 1: the other end of the forest, it was twilight before them.

00:26:33

Speaker 1: They could see the fires of the Rainbow Village flickering

00:26:37

Speaker 1: in the mouths of the caves. Their mom and dad

00:26:41

Speaker 1: would be waiting for them, ready to hear what they

00:26:44

Speaker 1: had discovered at the end of the rainbow. I can't

00:26:48

Speaker 1: wait to tell them, Brucie said me. Neither said Miggy,

00:26:56

Speaker 1: and I can't wait to go back two. Rucie smiled.

00:27:04

Speaker 1: We should go swimming in a rainbow pool every week,

00:27:08

Speaker 1: he said. Miggie returned his smile. That was a very

00:27:14

Speaker 1: nice idea, indeed. And so the two tired trolls who

00:27:20

Speaker 1: had been on such a long adventure walked back through

00:27:24

Speaker 1: the Rainbow village and towards their family cave, where there

00:27:30

Speaker 1: was a hot meal waiting for them and soft beds

00:27:34

Speaker 1: of dried grass and two parents who were looking forward

00:27:40

Speaker 1: so much to hearing the tale of what exactly they'd

00:27:45

Speaker 1: found at the end of the rainbow, and white sid
