00:01:50
Speaker 1: it out loud, just think quietly about what or who
00:01:55
Speaker 1: you are especially grateful for. Maybe it's your friendship, her
00:02:01
Speaker 1: lovely teacher who helped you, a pet who came into
00:02:05
Speaker 1: your life. Possibly it's your lovely warm bed, or the
00:02:10
Speaker 1: food you had tonight. Enjoy thinking about it and let
00:02:14
Speaker 1: your breathing steady, maybe sigh a little and take some
00:02:19
Speaker 1: lovely easy breaths. Great. So now stay with those thoughts
00:02:27
Speaker 1: of thanks and I'll introduce you to tonight's tale. The
00:02:32
Speaker 1: family we're about to meet is preparing for their Thanksgiving feast,
00:02:37
Speaker 1: but unfortunately, in their rush, they leave their pumpkin pie
00:02:41
Speaker 1: on the supermarket checkout. Luckily for them, they selected a
00:02:46
Speaker 1: plucky pie who is willing to find her own way
00:02:49
Speaker 1: to their table. This is the Pumpkin Pie Adventure by
00:02:54
Speaker 1: Luke Prendergast. Thanksgiving was approaching outside. The leaves on the
00:03:07
Speaker 1: trees had turned gold and orange and red, and the
00:03:10
Speaker 1: days were getting shorter. Now at night time, the moon
00:03:15
Speaker 1: was a big, cheesy grin in the sky. Potatoes were
00:03:19
Speaker 1: being mashed, cranberries were being stewed, and decorations were being
00:03:24
Speaker 1: put up in all the houses across town. In one
00:03:29
Speaker 1: aisle of the supermarket, the shelves had been lined with
00:03:32
Speaker 1: pumpkin pies. All of these pumpkin pies had been baked
00:03:37
Speaker 1: especially for the holiday season, and each and every one
00:03:41
Speaker 1: of them couldn't wait to be chosen by a happy
00:03:43
Speaker 1: customer and taken to the checkout, rung through the till,
00:03:47
Speaker 1: and then get carried home to take pride of place
00:03:50
Speaker 1: in the center of the Thanksgiving table. One by one,
00:03:56
Speaker 1: the pumpkin pies were chosen, lifted from the shelves by
00:04:01
Speaker 1: families young and old, others by newlywed couples. Others yet
00:04:07
Speaker 1: by groups of friends spending the holiday seasons away from
00:04:11
Speaker 1: their parents. Some were taken by old ladies with gray
00:04:15
Speaker 1: in their hair, others by young children whose fathers had
00:04:19
Speaker 1: lifted them up by the waists so that they could
00:04:21
Speaker 1: reach the top shelf. Finally, there was only one pumpkin
00:04:27
Speaker 1: pie left, whose name was Patty. Even though Patty was
00:04:32
Speaker 1: a particularly beautiful looking pie with a crisp crust and
00:04:37
Speaker 1: rich orange surface with a bright sheen. All her friends
00:04:42
Speaker 1: had been selected first. This might have been because she
00:04:47
Speaker 1: was stacked at the back of the shelf, but she
00:04:49
Speaker 1: wasn't worried. She was a very optimistic pumpkin pie, and
00:04:54
Speaker 1: she was sure that sooner or later someone would arrive,
00:04:57
Speaker 1: chosen by destiny, to take her home for Thanksgiving. And
00:05:03
Speaker 1: she was right. On the morning of Thanksgiving itself, a
00:05:07
Speaker 1: woman lifted Patty right off the shelf. Why do you think, Martin,
00:05:14
Speaker 1: the woman asked, showing Patty to her son, a boy
00:05:17
Speaker 1: of about seven years old who was wearing a red
00:05:20
Speaker 1: plaid shirt and a scarf. That one looks perfect, Martin
00:05:26
Speaker 1: replied to his mum, I thought so too, she said,
00:05:31
Speaker 1: and placed the pumpkin pie in her shopping trolley alongside
00:05:35
Speaker 1: everything else she was taking home that day. Patty said
00:05:39
Speaker 1: hello to them, all the alms, the corn bread, the stuffing,
00:05:43
Speaker 1: the candles. Hello, Patty, they said back in a chorus.
00:05:48
Speaker 1: Patty was very happy. Indeed, all her life she'd known
00:05:54
Speaker 1: that her true purpose was to adorn the center of
00:05:57
Speaker 1: the Thanksgiving table and bring joy to those around her
00:06:02
Speaker 1: on the holiday season, and now that moment was finally here.
00:06:08
Speaker 1: Shortly she'd be taken home by Martin and his mother,
00:06:11
Speaker 1: and her purpose would be fulfilled. She fizzed with excitement
00:06:17
Speaker 1: as she watched the yams get wrung through the till
00:06:21
Speaker 1: and placed into a big paper bag, and she fizzed
00:06:24
Speaker 1: even more as she watched the corn bread, the stuffing,
00:06:28
Speaker 1: and the candles go through too, placed in the bag
00:06:32
Speaker 1: beside the yams. Finally, it was her turn. The boy
00:06:38
Speaker 1: at the till picked her up, rang her through with
00:06:42
Speaker 1: the beep, and placed her beside the paper bag. Martin's
00:06:47
Speaker 1: mom got out her purse, paid, the boy at check out,
00:06:51
Speaker 1: lifted the paper bag into her arms, and left. Patty
00:06:57
Speaker 1: watched as she walked to towards the door, holding Martin's
00:07:02
Speaker 1: hand in hers wait Patty called, you've forgotten me. You're
00:07:10
Speaker 1: going to need your pumpkin pie. Wait up, but they
00:07:15
Speaker 1: couldn't hear her. They were already gone behind her. The
00:07:21
Speaker 1: boy at the checkout had close the till to go
00:07:23
Speaker 1: on his break, and it dawned on Patty that she
00:07:27
Speaker 1: might be stuck here at the checkout all day and
00:07:31
Speaker 1: never make it to the center of a table to
00:07:33
Speaker 1: spread holiday joy. Such a realization might have caused another
00:07:40
Speaker 1: pumpkin pie to worry, but not Patty. Patty was a
00:07:46
Speaker 1: brave and terribly positive pie, and she never let anything
00:07:51
Speaker 1: FaZe her. So it seemed that Martin and his mother
00:07:56
Speaker 1: had accidentally left her behind. They were sure to be
00:08:00
Speaker 1: disappointed when they got home and found that they didn't
00:08:04
Speaker 1: have a pumpkin pie. It may well ruin their day,
00:08:09
Speaker 1: and so she decided there was only one thing for it.
00:08:14
Speaker 1: She must find her own way to Martin's house, and
00:08:20
Speaker 1: in time for Thanksgiving too. Patty took a deep breath
00:08:27
Speaker 1: and with a bit of effort, pushed her arms through
00:08:30
Speaker 1: the side of the pastry and her legs through the
00:08:34
Speaker 1: bottom of the pastry. She gave her fingers and her
00:08:38
Speaker 1: toes a wiggle. That was better, she thought. Now she
00:08:42
Speaker 1: could get about by herself. Careful not to fall, she
00:08:47
Speaker 1: clambered down the side of the checkout. When she reached
00:08:51
Speaker 1: the floor, she looked from left to right to check
00:08:55
Speaker 1: the coast was clear before running over to the sliding doors.
00:09:01
Speaker 1: She didn't want to risk being seen. She didn't know
00:09:04
Speaker 1: what a human being would think if they saw a
00:09:07
Speaker 1: pumpkin pie skipping across the supermarket floor all by herself.
00:09:15
Speaker 1: She reached the doors and slipped outside, where there was
00:09:19
Speaker 1: a cool autumn breeze and cars drifted lazily by on
00:09:24
Speaker 1: the street. Up above her, the sky was a deep
00:09:29
Speaker 1: sapphire blue. There was breath taking to behold. She looked
00:09:35
Speaker 1: up and down the road and realized she didn't actually
00:09:39
Speaker 1: know where Martin and his mother lived. She wasn't sure
00:09:44
Speaker 1: which way to go. Well, then, she thought, the first
00:09:50
Speaker 1: thing she must do is find out where she was going.
00:09:55
Speaker 1: Patty the Pumpkin Pie walked up the street past the
00:09:59
Speaker 1: shop and a little cafe. Outside the cafe, seats were
00:10:05
Speaker 1: gathered around little round tables with parasols open on them.
00:10:10
Speaker 1: On top of one of the tables, she saw a
00:10:12
Speaker 1: mouse who was collecting sugar granules that had been spilt
00:10:16
Speaker 1: on the table. Hello, Patty called up, and the mouse
00:10:21
Speaker 1: turned around, gave a little twitch of her nose and
00:10:24
Speaker 1: called back down. Why Hello, Can I help you? Yes, please,
00:10:32
Speaker 1: Patty said, And straightway she explained the situation she found
00:10:36
Speaker 1: herself in. You see, she said, when she'd finished her tale,
00:10:42
Speaker 1: I need to find out where Martin lives. You wouldn't
00:10:47
Speaker 1: buy any chance happen to know? Would you. The mouse
00:10:51
Speaker 1: swung her tail back and forth in the air a
00:10:54
Speaker 1: few times in contemplation. Then she said, I'm afraid I
00:11:00
Speaker 1: don't know who Martin is and don't know where he lives.
00:11:06
Speaker 1: But she added, her eyes brightening up, I know someone
00:11:11
Speaker 1: who can help you, my pal, ruthless the hound. I
00:11:16
Speaker 1: bet he'll be able to lend you his nose. Shall
00:11:21
Speaker 1: I take you to him? Yes? Please, Patty said, her
00:11:26
Speaker 1: warm feeling of relief spreading through her. The mouse scurried
00:11:32
Speaker 1: down the table leg stood in front of her and said,
00:11:36
Speaker 1: follow me then, and together the two of them made
00:11:41
Speaker 1: their way down the road. Soon enough, they reached an
00:11:46
Speaker 1: alleyway and the mouse said, just down here. Patty followed
00:11:53
Speaker 1: her down the alley and at the end they came
00:11:56
Speaker 1: to a small garden square with bright green grass, tall trees,
00:12:02
Speaker 1: and lots of flower beds. He's just in here, the
00:12:07
Speaker 1: mouse assured her. Then she pointed across the park. There
00:12:12
Speaker 1: he is. She was pointing at a dog on the
00:12:15
Speaker 1: other side of the square who had his nose buried
00:12:18
Speaker 1: in a rose bush. Hey, rufus over here, the mouse called,
00:12:25
Speaker 1: and a big dog came bounding over from the other
00:12:28
Speaker 1: side of the park. Rufus had large feet and white
00:12:33
Speaker 1: fur with splotches of brown and black all over him.
00:12:37
Speaker 1: He had very long ears that almost reached down to
00:12:41
Speaker 1: his paws, and the skin on his face and body
00:12:45
Speaker 1: was loose and wrinkly. He had a big smile on
00:12:49
Speaker 1: his face and seemed like a very friendly dog. Indeed,
00:12:54
Speaker 1: when he said hello to Patty in the mouse, what
00:12:58
Speaker 1: can I do for you this holiday season, Rufus asked.
00:13:05
Speaker 1: The mouse explained to Rufus that she had met Patty
00:13:09
Speaker 1: on the street and that Patty needed to find Martin
00:13:13
Speaker 1: and his mother, who had put Patty into their shopping
00:13:16
Speaker 1: trolley but had forgotten to take her home at the checkout. Ah,
00:13:23
Speaker 1: Rufus sighed, full of understanding. Let me see what I
00:13:30
Speaker 1: can do, he thought for a second, gave his long
00:13:35
Speaker 1: ears a flap, and asked Patty whether Martin or his
00:13:40
Speaker 1: mother had picked her up with their bare hands when
00:13:43
Speaker 1: they took her off the shelf. Patty cast her memory
00:13:47
Speaker 1: back and told him that yes, they had. Well, that's brilliant,
00:13:56
Speaker 1: Rufus said. That means they'll have left their scent on you.
00:14:04
Speaker 1: Rufus has got the most sensitive sense of smell in
00:14:08
Speaker 1: the whole world. Said the mouse, full of pride at
00:14:12
Speaker 1: her friend's remarkable nose. Oh now, Rufus said, his modesty
00:14:19
Speaker 1: making him a little shy. Not in the whole world.
00:14:24
Speaker 1: May be in a town, but the mouse insisted his
00:14:30
Speaker 1: was their best nose in the whole world, and he'll
00:14:35
Speaker 1: be able to smell Martin and his mother on you
00:14:38
Speaker 1: and tell you where they are. Patty agreed that that
00:14:44
Speaker 1: truly was an amazing talent, So said Rufus, pointing a
00:14:51
Speaker 1: poor at his nose. May I, oh, please do, Patty Repliedrufus.
00:15:00
Speaker 1: The hound held his nose directly above her and took
00:15:04
Speaker 1: a deep breath in Ah, I smell pumpkin, he said.
00:15:15
Speaker 1: He took another deep breath, and cinnamon. Another breath, and
00:15:26
Speaker 1: that's nutmeg. Rufus took one more deep breath and then cried,
00:15:34
Speaker 1: with a look of happy satisfaction on his face. Got him,
00:15:39
Speaker 1: I can smell Martin and his mother, Rufus held up
00:15:45
Speaker 1: a paw, asking them to hold on a moment. He
00:15:50
Speaker 1: stuck his nose in the air, gave two great big sniffs,
00:15:55
Speaker 1: and then pointed across the park, and they live in
00:16:02
Speaker 1: that direction. I can smell them on the air. Patty
00:16:09
Speaker 1: was very impressed and told Rufus so, the mouse said,
00:16:15
Speaker 1: I told you he is the best. Now I know
00:16:19
Speaker 1: which direction Martin and his mother live in, said Patty,
00:16:23
Speaker 1: thinking out loud, I'd just have to find out how
00:16:27
Speaker 1: to get there. Well, said Rufus the hound, Why don't
00:16:34
Speaker 1: I take you. You can hop on my back and
00:16:38
Speaker 1: I'll follow the center cross town and take you to
00:16:43
Speaker 1: wherever they are. Patty was deeply moved by Rufus's generous offer.
00:16:50
Speaker 1: Oh really, she said, that's so kind. Would you be
00:16:55
Speaker 1: able to Oh for sure, Rufus, nodding. I like running
00:17:03
Speaker 1: across town almost as much as I love smelling things.
00:17:10
Speaker 1: Patty thanked the mouse for all her help, and the
00:17:13
Speaker 1: mouse told her that she hoped she found Martin and
00:17:16
Speaker 1: his mother in time. Rufus lay down on the floor
00:17:22
Speaker 1: so that Patty could climb more easily onto his back.
00:17:26
Speaker 1: Once she was there, he said, ready, She told him
00:17:32
Speaker 1: she was, and with that they were gone. It was
00:17:36
Speaker 1: exhilarating to ride on the back of a dog, but
00:17:41
Speaker 1: strangely calming at the same time. Rufus had a lulloping gait,
00:17:48
Speaker 1: and while it took a minute to get used to it,
00:17:51
Speaker 1: when she did Patty found its rocking motion peacefully hypnotic.
00:17:59
Speaker 1: Together they bounded through the town. They passed the tall
00:18:03
Speaker 1: municipal buildings, the bank, and the markets, and the arcade
00:18:08
Speaker 1: of shops. They passed the main street where the Thanksgiving
00:18:13
Speaker 1: parade was mustering colorful floats lined up one after the other.
00:18:19
Speaker 1: They passed Friend's hand in hand, men sat on stoops.
00:18:25
Speaker 1: A cat curled up on a warm metal dustbin. Lid
00:18:30
Speaker 1: this way, Rufus shouted, and then he bounded down a
00:18:35
Speaker 1: side street which was lined with brown stone houses. Through
00:18:41
Speaker 1: the windows, Patty spotted families setting their tables for Thanksgiving dinner,
00:18:47
Speaker 1: and she remembered her purpose and hoped that she'd make
00:18:51
Speaker 1: it to Martin's house in time. Soon they came to
00:18:56
Speaker 1: a smaller street lined with tall trees, the leaves rustling
00:19:02
Speaker 1: like whispering voices in the breeze. Rufus stopped in front
00:19:07
Speaker 1: of a small white house with a yard out the
00:19:10
Speaker 1: front with a swing set and a black and white football.
00:19:16
Speaker 1: Here we are, Rufus said, and Patty the pumpkin pie replied,
00:19:22
Speaker 1: is this it? Eyup, said Rufus, nodding his head so
00:19:28
Speaker 1: his big ears flapped about. I've followed the scent clear
00:19:33
Speaker 1: as day, and this is where it led me. Patty
00:19:39
Speaker 1: looked at the house, wondering whether this was where Martin
00:19:42
Speaker 1: and his mother lived. The swings and football could easily
00:19:47
Speaker 1: be his, but she needed a clearer sign. Just as
00:19:52
Speaker 1: she had thought, this past the open window in front
00:19:56
Speaker 1: of the house, past the figure of a woman. Patty
00:20:00
Speaker 1: recognized her immediately. It was Martin's mum. You're right, Rufus,
00:20:08
Speaker 1: Patty cried, happily, this is the right house. That's Martin's mum.
00:20:15
Speaker 1: Rufus bounced around and gave a bark of glee. Patty
00:20:21
Speaker 1: watched as Martin's mother carried a plate of food and
00:20:25
Speaker 1: placed it on a big wooden table, which was set
00:20:29
Speaker 1: for a whole family ready to eat on. Then she
00:20:33
Speaker 1: left the room. Thank you very much for bringing me here, Rufus,
00:20:40
Speaker 1: said Patty. Now we're here, I just need to find
00:20:45
Speaker 1: a way to get inside. I wonder if there's a
00:20:50
Speaker 1: key hidden around or a door cracked open somewhere. If
00:20:56
Speaker 1: that window was a little bit lower to the ground,
00:20:59
Speaker 1: HID be able to climb through that, But unfortunately it's
00:21:04
Speaker 1: too high up and I can't climb that far. Patty
00:21:10
Speaker 1: liked a voice, her thoughts out loud like this, and
00:21:14
Speaker 1: as she did, Rufus nodded in agreement with everything she said.
00:21:20
Speaker 1: He stuck his nose in the air and sniffed, but
00:21:25
Speaker 1: said that he couldn't smell a key anywhere nearby. Then
00:21:29
Speaker 1: his ears pricked up and he sniffed the air again
00:21:34
Speaker 1: and said, wait, what's done? Somebody's coming, And sure enough,
00:21:43
Speaker 1: around the corner of the house and into the yard
00:21:46
Speaker 1: strode a proud looking turkey with a dark gray fan
00:21:50
Speaker 1: of tail feathers and bright red neck. As she walked
00:21:55
Speaker 1: into the yard, she went gobble, gobble, gobble. When she
00:22:00
Speaker 1: saw Patty and Rufus waiting there, she stopped, turned her
00:22:05
Speaker 1: head to one side curiously and said, hullo. I wasn't
00:22:11
Speaker 1: expecting to see you there. Patty introduced herself and Rufus
00:22:18
Speaker 1: and explained what it was they were doing there. Do
00:22:23
Speaker 1: you live here, she asked the turkey. After she told
00:22:27
Speaker 1: her story, the turkey told them that yes, she lived
00:22:31
Speaker 1: on this road and liked to root through the grass
00:22:35
Speaker 1: in all of the front yards to find little scraps
00:22:37
Speaker 1: of food. Oh brilliant, said Patty. Maybe you can help
00:22:43
Speaker 1: me then, do you know if there's any way I
00:22:47
Speaker 1: can get into this house. I need to take my
00:22:51
Speaker 1: place on the table before Thanksgiving dinner starts. Is there
00:22:57
Speaker 1: a way in that, you know? The turkey looked up
00:23:01
Speaker 1: at the sky thoughtfully for a few moments, considering Patty's question.
00:23:07
Speaker 1: Then she said, unfortunately, there's no other door than the
00:23:13
Speaker 1: front one, which I can't open. But she added, if
00:23:19
Speaker 1: you've come this far riding on Rufus's back, perhaps you
00:23:23
Speaker 1: can climb on mine and I'll fly you up to
00:23:26
Speaker 1: the window. Patty the pumpkin Pie agreed that this was
00:23:31
Speaker 1: an excellent idea. She hopped off Rufus's back and gave
00:23:37
Speaker 1: him a big hug of thanks, and then climbed up
00:23:41
Speaker 1: onto the Turkey's back, whose feathers were not as soft
00:23:45
Speaker 1: as Rufus's fur but much sulkier. From through the window,
00:23:51
Speaker 1: they heard the sound of Martin's mother's voice. Martin, she called, Martin,
00:24:00
Speaker 1: did you get the pumpkin pie and place it in
00:24:02
Speaker 1: the middle of the table please. A few moments later
00:24:07
Speaker 1: came the sound of Martin's reply, from somewhere back in
00:24:11
Speaker 1: the house, I can't find it anywhere, he shouted, Well,
00:24:18
Speaker 1: I hope we haven't forgotten, it, muttered Martin's mother, passing
00:24:23
Speaker 1: by the window. That would be a real disappointment, and
00:24:29
Speaker 1: she left the room to investigate. Perfect timing, whispered Patty.
00:24:37
Speaker 1: Now's our chance. They're waiting for me all right, then,
00:24:42
Speaker 1: said the turkey. Hold on tight to my neck feathers.
00:24:46
Speaker 1: This might be a rocky ride. Patty did as the
00:24:52
Speaker 1: turkey recommended. She held on tight, and with a wild
00:24:57
Speaker 1: flap of her wings and a scrabble of her leg,
00:25:00
Speaker 1: the turkey took off into the air, wobbling this way
00:25:04
Speaker 1: and that, until finally she landed a little unsteadily on
00:25:09
Speaker 1: the windowsill. Off you hop, the turkey said, I can't
00:25:15
Speaker 1: balance here for too long. Patty said a quick thank
00:25:20
Speaker 1: you to the turkey, and slipped off her back. She
00:25:24
Speaker 1: climbed down the curtain, scuttled across the room, and climbed
00:25:30
Speaker 1: up the leg of the dining table. The table was
00:25:34
Speaker 1: beautifully decorated and set out with all kinds of wonderful dishes.
00:25:40
Speaker 1: She saw the yams and the corn bread, the stuffing,
00:25:44
Speaker 1: and the candles ready to be lit. Patty, they cried,
00:25:50
Speaker 1: you made it, I did, She said, I knew I would.
00:25:57
Speaker 1: In the middle of the table. Patty, he saw the
00:26:00
Speaker 1: empty pie stand, and she picked her way among her
00:26:04
Speaker 1: old friends and took up her place on it, just
00:26:08
Speaker 1: as Martin's mother was entering the room. Oh dear, she
00:26:14
Speaker 1: was saying, I guess we've left the pumpkin pie behind.
00:26:20
Speaker 1: But then she stopped what she was saying. She was
00:26:24
Speaker 1: looking at the table with an expression of surprise on
00:26:27
Speaker 1: her face, and then she broke out into a smile
00:26:33
Speaker 1: of great joy. Wow, she whispered, and then she called out, Martin,
00:26:42
Speaker 1: here it is. It's on the table. He must have
00:26:46
Speaker 1: been here all along. Martin ran into the room and
00:26:52
Speaker 1: wrapped his arms around his mother's legs. There it is,
00:26:57
Speaker 1: he said, And it's an evil, even better looking pie.
00:27:02
Speaker 1: Then I thought it was in the supermarket. It is,
00:27:07
Speaker 1: isn't it, said his mum, smiling down at him. I
00:27:13
Speaker 1: can't wait for the whole family to arrive, Martin said,
00:27:18
Speaker 1: He's going to be a great Thanksgiving. Martin and his
00:27:23
Speaker 1: mother left the room to wait for their whole family
00:27:27
Speaker 1: to arrive and start the celebrations. Patty took a deep
00:27:32
Speaker 1: breath in and let out a long sigh. She deserved it,
00:27:40
Speaker 1: what a trip she'd taken finding her way from the
00:27:44
Speaker 1: supermarket to this table, all by herself, or rather not
00:27:51
Speaker 1: quite by herself, with the help of her new friends,
00:27:55
Speaker 1: the mouse, Rufus, the hound, and the friendly turkey outside.
00:28:02
Speaker 1: She couldn't have done it without them, And so Patty
00:28:07
Speaker 1: the pumpkin Pie sat in the center of the table,
00:28:11
Speaker 1: feeling a great deal of happiness that she'd achieved her purpose.
00:28:18
Speaker 1: All of the family commented how wonderful the table looked,
00:28:23
Speaker 1: and how brilliant the pumpkin pie. This is the most
00:28:29
Speaker 1: wonderful Thanksgiving ever, they all agreed, and Patty couldn't help
00:28:36
Speaker 1: blushing just a little bit, with pride dusting
