[00:04:00] Sweet dreams.
[00:04:00] For tonight's tale, selected from my bookshelf, we'll be reading Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and Friends.
[00:04:11] We'll follow Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny and Tom Kitten on their cheeky adventures around Mr. McGregor's fields.
[00:04:19] I actually recorded this story for The Sleepiest app a few years ago, so it might sound a little different, but I love it so much.
[00:04:27] I thought I'd share it with you all.
[00:04:29] I hope you enjoy.
[00:04:37] Once upon a time, there were four little rabbits.
[00:04:42] Their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter.
[00:04:49] They lived with their mother in a sandbank underneath the root of a very big fir tree.
[00:04:58] Now, my dears, said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden.
[00:05:11] Now, run along and don't get into mischief.
[00:05:16] I am going out.
[00:05:19] Then, old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella and went through the woods to the bakers.
[00:05:28] She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.
[00:05:36] Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries.
[00:05:45] But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden and squeezed under the gate.
[00:05:56] First, he ate some lettuces and some French beans.
[00:06:00] And then, he ate some radishes.
[00:06:03] And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.
[00:06:09] But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor?
[00:06:16] Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages.
[00:06:21] But he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out,
[00:06:27] Stop! Thief!
[00:06:30] Peter was most dreadfully frightened.
[00:06:33] He rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.
[00:06:39] He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
[00:06:46] After losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster,
[00:06:50] so that I think he might have got away altogether,
[00:06:54] if he had not, unfortunately, run into a gooseberry net and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket.
[00:07:01] It was a blue jacket, with brass buttons, quite new.
[00:07:07] Peter gave himself up for lost and shed big tears.
[00:07:12] But his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows,
[00:07:16] who flew to him in great excitement and implored him to exert himself.
[00:07:23] Mr. McGregor came up with a sieve, which he intended to pop upon the top of Peter.
[00:07:29] But Peter wriggled out just in time, leaving his jacket behind him,
[00:07:35] and rushed into the tool shed, and jumped into a can.
[00:07:41] It would have been a beautiful thing to hide him, if it had not had so much water in it.
[00:07:49] Mr. McGregor was quite sure that Peter was somewhere in the tool shed,
[00:07:53] perhaps hidden underneath a flower pot.
[00:07:57] He began to turn them over carefully, looking under each.
[00:08:04] Presently, Peter sneezed.
[00:08:07] Cut tissue!
[00:08:09] Mr. McGregor was after him in no time,
[00:08:13] and tried to put his foot upon Peter,
[00:08:16] who jumped out of a window, upsetting three plants.
[00:08:21] The window was too small for Mr. McGregor,
[00:08:24] and he was tired of running after Peter.
[00:08:27] He went back to his work.
[00:08:31] Peter sat down to rest.
[00:08:34] He was out of breath and trembling with fright,
[00:08:38] and he had not the least idea which way to go.
[00:08:42] Also, he was very damp with sitting in that can.
[00:08:47] After a time, he began to wander about,
[00:08:52] going lippity-lippity,
[00:08:54] not very fast,
[00:08:56] and looking all around.
[00:08:59] He found a door in a wall,
[00:09:03] but it was locked,
[00:09:05] and there was no room for a fat little rabbit to squeeze underneath.
[00:09:10] An old mouse was running in and out over the stone doorstep,
[00:09:16] carrying peas and beans to her family in the wood.
[00:09:20] Peter asked her the way to the gate,
[00:09:23] but she had such a large pea in her mouth
[00:09:26] that she could not answer.
[00:09:28] She only shook her head at him.
[00:09:32] Peter began to cry.
[00:09:35] Then, he tried to find his way straight across the garden,
[00:09:39] but he became more and more puzzled.
[00:09:44] Presently, he came to a pond
[00:09:46] where Mr. McGregor filled his watering cans.
[00:09:50] A white cat was staring at some goldfish.
[00:09:54] She sat very, very still.
[00:09:57] But now and then,
[00:09:59] the tip of her tail twitched as if it were alive.
[00:10:04] Peter thought it best to go away
[00:10:07] without speaking to her.
[00:10:10] He had heard about cats from his cousin,
[00:10:13] Little Benjamin Bunny.
[00:10:15] He went back towards the tool shed,
[00:10:19] but suddenly,
[00:10:20] quite close to him,
[00:10:22] he heard the noise of a hoe,
[00:10:25] scritch, scratch,
[00:10:28] scratch,
[00:10:30] scritch.
[00:10:32] Peter scuttered under the bushes,
[00:10:35] but presently,
[00:10:36] as nothing happened,
[00:10:38] he came out
[00:10:39] and climbed upon a wheelbarrow
[00:10:42] and peeped over.
[00:10:44] The first thing he saw
[00:10:46] was Mr. McGregor hoeing onions.
[00:10:50] His back was turned towards Peter,
[00:10:52] Peter,
[00:10:54] and beyond him
[00:10:54] was the gate.
[00:10:58] Peter got down very quietly
[00:11:00] off the wheelbarrow
[00:11:02] and started running
[00:11:04] as fast as he could go
[00:11:06] along a straight walk
[00:11:08] behind some blackcurrant bushes.
[00:11:12] Mr. McGregor caught sight of him
[00:11:15] at the corner,
[00:11:16] but Peter did not care.
[00:11:18] He slipped under the gate
[00:11:21] and was safe
[00:11:23] at last in the wood
[00:11:24] outside the garden.
[00:11:27] Mr. McGregor hung up
[00:11:29] the little jacket
[00:11:30] and the shoes
[00:11:31] for a scarecrow
[00:11:33] to frighten the blackbirds.
[00:11:36] Peter never stopped running
[00:11:38] or looked behind him
[00:11:40] till he got home
[00:11:42] to the big fir tree.
[00:11:45] He was so tired
[00:11:47] that he flopped down
[00:11:49] over the nice soft sand
[00:11:51] on the floor
[00:11:52] of the rabbit hole
[00:11:53] and shut his eyes.
[00:11:56] His mother was busy cooking.
[00:11:59] She wondered
[00:12:00] what he had done
[00:12:01] with his clothes.
[00:12:03] It was the second
[00:12:04] little jacket
[00:12:05] and pair of shoes
[00:12:06] that Peter had lost
[00:12:08] in a fortnight.
[00:12:10] I'm sorry to say
[00:12:12] that Peter was not very well
[00:12:14] during the evening.
[00:12:17] His mother put him to bed
[00:12:19] and made some chamomile tea
[00:12:21] and she gave a dose of it
[00:12:23] to Peter.
[00:12:25] One tablespoon
[00:12:26] to be taken at bedtime.
[00:12:30] But Flopsy, Mopsy
[00:12:32] and Cottontail
[00:12:33] had bread and milk
[00:12:35] and blackberries for supper.
[00:12:38] The next morning
[00:12:40] a little rabbit
[00:12:42] sat on a bank.
[00:12:43] He pricked his ears
[00:12:46] and listened
[00:12:47] to the
[00:12:48] trick-trot
[00:12:48] trick-trot
[00:12:49] of a pony.
[00:12:51] A gig
[00:12:52] was coming
[00:12:53] along the road.
[00:12:54] It was driven
[00:12:55] by Mr. McGregor
[00:12:56] and beside him
[00:12:58] sat Mrs. McGregor
[00:12:59] in her best bonnet.
[00:13:02] As soon as they had passed
[00:13:04] little Benjamin Bunny
[00:13:06] slid down
[00:13:07] into the road
[00:13:08] and set off
[00:13:10] with a hop,
[00:13:11] skip and a jump
[00:13:12] to call upon
[00:13:14] his relations
[00:13:14] who lived in the wood
[00:13:16] at the back
[00:13:17] of Mr. McGregor's garden.
[00:13:20] That wood
[00:13:21] was full
[00:13:22] of rabbit holes
[00:13:23] and in the neatest
[00:13:25] sandiest
[00:13:26] hole of all
[00:13:27] lived Benjamin's
[00:13:28] aunt
[00:13:29] and his cousins
[00:13:30] Flopsy,
[00:13:32] Mopsy,
[00:13:33] Cottontail
[00:13:34] and Peter.
[00:13:36] Old Mrs. Rabbit
[00:13:38] was a widow.
[00:13:40] She earned
[00:13:41] her living
[00:13:41] by knitting
[00:13:42] rabbit wool mittens
[00:13:44] and muffetes.
[00:13:45] I once bought
[00:13:46] a pair
[00:13:47] at a bazaar.
[00:13:49] She also
[00:13:49] sold herbs
[00:13:51] and rosemary tea
[00:13:52] and rabbit
[00:13:53] tobacco
[00:13:54] which is
[00:13:56] what we call
[00:13:57] lavender.
[00:14:00] Little Benjamin
[00:14:01] did not very much
[00:14:02] want to see
[00:14:03] his aunt.
[00:14:05] He came
[00:14:06] around the back
[00:14:07] of the fir tree
[00:14:08] and nearly
[00:14:09] tumbled
[00:14:10] upon the top
[00:14:11] of his cousin
[00:14:12] Peter.
[00:14:14] Peter
[00:14:15] was sitting
[00:14:15] by himself.
[00:14:17] He looked
[00:14:18] poorly
[00:14:18] and was dressed
[00:14:20] in a red
[00:14:21] cotton
[00:14:22] pocket
[00:14:23] handkerchief.
[00:14:25] Peter,
[00:14:26] said
[00:14:27] little Benjamin
[00:14:28] in a whisper,
[00:14:29] who has got
[00:14:30] your clothes?
[00:14:33] Peter replied,
[00:14:35] the scarecrow
[00:14:37] in Mr.
[00:14:38] McGregor's
[00:14:38] garden
[00:14:39] and described
[00:14:41] how he had
[00:14:42] been chased
[00:14:43] about the garden
[00:14:44] and had dropped
[00:14:45] his shoes
[00:14:46] and coat.
[00:14:48] Little Benjamin
[00:14:49] sat down
[00:14:50] beside his cousin
[00:14:51] and assured him
[00:14:53] that Mr.
[00:14:53] McGregor
[00:14:54] had gone
[00:14:55] out in a gig
[00:14:56] and Mrs.
[00:14:57] McGregor
[00:14:58] also
[00:14:58] said he
[00:15:07] hoped
[00:15:07] that it
[00:15:08] would rain.
[00:15:09] At this
[00:15:10] point,
[00:15:10] old Mrs.
[00:15:12] Rabbit's
[00:15:12] voice
[00:15:13] was heard
[00:15:14] inside the
[00:15:15] rabbit hole
[00:15:16] calling,
[00:15:17] Cottontail,
[00:15:18] Cottontail,
[00:15:20] fetch
[00:15:20] some more
[00:15:21] chamomile.
[00:15:22] Peter,
[00:15:23] said he
[00:15:23] thought
[00:15:24] he might
[00:15:25] feel better
[00:15:26] if he went
[00:15:27] for a walk.
[00:15:30] They went
[00:15:31] away
[00:15:31] hand in
[00:15:32] hand
[00:15:32] and got
[00:15:34] upon the
[00:15:34] flat top
[00:15:35] of the
[00:15:36] wall
[00:15:36] at the
[00:15:37] bottom
[00:15:37] of the
[00:15:38] wood.
[00:15:39] From here
[00:15:40] they looked
[00:15:40] down
[00:15:41] into Mr.
[00:15:42] McGregor's
[00:15:42] garden.
[00:15:43] Peter's
[00:15:44] coat
[00:15:44] and shoes
[00:15:45] were plainly
[00:15:46] to be seen
[00:15:47] upon the
[00:15:47] scarecrow,
[00:15:49] topped
[00:15:49] with an
[00:15:50] old
[00:15:50] tam-o-shanter
[00:15:51] of Mr.
[00:15:52] McGregor's.
[00:15:54] Little
[00:15:54] Benjamin
[00:15:55] said,
[00:15:56] It spoils
[00:15:58] people's
[00:15:58] clothes
[00:15:59] to squeeze
[00:15:59] under a
[00:16:00] gate.
[00:16:01] The proper
[00:16:02] way to get
[00:16:03] in is to
[00:16:04] climb down
[00:16:05] a pear
[00:16:05] tree.
[00:16:07] Peter fell
[00:16:09] down head
[00:16:09] first,
[00:16:10] but it
[00:16:11] was of
[00:16:11] no consequence
[00:16:12] as the
[00:16:13] bed below
[00:16:14] was newly
[00:16:14] raked
[00:16:15] and quite
[00:16:16] soft.
[00:16:17] It had
[00:16:17] been sown
[00:16:18] with lettuces.
[00:16:19] They left
[00:16:21] a great
[00:16:21] many odd
[00:16:22] little
[00:16:22] footmarks
[00:16:23] all over
[00:16:24] the bed,
[00:16:25] especially
[00:16:26] little
[00:16:26] Benjamin
[00:16:27] who was
[00:16:28] wearing
[00:16:28] clogs.
[00:16:30] Little
[00:16:31] Benjamin
[00:16:31] said
[00:16:32] that the
[00:16:32] first thing
[00:16:33] to be
[00:16:34] done
[00:16:34] was to
[00:16:35] get back
[00:16:36] Peter's
[00:16:37] clothes
[00:16:37] in order
[00:16:39] that they
[00:16:39] might be
[00:16:40] able to
[00:16:40] use the
[00:16:41] pocket
[00:16:41] handkerchief.
[00:16:44] They took
[00:16:45] them off
[00:16:45] the
[00:16:45] scarecrow.
[00:16:47] There had
[00:16:48] been rain
[00:16:48] during the
[00:16:49] night.
[00:16:50] There was
[00:16:51] water in
[00:16:52] the shoes
[00:16:52] and the
[00:16:53] coat was
[00:16:54] somewhat
[00:16:55] shrunk.
[00:16:57] Peter tried
[00:16:58] on the
[00:16:59] tamashanta,
[00:17:00] but it
[00:17:01] was too
[00:17:01] big for
[00:17:02] him.
[00:17:03] Then he
[00:17:04] suggested
[00:17:05] that they
[00:17:06] should fill
[00:17:07] the pocket
[00:17:07] handkerchief
[00:17:08] with onions
[00:17:09] as a little
[00:17:11] present for
[00:17:11] his aunt.
[00:17:14] Peter did
[00:17:15] not seem
[00:17:16] to be enjoying
[00:17:17] himself.
[00:17:18] He kept
[00:17:19] hearing noises
[00:17:20] Benjamin,
[00:17:22] on the
[00:17:22] contrary,
[00:17:23] was perfectly
[00:17:25] at home
[00:17:26] and ate
[00:17:27] a lettuce
[00:17:28] leaf.
[00:17:29] He said
[00:17:30] that he
[00:17:31] was in
[00:17:32] the habit
[00:17:32] of coming
[00:17:33] to the
[00:17:33] garden with
[00:17:34] his father
[00:17:35] to get
[00:17:36] lettuces
[00:17:36] for their
[00:17:37] Sunday dinner.
[00:17:40] The name
[00:17:41] of little
[00:17:42] Benjamin's
[00:17:43] papa was
[00:17:44] old Mr.
[00:17:45] Benjamin
[00:17:46] Bunny.
[00:17:46] the
[00:17:48] lettuces
[00:17:49] certainly
[00:17:50] were
[00:17:51] very
[00:17:51] fine.
[00:17:54] Peter
[00:17:55] did not
[00:17:55] eat
[00:17:56] anything.
[00:17:57] He said
[00:17:59] he should
[00:17:59] like to
[00:18:00] go home.
[00:18:02] Presently
[00:18:03] he dropped
[00:18:04] half the
[00:18:05] onions.
[00:18:07] Little
[00:18:08] Benjamin
[00:18:08] said
[00:18:09] that it
[00:18:10] was not
[00:18:10] possible
[00:18:11] to get
[00:18:12] back up
[00:18:13] the pear
[00:18:13] tree
[00:18:13] with a load
[00:18:15] of vegetables.
[00:18:17] He led
[00:18:18] the way
[00:18:18] boldly
[00:18:19] towards the
[00:18:20] other end
[00:18:21] of the
[00:18:21] garden.
[00:18:23] They went
[00:18:23] along a
[00:18:24] little walk
[00:18:25] on planks
[00:18:26] under a
[00:18:27] sunny
[00:18:28] red
[00:18:29] brick wall.
[00:18:30] The mice
[00:18:31] sat on
[00:18:32] their
[00:18:32] doorsteps
[00:18:33] cracking
[00:18:34] cherry
[00:18:35] stones.
[00:18:36] They
[00:18:37] winked
[00:18:37] at Peter
[00:18:38] Rabbit
[00:18:38] and
[00:18:39] little
[00:18:40] Benjamin
[00:18:40] Bunny.
[00:18:41] Presently
[00:18:42] Peter
[00:18:44] let the
[00:18:45] pocket
[00:18:45] handkerchief
[00:18:46] go again.
[00:18:48] They
[00:18:48] got amongst
[00:18:49] flowerpots
[00:18:50] and frames
[00:18:51] and
[00:18:52] tubs.
[00:18:54] Peter
[00:18:54] heard
[00:18:55] noises
[00:18:55] worse
[00:18:56] than
[00:18:56] ever.
[00:18:57] His
[00:18:58] eyes
[00:18:58] were as
[00:18:59] big
[00:19:00] as
[00:19:00] lollipops.
[00:19:02] He
[00:19:03] was a
[00:19:03] step
[00:19:04] or two
[00:19:04] in front
[00:19:05] of his
[00:19:05] cousin
[00:19:06] when he
[00:19:07] suddenly
[00:19:07] stopped.
[00:19:10] This
[00:19:11] is what
[00:19:12] those
[00:19:12] little
[00:19:12] rabbits
[00:19:13] saw
[00:19:13] around
[00:19:14] the
[00:19:14] corner.
[00:19:18] Little
[00:19:18] Benjamin
[00:19:19] took
[00:19:19] one
[00:19:20] look
[00:19:20] and
[00:19:21] then
[00:19:21] in
[00:19:22] half
[00:19:23] a
[00:19:23] minute
[00:19:24] less
[00:19:25] than
[00:19:25] no
[00:19:25] time
[00:19:26] he
[00:19:28] hid
[00:19:28] himself
[00:19:28] and
[00:19:29] Peter
[00:19:30] and
[00:19:31] the
[00:19:31] onions
[00:19:31] underneath
[00:19:32] a
[00:19:33] large
[00:19:34] basket.
[00:19:36] The
[00:19:37] cat
[00:19:37] got up
[00:19:38] and
[00:19:40] stretched
[00:19:40] herself
[00:19:41] and
[00:19:42] came
[00:19:43] and
[00:19:43] sniffed
[00:19:44] at
[00:19:44] the
[00:19:45] basket.
[00:19:47] Perhaps
[00:19:48] she
[00:19:48] liked
[00:19:48] the
[00:19:49] smell
[00:19:49] of
[00:19:50] onions.
[00:19:53] Anyway,
[00:19:54] she
[00:19:54] sat
[00:19:55] down
[00:19:55] upon
[00:19:55] the
[00:19:56] top
[00:19:56] of
[00:19:56] the
[00:19:57] basket.
[00:19:58] She
[00:19:59] sat
[00:19:59] there
[00:20:00] for
[00:20:01] five
[00:20:02] hours
[00:20:03] underneath
[00:20:06] the
[00:20:07] basket
[00:20:07] and
[00:20:08] was
[00:20:08] quite
[00:20:08] dark
[00:20:09] and
[00:20:10] because
[00:20:10] the
[00:20:10] smell
[00:20:11] of
[00:20:11] onions
[00:20:11] was
[00:20:12] fearful
[00:20:13] it
[00:20:13] made
[00:20:14] Peter
[00:20:14] Rabbit
[00:20:14] and
[00:20:15] little
[00:20:16] Benjamin
[00:20:16] cry.
[00:20:18] The
[00:20:18] sun
[00:20:18] got
[00:20:19] round
[00:20:19] behind
[00:20:20] the
[00:20:20] wood
[00:20:20] and
[00:20:21] it
[00:20:21] was
[00:20:21] quite
[00:20:22] late
[00:20:22] in
[00:20:22] the
[00:20:23] afternoon
[00:20:23] but
[00:20:25] still
[00:20:25] the
[00:20:26] cat
[00:20:26] sat
[00:20:27] upon
[00:20:28] the
[00:20:28] basket.
[00:20:30] At
[00:20:31] length
[00:20:31] there
[00:20:32] was a
[00:20:32] pitter-patter
[00:20:33] pitter-patter
[00:20:34] and
[00:20:35] some
[00:20:35] bits
[00:20:36] of
[00:20:36] mortar
[00:20:36] fell
[00:20:37] from
[00:20:37] the
[00:20:37] wall
[00:20:38] above.
[00:20:39] The
[00:20:40] cat
[00:20:40] looked
[00:20:41] up
[00:20:42] and
[00:20:43] saw
[00:20:43] old
[00:20:44] Mr.
[00:20:44] Benjamin
[00:20:45] Bunny
[00:20:45] prancing
[00:20:46] along
[00:20:47] the
[00:20:47] top
[00:20:48] of
[00:20:48] the
[00:20:48] wall
[00:20:48] of
[00:20:49] the
[00:20:49] upper
[00:20:49] terrace.
[00:20:51] He
[00:20:52] was
[00:20:52] smoking
[00:20:53] a
[00:20:53] pipe
[00:20:54] of
[00:20:54] rabbit
[00:20:55] tobacco
[00:20:55] and
[00:20:56] had
[00:20:57] a
[00:20:57] little
[00:20:57] switch
[00:20:58] in
[00:20:58] his
[00:20:58] hand.
[00:20:59] he
[00:21:00] was
[00:21:01] looking
[00:21:01] for
[00:21:02] his
[00:21:02] son.
[00:21:04] Old
[00:21:05] Mr.
[00:21:06] Bunny
[00:21:06] had
[00:21:07] no
[00:21:07] opinion
[00:21:08] whatever
[00:21:09] of
[00:21:10] cats.
[00:21:12] He
[00:21:12] took
[00:21:13] a
[00:21:13] tremendous
[00:21:14] jump
[00:21:14] off
[00:21:15] the
[00:21:15] top
[00:21:15] of
[00:21:15] the
[00:21:16] wall
[00:21:16] onto
[00:21:17] the
[00:21:17] top
[00:21:18] of
[00:21:18] the
[00:21:18] cat
[00:21:19] and
[00:21:20] cuffed
[00:21:20] it
[00:21:20] off
[00:21:21] the
[00:21:21] basket
[00:21:21] and
[00:21:22] kicked
[00:21:23] it
[00:21:23] into
[00:21:24] the
[00:21:24] greenhouse
[00:21:24] scratching
[00:21:26] off
[00:21:26] a handful
[00:21:27] of
[00:21:27] fur.
[00:21:29] The
[00:21:29] cat
[00:21:30] was
[00:21:31] too
[00:21:31] much
[00:21:31] surprised
[00:21:32] to
[00:21:32] scratch
[00:21:33] back.
[00:21:35] When
[00:21:36] old
[00:21:36] Mr.
[00:21:37] Bunny
[00:21:37] had
[00:21:37] driven
[00:21:38] the
[00:21:38] cat
[00:21:39] into
[00:21:39] the
[00:21:39] greenhouse
[00:21:40] he
[00:21:41] locked
[00:21:41] the
[00:21:42] door
[00:21:42] then
[00:21:43] he
[00:21:44] came
[00:21:44] back
[00:21:45] to
[00:21:45] the
[00:21:45] basket
[00:21:45] and
[00:21:47] took
[00:21:47] out
[00:21:47] his
[00:21:47] son
[00:21:48] Benjamin
[00:21:48] by
[00:21:49] the
[00:21:49] ears
[00:21:49] and
[00:21:50] whipped
[00:21:51] him
[00:21:51] with
[00:21:51] a
[00:21:51] little
[00:21:52] switch
[00:21:53] then
[00:21:54] he
[00:21:55] took
[00:21:55] out
[00:21:55] his
[00:21:56] nephew
[00:21:56] Peter
[00:21:58] then
[00:21:59] he
[00:21:59] took
[00:22:00] out
[00:22:00] the
[00:22:00] handkerchief
[00:22:01] of
[00:22:01] onions
[00:22:02] and
[00:22:03] marched
[00:22:03] out
[00:22:04] of
[00:22:04] the
[00:22:04] garden
[00:22:05] when
[00:22:08] Mr.
[00:22:08] McGregor
[00:22:09] returned
[00:22:09] about
[00:22:10] half
[00:22:10] an
[00:22:11] hour
[00:22:11] later
[00:22:11] he
[00:22:12] observed
[00:22:13] several
[00:22:14] things
[00:22:14] which
[00:22:15] perplexed
[00:22:16] him
[00:22:17] it
[00:22:18] looked
[00:22:18] as though
[00:22:19] some
[00:22:19] person
[00:22:20] had been
[00:22:20] walking
[00:22:21] all over
[00:22:22] the
[00:22:22] garden
[00:22:22] in a
[00:22:23] pair
[00:22:24] of
[00:22:24] clogs
[00:22:24] only
[00:22:26] the
[00:22:26] footmarks
[00:22:27] were
[00:22:27] too
[00:22:27] ridiculously
[00:22:28] little
[00:22:31] also
[00:22:31] he
[00:22:32] could
[00:22:32] not
[00:22:33] understand
[00:22:33] how
[00:22:34] the
[00:22:35] cat
[00:22:35] could
[00:22:36] have
[00:22:36] managed
[00:22:37] to
[00:22:37] shut
[00:22:37] herself
[00:22:38] up
[00:22:38] inside
[00:22:39] the
[00:22:40] greenhouse
[00:22:40] locking
[00:22:42] the
[00:22:42] door
[00:22:42] upon
[00:22:44] the
[00:22:44] outside
[00:22:46] when
[00:22:47] Peter
[00:22:47] got
[00:22:48] home
[00:22:48] his
[00:22:49] mother
[00:22:49] forgave
[00:22:49] him
[00:22:50] because
[00:22:50] she
[00:22:51] was
[00:22:51] so
[00:22:51] glad
[00:22:52] to
[00:22:52] see
[00:22:52] that
[00:22:53] he
[00:22:53] had
[00:22:53] found
[00:22:54] his
[00:22:54] shoes
[00:22:54] and
[00:22:55] coat
[00:22:57] Cottontail
[00:22:57] and
[00:22:58] Peter
[00:22:58] folded
[00:22:59] up
[00:22:59] the
[00:23:00] pocket
[00:23:00] handkerchief
[00:23:01] an
[00:23:02] old
[00:23:02] Mrs.
[00:23:03] Rabbit
[00:23:03] strung
[00:23:04] up
[00:23:04] the
[00:23:04] onions
[00:23:05] and
[00:23:06] hung
[00:23:06] them
[00:23:06] from
[00:23:07] the
[00:23:07] kitchen
[00:23:07] ceiling
[00:23:08] with
[00:23:09] the
[00:23:09] bunches
[00:23:10] of
[00:23:10] herbs
[00:23:10] and
[00:23:11] the
[00:23:11] rabbit
[00:23:11] tobacco
[00:23:15] once
[00:23:16] upon
[00:23:16] a
[00:23:17] time
[00:23:17] there
[00:23:18] were
[00:23:18] three
[00:23:18] little
[00:23:18] kittens
[00:23:19] and
[00:23:20] their
[00:23:20] names
[00:23:20] were
[00:23:21] Mittens
[00:23:22] Tom
[00:23:23] Kitten
[00:23:23] and
[00:23:25] Moppet
[00:23:25] they
[00:23:27] had
[00:23:30] and
[00:23:31] they
[00:23:31] tumbled
[00:23:32] about
[00:23:32] the
[00:23:32] doorstep
[00:23:33] and
[00:23:33] played
[00:23:34] in
[00:23:34] the
[00:23:34] dust
[00:23:36] but
[00:23:37] one
[00:23:38] day
[00:23:38] their
[00:23:39] mother
[00:23:39] Mrs.
[00:23:41] Tabitha
[00:23:41] Twitchchit
[00:23:42] expected
[00:23:43] friends
[00:23:44] to
[00:23:45] tea
[00:23:45] so
[00:23:46] she
[00:23:46] fetched
[00:23:47] the
[00:23:47] kittens
[00:23:47] indoors
[00:23:48] to
[00:23:49] wash
[00:23:50] and
[00:23:50] dress
[00:23:51] them
[00:23:51] before
[00:23:52] the
[00:23:52] fine
[00:23:52] company
[00:23:53] arrived
[00:23:54] first
[00:23:56] she
[00:23:56] scrubbed
[00:23:57] their
[00:23:57] faces
[00:23:58] then
[00:23:59] she
[00:24:00] brushed
[00:24:01] their
[00:24:01] fur
[00:24:01] then
[00:24:03] she
[00:24:04] combed
[00:24:05] their
[00:24:05] tails
[00:24:06] and
[00:24:06] whiskers
[00:24:08] Tom
[00:24:09] was
[00:24:09] very
[00:24:10] naughty
[00:24:10] and
[00:24:11] he
[00:24:11] scratched
[00:24:12] Mrs.
[00:24:15] Tabitha
[00:24:15] dressed

[00:24:20] and
[00:24:21] then
[00:24:22] she
[00:24:22] took
[00:24:23] all
[00:24:23] sorts
[00:24:24] of
[00:24:24] elegant
[00:24:25] uncomfortable

[00:24:26] out of
[00:24:27] the
[00:24:27] chest
[00:24:27] of
[00:24:28] drawers
[00:24:28] in
[00:24:29] order
[00:24:29] to
[00:24:29] dress
[00:24:30] up
[00:24:30] her
[00:24:30] son
[00:24:31] Thomas

[00:24:37] he
[00:24:37] had
[00:24:37] grown
[00:24:38] several
[00:24:39] buttons
[00:24:40] burst
[00:24:41] off
[00:24:41] his
[00:24:42] mother
[00:24:43] sewed
[00:24:44] them
[00:24:44] on
[00:24:44] again
[00:24:46] when
[00:24:47] the
[00:24:47] three
[00:24:48] kittens
[00:24:48] were
[00:24:48] ready
[00:24:49] Mrs.
[00:24:50] Tabitha
[00:24:51] unwisely
[00:24:52] turned them
[00:24:53] out
[00:24:53] into
[00:24:53] the
[00:24:53] garden
[00:24:54] to be
[00:24:55] out
[00:24:55] of
[00:24:55] the

[00:24:56] while
[00:24:56] she
[00:24:56] made
[00:24:57] hot
[00:24:57] buttered
[00:24:58] toast
[00:24:58] now
[00:24:59] keep

[00:25:01] clean
[00:25:01] children
[00:25:02] you
[00:25:03] must

[00:25:19] down
[00:25:20] the
[00:25:20] garden
[00:25:20] path
[00:25:21] unsteadily
[00:25:22] presently
[00:25:24] they
[00:25:25] trod
[00:25:25] upon
[00:25:26] their
[00:25:26] pinafores
[00:25:27] and fell
[00:25:28] on their
[00:25:28] noses
[00:25:29] when
[00:25:30] they
[00:25:30] stood
[00:25:31] up
[00:25:31] there
[00:25:32] were
[00:25:32] several
[00:25:33] green
[00:25:33] smears
[00:25:35] let
[00:25:36] us
[00:25:36] climb
[00:25:37] up
[00:25:37] the
[00:25:37] rockery
[00:25:38] and

[00:25:45] to
[00:25:45] front
[00:25:46] and
[00:25:47] went
[00:25:47] up
[00:25:47] with
[00:25:48] a
[00:25:48] skip
[00:25:48] and
[00:25:48] a

[00:25:50] moppet
[00:25:51] white
[00:25:51] tucker
[00:25:52] fell
[00:25:52] down
[00:25:53] into
[00:25:53] the
[00:25:53] road
[00:25:55] tom
[00:25:56] kitten
[00:25:56] was
[00:25:57] quite
[00:25:57] unable
[00:25:58] to
[00:25:58] jump
[00:25:59] when
[00:26:00] walking
[00:26:00] upon
[00:26:01] his
[00:26:01] hind
[00:26:01] legs
[00:26:02] in
[00:26:02] trousers
[00:26:03] he
[00:26:03] came
[00:26:03] up
[00:26:04] the
[00:26:04] rockery
[00:26:04] by
[00:26:05] degrees
[00:26:05] breaking
[00:26:06] the
[00:26:07] ferns
[00:26:07] and
[00:26:08] shedding
[00:26:08] buttons
[00:26:09] right
[00:26:09] and
[00:26:10] left
[00:26:11] he
[00:26:12] was
[00:26:12] all
[00:26:12] in
[00:26:13] pieces
[00:26:13] when
[00:26:14] he
[00:26:14] reached
[00:26:14] the
[00:26:14] top
[00:26:15] of
[00:26:15] the
[00:26:15] wall
[00:26:16] moppet
[00:26:17] and
[00:26:17] mittens
[00:26:18] tried
[00:26:19] to
[00:26:19] pull
[00:26:19] him
[00:26:19] together
[00:26:20] his
[00:26:21] hat
[00:26:21] fell
[00:26:22] off
[00:26:22] and
[00:26:23] the
[00:26:23] rest
[00:26:23] of
[00:26:23] his
[00:26:24] buttons
[00:26:24] burst
[00:26:26] while
[00:26:27] they
[00:26:27] were
[00:26:28] in
[00:26:28] difficulties
[00:26:29] there
[00:26:30] was
[00:26:30] a
[00:26:30] pit
[00:26:30] pat
[00:26:31] paddle
[00:26:31] pat
[00:26:32] and
[00:26:32] the
[00:26:32] three
[00:26:33] puddle
[00:26:33] ducks
[00:26:34] came
[00:26:34] along
[00:26:34] the
[00:26:35] hard
[00:26:35] high
[00:26:35] road
[00:26:37] marching
[00:26:37] one
[00:26:38] behind
[00:26:39] the
[00:26:39] other
[00:26:39] and
[00:26:41] doing
[00:26:41] the
[00:26:41] goose
[00:26:41] step
[00:26:42] pit
[00:26:43] pat
[00:26:43] paddle
[00:26:44] pat
[00:26:44] pit
[00:26:45] pat
[00:26:46] waddle
[00:26:47] pat
[00:26:48] they
[00:26:49] stopped
[00:26:50] and stood
[00:26:51] in a row
[00:26:52] and stared
[00:26:54] up at the
[00:26:55] kittens
[00:26:55] they had
[00:26:57] very small
[00:26:58] eyes
[00:26:58] and looked
[00:26:59] surprised
[00:27:00] then
[00:27:01] the two
[00:27:02] duck
[00:27:02] birds
[00:27:03] Rebecca
[00:27:04] and Jemima
[00:27:06] puddleduck
[00:27:06] picked up
[00:27:08] the hat
[00:27:08] and tucker
[00:27:09] and put
[00:27:10] them
[00:27:10] on
[00:27:12] mittens
[00:27:13] laughed
[00:27:13] so that
[00:27:14] she fell
[00:27:14] off the
[00:27:15] wall
[00:27:16] moppet
[00:27:17] and tom
[00:27:18] descended
[00:27:19] after
[00:27:19] her
[00:27:19] the
[00:27:21] pinafores
[00:27:22] and all
[00:27:22] the rest
[00:27:23] of tom's
[00:27:23] clothes
[00:27:24] came off
[00:27:25] on the
[00:27:26] way down
[00:27:27] come
[00:27:28] mr
[00:27:29] drake

[00:27:30] duck
[00:27:30] said
[00:27:31] moppet
[00:27:32] come
[00:27:33] and help
[00:27:33] us to
[00:27:34] dress
[00:27:34] him
[00:27:35] come
[00:27:36] and
[00:27:36] button
[00:27:36] up
[00:27:37] tom
[00:27:37] mr
[00:27:39] drake
[00:27:40] puddleduck
[00:27:41] advanced
[00:27:41] in a
[00:27:42] slow
[00:27:42] sideways
[00:27:44] manner
[00:27:44] and picked
[00:27:46] up the
[00:27:46] various
[00:27:47] articles
[00:27:48] but he
[00:27:50] put them
[00:27:50] on
[00:27:51] himself
[00:27:52] they fitted
[00:27:54] him even
[00:27:55] worse
[00:27:56] than tom
[00:27:57] kitten
[00:27:58] it's a
[00:28:00] very fine
[00:28:01] morning
[00:28:01] said
[00:28:03] mr
[00:28:03] drake
[00:28:04] puddleduck
[00:28:05] and
[00:28:06] he
[00:28:07] and jemima
[00:28:08] and rebecca
[00:28:09] puddleduck
[00:28:10] set off
[00:28:11] up the
[00:28:12] road
[00:28:12] keeping
[00:28:14] step
[00:28:14] pit
[00:28:16] pat
[00:28:16] paddle
[00:28:17] pat
[00:28:18] pit
[00:28:19] pat
[00:28:20] waddle
[00:28:21] pat
[00:28:22] then
[00:28:24] tabitha
[00:28:25] twitchett
[00:28:25] came down
[00:28:26] the garden
[00:28:27] and found
[00:28:28] her kittens
[00:28:29] on the
[00:28:30] wall
[00:28:30] with no
[00:28:32] clothes
[00:28:32] on
[00:28:34] she pulled
[00:28:36] them
[00:28:36] off
[00:28:36] the
[00:28:36] wall
[00:28:37] smacked
[00:28:38] them
[00:28:39] and took
[00:28:40] them back
[00:28:40] to the
[00:28:41] house
[00:28:42] my
[00:28:43] friends
[00:28:44] will
[00:28:44] arrive
[00:28:45] in a
[00:28:45] minute
[00:28:45] and you
[00:28:47] are not
[00:28:47] fit
[00:28:48] to be
[00:28:48] seen
[00:28:49] i
[00:28:50] am
[00:28:50] affronted
[00:28:51] said
[00:28:53] mrs tabitha
[00:28:54] twitchett
[00:28:55] she sent
[00:28:57] them
[00:28:57] upstairs
[00:28:58] and
[00:28:59] i am
[00:29:00] sorry
[00:29:00] to say
[00:29:01] she told
[00:29:02] her
[00:29:03] friends
[00:29:03] that they
[00:29:04] were in
[00:29:04] bed
[00:29:05] with the
[00:29:05] measles
[00:29:06] which
[00:29:07] was not
[00:29:08] true
[00:29:09] quite
[00:29:10] the
[00:29:10] contrary
[00:29:11] they
[00:29:12] were not
[00:29:13] in bed
[00:29:13] not
[00:29:15] in the
[00:29:16] least
[00:29:18] somehow
[00:29:18] there
[00:29:19] were
[00:29:20] very
[00:29:20] extraordinary
[00:29:21] noises
[00:29:22] overhead
[00:29:23] which
[00:29:25] disturbed
[00:29:25] the
[00:29:26] dignity
[00:29:26] and
[00:29:27] repose
[00:29:27] of the
[00:29:28] tea
[00:29:28] party
[00:29:30] as
[00:29:31] for the
[00:29:31] puddle
[00:29:32] ducks
[00:29:32] they
[00:29:33] went
[00:29:34] into
[00:29:34] a
[00:29:34] pond
[00:29:35] the
[00:29:37] clothes
[00:29:37] all
[00:29:38] came
[00:29:38] off
[00:29:38] directly
[00:29:39] because
[00:29:40] there
[00:29:41] were
[00:29:41] no
[00:29:42] buttons
[00:29:44] and
[00:29:45] mr
[00:29:45] drake
[00:29:46] puddle
[00:29:46] duck
[00:29:46] and
[00:29:47] jemima
[00:29:48] and
[00:29:49] rebecca
[00:29:49] have
[00:29:51] been
[00:29:51] looking
[00:29:51] for
[00:29:52] them
[00:29:52] ever
[00:29:53] since
