Speaker 1: a quiet night in by himself. But in Sleepy Forest,

Speaker 1: Every year, when the thirty first of October came around,

Speaker 1: the citizens of Sleepy Forest got very excited. Halloween was

Speaker 1: one of their favorite occasions, and everybody loved getting into

Speaker 1: the spooky spirit by decorating their porches, going pumpkin picking,

Speaker 1: and preparing their costumes for Halloween night. The little animals
00:02:25
Speaker 1: of Sleepy Forest adored trick or treating just as much
00:02:28
Speaker 1: as the adults did, and every household stocked up on
00:02:32
Speaker 1: sweets and treats to hand out when the children came knocking.
00:02:37
Speaker 1: That is, except for one animal. Mister Moose, wasn't particularly

Speaker 1: fond of Halloween. Mister Moose was a solitary creature who
00:02:47
Speaker 1: preferred his own peace and quiet and didn't see the
00:02:50
Speaker 1: fun in the traditions of Halloween. He didn't find much
00:02:54
Speaker 1: amusement in decorating his house in bunting, carving faces into pumpkins,

Speaker 1: and wearing silly costumes. No, every year, mister Moose would

Speaker 1: hide inside his house waiting for Halloween to pass by. However,

Speaker 1: this year, mister Moose's Halloween was to be like no

Speaker 1: other he had experienced before.

Speaker 2: Oooh, good morning, mister Moose.

Speaker 1: Tawny the owl hooted cheerfully as mister Moose opened his

Speaker 1: front door that morning. Good morning, Tawny. Mister Moose greeted

Speaker 1: his neighbor with a smile. Did you have a pleasant night?

Speaker 1: Tawny the owl rustled her wings and let out a

Speaker 1: yawn before replying, Oh.

Speaker 2: I did, thank you, although I do feel a little

Speaker 2: sleepy this morning. The children and I stayed up all

Speaker 2: night finishing off our costumes for this evening. Mister Moose

Speaker 2: raised an eyebrow with suspicion and ask what do you

Speaker 2: need costumes for? Are you going to a party? Towny

Speaker 2: the Owl chuckled and replied, Oh no, it's Halloween, silly.

Speaker 2: We are finishing off our costumes to go trick or

Speaker 2: treating in. Mister Moose sighed as he realized today was Halloween,

Speaker 2: his least favorite holiday of the year. He had hoped

Speaker 2: that Halloween would pass by quietly this year without him
00:04:45
Speaker 2: even noticing, but as he glanced up the sleepy forest street,
00:04:51
Speaker 2: he realized.

Speaker 1: It was not to be. Everywhere he looked there were

Speaker 1: decorations hanging from the trees, pumpkins on doorsteps, and chattering

Speaker 1: neighbors wandering around excitedly. Oblivious to his disappointment, Tawny the

Speaker 1: Owl called down to mister Moose from her treehouse. Do

Speaker 1: you have any special plans this evening? Mister Moose shook

Speaker 1: his large antlers firmly. Not particularly, he answered, I simply

Speaker 1: have plans to stay home, lights some candles, and read
00:05:35
Speaker 1: my book in peace. Tawny the Owl thought that sounded

Speaker 1: very nice, and she wished mister Moose a good evening
00:05:44
Speaker 1: before flying off into the forest to run some errands
00:05:48
Speaker 1: before the evening's celebrations began. Mister Moose looked down the
00:05:55
Speaker 1: street and groaned. It appeared the avoiding Halloween wasn't going
00:06:00
Speaker 1: to be an option today. He went to the corner
00:06:05
Speaker 1: shop to get his daily newspaper, and then to the
00:06:08
Speaker 1: bakery to buy a loaf of bread. Everywhere he turned
00:06:13
Speaker 1: there were Halloween decorations and posters. Even Betty Badger was
00:06:18
Speaker 1: wearing a costume for work at the bakery. She was
00:06:22
Speaker 1: dressed as a fairy and wore a pink tutu around
00:06:25
Speaker 1: her waist and a big pair of fake wings on
00:06:28
Speaker 1: her back as she served her customers. Mister Moose thought
00:06:32
Speaker 1: she looked a bit silly, but Betty Badger didn't appear
00:06:35
Speaker 1: to care. She seemed to be having a lot of fun.

Speaker 2: Actually.

Speaker 1: As Betty Badger handed mister Moose's freshly baked loaf of bread,

Speaker 1: she asked him, what are you going to dress up

Speaker 1: as tonight.

Speaker 1: Have you sorted out your costume yet? Mister Moose sniffed

Speaker 1: the delicious bread gratefully and responded, I will be getting

Speaker 1: dressed into my pajamas tonight and enjoying a delicious slice

Speaker 1: of toast from this loaf of bread. Betty Badger seemed confused.

Speaker 1: Did mister Moose not celebrate Halloween? When people asked him

Speaker 1: that mister Moose never knew what to say. He didn't

Speaker 1: want anyone to know that he wasn't particularly fond of Halloween,

Speaker 1: otherwise people might call him a grump instead. Mister Moose

Speaker 1: smiled and explained that he was simply feeling tired today

Speaker 1: and he didn't feel up to the celebrations this evening.

Speaker 1: Betty Badger smiled sympathetically and passed him a free cupcake.

Speaker 1: Maybe a bit of sugar will give you some more energy,

Speaker 1: she said kindly. I'll see if my children can pop

Speaker 1: by your house tonight for a spot of trick or treating.

Speaker 1: Maybe you'll feel better by then. Mister Moose thanked Betty

Speaker 1: As well meaning as she was, he hoped that they

Speaker 1: didn't come by his house tonight. All he wanted to

Speaker 1: do was enjoy a peaceful evening alone without the disturbance

Speaker 1: of trick or treateris. Mister Moose enjoyed the rest of

Speaker 1: his day avoiding the commotion of the Halloween lovers outside

Speaker 1: his home. He read his newspaper with a cup of

Speaker 1: tea and a sandwich. Then he went for his daily

Speaker 1: walk through the forest in the most beautiful secluded spots
00:08:50
Speaker 1: that hardly anybody knew about. Then, as the day came

Speaker 1: to an end, he walked home to settle in for
00:08:58
Speaker 1: a peaceful evening. He cooked himself a delicious dinner and

Speaker 1: then got changed into his pajamas to relax for the night.

Speaker 1: He lit candles all around his house and even kindled

Speaker 1: the fire in the fireplace. He wanted to feel as

Speaker 1: cozy as possible. He placed a fresh record on his

Speaker 1: record player and it began to gently play a delicate,

Speaker 1: slow tune that filled the room up with an idyllic,

Speaker 1: relaxing atmosphere. Finally, he settled himself into his favorite leather

Speaker 1: armchair and opened up his new book. He had just

Speaker 1: signed this book out of the library yesterday and it

Speaker 1: looked like a good one. He couldn't wait to get

Speaker 1: stuck in. With everything in its perfect place, mister Moose

Speaker 1: relaxed and began to read. It was set up to

Speaker 1: be the perfect evening. Mister Moose was half way through

Speaker 1: his first chapter when his peace was suddenly broken by

Speaker 1: a gentle knock at the front door. He paused and

Speaker 1: held his breath.

Speaker 2: Could it be?

Speaker 1: It wasn't long before his question was answered, as he

Speaker 1: heard a second knock on the door and a squeaky

Speaker 1: voice on the other side chiming, chick or cheek, mister Moose.

Speaker 1: Mister Moose slunk down into his arm chair and tried

Speaker 1: to hide out of sight of the window. His huge

Speaker 1: antners clunked against the sides of the chair, and he

Speaker 1: let out a little ouch as they did. He listened

Speaker 1: silently as the mystery trick or treator knocked one more

Speaker 1: time on his front door before giving up and moving

Speaker 1: on to the next house. Mister Moose let out a

Speaker 1: sigh of relief and muttered to himself, for you, that

Speaker 1: was close. I hope there's no others tonight. He sat

Speaker 1: back up in his chair, got comfortable once more, and

Speaker 1: continued to read his book. Mister Moose managed to read

Speaker 1: a few more pages in peace before his focus was

Speaker 1: disrupted yet again by another rap at the door.

Speaker 2: He jiggle, jeep, mister Moose.
00:11:40
Speaker 1: Two more voices giggled from outside. Mister Moose groaned with annoyance.

Speaker 1: All I want to do is read my book, he
00:11:52
Speaker 1: whispered to himself, Please go away and leave me in peace.

Speaker 1: He would never say this to any one out loud,
00:12:03
Speaker 1: of course, only to himself, so he simply hid himself

Speaker 1: away silently and waited for the children to move on.

Speaker 1: Mister Moose managed to read up to the end of

Speaker 1: chapter two of his book when he started to feel

Speaker 1: a little bit peckish. Now was the perfect time to

Speaker 1: make a slice of toast. He placed his bookmark between

Speaker 1: the pages to save his place, and then trotted into

Speaker 1: the kitchen to make his snack. Just as mister Moose

Speaker 1: was about to pop the bread in the toaster, he
00:12:41
Speaker 1: heard another knock at the door. Jake our trade, mister Moose.

Speaker 1: A gaggle of voices called out cheerfully. Mister Moose stamped
00:12:52
Speaker 1: his hooves with exasperation. Would he ever get any undisturbed
00:12:58
Speaker 1: peace this evening? As quietly as he could, mister Moose

Speaker 1: continued to make his slice of toast and hoped that
00:13:08
Speaker 1: the trickle treatis would be gone by the time he
00:13:11
Speaker 1: came back through to the living room. He slathered his

Speaker 1: toasted bread in blueberry jam and poured himself a glass

Speaker 1: of milk too. When he was done, he peered around

Speaker 1: the kitchen wall and into the living area to check

Speaker 1: if the coast was clear. To his inconvenience, he could

Speaker 1: see several little furry faces peeking through the front window

Speaker 1: with their sticky hands on the windowpane, searching for him.

Speaker 1: Thank goodness, he had moved into the kitchen for now,
00:13:46
Speaker 1: he thought to himself. He waited for the children to

Speaker 1: realize he wasn't there and give up before wandering back
00:13:55
Speaker 1: into the living room with his plate. He promptly walked
00:13:59
Speaker 1: over to the window and shut the curtains so that

Speaker 1: nobody could look inside again. It would seem that having

Speaker 1: a peaceful night in on Halloween was easier said than done.

Speaker 1: Mister Moose sat down and opened his book back up

Speaker 1: with relief. He gobbled up his crunchy slice of toast

Speaker 1: and slurped his cool glass of milk as he read,
00:14:27
Speaker 1: and for a while it seemed that Halloween had passed
00:14:31
Speaker 1: him by and he could at long last enjoy his
00:14:35
Speaker 1: peaceful evening. Time passed by, and mister Moose was finally
00:14:42
Speaker 1: so relaxed that he was starting to fall asleep in
00:14:46
Speaker 1: his armchair. His arms fell limp and his eyes drooped

Speaker 1: as his antlers leaned against the back of the chair.

Speaker 1: He was just on the edge of falling fire. He

Speaker 1: asked to sleep, when a knock at the door interrupted

Speaker 1: his calm. Mister Moose jumped up out of his chair

Speaker 1: with surprise and dropped the book to the floor, losing

Speaker 1: where he had got up to. Mister Moose had never

Speaker 1: liked to think of himself as a grouch, but right

Speaker 1: now he was feeling like one. He needed the knocking

Speaker 1: to stop. Grumpily, mister Moose stomped over to his front door,

Speaker 1: turned the key in the lock, and swung it open
00:15:36
Speaker 1: to face the annoying trickle treaters outside Trick or Treat

Speaker 1: mister Moose. A handful of little voices cried out happily.

Speaker 1: Mister Moose was prepared to tell them all to go away,

Speaker 1: but he stopped in his tracks when he saw who

Speaker 1: was outside his door. Lurie his gaze all the way

Speaker 1: down to the ground. Mister Moose's eyes fell on four

Speaker 1: tiny feathered owl chicks in the cutest pumpkin costumes he'd

Speaker 1: ever seen. The fore chicks looked up at him with large,

Speaker 1: glistening eyes and smiled the sweetest smiles with their tiny,

Speaker 1: teeny beaks, their many feathery wings poked out of little

Speaker 1: armholes in the sides of their costumes, and their short
00:16:34
Speaker 1: twiggy legs poked out of the bottom. Each owl chick

Speaker 1: had a different facial expression painted on the front of
00:16:44
Speaker 1: their pumpkin costume, and they all looked absolutely adorable. Mister

Speaker 1: Moose's heart melted instantly. Stood behind the fore chicks was

Speaker 1: his neighbor, Tawny in her own orange pumpkin costume to

Speaker 1: match her children. She grinned at mister Moose and asked,

Speaker 1: do you like our costumes? Mister Moose laughed and declared,

Speaker 1: I love them. You all look fantastic. The fore chicks

Speaker 1: looked up at him expectantly, and one boldly cried out, so,

Speaker 1: do you have any treats for us?

Speaker 1: Mister Moose paused with guilt. He didn't have any treats

Speaker 1: to give them. He never stocked up on goodies to

Speaker 1: give out at Halloween. What could he do? He didn't

Speaker 1: want Torny's hopeful little chicks to leave empty handed. He

Speaker 1: needed to buy himself some time. Mister Moose bashfully stepped

Speaker 1: back off his doorstep and replied, Oh, yes, of course

Speaker 1: your treats. I'll just go get them for you. Then

Speaker 1: he promptly scurried back inside his house and raced through
00:18:16
Speaker 1: to the kitchen. He looked around in a hurry. What

Speaker 1: could he give the chicks as a Halloween treat? He
00:18:26
Speaker 1: opened up all of his cupboards to see what was inside,
00:18:31
Speaker 1: but all he had were savory snacks, cans of soup,
00:18:35
Speaker 1: and vegetables. He couldn't get those as treats. He checked
00:18:41
Speaker 1: what he had on the kitchen counter, but all he
00:18:44
Speaker 1: had was the left over loaf of bread from Betty
00:18:47
Speaker 1: Badger's bakery and a jar of blueberry jam. For a moment,

Speaker 1: he contemplated slicing it up and giving the chicks a
00:18:56
Speaker 1: piece of bread and jam each, but that wouldn't do.

Speaker 1: As a last resort, he opened up the fridge in

Speaker 1: hopes that he would have something sweet in there. He

Speaker 1: glanced over the tubs of yogurt, the carton of milk,

Speaker 1: and a block of butter for inspiration, but mister Moose

Speaker 1: had never been much of a sweet ouse, and he
00:19:20
Speaker 1: hadn't bought anything treat like in a long time. Mister

Speaker 1: Moose was about to give up hope and prepared to
00:19:30
Speaker 1: disappoint the adorable chicks at his door when his eyes

Speaker 1: fell upon something he had completely forgotten about. On the

Speaker 1: top shelf of the fridge. Hidden behind the block of
00:19:43
Speaker 1: butter was the cupcake that Betty Badger had given him earlier.

Speaker 1: The cupcake was still fresh, and its swirly, creamy icing

Speaker 1: cooled out to him with a peal. Mister Moose grabbed

Speaker 1: the cupcake with relief and placed it on the kitchen countertop.

Speaker 1: He would need to make the cupcake stretch far. Luckily,

Speaker 1: the tiny owl chicks wouldn't need much to be satisfied.

Speaker 1: Using a butter knife, he chopped up the cupcake into

Speaker 1: little pieces, creating knots of mini cupcakes the perfect eyes

Speaker 1: for owl chicks. Then he placed four tiny pieces on

Speaker 1: a plate and headed back outside to serve them to

Speaker 1: his doorstep visitors. The four chicks delightedly took a tiny

Speaker 1: cupcake each and ate them straight away on the spot.

Speaker 1: Thank you, mister Moose, They all chirped together as they

Speaker 1: licked their lips. Mister Moose felt his heart melt. Maybe

Speaker 1: Halloween wasn't so bad after all. Seeing the happy faces

Speaker 1: on the young chicks, admiring how much effort had gone

Speaker 1: into making their costumes, mister Moose could see why other

Speaker 1: people liked Halloween so much. It was actually quite fun.

Speaker 1: Word got out fast that mister Moose was now accepting

Speaker 1: trickle treaters at his door. Those who had visited earlier

Speaker 1: came rushing back to see what mister Moose had to offer,

Speaker 1: and new visitors were excited to trickle treat at his

Speaker 1: house for the first time. Mister Moose felt a little

Speaker 1: guilty that he hadn't stocked up on treats to hand

Speaker 1: out ahead of time, but thanks to Betty Badger's cupcake,

Speaker 1: he at least had something to give out. Once the

Speaker 1: cupcake was all gone, he started giving out the only
00:21:52
Speaker 1: thing that he had left, slices of bread with blueberry jam.

Speaker 1: But none of the trickle trees Peter's minded what he

Speaker 1: gave them. All that they cared about was seeing mister

Speaker 1: Moose enjoying Halloween with them for the very first time.

Speaker 1: As time passed by and the night drew on, the
00:22:16
Speaker 1: young trickle treators of Sleepy Forest retreated to their beds,

Speaker 1: satisfied and tired from a fun filled Halloween night, and

Speaker 1: mister Moose could finally sit down and relax with his
00:22:32
Speaker 1: book once more. He slumped into his armchair with a
00:22:38
Speaker 1: smile on his face. He might not have had the long,

Speaker 1: peaceful night he had initially wanted, but it had turned

Speaker 1: into something even more special, and now he had the

Speaker 1: whole rest of the night to do what he had

Speaker 1: originally intended. Mister Moose gazed around his living room and

Speaker 1: noted how the candlewicks had melted even lower, and how

Speaker 1: the flames in the fireplace had dwindled, The record player

Speaker 1: had stopped playing music, and the room was silent and dim.

Speaker 1: It looked even cozier than it had done before. He

Speaker 1: rifled through the pages of his book to find where

Speaker 1: he had got to and began to read. However, the

Speaker 1: words on the page jumbled and blurred together. He couldn't

Speaker 1: read them properly. It was much too tired. Allowing his

Speaker 1: eyes to droop closed, mister Moose placed the book on
