Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Koala Moon, a podcast of
00:00:14
Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime
00:00:19
Speaker 1: a tree. What do you think of when you imagine
00:00:24
Speaker 1: a cactus, porcupine, hedgehog, lionfish? What do they all have
00:00:33
Speaker 1: in common? Spines? Right, needle sharp, prickly spines. But have
00:00:40
Speaker 1: you ever thought about what's going on inside, what's underneath
00:00:46
Speaker 1: all that prickly armor. Well, tonight you might just find out.
00:00:53
Speaker 1: Soon I'm going to fly you all the way over
00:00:56
Speaker 1: to the Mexican desert, where you are going to meet
00:00:59
Speaker 1: a kind cactus called Rosa. Rosa loves her home in
00:01:04
Speaker 1: the desert, but she still dreams of adventure and friendship.
00:01:09
Speaker 1: Despite her spiny, prickly exterior, all she really wants is
00:01:15
Speaker 1: a cuddle. Snuggle down as I read you The Cactus
00:01:20
Speaker 1: who Wanted a Cuddle by Susanna McLaughlin. Under the warm
00:01:32
Speaker 1: orange sun, in a vast desert in Mexico, there stood
00:01:37
Speaker 1: a single cactus named Rosa. Rosa was large and impressive,
00:01:42
Speaker 1: with shiny spines all over her body, including her two
00:01:47
Speaker 1: dark green limbs, which stretch out on either side of her.
00:01:52
Speaker 1: She had carefully grown herself as small orange flower, which
00:01:56
Speaker 1: sits perched on her head. Prosa was happy in the desert.
00:02:02
Speaker 1: She spent her days in the wilderness, watching the endless
00:02:06
Speaker 1: desert skies turned from pink to purple, to blue, and
00:02:11
Speaker 1: to streaky orange and pink once more before it turned
00:02:16
Speaker 1: inky black and became covered with hundreds and thousands of
00:02:22
Speaker 1: twinky stars. She looked out across the sand, being warmed
00:02:28
Speaker 1: and relaxed by the sun and then bathed in the
00:02:32
Speaker 1: calm of the moon. She saw rolling hills rising in
00:02:37
Speaker 1: the distance before her, and a stretch of desert empty
00:02:43
Speaker 1: and clear, aside from some other cacti like her far
00:02:47
Speaker 1: far away on the horizon. She enjoyed watching lizards and
00:02:53
Speaker 1: insects scuttling by, and she always called out her hello. However,
00:03:01
Speaker 1: Rosa wished she had some friends nearby to teach her
00:03:04
Speaker 1: about the world beyond her patch of desert. The other
00:03:09
Speaker 1: animals didn't often stop to chat. They all thought she
00:03:13
Speaker 1: must be a prickly character due to her long, pointy spines.
00:03:19
Speaker 1: This cactus was not prickly, though, not at all. She
00:03:24
Speaker 1: was a happy, loving plant, and all she wanted was
00:03:29
Speaker 1: a cuddle and a friend to talk to. Rosa did
00:03:34
Speaker 1: everything she could to look more cuddly. She concentrated really
00:03:38
Speaker 1: hard and carefully grew three more flowers on top of
00:03:43
Speaker 1: her head, one blue, one pink, and one more orange.
00:03:50
Speaker 1: Orange was her favorite color. After all, She wore this
00:03:54
Speaker 1: new flower crown and beamed a big smile at all
00:03:58
Speaker 1: the creatures that scutted by. Some smiled back now that
00:04:04
Speaker 1: she wore her crown, In particular, a large tortoise named Thomas,
00:04:10
Speaker 1: who plodded slowly by. He had a big, dusty brown
00:04:14
Speaker 1: shell splodged with shades of amber and cream. His skin
00:04:20
Speaker 1: was wrinkly, and he wore a big, toothless smile. His
00:04:26
Speaker 1: face was friendly and peaceful. Rosa asked Thomas where he
00:04:33
Speaker 1: was going. He said he was headed over the hill,
00:04:37
Speaker 1: as there was an oasis there. He described it as
00:04:41
Speaker 1: a glistening turquoise pool, as clear as glass, sparkling in
00:04:47
Speaker 1: the sunlight. He said it was the most deliciously cool
00:04:52
Speaker 1: and crisp water in the world, especially tasty in the
00:04:58
Speaker 1: dry heat of the desert. Rosa had never seen or
00:05:04
Speaker 1: heard of such a place, but she enjoyed dreaming about it.
00:05:10
Speaker 1: What is over that hill there, she asked. Over there,
00:05:18
Speaker 1: there is a town of people, the tortoise said. He
00:05:23
Speaker 1: explained that in the town people worked and played and
00:05:27
Speaker 1: sang music together. He said there were dogs running between
00:05:32
Speaker 1: colorful market stalls, playing with the children. He said, there
00:05:37
Speaker 1: were guitar bands and parties and plenty of delicious food.
00:05:44
Speaker 1: He said there were houses there painted terra cotta, and
00:05:48
Speaker 1: shops and small restaurants where the waiters wore embroidered aprons.
00:05:54
Speaker 1: And there were many, many flowers there too, lots of
00:05:59
Speaker 1: green leafy plants, shrubs, and trees in little pots. Rosa
00:06:05
Speaker 1: thought it sounded wonderful all those people together having fun.
00:06:13
Speaker 1: Thomas had continued plodding by as they had been chatting.
00:06:17
Speaker 1: He did move rather slowly, after all, Rosa would have
00:06:23
Speaker 1: enjoyed talking to him all day and learning more about
00:06:27
Speaker 1: the world that lay out of sight. But he had
00:06:32
Speaker 1: an oasis to visit, and he was nearly out of
00:06:36
Speaker 1: hearing range. His hearing did not range far. As he
00:06:40
Speaker 1: was a tortoise, he had no ears on his little
00:06:43
Speaker 1: round head. Thomas and Rosa call goodbye to one another,
00:06:50
Speaker 1: and the cactus watched as he slowly made his way
00:06:54
Speaker 1: across the desert and over the hill, looking around with
00:06:58
Speaker 1: a content smile. On his face. Rosa was very happy
00:07:03
Speaker 1: that the tortoise had chatted with her. She wiggled the
00:07:07
Speaker 1: flowers on the top of her head happily, and spent
00:07:11
Speaker 1: the next four peaceful days and nights dreaming of the
00:07:16
Speaker 1: world beyond the hills. Not many animals passed her by
00:07:22
Speaker 1: in this time, and none of them were very chatty.
00:07:26
Speaker 1: Her hare hopped by, looking puzzledly at her spines before
00:07:31
Speaker 1: galloping on over the hill. The little desert fox with
00:07:37
Speaker 1: big pointy ears sniffed around the ground, but he was
00:07:42
Speaker 1: too focused on the scent to pause and notice Rosa.
00:07:48
Speaker 1: A few butterflies landed on her head one afternoon, sniffing
00:07:53
Speaker 1: at her flowers, and Rosa laughed as their wings tickled
00:07:58
Speaker 1: her petals. On the fourth night, Rosa had drifted off
00:08:04
Speaker 1: to sleep, imagining how beautiful all of the night's stars
00:08:10
Speaker 1: must look being reflected on the ripples of the moonlit oasis.
00:08:17
Speaker 1: She was smiling as she slept, swaying gently in the
00:08:22
Speaker 1: warm evening breeze, But all of a sudden she awoke
00:08:28
Speaker 1: from her snooze as she felt a prickle on her leg.
00:08:33
Speaker 1: She looked down towards her feet. There was a little
00:08:37
Speaker 1: creature looking back up at her hello, she said. The
00:08:44
Speaker 1: creature apologized. The animal shuffled on its little feet and
00:08:50
Speaker 1: explained that he had noticed Rosa standing there. He had
00:08:55
Speaker 1: spines too, you see, and so he thought they could
00:08:59
Speaker 1: be friends. He was an adventurous little porcupine, and he
00:09:04
Speaker 1: had lots of tales to tell her. Rosa's heart soared
00:09:11
Speaker 1: the spiky little creature had given her a hug. She
00:09:16
Speaker 1: beamed at the prick of the animal. He had a
00:09:20
Speaker 1: big pink nose with two goofy little teeth sticking out
00:09:24
Speaker 1: below it. He had kind brown eyes and little paws,
00:09:30
Speaker 1: which he bopped back and forth on bashfully. His brown
00:09:35
Speaker 1: fairy body was covered in long, black and white spines,
00:09:40
Speaker 1: many more than Rosa, and they were much pointier too.
00:09:45
Speaker 1: He introduced himself as Paolo the Porcupine. Rosa was in
00:09:52
Speaker 1: awe to meet someone so kind who seemed to understand
00:09:57
Speaker 1: her feelings so deeply. She knew right away that Paolo
00:10:03
Speaker 1: was her friend. Paolo and Rosa sat under the stars
00:10:10
Speaker 1: and chatted for a while. Eventually they both drifted off
00:10:17
Speaker 1: to sleep. Rosa swayed gently and Paolo laid in the
00:10:23
Speaker 1: sand on his spines pointing his little belly in the
00:10:28
Speaker 1: air towards the moon, snoring softly. When they awoke, the
00:10:36
Speaker 1: sky was pink. Paolo told Rosa he had been headed
00:10:41
Speaker 1: into town. When they crossed paths, Rosa sighed dreamily and
00:10:48
Speaker 1: said she would like to hear of his adventures there,
00:10:52
Speaker 1: for she dreamed of going to the town too. Paolo
00:10:58
Speaker 1: went quiet think for a while. He told Rosa that
00:11:03
Speaker 1: he would see her very soon and bade her goodbye,
00:11:08
Speaker 1: wiggling a little poor at her before shuffling off across
00:11:13
Speaker 1: the dust a little spiky ball moving through the desert.
00:11:21
Speaker 1: Rosa waited for two days, excited for Paolo to return.
00:11:28
Speaker 1: At midday, on the second day, she saw a spiky
00:11:32
Speaker 1: little shape returning towards her across the landscape. Paolo appeared
00:11:40
Speaker 1: to be pulling something along behind him, and a little
00:11:44
Speaker 1: figure was at his side. Paolo said a happy hello
00:11:49
Speaker 1: to Rosa when he arrived at her side and introduced
00:11:54
Speaker 1: his friend. His friend was a big dog called shollow
00:12:00
Speaker 1: Schollo was soft and brown, with big, flappy ears which
00:12:05
Speaker 1: pointed straight up in the air. He stood tall on
00:12:09
Speaker 1: long legs and smiled, his tongue lolling panting in the sun.
00:12:16
Speaker 1: Rosa was happy to meet him. Paolo explained that after
00:12:21
Speaker 1: meeting Rosa, he had been considering her dreams of adventure.
00:12:26
Speaker 1: He had an idea. His friend, Shollo, was the town
00:12:30
Speaker 1: gardener's dog. Paolo had met Sholo when climbing a tree
00:12:35
Speaker 1: in his garden. Scholo was very impressed with the way
00:12:40
Speaker 1: Paolo used his tail to climb the tall tree. He
00:12:44
Speaker 1: said that he looked like a spiny monkey. Paolo had
00:12:49
Speaker 1: asked for Shollo's help. Together, they were going to take
00:12:55
Speaker 1: Rosa on an adventure. They borrowed some tools from Shod's owner,
00:13:01
Speaker 1: a trailer, a little shovel, some big gardening gloves, and
00:13:06
Speaker 1: a big terracotta plant pot, which had been painted with
00:13:09
Speaker 1: beautiful blooms, just like the one's Rosa wore on her head.
00:13:15
Speaker 1: The two creatures set to work digging the dirt around
00:13:20
Speaker 1: Rosa's feet. Shallow whistled a jolly tune as they worked,
00:13:25
Speaker 1: and Paolo hummed along. Shallow carried a lovely tune, but
00:13:31
Speaker 1: Paolo was a little off key. Rosa didn't mind, though,
00:13:35
Speaker 1: she was so happy to be with her new friends
00:13:39
Speaker 1: that she thought it was the most beautiful song in
00:13:42
Speaker 1: the world. With the soil loosened and a soft bed
00:13:48
Speaker 1: lining the pot. Shallow put the tough gloves over his
00:13:52
Speaker 1: paws and carefully lifted Rosa in patting down the soil
00:13:59
Speaker 1: so that she fell snug and supported in her new
00:14:03
Speaker 1: portable home. They both placed their paws on either side
00:14:10
Speaker 1: of the pot, and after the count of three, hoisted
00:14:16
Speaker 1: her up onto the trailer. Schollo barked twice, pleased with
00:14:22
Speaker 1: their work, and Paolo did a happy dance, standing on
00:14:27
Speaker 1: his stubby back legs and wiggling his front paws in
00:14:31
Speaker 1: the air. Rosa couldn't believe that she was ready to
00:14:37
Speaker 1: go on an adventure and finally discover what lay over
00:14:44
Speaker 1: the hills. Paolo told Rosa that first they were going
00:14:50
Speaker 1: to the oasis. Schollo said he wished he could come along,
00:14:56
Speaker 1: but he had to return the tools to his owner,
00:14:58
Speaker 1: who had a very busy afternoon reportting succulents in the
00:15:03
Speaker 1: town square. He told Rosa, though, that she needn't worry
00:15:08
Speaker 1: about returning the pot and the trailer. His owner had
00:15:12
Speaker 1: just gotten a shiny new wheelbarrow and wanted to give
00:15:16
Speaker 1: his old trailer along with the pot, to the special
00:15:20
Speaker 1: cactus that his loving pet had told him all about
00:15:26
Speaker 1: Scholo said he hoped that Rosa and Paolo would come
00:15:30
Speaker 1: to town that night for a party, where Rosa could
00:15:34
Speaker 1: hear the town folks music and make some new friends.
00:15:39
Speaker 1: Roza couldn't believe it. She cried one happy tear, only
00:15:47
Speaker 1: one of course, water was scarce in the desert. She
00:15:52
Speaker 1: thanked Sholo and they parted ways. Paolo and Rosa headed
00:15:59
Speaker 1: up the hill. Paolo clutched the pulley of the trailer
00:16:04
Speaker 1: with his strong tail and tootled over the dirt, pulling
00:16:10
Speaker 1: Rosa with ease behind him. As they neared the brow
00:16:15
Speaker 1: of the hill, Rosa saw something in the distance, a
00:16:20
Speaker 1: cluster of cacti just like her. Paolo toddled over to
00:16:27
Speaker 1: the cacti and they all turned to look with wonderment
00:16:32
Speaker 1: on their faces. They had never seen a cactus moving before.
00:16:39
Speaker 1: They all introduced themselves with a smile. The cacti's names
00:16:45
Speaker 1: were Cortes, Cedro, Cala, and Kotia, and they all were
00:16:52
Speaker 1: so pleased to meet Rosa. They had seen her in
00:16:56
Speaker 1: the distance from their hill, and they were so happy
00:17:00
Speaker 1: that she had come to say hello. They were pleased
00:17:03
Speaker 1: to meet Paolo too, and they complimented him on the
00:17:07
Speaker 1: length and shine of his spines. Rosa asked calah Cotti,
00:17:14
Speaker 1: Cedro and Cortez if they too wanted trailers of their own.
00:17:20
Speaker 1: They said they didn't need trailers. They were happy on
00:17:23
Speaker 1: their hill where they could look down over the plains,
00:17:27
Speaker 1: the town and the oasis, all happily together. They did
00:17:33
Speaker 1: ask her if she would visit them again. Rosa said
00:17:37
Speaker 1: she would, and she and Paolo continued their journey over
00:17:41
Speaker 1: the hill. She saw the oasis from up high, lit
00:17:47
Speaker 1: up with the golden afternoon sunshine. It was breathtaking. Their
00:17:56
Speaker 1: descent down the hill was easy because Paolo could simply
00:18:00
Speaker 1: let her go. Rosa rolled on her wheels freely down
00:18:06
Speaker 1: the hill, coming to a stop at the soft sand
00:18:10
Speaker 1: that surrounded the oasis. Paulo jumped into the air and
00:18:16
Speaker 1: wrapped himself in a little ball, rolling around and around,
00:18:22
Speaker 1: tumbling happily down the hill, protected from any stones by
00:18:28
Speaker 1: his spines. Both were laughing happily together. When they reached
00:18:34
Speaker 1: the water. The water was so light, so bright, and
00:18:40
Speaker 1: so beautiful. It was turquoise and deep, and they could
00:18:46
Speaker 1: look down into its depths as easily as looking through
00:18:50
Speaker 1: a window. Paolo dove in and Rosa giggled as water
00:18:57
Speaker 1: splashed her, refreshingly cool in the warm air. The little
00:19:03
Speaker 1: porcupine swam in loops around the oasis, propelling himself with
00:19:10
Speaker 1: his little tail. His arms and legs were too short
00:19:14
Speaker 1: to swim on their own. He splashed Rosa whenever he passed.
00:19:20
Speaker 1: They both enjoyed their afternoon immensely. Rosa loved watching a
00:19:28
Speaker 1: twinkling light on the water, and she was happy to
00:19:32
Speaker 1: see other animals having fun too. She saw Thomas, her
00:19:38
Speaker 1: tortoise friend, on the other side of the pool. She
00:19:42
Speaker 1: didn't talk to him, though, because he was snoozing peacefully
00:19:46
Speaker 1: in the sun. Sleepy lizards of all kinds lolled on
00:19:53
Speaker 1: the water's edge, little darting lizards with shiny brown skin,
00:20:00
Speaker 1: and big, leathery green lizards with wise bulging eyes and
00:20:06
Speaker 1: long tails. When the sun had moved further across the sky,
00:20:13
Speaker 1: it was time for the two friends to return over
00:20:17
Speaker 1: the hill and head towards town. Rosa had excited butterflies
00:20:24
Speaker 1: in her stomach, as she had never met people before,
00:20:30
Speaker 1: although sometimes she had seen their big shiny vehicles zoom
00:20:35
Speaker 1: through the dust far in the distance. She had heard
00:20:40
Speaker 1: so much about the joyous town folk, and she was
00:20:45
Speaker 1: excited to meet them. They made their way up the
00:20:51
Speaker 1: hill and rolled back down again. They crossed the flat
00:20:56
Speaker 1: of the desert, humming together as they went. As the
00:21:01
Speaker 1: first star began to twinkle in the sky, they heard
00:21:06
Speaker 1: the sound of lively music, which beckoned them across the
00:21:11
Speaker 1: sand towards town. Paolo would skip with every couple of steps,
00:21:19
Speaker 1: almost in time to the music. He wasn't the most
00:21:23
Speaker 1: rhythmic porcupine, but he did love music. They arrived at
00:21:30
Speaker 1: the town square and were amazed by its beauty. There
00:21:35
Speaker 1: were men and women and children in colorful clothes, dancing
00:21:41
Speaker 1: and eating and laughing together. The band played guitars of
00:21:48
Speaker 1: different shapes and sizes, and they all sang with enthusiasm.
00:21:55
Speaker 1: There were many plants like Rosa in pots and flower
00:22:00
Speaker 1: beds around the square, and animals too, dogs and cats
00:22:06
Speaker 1: and lizards and birds, all enjoying the music. Schollo emerged
00:22:15
Speaker 1: from under one of the tables, which was laden with
00:22:18
Speaker 1: delicious looking food, and greeted the animals. He introduced them
00:22:25
Speaker 1: to all of his friends, and they all danced together.
00:22:30
Speaker 1: Rosa and Paolo were so happy. At the end of
00:22:36
Speaker 1: the night, Rosa thought it must be time to return
00:22:40
Speaker 1: to the desert. She said goodbye to her new friends.
00:22:45
Speaker 1: She had spoken to the flowers in the shrubbery, who
00:22:49
Speaker 1: had told her of all the merriment that they observed
00:22:53
Speaker 1: every day. She had laughed with playful puppies and shimmeied
00:22:59
Speaker 1: her spines to the lively music. She had had a
00:23:04
Speaker 1: wonderful time, but it was time to go to bed.
00:23:10
Speaker 1: Hopefully she could return one day. She was sure Paolo
00:23:15
Speaker 1: would be her friend forever, and that he would be
00:23:19
Speaker 1: happy to wheel her around on more adventures. Paulo yawned,
00:23:25
Speaker 1: and Rosa smiled. Let's go back to the desert, she said.
00:23:33
Speaker 1: Paulo wrapped his tail around the pulley on the trailer
00:23:38
Speaker 1: and began to wheel her back towards the road. Both
00:23:44
Speaker 1: had sleepy eyes and tired bodies. They were ready to snooze.
00:23:51
Speaker 1: As they moved away, someone called out to them. It
00:23:56
Speaker 1: was the town gardener. Rosa and Paolo had met him
00:24:02
Speaker 1: earlier in the night and thanked him for his kindness.
00:24:06
Speaker 1: He had gray hair and crinkly brown eyes. His skin
00:24:11
Speaker 1: was tanned from all the time he spent outdoors tending
00:24:16
Speaker 1: his plants attentively, and with great care. He wore faded
00:24:23
Speaker 1: overalls and a colorful shirt. All of the townsfolk seemed
00:24:29
Speaker 1: to light color and kindness. Where are you going, the
00:24:35
Speaker 1: gardener asked, You may return to the desert if you
00:24:39
Speaker 1: really wish. I know the nature is beautiful out there.
00:24:44
Speaker 1: It is incredibly peaceful in the stillness of the desert
00:24:49
Speaker 1: under a million stars. But if you would like, you
00:24:56
Speaker 1: may both stay here too, as a lovely spot in
00:25:00
Speaker 1: my garden for Eurosa and I know shallows kennel has
00:25:04
Speaker 1: plenty of space for a little porcupine like you, Paulo.
00:25:10
Speaker 1: The two friends looked at one another, beaming with happiness.
00:25:16
Speaker 1: They had found their family. They journeyed to the gardener's yard.
00:25:24
Speaker 1: He had a beautiful garden with curling vines and beautiful
00:25:30
Speaker 1: tropical flowers. Each one was watered, trimmed, and tended to
00:25:37
Speaker 1: with love. In one corner there was a dusty flower
00:25:43
Speaker 1: bed full of cacti of all shapes and sizes, some spiny,
00:25:51
Speaker 1: some fuzzy, some smooth. Not far away with shallows kennel,
00:25:58
Speaker 1: a fairly large handmade wooden structure painted in turquoise, pinks
00:26:05
Speaker 1: and yellows. Schollo was already snoozing on a soft patch
00:26:11
Speaker 1: of grass nearby, his long snout poised on sleepy paws,
00:26:19
Speaker 1: his tongue still lulling as usual, he looked perfectly peaceful.
00:26:27
Speaker 1: Rosa chose her place in the gardener's yard. She asked
00:26:33
Speaker 1: to sleep near the low wooden fence, so that in
00:26:36
Speaker 1: the morning, when she awoke at sunrise, she could watch
00:26:40
Speaker 1: the streets of the town beginning to swell with life,
00:26:45
Speaker 1: with children wobbling by on bicycles, and the scent of
00:26:50
Speaker 1: the baker's fresh bread drifting on the morning breeze. She
00:26:57
Speaker 1: had been dreaming of these things, was finally her chance
00:27:02
Speaker 1: to see them. To her left slept a tall cactus, too,
00:27:09
Speaker 1: with flowers of purple on her head. She too wore
00:27:14
Speaker 1: a flower crown like Rosa, for she too was happy
00:27:19
Speaker 1: and full of life. Rosa breathed in the cool air.
00:27:27
Speaker 1: Paolo parked her trailer and said good night. He tottered
00:27:33
Speaker 1: sleepily towards his new home and entered the kennel, where
00:27:38
Speaker 1: he wrapped himself in one of the comfy woven blankets
00:27:43
Speaker 1: the Shallow had collected there. He knew that the generous
00:27:49
Speaker 1: Shallow would be more than happy to share. He and
00:27:56
Speaker 1: Rosa drifted off to sleep. They were so happy and
00:28:03
Speaker 1: peaceful under the stars. The happy cactus and friendly porcupine
00:28:11
Speaker 1: lived in the gardener's garden from then on, and they
00:28:16
Speaker 1: never tired of going on adventures. They strolled through the town,
00:28:23
Speaker 1: rolled down many hills, and swam in many a blue oasis.
00:28:31
Speaker 1: The two lived happily there, wrapped up in the glow
00:28:36
Speaker 1: of their new friendships and the comfort of their new home.
