Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Coco Sleep, a podcast of
00:00:15
Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime
00:00:20
Speaker 1: a dream ah the kindness of strangers. This story tonight
00:00:28
Speaker 1: is a real treasure because if you've seen the title,
00:00:32
Speaker 1: you'll think you'll know what it's about. But it's not
00:00:35
Speaker 1: the classic fairy tale you might have heard before. Instead,
00:00:40
Speaker 1: I'm happy to reveal that this version of the Three
00:00:43
Speaker 1: Little Pigs is a heartwarming tale full of surprising friendships,
00:00:49
Speaker 1: some of the most mouthwatering hospitality, and plenty of gentle kindness.
00:00:55
Speaker 1: Before we settle down to listen, just try closing your
00:00:59
Speaker 1: eyes gently and picture your home in fact. As you
00:01:06
Speaker 1: lie there, think about something in your home that you
00:01:10
Speaker 1: really love. It can be anything a person, a toy,
00:01:15
Speaker 1: a pet, a room, anything that brings warmth and happiness
00:01:21
Speaker 1: to you. When you settle your thoughts on it, Now
00:01:26
Speaker 1: take a deep breath in and let it out. Keep
00:01:33
Speaker 1: thinking about the things you love about your home and
00:01:37
Speaker 1: relax further. As I begin tonight's tale, which is really
00:01:43
Speaker 1: a big celebration of home and friendship. Now it's time
00:01:49
Speaker 1: to hear a tale about a wolf who is looking
00:01:53
Speaker 1: for somewhere new to live. As he wanders through a forest,
00:01:59
Speaker 1: he meets through kind hearted pigs who help him on
00:02:03
Speaker 1: his quest. This is The Three Little Pigs by Gillian Rogerson.
00:02:15
Speaker 1: Once upon a time in a forest, far far away,
00:02:20
Speaker 1: a mother pig was hanging out her washing on the line,
00:02:24
Speaker 1: when a breeze caught hold of a sock and pulled
00:02:28
Speaker 1: it free from her hand. The sock dipped and danced
00:02:33
Speaker 1: through the air and landed at the feet of a
00:02:36
Speaker 1: wolf who was passing by. Being of a kind nature,
00:02:42
Speaker 1: the wolf picked up the sock and returned it to
00:02:45
Speaker 1: the mother pig. She thanked him and said, isn't it
00:02:51
Speaker 1: a beautiful day? It certainly is, the wolf replied with
00:02:57
Speaker 1: a smile. The pig and the wolf fell into an
00:03:03
Speaker 1: easy chat and talked about this and that. After they
00:03:10
Speaker 1: had discussed many topics, the mother pig said, I haven't
00:03:15
Speaker 1: seen you around here before. Are you new to the area.
00:03:21
Speaker 1: The wolf nodded, I am. It's a beautiful forest. I'd
00:03:27
Speaker 1: very much like to live here. He looked towards her
00:03:31
Speaker 1: little house. I love your cottage. It looked cozy and warm.
00:03:39
Speaker 1: I normally sleep under the stars, but this time I
00:03:42
Speaker 1: had a home of my own. I'm not sure what
00:03:46
Speaker 1: kind of house would suit me, though. The mother pig
00:03:51
Speaker 1: told him he should visit her three children, as they
00:03:54
Speaker 1: had recently built their own homes. The youngest one lived
00:03:59
Speaker 1: a little way down the lane and had made her
00:04:02
Speaker 1: house out of straw. Feeling somewhat shy, the wolf said
00:04:08
Speaker 1: he didn't like to call on someone without an invitation.
00:04:12
Speaker 1: The mother pig had an idea. She went into her
00:04:16
Speaker 1: house and returned a moment later holding a dish containing
00:04:20
Speaker 1: a warm apple pie. She said, you can give this
00:04:26
Speaker 1: to my daughter. I was going to call on her
00:04:29
Speaker 1: later with this, but as you can see, I have
00:04:32
Speaker 1: a lot of washing to hang out. You'd be doing
00:04:36
Speaker 1: me a favor if you took this pie to her.
00:04:40
Speaker 1: The wolf said he would do that straight away, with
00:04:45
Speaker 1: the pie in his paws. The wolf said goodbye to
00:04:49
Speaker 1: the friendly pig and continued on his way. He soon
00:04:54
Speaker 1: came to a house made of golden yellow straw. He
00:04:58
Speaker 1: had a thatched roof was built in nests on the
00:05:01
Speaker 1: top of it. Tweeting birds rested snugly inside the nests.
00:05:08
Speaker 1: The straw walls were covered in brightly colored flowers. Buzzing
00:05:14
Speaker 1: bees flitted from blossom to blossom. A bench woven from
00:05:21
Speaker 1: straw stood at the side of the front door. Small
00:05:26
Speaker 1: bales of hay edged the garden like a golden wall.
00:05:30
Speaker 1: The front door was ajar, and a cheerful whistling came
00:05:34
Speaker 1: from within the house. The wolf opened a gate made
00:05:38
Speaker 1: from straw and walked along the path. He balanced the
00:05:44
Speaker 1: pie dish in one paw and raised his other to
00:05:47
Speaker 1: knock on the door. Softly, he called out, little pig,
00:05:54
Speaker 1: little pig, may I come in? The cheerful whistling continued.
00:06:01
Speaker 1: The wolf cleared his throat and said a little louder,
00:06:07
Speaker 1: little pig, little pig, may I come in. The whistling stopped,
00:06:15
Speaker 1: and the wolf heard footsteps coming closer. The door was
00:06:21
Speaker 1: opened fully, and a cheery faced pig stood there. She
00:06:26
Speaker 1: was wearing a yellow dress and had a small sunflower
00:06:30
Speaker 1: pinned behind one ear. She smiled at the wolf and said, hello, there,
00:06:37
Speaker 1: Can I help you with something. The wolf held out
00:06:42
Speaker 1: the pie and explained her mother had sent it. He
00:06:46
Speaker 1: also told the little pig about his plans to build
00:06:49
Speaker 1: a house of his own, but wasn't sure what kind
00:06:52
Speaker 1: he would like. He said her house was beautiful, and
00:06:57
Speaker 1: if she didn't mind, could he have a look around
00:06:59
Speaker 1: it please. Clapping her hands together in delight, the pig said,
00:07:08
Speaker 1: by the hair on my chiny chin chin, do come in.
00:07:14
Speaker 1: You can have a look around my house, and then
00:07:17
Speaker 1: we shall share this pie. The wolf entered the house
00:07:22
Speaker 1: and followed the pig around her home. It was bright
00:07:26
Speaker 1: and cozy. They went into the kitchen. The summer sun
00:07:32
Speaker 1: streamed through the open windows and danced across the yellow
00:07:37
Speaker 1: straw furniture, giving it a golden glow. The pig invited
00:07:42
Speaker 1: the wolf to take a seat while she prepared some
00:07:46
Speaker 1: tea to go with the pie. The wolf sat down
00:07:50
Speaker 1: and gazed around the kitchen. Scents of flowers drifted through
00:07:56
Speaker 1: the open windows. He heard the buzz of bee and
00:08:01
Speaker 1: the chirp of birds. A contented smile settled on his face.
00:08:09
Speaker 1: He felt like he was sitting outside on a beautiful
00:08:13
Speaker 1: summer's day. He imagined himself living in a house made
00:08:19
Speaker 1: of straw, and the long sunny days when he could
00:08:23
Speaker 1: listen to birds singing and insects humming. When the pig
00:08:29
Speaker 1: placed a cup of tea in front of him, the
00:08:33
Speaker 1: wolf said, you have a lovely house. I think I
00:08:38
Speaker 1: would like to build something like this. How long did
00:08:43
Speaker 1: you take to build it? No long at all. My
00:08:47
Speaker 1: family helped me. She cut into the warm apple pie
00:08:53
Speaker 1: and placed a slice on a plate for the wolf.
00:08:57
Speaker 1: As they ate, the wolf asked the pig more about
00:09:02
Speaker 1: her house. The little pig gave him lots of details
00:09:08
Speaker 1: and finished by saying she'd got her straw from a
00:09:11
Speaker 1: local farmer, and if the wolf wanted a home like hers,
00:09:16
Speaker 1: she would introduce him to the farmer, who would be
00:09:19
Speaker 1: sure to give him plenty of straw. They chatted some more,
00:09:25
Speaker 1: and after a while, the wolf said he must be going.
00:09:29
Speaker 1: He thanked the little pig for her time and said
00:09:32
Speaker 1: she had given him a lot of ideas about the
00:09:35
Speaker 1: kind of home he would like. The little pig said,
00:09:41
Speaker 1: before you make a decision, you should call on my
00:09:44
Speaker 1: brother down the lane. He made his house from sticks
00:09:48
Speaker 1: and wood. He'd be delighted to show you around it.
00:09:54
Speaker 1: Feeling bashful, the wolf said he didn't want to call
00:09:58
Speaker 1: on her brother. Unannounce the little pig stood up, reached
00:10:05
Speaker 1: into the cupboard, and took out a jar. She explained
00:10:11
Speaker 1: it was her homemade strawberry jam, and she'd been meaning
00:10:15
Speaker 1: to call on her brother to give it to him.
00:10:19
Speaker 1: The wolf would be doing her a big favor if
00:10:22
Speaker 1: he took the jam on her behalf. The wolf took
00:10:27
Speaker 1: the jar, thanked the little pig for her hospitality, and
00:10:32
Speaker 1: left the house. Made of golden straw, He carried on
00:10:37
Speaker 1: down the lane, the sun pleasantly warm on his back.
00:10:42
Speaker 1: He soon came across a house made out of wood
00:10:47
Speaker 1: and sticks. It had a roof made of dark chestnut
00:10:52
Speaker 1: colored shingles, which under the light of the summer sun,
00:10:57
Speaker 1: looked like chocolate. Wooden verandah wrapped around the small building,
00:11:04
Speaker 1: and a couple of carved benches made from entwined sticks
00:11:09
Speaker 1: stood on either side of the door. A low wooden
00:11:16
Speaker 1: picket fence perfectly framed the garden. The door was ajar,
00:11:23
Speaker 1: and the sound of joyful singing came from within the house.
00:11:29
Speaker 1: Holding the jam in one paw, the wolf opened the
00:11:34
Speaker 1: gate and stepped through it. He walked along the path
00:11:40
Speaker 1: and stopped at the door. He knocked on it and said, little, big,
00:11:46
Speaker 1: little big, may I come in. The singing stopped, and
00:11:53
Speaker 1: the wolf heard footsteps coming towards him. The door opened fully,
00:12:00
Speaker 1: and a pig wearing denim overalls stood there. A pencil
00:12:05
Speaker 1: stuck behind one ear. The pig broke into a wide
00:12:10
Speaker 1: smile and asked if he could help the wolf with something.
00:12:14
Speaker 1: The wolf held out the jar of strawberry jam and
00:12:18
Speaker 1: explained his sister had scent it. He also told the
00:12:23
Speaker 1: pig about his plans to build a house in the forest,
00:12:27
Speaker 1: and he very much liked the look of the pig's house,
00:12:32
Speaker 1: and if it was okay with him, could the wolf
00:12:35
Speaker 1: have a look around it please. The pig put his
00:12:39
Speaker 1: hands on his hips and let out a jolly laugh.
00:12:46
Speaker 2: By the hair on my chinny, chin chin, do come in.
00:12:52
Speaker 2: I will gladly show you around my house. What do
00:12:56
Speaker 2: you say to having some of that jam on freshly
00:12:59
Speaker 2: toasted bread? The wolf smiled and said strawberry jam was
00:13:04
Speaker 2: his very favorite and he would love some. He followed
00:13:09
Speaker 2: the pig around the beautiful house, and they soon ended
00:13:13
Speaker 2: up in the cheerful kitchen. Rays of sun streamed through
00:13:19
Speaker 2: the open shutters, causing the hand carved furniture to gleam
00:13:24
Speaker 2: and shine. The pig invited the wolf to take a
00:13:30
Speaker 2: seat while he toasted some bread. The wolf settled himself
00:13:35
Speaker 2: into a comfy rocking chair and rested his paws on
00:13:40
Speaker 2: his lap. He looked around the room, at the beautifully
00:13:44
Speaker 2: carved cabinets and the polished table. An open fireplace was
00:13:50
Speaker 2: framed by an elegant mahogany mantelpiece. Piles of logs lay
00:13:57
Speaker 2: on both sides of the fire, ready to be he lit.
00:14:00
Speaker 2: On cozy nights. A contented smile settled on the wolf's face.
00:14:08
Speaker 2: He pictured himself living in a house made of wood
00:14:14
Speaker 2: and imagined a winter's night, with the snow falling softly outside.
00:14:21
Speaker 2: He would sit next to the softly crackling fire and
00:14:25
Speaker 2: feel all snug and warm. The wolf felt his eyes
00:14:32
Speaker 2: growing pleasantly tired. He rocked gently.
00:14:37
Speaker 1: Back and forth in the chair. The pig placed a
00:14:42
Speaker 1: plate of warm toast in front of the wolf, along
00:14:46
Speaker 1: with a glass of sparkling lemonade. The wolf said thank
00:14:52
Speaker 1: you and took a big bite of the toast. The
00:14:57
Speaker 1: jam was sweet and luscious. When he'd finished the toast,
00:15:04
Speaker 1: the wolf asked the pig about his house and how
00:15:07
Speaker 1: long it had taken him to build it. Unw not long,
00:15:14
Speaker 1: the pig advised, my family helped me. Would you like
00:15:19
Speaker 1: some more toast? There's plenty. The wolf gladly accepted his offer,
00:15:26
Speaker 1: and the two soon fell into happy conversation about many things.
00:15:34
Speaker 1: Time flew by, and the wolf found himself greatly enjoying
00:15:39
Speaker 1: the pig's company. After a while, the wolf said he
00:15:45
Speaker 1: really must be going. He thanked the little pig for
00:15:48
Speaker 1: his time and said he'd given him a lot of
00:15:51
Speaker 1: ideas about the kind of home he would like. The
00:15:56
Speaker 1: pig said, before you make up your mind, you should
00:16:00
Speaker 1: call on my brother. He's made his house out of bricks.
00:16:06
Speaker 1: He lives a little way along the lane. Before the
00:16:11
Speaker 1: wolf could raise his concerns about turning up at his
00:16:15
Speaker 1: brother's house without an invite, the little pig asked him
00:16:20
Speaker 1: to take some carved wooden plates with him. I'll finish
00:16:24
Speaker 1: carving them this morning for my brother, and you'd be
00:16:28
Speaker 1: doing me a big favor by taking them to him.
00:16:33
Speaker 1: The wolf agreed to take the plates. He thanked the
00:16:37
Speaker 1: pig for his hospitality and went on his way. As
00:16:42
Speaker 1: he walked along, a warm breeze flowed around him, making
00:16:48
Speaker 1: his fur ruffle gently. Birds sang from the trees, and
00:16:54
Speaker 1: the air was scented with the soothing aroma of wild flowers.
00:17:01
Speaker 1: The wolf soon came upon a house made of red bricks.
00:17:07
Speaker 1: It had a roof made of blue tiles that had
00:17:10
Speaker 1: tiny glittering sparkles in them. A wishing well created from
00:17:17
Speaker 1: cream colored bricks stood in the middle of the lawn,
00:17:22
Speaker 1: and a low wall constructed from pale pink stones surrounded
00:17:27
Speaker 1: the garden. The front door was ajar, and the sound
00:17:32
Speaker 1: of someone playing the guitar came from within the house.
00:17:37
Speaker 1: The wolf opened the garden gate and walked through it.
00:17:43
Speaker 1: When he reached the door, he knocked on it and said,
00:17:47
Speaker 1: little pig, little big may I come in. The guitar
00:17:53
Speaker 1: playing stopped. The wolf heard footsteps coming towards him. The
00:18:00
Speaker 1: door opened and a pig wearing denim jeans and a
00:18:04
Speaker 1: T shirt stood there. He was holding a guitar. The
00:18:09
Speaker 1: pig smiled at the wolf and asked how he could help.
00:18:14
Speaker 1: The wolf held out the carved wooden plates and explained
00:18:18
Speaker 1: his brother had sent them. He also told the pig
00:18:22
Speaker 1: about his plans to build a house in the forest,
00:18:26
Speaker 1: and he very much liked the look of the pig's house,
00:18:30
Speaker 1: and if it was okay with him, could the wolf
00:18:33
Speaker 1: have a look around it please. The pig opened his
00:18:37
Speaker 1: door wider and said, buy the hair on my chinny chinchin,
00:18:43
Speaker 1: do come in I'll show you around my house and
00:18:47
Speaker 1: we can use those plates for a snack of cheese
00:18:50
Speaker 1: and crackers. The wolf followed him into the house. The
00:18:57
Speaker 1: pig took the wolf on a tour of his home
00:19:00
Speaker 1: and started with the chimney in the living room. He said,
00:19:06
Speaker 1: this was the first part that I built, and it's
00:19:09
Speaker 1: the strongest part of the house. When you start building yours,
00:19:13
Speaker 1: you should start with a sturdy chimney. No matter how
00:19:18
Speaker 1: much you might huff and puff, you had never blow
00:19:21
Speaker 1: this down. The pig showed him around the rest of
00:19:25
Speaker 1: the house and they ended up in the kitchen. When
00:19:30
Speaker 1: the wolf asked how long it had taken the pig
00:19:33
Speaker 1: to build his house of bricks, the pig replied, not
00:19:38
Speaker 1: long at all. My family helped me. The pig invited
00:19:43
Speaker 1: the wolf to sit in an armchair whilst he prepared
00:19:47
Speaker 1: a snack for them. The wolf settled down into the chair.
00:19:53
Speaker 1: It was soft and comfortable. He gazed out of the
00:19:57
Speaker 1: kitchen window and saw a small brick building in the garden.
00:20:02
Speaker 1: It looked like the ideal place to store garden furniture
00:20:06
Speaker 1: during the winter months. It would also be a wonderful
00:20:10
Speaker 1: area to keep toys and games for when guests came over,
00:20:16
Speaker 1: the pig returned to the wolf and handed him one
00:20:20
Speaker 1: of the carved plates. On the plate was a selection
00:20:25
Speaker 1: of crispy crackers, each one topped with a slice of
00:20:29
Speaker 1: golden cheese. The pig sat opposite the wolf with his
00:20:35
Speaker 1: own plate of savory treats. They ate in companionable silence
00:20:41
Speaker 1: and agreed the cheese was the tastiest one they had
00:20:45
Speaker 1: ever tasted. The wolf settled further back in the soft
00:20:50
Speaker 1: armchair and said, I heard you playing a guitar earlier.
00:20:56
Speaker 1: You're very good. Thank you. I can play you something
00:21:01
Speaker 1: if you like. The wolf said that would be lovely.
00:21:06
Speaker 1: The pig picked up his guitar and began to play
00:21:10
Speaker 1: a soothing tune, placing his hands on his full tummy.
00:21:17
Speaker 1: The wolf smiled and closed his eyes. Peace and contentment
00:21:23
Speaker 1: flowed through him. A lilting lullaby came from the guitar,
00:21:30
Speaker 1: causing the wolf to relax even more. The wolf became
00:21:36
Speaker 1: sleepier and sleepier. After a while, the guitar playing stopped.
00:21:46
Speaker 1: The wolf opened his eyes and sat up straighter. He
00:21:50
Speaker 1: apologized for falling asleep and said he wouldn't take up
00:21:55
Speaker 1: any more of the pig's time. The pig way his
00:22:00
Speaker 1: concerns away. You can stay as long as you like.
00:22:06
Speaker 1: Have you decided what your house is going to look like?
00:22:10
Speaker 1: The wolf considered the matter. I'm not sure. I like
00:22:16
Speaker 1: your sister's straw house and the one your brother made
00:22:20
Speaker 1: from wood and sticks, and I like yours too. There
00:22:25
Speaker 1: was a knock at the front door. The pig opened it.
00:22:29
Speaker 1: His brother and sister stood there. They asked if the
00:22:33
Speaker 1: wolf had been to visit him. The pig said yes,
00:22:37
Speaker 1: and he was still there. The three little pigs went
00:22:42
Speaker 1: into the kitchen and joined the wolf. He was still
00:22:47
Speaker 1: thinking about his house and what he would like it
00:22:50
Speaker 1: to look like. He said to the pigs, I would
00:22:56
Speaker 1: like a straw roof with nests built in it so
00:23:00
Speaker 1: that the birds could live there, and I would laugh.
00:23:05
Speaker 1: A wooden mantlepiece over a fire in the kitchen, and
00:23:10
Speaker 1: a wishing well in my garden would be great. He
00:23:15
Speaker 1: smiled at the pigs and added, I don't know how
00:23:19
Speaker 1: long it will take me to build it, but I'll
00:23:22
Speaker 1: get there eventually. The pigs smiled at the wolf and
00:23:29
Speaker 1: said they would help him build his house and it
00:23:32
Speaker 1: would be finished in no time at all. I can
00:23:37
Speaker 1: help you with de straw roof, said the first little pig.
00:23:42
Speaker 1: And I will carve a mahogany mantlepiece for you, said
00:23:47
Speaker 1: the second little pig. The third little pig said, I
00:23:54
Speaker 1: can help you with the wishing well, and I'll make
00:23:57
Speaker 1: you a strong chimney too. The wolf didn't know what
00:24:02
Speaker 1: to say. He was touched by their kindness and thanked
00:24:07
Speaker 1: them warmly. He looked towards the window and saw the
00:24:13
Speaker 1: first star twinkling into view in the dark sky. I
00:24:21
Speaker 1: think I'll spend one more night sleeping under the stars.
00:24:26
Speaker 1: It's a lovely evening and there's going to be a
00:24:29
Speaker 1: full moon. He saw the eager look on the pig's
00:24:33
Speaker 1: faces and said they were welcome to join him. The
00:24:39
Speaker 1: pigs thought it was a marvelous idea. The oldest pig
00:24:44
Speaker 1: collected his guitar and followed the wolf and his brother
00:24:48
Speaker 1: and sister out of the house and into the forest.
00:24:55
Speaker 1: The wolf found a peaceful spot beneath a large oak tree.
00:25:01
Speaker 1: The grass was soft and comfortable, it still held some
00:25:06
Speaker 1: of the day's heat. The wolf and the three pigs
00:25:11
Speaker 1: lay on the grass and looked up at the blanket
00:25:15
Speaker 1: of stars. The moon was full and bright. They began
00:25:22
Speaker 1: to discuss the wolf's house and how wonderful it would
00:25:26
Speaker 1: look when it was finished. The wolf said they would
00:25:31
Speaker 1: be welcome to call by any time. After thanking the
00:25:39
Speaker 1: three little pigs once again for their kindness, the wolf
00:25:44
Speaker 1: closed his eyes and thought about his wonderful day and
00:25:49
Speaker 1: his lovely new friends. He heard the gentle sound of
00:25:54
Speaker 1: the guitar being played. It was soft and melodic. He
00:26:01
Speaker 1: snuggled further into the warm grass and became more and
00:26:07
Speaker 1: more relaxed. With every breath he took, a gentle yawn
00:26:15
Speaker 1: escaped from him. His eyes grew heavier. Taking some deep breaths,
00:26:25
Speaker 1: the wolf fell sleepier and sleepier. Under the light of
00:26:32
Speaker 1: the moon, and with his new friends at his side,
00:26:37
Speaker 1: the wolf fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
