Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Coco Sleep, a podcast of
00:00:14
Speaker 1: original children's bedtime stories and meditations designed to make bedtime
00:00:20
Speaker 1: a dream. Where's your favorite place to sing? In bed,
00:00:26
Speaker 1: in the kitchen, in the car? Hmm, Well, whilst you
00:00:31
Speaker 1: think about it, I am going to quickly give a big,
00:00:34
Speaker 1: warm welcome to our newest members of the Cocoa Club.
00:00:37
Speaker 1: Listen out for your name and no, we're giving you
00:00:39
Speaker 1: the biggest high fives and hugs of thanks for coming
00:00:42
Speaker 1: on board. Hi, Aria and Kira, Norris Elwin and Bishop Eleanor,
00:00:50
Speaker 1: Clara and Abby, Emlyn, R. J. Davis and Emma Davis,
00:00:56
Speaker 1: Liliana and Ailer. Welcome all of you and enjoy all
00:01:00
Speaker 1: the extra stories and adventures you've now got coming your way.
00:01:04
Speaker 1: So back to the singing question. Personally, I think I
00:01:09
Speaker 1: sound best in the shower, and maybe tonight's story will
00:01:12
Speaker 1: go some way to explaining why. For soon we're going
00:01:15
Speaker 1: to meet another creature who loves to sing. Not a
00:01:18
Speaker 1: human or a bird, but a mammal whose song is
00:01:22
Speaker 1: famous for being relaxing and soothing. Can you think which
00:01:27
Speaker 1: animal it might be? They usually live underwater, but tonight
00:01:32
Speaker 1: we're heading to meet our star in the hustle and
00:01:36
Speaker 1: bustle of New Orleans, a bustling town in swamps of Louisiana.
00:01:42
Speaker 1: We're soon going to meet a certain young whale who
00:01:44
Speaker 1: has a dream. He wants to sing jazz, and what
00:01:49
Speaker 1: better place to do it than in this magical musical metropolis.
00:01:54
Speaker 1: There's just one problem. It turns out his singing doesn't
00:01:58
Speaker 1: sound so great out of the water. I know the feeling. Well,
00:02:02
Speaker 1: let's hear about what happens when a band of cool
00:02:05
Speaker 1: cats take him under their wing. Lie back, relax and
00:02:11
Speaker 1: get comfy whilst I begin wailing. Duke and the Cool
00:02:16
Speaker 1: Cats by Susanna McLaughlin. There was once a whale born
00:02:29
Speaker 1: in the sea near Sleepy Forest. His mum named him Duke,
00:02:33
Speaker 1: after her favorite jazz pianist. It seemed that music flowed
00:02:37
Speaker 1: through his fins as Duke grew up to be a
00:02:40
Speaker 1: groover himself. Although he couldn't play a note at piano,
00:02:45
Speaker 1: he was known as whaling Duke on account of his singing.
00:02:50
Speaker 1: His wailing song echoed through the ocean, and he often
00:02:53
Speaker 1: found himself surrounded by castanett tapping crabs and drumming crawfish
00:02:59
Speaker 1: trumpet blown pufferfish and humming minnows. Juke had always dreamed
00:03:05
Speaker 1: of leaving the ocean to try his luck in the
00:03:07
Speaker 1: capital city of jazz, New Orleans, and everybody supported his dream,
00:03:14
Speaker 1: his mum especially. She had taught him everything he knew
00:03:18
Speaker 1: about jazz. In their favorite nook of the cove, you
00:03:22
Speaker 1: could find her record player and stacks of records so
00:03:26
Speaker 1: high they almost popped out above the waves. The two
00:03:30
Speaker 1: whales would relax on fluffy and enemies and sea sponge
00:03:34
Speaker 1: sofas and get lost in the plunk of the piano
00:03:37
Speaker 1: and the croons of the saxophone. She taught him about
00:03:42
Speaker 1: Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Felonious Monk.
00:03:47
Speaker 1: And she told him about New Orleans, a small town
00:03:51
Speaker 1: in the USA where ornate buildings grew from swamp lands
00:03:55
Speaker 1: and music filled the streets. She said that it had
00:03:59
Speaker 1: been home to the jazziest cats of all time. Duke
00:04:05
Speaker 1: was confused at first.
00:04:07
Speaker 2: It's a town of cats.
00:04:10
Speaker 1: He asked, No, silly, his mum replied, there's all sorts
00:04:16
Speaker 1: of animals there, but cats is what they sometimes call
00:04:19
Speaker 1: each other. You're a cool cat, too, Duke Duke laughed,
00:04:25
Speaker 1: looking at his fins and tail. He thought he was
00:04:29
Speaker 1: definitely a whale, but he guessed he could be a
00:04:32
Speaker 1: cool cat too. When the day came, Duke began his
00:04:37
Speaker 1: swim to the shore. He swam to the beach, stood
00:04:41
Speaker 1: up on his tail, and waded into the sand. He
00:04:45
Speaker 1: was a bit wobbly on his fins at first, but
00:04:48
Speaker 1: soon got used to being on land. He practiced a
00:04:51
Speaker 1: little boogie. Dancing may take a little more practice, he thought.
00:04:57
Speaker 1: Duke headed towards the faint sound of music which drifted
00:05:01
Speaker 1: from the town. He headed through narrow streets, and as
00:05:06
Speaker 1: the music got louder, more neon signs began to blink
00:05:10
Speaker 1: and glow over his head. Soon the streets were bustling
00:05:16
Speaker 1: between buildings with ornate iron railings and painted shutters under
00:05:21
Speaker 1: hanging flower baskets. People made music on every corner. The
00:05:28
Speaker 1: town had a constant soundtrack of crooners and musicians playing
00:05:33
Speaker 1: songs just like Duke heard on the records, and some
00:05:37
Speaker 1: that were unlike anything he'd ever heard at all. Duke
00:05:41
Speaker 1: headed to the guest house, where he was welcomed by
00:05:44
Speaker 1: a friendly gaiter named Agnes, who had a puffy bonnet
00:05:48
Speaker 1: on her head and Diamante's studded glasses on her snout.
00:05:53
Speaker 1: She breathed around in long cotton dresses and shawls, humming
00:05:58
Speaker 1: as she went. Agnes was quite the star back in
00:06:02
Speaker 1: her day, selling out every concert, having animals crowded into small,
00:06:08
Speaker 1: dark jazz venues just to hear her voice. Now, her
00:06:14
Speaker 1: voice was a little croaky, but she said she didn't mind.
00:06:18
Speaker 1: Now she much preferred to listen to music sipping an
00:06:23
Speaker 1: iced tea in a comfy chair near the waterside. But
00:06:27
Speaker 1: singer or not, her passion was as alive as ever,
00:06:32
Speaker 1: and the guest house was lined with stacks of records,
00:06:36
Speaker 1: who made Duke immediately feel at home. The other resident
00:06:43
Speaker 1: of the guest house was a bear named Gumbo, who
00:06:46
Speaker 1: had come to New Orleans from the mountains with dreams
00:06:49
Speaker 1: of being a chef. Having lived in the swamplands for years,
00:06:53
Speaker 1: having recipes passed down to him by his family, he
00:06:57
Speaker 1: claimed to have the best jumber in the whole of
00:07:01
Speaker 1: New Orleans, but the competition was tough. Gumbo and Duke
00:07:06
Speaker 1: became fast friends, both happy to have another by their
00:07:11
Speaker 1: side on the start of their journey to stardom. On
00:07:16
Speaker 1: Duke's first night in New Orleans. Gumbo fried up a
00:07:20
Speaker 1: whole plate each of Bennet sweet doughnuts covered in clouds
00:07:25
Speaker 1: of sugar. Duke thought they were one of the best
00:07:28
Speaker 1: things he had ever tasted. He turned to Gumbo and
00:07:32
Speaker 1: said that he was sure Gumbo would one day own
00:07:35
Speaker 1: the most famous restaurant in the city. Gumbo had shared
00:07:40
Speaker 1: his talent with Duke, and now he said he wanted
00:07:43
Speaker 1: to hear Duke's talent. In turn, Duke was happy to oblige.
00:07:49
Speaker 1: Having overheard, Agnes soon walshed in in a cloud of
00:07:53
Speaker 1: rosy perfume with a record in hand. It was her
00:07:57
Speaker 1: favorite jazz track, which she said wailing Duke would be
00:08:01
Speaker 1: a perfect addition to. She settled in a chair next
00:08:06
Speaker 1: to Gumbo and placed the needle onto the spinning record player.
00:08:11
Speaker 1: The sound of a saxophone reverberated through the room, and
00:08:16
Speaker 1: lively piano and deep double bass soon joined in. Then
00:08:23
Speaker 1: Duke began to wail, and all that came out was
00:08:29
Speaker 1: a slight honk. He tried again, nothing but a weak,
00:08:36
Speaker 1: wheezing honk. Well, dear, that's very unique, Agnes said. Duke
00:08:48
Speaker 1: hurried to tell her that he didn't usually sound like this.
00:08:51
Speaker 1: He chuckled, I've never sung above water before, he said.
00:08:57
Speaker 1: He took in another deep breath and let out a
00:09:00
Speaker 1: whale once more. All of the air just flowed weakly
00:09:06
Speaker 1: out of his blowhole. Maybe whiling Duke could only wail underwater,
00:09:14
Speaker 1: Duke shrugged. Maybe he was destined to be a star
00:09:19
Speaker 1: of the sea, not the land. That was okay with him.
00:09:24
Speaker 1: Agnes told him that she knew some people who might help.
00:09:28
Speaker 1: They knew music better than anyone in the business. She
00:09:32
Speaker 1: doodled a map on the back of a card which
00:09:35
Speaker 1: led a couple of streets over. Ask for the cool Cats,
00:09:40
Speaker 1: she said, Now they aren't actually cats, that's just their
00:09:45
Speaker 1: band name. Duke nodded wisely, anyone can be a cool
00:09:52
Speaker 1: cat in New Orleans, he said. Agnes smiled exactly, She said.
00:10:01
Speaker 1: Gumbo put on his fedora and said he would come
00:10:04
Speaker 1: along for the adventure. They were in this together, now
00:10:09
Speaker 1: the dreams coming true business. The whale and the bear
00:10:14
Speaker 1: headed out into the streets and were immediately washed in music.
00:10:20
Speaker 1: They applauded as they passed an octopus playing a drunket
00:10:24
Speaker 1: whilst blowing on a harmonica, and danced past a busy
00:10:28
Speaker 1: cafe packed with a brass band playing raucous swing music. Finally,
00:10:35
Speaker 1: they found themselves in front of a small venue with
00:10:38
Speaker 1: a wooden front. A neon sign in the shape of
00:10:42
Speaker 1: a saxophone swung above the door. Duke pushed open the
00:10:46
Speaker 1: door and led the way in. Immediately they were wrapped
00:10:52
Speaker 1: up in music, the rise and fall of the clarinet,
00:10:57
Speaker 1: the melody of the piano, and the whoops of the musicians.
00:11:03
Speaker 1: The music seemed to have no pattern or rules, with
00:11:07
Speaker 1: every instrument having turns as the star. At first, Gumbo
00:11:14
Speaker 1: and Duke were squinting in the darkness looking for its sauce,
00:11:18
Speaker 1: but suddenly spotlights turned on to light up the stage.
00:11:23
Speaker 1: Duke looked up at the rafters, where a bunny giggled
00:11:27
Speaker 1: and waved down at him from between the lights. Duke
00:11:32
Speaker 1: looked back to the stage to see the groovioust assortment
00:11:36
Speaker 1: of animals he'd ever seen. There was a warthog on
00:11:40
Speaker 1: the piano, tickling the notes from the bottom to the top.
00:11:45
Speaker 1: There was a tall tree frog with long legs swinging
00:11:49
Speaker 1: the double bass around on its stand. There was a
00:11:53
Speaker 1: goat on the clarinet, a pelican on the guitar, and
00:11:57
Speaker 1: one other that caught Duke's attention, and above all, the
00:12:01
Speaker 1: skunk on the saxophone. The skunk had a flash of
00:12:07
Speaker 1: white hair poofing from his head that bobbed and swung
00:12:11
Speaker 1: as he played, as if part of the music. His
00:12:14
Speaker 1: fluffy tails swirled this way and that as he swiftly
00:12:19
Speaker 1: moved his paws over the keys. His cheeks round as
00:12:23
Speaker 1: he played soaring melodies unlike anything Duke had heard before.
00:12:29
Speaker 1: His eyes were covered by his shades, and he wore
00:12:33
Speaker 1: a pin stripe blazer. He seemed lost in the music.
00:12:40
Speaker 1: Duke and Gumbo stood watching for a while, mouths open,
00:12:45
Speaker 1: until they were startled back into the room by the
00:12:49
Speaker 1: end of the song. After a moment of silence, the
00:12:55
Speaker 1: two animals began clapping their paws together enthusiastically. The skunk
00:13:01
Speaker 1: lowered his shades and looked towards them. Hey, there, he said,
00:13:08
Speaker 1: I'm swinging stew and these are the cool cats. What
00:13:14
Speaker 1: brings you two to our audience to day? Duke felt
00:13:19
Speaker 1: a little nervous to be talking to a real jazz
00:13:22
Speaker 1: musician from New Orleans, but he swallowed, stood up on
00:13:27
Speaker 1: his tail, and replied, Hi, I'm Duke, and this is Gumbo.
00:13:34
Speaker 1: Agnes sent us. You guys are really something that was amazing.
00:13:42
Speaker 1: I have a musical problem, you see, I'm a singer
00:13:46
Speaker 1: who's lost his voice. Agnes thought you might be able
00:13:50
Speaker 1: to help. Gumbo nodded encouragingly. From his side. A singer
00:13:58
Speaker 1: without a voice, Stu said, well, they just won't do.
00:14:06
Speaker 1: Come up here, Duke and show us what you've got.
00:14:10
Speaker 1: Duke headed up the aisle towards the steps that led
00:14:13
Speaker 1: to the stage. All of the cool cats were smiling
00:14:17
Speaker 1: at him encouragingly. Stu said they would play their instruments
00:14:23
Speaker 1: and all Duke had to do was sing along. He
00:14:27
Speaker 1: counted down three, two, one, and they began to play.
00:14:34
Speaker 1: Duke closed his eyes, felt the music filled him up,
00:14:39
Speaker 1: and took in a big lungful of air. Then he
00:14:43
Speaker 1: let out his first note, if you could call it
00:14:47
Speaker 1: a note anyway. The air just blew out of his blowhole,
00:14:51
Speaker 1: making hardly any noise at all. Duke sighed and smiled
00:14:57
Speaker 1: at stew I came all the from the coast of
00:15:01
Speaker 1: Sleepy Forest to sing, and I've lost my voice. Stu
00:15:07
Speaker 1: took off his shades and looked at Duke. Sleepy Forest,
00:15:12
Speaker 1: you say, he asked, I played a concert there. What
00:15:18
Speaker 1: a truly magical place. You're from the ocean, right, Stu asked.
00:15:27
Speaker 1: Duke nodded. Is this the first time you sung above water?
00:15:34
Speaker 1: Duke scratched his chin with his fin. He supposed it was.
00:15:40
Speaker 1: Everything is a little different underwater, Stu said, but let's
00:15:47
Speaker 1: try to find a solution, and hey, if it makes
00:15:51
Speaker 1: you feel better. None of us cool cats are very
00:15:53
Speaker 1: good singers either. The pelican called.
00:15:57
Speaker 2: Out, huh, specially me, and I have the biggest mouth
00:16:03
Speaker 2: of all of us. His bill opened wide as he laughed.
00:16:09
Speaker 2: Duke grinned, let's drag him. Stu instructed, after our count
00:16:17
Speaker 2: to three, you sing a one, two, three, Duke led
00:16:24
Speaker 2: out a whale even feebler than the last. Stu scratched
00:16:30
Speaker 2: his little Goatye, it seems all of the air is
00:16:36
Speaker 2: escaping from your blowhole, he said. I'll bet that doesn't
00:16:41
Speaker 2: happen when you're underwater. Duke shook his head. We'll just
00:16:48
Speaker 2: have to plug it up.
00:16:50
Speaker 1: The frog cried, rustling about in his bag, and I
00:16:54
Speaker 1: have just the thing. In his outstretched hand. He offer
00:17:00
Speaker 1: for Duke a pink, fluffy marshmallow. Duke popped it in
00:17:05
Speaker 1: his blowhole, and Stuke counted him in once more, one, two, three,
00:17:13
Speaker 1: Duke wailed, and something slightly more whale light came out.
00:17:19
Speaker 1: It was still weak and much less lively than Duke
00:17:23
Speaker 1: was usually capable of, but it was better than before.
00:17:28
Speaker 1: Gumbo and the band whooped and hollowed. Good job, Duke,
00:17:34
Speaker 1: the clarinet playing Goat said, patting him on the back.
00:17:38
Speaker 1: They were making progress. Now, I'm awfully sorry, Duke, but
00:17:45
Speaker 1: we have to go prepare for our concert, and the
00:17:48
Speaker 1: curtains are about to come up. But you practice and
00:17:53
Speaker 1: come back tomorrow, you'll be singing before you know it.
00:17:58
Speaker 1: Gumbo and Duke thanked the corcats, who told them to
00:18:01
Speaker 1: send their love to Agnes before heading back to their home.
00:18:06
Speaker 1: Duke was practically dancing through the streets. He was going
00:18:10
Speaker 1: to get his voice back, and he knew the best
00:18:13
Speaker 1: jazz band in the whole of New Orleans. Now that
00:18:18
Speaker 1: was something to celebrate. Gumbo cooked up some red beans
00:18:24
Speaker 1: and rice, a New Orleans delicacy, and the two of
00:18:27
Speaker 1: them ate, then danced around the guesthouse. Soon Duke was exhausted.
00:18:34
Speaker 1: He thought he might want an early night. First thing, first,
00:18:40
Speaker 1: Duke brushed his teeth, Then he hopped into the bath.
00:18:45
Speaker 1: He lathered up some soap into bubbly foam and covered
00:18:49
Speaker 1: his face with it. As he was scrubbing, he let
00:18:53
Speaker 1: the col cat's music drift back into his head. He
00:18:59
Speaker 1: began to his head, then hum, then sing in his new, weak,
00:19:08
Speaker 1: squeaky way. He dunked his head into the water to
00:19:12
Speaker 1: wash off the soap. Immediately his voice sang out with
00:19:18
Speaker 1: all of its former power. He sat up startled. Duke
00:19:23
Speaker 1: heard Gumbo knock on the bathroom door. Was it you, Duke?
00:19:31
Speaker 1: Did you sing? He asked. Duke puffed up his chest
00:19:36
Speaker 1: with happiness. His voice wasn't lost at all. He had sung.
00:19:42
Speaker 1: All he needed was the water, just like at home.
00:19:47
Speaker 1: He ducked his head back under and sang once more.
00:19:52
Speaker 1: His smooth, jazzy voice was back. Gumbo cheered from outside
00:19:59
Speaker 1: of the door. Duke wrapped himself in a fluffy towel,
00:20:03
Speaker 1: then put on his dressing gown. He had a plan,
00:20:07
Speaker 1: and he would need Gumbo's help. He explained his plan
00:20:11
Speaker 1: to the friendly bear and they soon started brainstorming. Duke
00:20:17
Speaker 1: needed some kind of contraction that would keep him under
00:20:20
Speaker 1: water on land, and preferably one he could dance in too.
00:20:27
Speaker 1: Before long, Gumbo was sketching on a rolled out strip
00:20:31
Speaker 1: of baking paper. His design was genius. It was like
00:20:36
Speaker 1: a space helmet, but it would be filled with water.
00:20:41
Speaker 1: Duke would wear it on his head and alongside his
00:20:44
Speaker 1: marshmallow blow hole blocker, he would be able to sing
00:20:48
Speaker 1: his heart out as if he was at the bottom
00:20:52
Speaker 1: of the ocean. Now for the hard part. They had
00:20:57
Speaker 1: to make it. They tried several things with no success. First,
00:21:03
Speaker 1: two mixing bowls taped together. This was water tight, but
00:21:07
Speaker 1: Duke wouldn't be able to see through it to know
00:21:10
Speaker 1: where he was going. Next, an upside down vase. This
00:21:15
Speaker 1: was transparent, but when they flipped it over, the water
00:21:19
Speaker 1: fell out and drenched Duke and the carpet. Luckily, Agnes
00:21:25
Speaker 1: didn't mind their mischief. It was Agnes who came up
00:21:29
Speaker 1: with the final contraption. When she came in and saw
00:21:33
Speaker 1: the soggy carpet and Duke dancing around with the vase
00:21:37
Speaker 1: on his head, she thought she would have to step in.
00:21:41
Speaker 1: Here need a fish bowl, Sillies, she croaked. Luckily, she
00:21:47
Speaker 1: had the perfect one. It was a huge fish bowl,
00:21:51
Speaker 1: perfectly round and perfectly clear. Agnes explained that it used
00:21:57
Speaker 1: to belong to her friend Angie the Angelfish, before she
00:22:01
Speaker 1: moved out to go on a tropical vacation. She showed
00:22:06
Speaker 1: them a few photos of Angie floating in a bay
00:22:09
Speaker 1: in Bora Bora. Anyway, the bowl was fish free and
00:22:14
Speaker 1: waiting for someone to find a use for it. Duke
00:22:19
Speaker 1: tried the bowl on. It was perfect. Agnes put on
00:22:25
Speaker 1: her favorite record and told Duke to sing. Duke was
00:22:31
Speaker 1: wailing Duke once more. His singing was even louder and
00:22:37
Speaker 1: more resonant than ever. It filled the room and Agnes
00:22:42
Speaker 1: watched on in amazement. Take it from me, Duke, she said,
00:22:49
Speaker 1: when he finished, You're a star. Duke hugged Agnes and
00:22:56
Speaker 1: Gumbo in glee. The next day he would be able
00:23:01
Speaker 1: to show the cool Cats what he was made of.
00:23:05
Speaker 1: The next afternoon, Duke and Gumbo headed back to the
00:23:09
Speaker 1: music Hall fishbowl in tow The Cool Cats were chatting
00:23:14
Speaker 1: and tuning their instruments. As they entered, they all called
00:23:18
Speaker 1: out a friendly hello to the two animals. Stu welcomed them,
00:23:23
Speaker 1: and Gumbo settled in a plush chair as Duke went
00:23:27
Speaker 1: up on stage. Stu watched on, bemused as Duke took
00:23:33
Speaker 1: the fish bowl from his bag and put it on
00:23:36
Speaker 1: his head, filled with water. The Cool Cats picked up
00:23:41
Speaker 1: their instruments and Stu counted down at three, two one.
00:23:49
Speaker 1: The double bass boined into life, and the clarinet began
00:23:53
Speaker 1: to sing. The piano plinked and plunked, and the saxophone
00:23:59
Speaker 1: started to walk, and soon Duke began to wail. It
00:24:06
Speaker 1: was the most ethereal moving sound. Yet also it was
00:24:12
Speaker 1: cool and fresh. He turned the Cool Cat's music into
00:24:17
Speaker 1: a symphony. Gumbo's eyes were glittering in the front row.
00:24:24
Speaker 1: His friend was a star. When the song came to
00:24:30
Speaker 1: the end, Stu patted Duke on the back. You are
00:24:35
Speaker 1: indeed a cool cat, he said. Stu asked Duke to
00:24:42
Speaker 1: step off the stage for a moment whilst he talked
00:24:45
Speaker 1: to the band. Duke sat down next to Gumbo, who
00:24:50
Speaker 1: squeezed him in a hark and told him he was
00:24:53
Speaker 1: so very proud of him. Soon the band turned back
00:24:59
Speaker 1: to the duo, Duke, would you like to be one
00:25:04
Speaker 1: of the cool cats, stew asked. Duke couldn't believe it.
00:25:10
Speaker 1: His tommy did somersaults, as did the butterflies that suddenly
00:25:14
Speaker 1: lived there. He smiled politely and said simply yes please,
00:25:22
Speaker 1: and that is the story of how whale Song came
00:25:26
Speaker 1: to be known by the world. Wailing Duke joined the
00:25:31
Speaker 1: Cool Cats and toured the world with them, spreading their
00:25:35
Speaker 1: music far and wide. Most of the time they were
00:25:40
Speaker 1: in New Orleans playing at their new favorite spot, Gumbos,
00:25:45
Speaker 1: a new restaurant run by a very talented bear, but
00:25:50
Speaker 1: often they found themselves back at Duke's home on the
00:25:55
Speaker 1: beach by Sleepy Forest. Unfortunately, on night, Duke the rest
00:26:01
Speaker 1: of the band didn't sound better underwater, so they had
00:26:06
Speaker 1: to play on the sand, but Duke's family and friends
00:26:10
Speaker 1: would poke their head above the water and listen to
00:26:15
Speaker 1: the smooth sound of his voice until the sun went down.
