[00:03:21] We're going to soon join the world famous performer as she puts on a half-time show at a football game and makes a special friend.
[00:03:29] A grizzly bear named Kelsey.
[00:03:32] I know, it's exciting.
[00:03:34] So let's just dial down the noise a little and as you lie in bed, start extending your breathing a little bit.
[00:03:43] Breathe in nice and deep into your belly and then breathe out through your nose.
[00:03:51] Perhaps put your hands on your tummy so you can feel it rise as your breath goes in.
[00:03:58] And then soften as the breath flows out again.
[00:04:03] In.
[00:04:06] And out.
[00:04:08] Lovely.
[00:04:09] Close your eyes.
[00:04:11] Get really comfy.
[00:04:13] And I'm going to begin Swifty sings at the Chiefs game by Luke Prendergast.
[00:04:27] Ever since Swifty was a little girl growing up in a cosy nest tucked in the branch of a big old sycamore in the middle of sleepy forest, she'd wanted to be a singer.
[00:04:40] It was pretty much in the nature of songbirds like her to have a desire to sing, and she was no different.
[00:04:47] Every morning she would wake up, totter out to the edge of the branch and begin to warble.
[00:04:53] La la la la.
[00:04:55] But it wasn't long before she discovered something pretty special.
[00:04:59] It wasn't only that she wanted to sing.
[00:05:02] She was good at it too.
[00:05:04] Really good.
[00:05:06] All of the inhabitants of sleepy forest complimented her.
[00:05:11] And when she started to write her own songs and sing them from the treetops, they complimented her even more.
[00:05:19] She could really do this, they said.
[00:05:22] She could really become a singer.
[00:05:27] And so, for many years, she practiced.
[00:05:30] She sat in her bedroom writing her songs.
[00:05:33] And out in the forest, she sang them.
[00:05:36] She put on concerts.
[00:05:38] At first, tiny concerts where only a few people came and the applause was so quiet, it sounded like the pitter patter of little raindrops hitting the leaves.
[00:05:49] But then she put on bigger concerts.
[00:05:53] And even bigger ones than that.
[00:05:56] Where big crowds of people came and sang and danced with her.
[00:06:02] She recorded albums and she went on tour.
[00:06:06] She put in lots and lots of very hard work.
[00:06:11] And all that hard work paid off.
[00:06:14] Her dreams were coming true.
[00:06:17] She was really doing it.
[00:06:19] She was really being a singer.
[00:06:23] And now she was on her way to realizing another dream that she'd been harboring for quite some time.
[00:06:30] She'd been invited to perform during the halftime of a football game at the stadium of her absolute favorite team, the Chiefs.
[00:06:39] She'd always been a Chiefs fan.
[00:06:42] She used to watch the games when she was just a little chick, along with her dad and her brother.
[00:06:48] And she'd never played halftime at a football match before.
[00:06:51] She was very excited that her first time would be with the Chiefs.
[00:06:57] But there was another reason that Swifty was looking forward so much to going to the game.
[00:07:03] And that was because of the Chiefs star player, a grizzly bear called Kelsey.
[00:07:09] She had met him from time to time on her travels.
[00:07:13] And he was one of the friendliest and funniest and sweetest hearted creatures she had ever met.
[00:07:21] She'd never got a chance to spend more than a couple of minutes with him at one event or another.
[00:07:27] But every time she saw him, she came away wishing she could spend a bit longer with him.
[00:07:33] This time, she hoped that wish might come true.
[00:07:37] And if it did, she'd brought along a present for him.
[00:07:41] She truly hoped that he'd like it.
[00:07:44] Swifty flapped her wings and took off into the bright blue sky.
[00:07:49] There was still quite a way to fly before she made it to the Kansas Canyon, where the Chiefs stadium was.
[00:07:55] She didn't have any time to lose.
[00:08:00] The Chiefs stadium was nestled in a canyon, hewn out of golden sandstone.
[00:08:06] Towers of rock and craggy hills tumbled across the landscape.
[00:08:11] And out of the ground grew fine rushes of grass and trees whose leaves were pink and orange.
[00:08:19] Beside the stadium spread a vast lake like a huge blue plate, where silver fish swam and all kinds of birds and ducks paddled and splashed.
[00:08:32] On the edge of the lake grew willows and birches and other sorts of sleepy tree that dipped their branches down to touch the water.
[00:08:42] And in the shade of these trees, families of deer came to drink and quench their thirst.
[00:08:50] When Swifty arrived at the stadium, it was already busy.
[00:08:55] Crowds of fans queued up in orderly fashion outside the stadium, waiting patiently to gain entry.
[00:09:05] Many of them wore red and yellow the Chiefs team colours, but others of them were dressed up in sparkly dresses, cowboy boots, and other costumes that Swifty herself wore on stage.
[00:09:18] Which meant that some of the fans here had come not only to see the game, but to see her perform too.
[00:09:27] A warm, fuzzy feeling of appreciation moved through her at the thought of that.
[00:09:33] She loved her fans.
[00:09:36] She flapped her wings and flew over to a side entrance to the stadium, where the wolf security guard smiled and nodded to her.
[00:09:46] Welcome, Swifty, he said.
[00:09:48] Straight through here, please?
[00:09:50] Through she fluttered and made her way along the warren of tunnels that snaked beneath the stadium seats until she got to her dressing room, where she would put on her outfit, make sure her feathers were well primped, and warm up her voice for the performance.
[00:10:10] She put down her little purple knapsack and waved hello to her friend Gigi Haddock, who came with her whenever she was touring and performing, to ensure that she was always ready to do her best on stage.
[00:10:24] Hey, Gigi, she said.
[00:10:27] I have a few minutes before I need to get ready, don't I?
[00:10:32] Gigi Haddock gave a quack.
[00:10:34] Oh yes, you certainly do, Swifty, she said.
[00:10:39] Okay, Swifty told her.
[00:10:42] I won't be long.
[00:10:44] And she went back out into the corridor and began to climb the stairs to the seats right at the top of the stadium.
[00:10:52] Ever since she'd been performing in arenas and stadiums, even in little concert halls, she'd always had this ritual of going up to the highest seat before the event started.
[00:11:06] From up there, she found, looking down at the whole place spread out beneath her, and the stage she would perform on, gave her some perspective.
[00:11:17] It helped her feel calm before a big performance, made her feel like a little speck above the great big world.
[00:11:27] And up here, in the huge Chief Stadium, she would feel like a smaller speck than ever.
[00:11:35] When she got to the top, she sat in one of the folding blue seats and looked down.
[00:11:41] Row upon row of seats cascaded down before her, and far below, the grass of the pitch shone green.
[00:11:52] At the back of the pitch was a big statue in the shape of a football, painted with the Chief's name and logo.
[00:12:01] Right in the centre of this stadium, Swifty would be singing some of her favourite songs in just an hour or so's time.
[00:12:10] She wondered what it would sound like to hear the stadium crowd singing along.
[00:12:17] So lost was Swifty in this reverie that she didn't notice that she was not, in fact, alone up at the top of the stadium.
[00:12:26] Not until she heard someone quite near her clear their throat.
[00:12:31] When she turned in surprise, and saw that just a few seats away from her sat a grizzly bear, dressed in red and white football kit.
[00:12:42] It was him, Kelsey.
[00:12:45] How had you not seen him?
[00:12:47] Had he been there all along?
[00:12:50] Oh, hello there, she said.
[00:12:53] Suddenly, she felt a little bit shy.
[00:12:56] I didn't see you at all.
[00:12:59] I wonder if you remember me.
[00:13:03] We've met a couple of times before.
[00:13:05] I'm Swifty.
[00:13:07] I'm going to be singing during half-time today.
[00:13:10] Okay.
[00:13:11] Kelsey gave her a dashing smile.
[00:13:15] I know who you are, he said.
[00:13:19] You do?
[00:13:20] Swifty asked.
[00:13:22] Oh yes, Kelsey told her.
[00:13:25] I've been listening to your music for years.
[00:13:30] And then, he gave a little rendition of a couple of lines from one of her songs,
[00:13:35] and did a little shimmying dance with his shoulders which made her laugh.
[00:13:40] I'm Kelsey, he said.
[00:13:43] I'm on the Chiefs team.
[00:13:46] Oh, don't worry, she told him.
[00:13:48] I know who you are too.
[00:13:51] I'm really excited to watch the game.
[00:13:54] I've been a Chiefs fan for as long as I can remember.
[00:13:58] And they both smiled.
[00:14:02] So, what are you doing up here?
[00:14:04] She asked him.
[00:14:06] Shouldn't you be down there, getting ready for the big match?
[00:14:10] Kelsey gave a rumbling low laugh.
[00:14:15] I always come up here before a match, he said.
[00:14:20] It helps to give me some perspective, get my brain into gear.
[00:14:27] She looked at him, wonderstruck.
[00:14:30] How strange, she said.
[00:14:35] That's exactly why I come up here too.
[00:14:40] Is that right?
[00:14:42] He said.
[00:14:43] For an answer, she began to fish around in her pocket.
[00:14:49] Actually, she said.
[00:14:52] I was hoping that I'd bump into you.
[00:14:56] I wanted to give you something.
[00:14:58] And out of her pocket, she pulled a friendship bracelet that she'd made just that morning.
[00:15:04] It was made out of red and yellow beads.
[00:15:09] And the message on it read, Go Chiefs.
[00:15:14] She held out her wing and Kelsey held out his great big paw.
[00:15:19] She dropped the friendship bracelet into it and he slipped it over his wrist.
[00:15:24] His paw was so big that it only just fit.
[00:15:29] Thank you, he said.
[00:15:31] That's so kind of you.
[00:15:34] He gazed down at the bracelet and then looked back at Swifty.
[00:15:42] Maybe after the match finishes, he started to say.
[00:15:47] But then from below there was a loud whistle.
[00:15:51] And over the speakers, an announcement was made that the spectators were about to be let
[00:15:57] into the stadium.
[00:15:58] We better head off, Swifty said to him.
[00:16:01] Good luck.
[00:16:03] He wished her good luck too.
[00:16:06] And then they both had to hurry off to where they were going.
[00:16:10] Swifty made her way back down the stairs just as the fans were beginning to pour into the
[00:16:16] stadium grounds.
[00:16:17] Some of them recognized her and waved and said hello.
[00:16:21] She waved and smiled back and told them she was very glad to meet them, but that she had
[00:16:28] to go and get ready now.
[00:16:30] And she slipped back into the tunnels which led her back to her dressing room.
[00:16:36] You'll never guess who I just met, she said to Gigi as the duck helped put the final touches
[00:16:43] to her feathers.
[00:16:44] And she told her all that had happened up in the stands.
[00:16:49] Gigi pressed her hand to her mouth.
[00:16:52] Oh, this could be the beginning of a beautiful love story, she said.
[00:17:00] Gigi pressed her hand to her head.
[00:17:01] But Swiftie shushed her.
[00:17:03] She didn't want to tempt fate.
[00:17:05] She didn't want to jinx anything.
[00:17:08] But then, a few minutes later, there was a knock at her dressing room door.
[00:17:15] Swiftie called out to whoever it was to come in.
[00:17:18] And the door swung open to reveal a chipmunk, who was dressed in the same outfit as all
[00:17:25] the other creatures who worked at the chief stadium.
[00:17:28] And in his hands, he carried a bunch of bright yellow flowers.
[00:17:34] These are for you, Swiftie, the chipmunk said, handing over the blooms.
[00:17:40] From Kelsey.
[00:17:42] And with these words, the little chipmunk turned on his heels and left.
[00:17:49] Swiftie gazed down at the flowers in her hands.
[00:17:53] Their petals were the most magical colors.
[00:17:57] At the center, they were a deep red.
[00:18:00] But quickly they changed.
[00:18:02] Until, at their tips, they were a golden yellow.
[00:18:09] Those flowers are called gloriosa daisies.
[00:18:15] Gigi Haddock whispered.
[00:18:17] She knew all about flowers.
[00:18:19] She carried a book about botany with her wherever she went.
[00:18:24] And always liked to discover the local flora when they traveled on tour.
[00:18:29] They're flowers, which are native to Kansas, she went on.
[00:18:35] Aren't they beautiful?
[00:18:38] They certainly were beautiful, Swiftie thought.
[00:18:42] It was as though someone had flown up into the sky and bottled the color of sunset, poured it into the rich earth, and watched these very flowers grow.
[00:18:56] She saw a note nestled.
[00:18:59] She was called within the blooms, and reached a wing in to fish it out.
[00:19:04] Meet me in front of the hot dog stand, the note read.
[00:19:10] And it was signed off with just one letter, a simple K.
[00:19:17] Swifty turned to Gigi.
[00:19:20] Kelsey has asked to meet me at the hot dog stand, she said.
[00:19:27] Are you going to go? Gigi asked her.
[00:19:31] Swifty nodded.
[00:19:33] Yes, she said.
[00:19:35] I think I will.
[00:19:37] He seems very friendly after all, and I would like for us to be friends.
[00:19:44] Well then, you should go and meet him there after the game, Gigi said,
[00:19:49] with an excited little smile which Swifty couldn't resist joining in with.
[00:19:55] Soon, the whistle blew and the football match began.
[00:19:59] From inside her dressing room, Swifty and Gigi listened to the crowd shout and sigh, whoop and whistle.
[00:20:08] It seemed like a fairly exciting game.
[00:20:11] The opposite team was strong, but not as strong as the Chiefs, who kept an edge on them throughout the game.
[00:20:20] Before long, the noise of the crowd died down again.
[00:20:24] Half time had arrived, and the little chipmunk returned to tell Swifty it was time for her performance.
[00:20:33] Swifty stood up, gave herself one final look in the mirror,
[00:20:38] and followed the chipmunk through the stadium tunnels out into the green expanse of the pitch.
[00:20:45] She took a deep breath and stepped out.
[00:20:50] This was one of her favorite parts of being a singer.
[00:20:56] True, she loved sitting alone in her room with just her guitar and her quill pen,
[00:21:01] strumming chords and scrawling lyrics on scraps of paper.
[00:21:05] And she loved being in the recording studio too, adding all kinds of instruments to her inventions,
[00:21:14] until they were transformed into a rich tapestry of sound.
[00:21:18] But even better was when she got the chance to share those songs with other people,
[00:21:25] and there sure were a lot of people here.
[00:21:29] The sound of their cheers were like the roar of the ocean as Swifty climbed up onto the stage
[00:21:36] and picked up her guitar.
[00:21:39] She plucked her first note.
[00:21:42] Swifty sang some of her absolute favorite songs she'd ever written.
[00:21:48] She sang about how love was fearless, how you never saw it coming,
[00:21:54] and how when it did arrive and took you by surprise,
[00:21:59] it was like daylight spreading after a long, dark night.
[00:22:05] She sang about shaking and grooving.
[00:22:08] She sang about fate and joy and friendship.
[00:22:13] The crowd seemed to love it.
[00:22:16] They danced and sang along.
[00:22:18] And here and there, she saw little creatures smiling at each other and wiping tears from their eyes.
[00:22:26] That was the best feeling ever, to see how her music moved people.
[00:22:32] That was why Swifty loved what she did so much.
[00:22:40] When her performance was over,
[00:22:42] she left the stage to the sound of applause and returned to her dressing room.
[00:22:47] She felt flushed and happy.
[00:22:50] It had been a great performance indeed.
[00:22:55] Why don't we sneak out and watch the second half of the game?
[00:23:00] Gigi asked her.
[00:23:02] Swifty nodded.
[00:23:03] That sounded like an excellent idea.
[00:23:08] And so the two of them tiptoed through the corridors and found a quiet corner
[00:23:13] near the back of the stadium,
[00:23:15] where they could watch without attracting too much attention.
[00:23:20] The whistle blew for the second half.
[00:23:24] And Swifty and Gigi watched the players running back and forth,
[00:23:29] passing balls, forming scrums, touching balls over the line.
[00:23:35] And Swifty and Gigi agreed.
[00:23:37] Kelsey was definitely the best player on the team.
[00:23:42] He was so fast and so good at catching the ball.
[00:23:46] And he was very good at setting his teammates up to score.
[00:23:51] I'm sure he's going to get Animal of the Match, Gigi whispered to Swifty.
[00:23:58] Swifty nodded in reply.
[00:24:00] She certainly hoped so.
[00:24:03] She thought he deserved it.
[00:24:06] Sometime later, it might have been three seconds,
[00:24:09] it might have been three lifetimes,
[00:24:12] the whistle blew once more.
[00:24:14] And every creature in the stadium brought their hands together in applause.
[00:24:20] The Chiefs had won.
[00:24:22] Even Swifty found herself clapping and cheering.
[00:24:26] And then, once most of the crowd had started emptying from the stadium,
[00:24:31] she made her way down to the other side of the pitch.
[00:24:36] And there he was, just as he said.
[00:24:40] Kelsey, the grizzly bear, waiting for her in front of the hot dog stand.
[00:24:46] When he saw her, he broke out into a dazzling, toothy grin.
[00:24:51] I was hoping you'd come, he said.
[00:24:55] And she said,
[00:24:56] I was hoping you'd be here too.
[00:25:01] She congratulated him on his match,
[00:25:04] and especially on scoring the winning touchdown.
[00:25:07] And he told her that he thought she gave her best performance ever.
[00:25:12] He'd been watching from the sidelines.
[00:25:15] He hadn't been able to help having a bit of a boogie himself.
[00:25:20] On her way to meet him, she'd felt a little bit shy and nervous.
[00:25:25] But Kelsey was so kind and goofy that all her shyness fell away immediately.
[00:25:31] It was just like being with one of her oldest friends.
[00:25:36] That's how nice and normal it felt to hang out with him.
[00:25:41] So, she asked him,
[00:25:44] why did you ask me to meet you here?
[00:25:47] I was thinking, Kelsey said.
[00:25:52] You're new to Kansas,
[00:25:54] and it's a really beautiful place, I can tell you that much.
[00:25:59] I was wondering if you'd let me show you around the lake.
[00:26:04] There's a beautiful walk we could take.
[00:26:08] Swifty smiled at him.
[00:26:10] A walk around the lake sounded just wonderful.
[00:26:15] And so, Swifty and Kelsey stepped out of the Chief Stadium,
[00:26:21] where the last few spectators were making their way home.
[00:26:25] They waved to them,
[00:26:27] and took a photo with one young hippopotamus fan.
[00:26:30] And then they took the secret little dust track
[00:26:33] that led from the stadium down to the water's edge.
[00:26:36] The track was lined with pale, lush trees
[00:26:40] that spilt the last appled rays of sunlight onto the ground.
[00:26:45] By the time they reached the lake,
[00:26:48] the sun had almost set,
[00:26:50] and the surface of the water sparkled red and gold.
[00:26:56] It's beautiful, Swifty whispered,
[00:27:00] as she watched glittering ripples spread across the surface.
[00:27:04] And here and there,
[00:27:06] a little fish poked its head out to kiss the air.
[00:27:10] Oh, sure, Kelsey agreed.
[00:27:14] It surely, surely is.
[00:27:17] He led her on the path that curved around the lake.
[00:27:21] They passed beneath the low-hanging branches of the trees,
[00:27:26] their small pointed leaves turning lilac in the twilight.
[00:27:31] They met a group of deer drinking at the water's edge
[00:27:35] and smiled at them and said good evening.
[00:27:39] And when they came across a beaver
[00:27:41] carrying a piece of wood down the path,
[00:27:44] they waited and let her pass.
[00:27:47] The beaver thanked them both and nodded her head.
[00:27:51] And then they carried on with their walk all the time,
[00:27:56] listening to the gentle lapping of the water on the lake's edge,
[00:28:01] the sound of cicadas chirping in the bushes,
[00:28:05] the whispering of the breeze as it gossiped with the leaves.
[00:28:11] On the far side of the lake,
[00:28:13] they came to a small wooden jetty
[00:28:15] where a little rowing boat was docked.
[00:28:19] Kelsey pointed down the jetty with a big paw
[00:28:23] and Swifty looked at him with her wide-eyed gaze.
[00:28:29] We're going on the rowing boat?
[00:28:32] She asked him.
[00:28:35] Only if you want to, he said.
[00:28:39] Oh yes, she said.
[00:28:41] I think I would.
[00:28:44] He helped her into the rowing boat
[00:28:46] and once she was seated comfortably,
[00:28:49] Kelsey unwound the rope that was tying them to the jetty.
[00:28:53] Then he sat down himself,
[00:28:56] lifted the oars with his paws
[00:28:59] and began to row them out into the lake.
[00:29:03] Swifty was a songbird.
[00:29:06] Air was her true element,
[00:29:09] not the water.
[00:29:10] But, gliding across the glassy lake now,
[00:29:15] she was reminded of flight.
[00:29:18] The way, against all odds,
[00:29:21] the air can hold you aloft
[00:29:23] instead of letting you fall.
[00:29:26] The wonder of it,
[00:29:27] the joy of it,
[00:29:29] the feeling of flying and falling.
[00:29:34] All at once, then,
[00:29:36] a familiar feeling came to her,
[00:29:39] as though something were being born in her brain.
[00:29:44] It was the feeling of a new song idea.
[00:29:48] And she knew that when she got home,
[00:29:52] she would sit on her bed with her quill pen and paper
[00:29:55] and scrawl down some fresh lyrics
[00:29:58] inspired by that very moment.
[00:30:02] But for now, she relaxed
[00:30:05] and let herself enjoy the journey across the water.
[00:30:10] She peered over the edge of the boat
[00:30:14] and saw her wobbly reflection in the lake,
[00:30:18] her golden curls,
[00:30:21] her feathers,
[00:30:22] her goofy smile.
[00:30:23] On a nearby lily pad,
[00:30:27] a frog croaked
[00:30:29] and splashed down into the water.
[00:30:33] Kelsey rode them back across the lake
[00:30:37] towards the stadium
[00:30:38] as the stars
[00:30:40] peeked out in the sky,
[00:30:43] blinking down at them.
[00:30:46] It was so peaceful.
[00:30:50] Swifty couldn't remember
[00:30:52] the last time
[00:30:53] she had felt so at peace.
[00:30:56] As he rode,
[00:30:58] Kelsey told her stories about his life
[00:31:01] and she told him ones about hers.
[00:31:06] It turned out they had a lot in common
[00:31:09] and they made each other laugh
[00:31:11] with all of their jokes.
[00:31:14] At the far end of the lake,
[00:31:17] Kelsey tied the rowing boat to a dock
[00:31:20] and helped her back out onto dry land.
[00:31:25] Thank you, she said to him.
[00:31:28] That was such a fun evening.
[00:31:32] I don't think I've ever seen a lake
[00:31:36] quite as beautiful as that one.
[00:31:40] Oh yes, he said.
[00:31:43] It really was special,
[00:31:46] wasn't it?
[00:31:48] And as they smiled at each other then,
[00:31:52] Swifty had a glimpse of the future.
[00:31:56] The two of them would be friends forever.
[00:32:00] And soon she would write a whole new album
[00:32:04] of songs all about Kelsey
[00:32:07] and going on tour with him accompanying her.
[00:32:12] She didn't know if it was the future
[00:32:15] or just a dream.
[00:32:17] But she had a knack of making her dreams come true.
[00:32:23] Would you like to see me again tomorrow?
[00:32:27] Kelsey asked her.
[00:32:29] I'd love to show you more of the canyon.
[00:32:33] There are cool rocks to climb
[00:32:35] and many friendly animals to meet.
[00:32:39] Swifty nodded.
[00:32:41] She would like that very much.
[00:32:45] And so Swifty returned to her room,
[00:32:49] buoyed as though she were being carried on a bubble.
[00:32:53] She brushed her beak.
[00:32:55] She got into her pajamas.
[00:32:58] She tucked herself into bed.
[00:33:00] She lifted her book from the nightstand
[00:33:04] and read a few pages,
[00:33:07] but soon found her eyes drifting closed
[00:33:12] as sleep came over her.
[00:33:15] So she slipped her bookmark between the pages,
[00:33:21] lay her book on the nightstand
[00:33:23] and turned over onto her side.
[00:33:28] She yawned.
[00:33:30] She stretched her tired wings
[00:33:33] and she fell into a deep and peaceful sleep
[00:33:39] full of dreams of the future,
[00:33:43] of the next day
[00:33:44] when she'd get to go exploring
[00:33:47] with her new friend Kelsey
[00:33:50] and all the days after that.
[00:33:55] All the dreams she had
[00:33:57] which she wanted.
[00:34:00] to make come true.
[00:34:02] To make come true.
